Follicle-stimulating hormone (_NIH-FSH-S8) was labelled with ¹²⁵I to determine its disappearance rate after a single intravenous injection and to determine the level of circulating [¹²⁵I]fsh in the blood after a single intramuscular or subcutaneous injection in the rat, rabbit, ewe and cow. There was a difference in the disappearance and uptake rates among the four species, but the shape of the curve for rate of loss and uptake of labelled fsh was similar in all species. This thesis will be a study in microcosm of Melvin R. Gilmore’s Nebraska research. The study analyzes his ethnobiological field work and writings in terms of biographic factors.Gilmore’s ethnobiological research manifests both bioecological and cultural ecological rationales. The thesis shows that Gilmore’s pioneering work in ethnobiology, together with studies by Harrington and others, laid the groundwork for modern cultural ecology as practiced by Julian Steward and others. The author of the thesis used original documents from the Nebraska State Historical Society in his research.

The delta-ray theory of the inactivation of cells by energetic heavy ions describes cellular survival after heavy ion bombardment through a two-component survival model, in which 4 operational parameters (E₀,m₀, σ₀, and κ) describe the response of a particular cellular variety in a particular ambient condition, for an arbitrary radiation environment. The quantities m and E₀ are the extrapolation number and extrapolated D-37 dose of the survival curve after gamma-ray irradiation. Some Adult Digenetic Trematodes In Striped Mullet From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Robin M. Overstreet

Morphological information is given on the adults of four trematodes from Mugil cephalus from estuarine waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico with complementary information from specimens from Georgia. Lasiotocus glebulentus sp. n., from the Gulf, possesses a submedian genital pore and apparently differs from all known species by containing several large concretions in the excretory vesicle. Data are presented for Hymenocotta manteri Overstreet, 1969, Saccocoelioides beauforti (Hunter and Thomas, 1961) comb. n., and Dicrogaster fastigatus Thatcher and Sparks, 1958. During investigations of experimental leishmaniasis in American lizards, insect flagellates of at least two genera were isolated from freshly deposited fecal material and gut contents of two genera of Central American lizards (Basilicus and Ameiva).

It appears to us that some of the conclusions regarding the biology of certain flagellates described as reptilian leishmanias must be accepted with caution. Insect flagellates do persist in the lizard intestine for several days, and it is entirely possibly that some reptilian "leishmanias," particularly those described with gut involvement, such as Leishmania henrici, may actually be insect flagellates.

Notes On The Biology Of The Central American Squirrel, Sciurus Richmondi, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Additional specimens of Sciurus richmondi are reported, along with comments on variation, distribution, reproduction and molt in this little known squirrel. As presently understood, S. richmondi occurs only in the Caribbean rain forests of Nicaragua. Significant secondary sexual variation in adults was found only in zygomatic breadth, in which females are the larger. Available evidence reveals that the breeding season extends at least from February to September, and suggests two seasonal molts annually.

Both nongeographic and geographic variation was assessed in southern banner-tailed kangaroo rats of the nominal species Dipodomys phillipsii and D. ornatus . Univariate and multivariate analyses were employed in consideration of geographic variation. D. ornatus is arranged as a subspecies of D. phillipsii, in which four races (phillipsii, ornatus, perotensis, and oaxacae) are recognized. Some observations on natural history also are included.

A systematic revision is presented for the genus Brephosceles. Data on external morphology, zoogeography, and host-parasite relationships are included. Thirteen named and thirty new species are recognized and described. Dairy cattle type appraisal data were examined to determine whether body and udder conformation and management ratings were affected by age and period of lactation at appraisal. Data were collected from 1961 to 1968 from 188 herds having over 23,000 Holstein type appraisals. The body and udder traits were scored by scheduled appraisers, and the management traits were coded by each dairyman. Some of the 35 original traits were composed of more than one descriptive characteristic and, as a result, 49 renamed traits were derived from these.

Radiation detection and damage data from several physical, chemical, and biological systems have been analyzed by a unified track theory, in which observed effects are attributed to the interaction of secondary electrons with the medium. Gamma-ray dose-response curves are combined with calculations of the spatial dose distribution about an ion's path to yield dose-response curves (survival curves) for heavy ion bombardment, through appropriately defined parameters. Perplexing phenomena associated with high LET radiation are sorted out according to track regime (grain-count or track-width), inactivation mode (gamma-kill or ion-kill), structural complexity (elementary, cellular, multicellular), and end-point. The generic rev1s1on of the Pterodectinae, new subfamily of the Proctophyllodidae, is based on 88 named and over 160 new species. Included are morphology, host-parasite relationships, diagnoses of four named and eight new genera, and illustrations of each type species. The named genera are:

Karyotypes are defined for two nearctic species of marmots, Marmota olympus (2n = 40) and M. vancouverensis (2n = 42), and supplemental information is included on the karyotypes of M. flaviventris, M. monax ochracea, and M. marmota. The six North American species of Marmota (NF = 66) comprise a distinct group as compared with the middle Asian species (NF = 70) for which the karyotypes are known. Karyologic findings and zoogeographic evidence based upon the distribution of two nearctic species of host-specific cestodes indicate that M. broweri, in northern Alaska, is a pre-Würm relict. For more than 100 years, the red fruit-eating bat, Stenoderma rufum Desmarest, 1820, was known only by a specimen of unknown geographic provenience. Anthony ( 1918, 1925) rediscovered Stenoderma in Puerto Rican cave deposits, but the first living specimens to be reported since the original description were taken on St. John in the Virgin Islands (Hall and Bee, 1960). Subsequently, Tamsitt and Valdivieso (1966) recorded living representatives from Puerto Rico-from a population later named and described as a distinctive subspecies, Stenoderma rufum darioi, by Hall and Tamsitt (1968). The primary productivity of a small gravel pit lake in the Platte River Valley of Nebraska was studied for a 2-year period. Daily production rates were estimated from near weekly samples, with calculations done by computer. Emphasis was placed on production under ice during winter conditions. Annual production was estimated and is compared with several other lakes in North America.
