Simulation Studies Of Corn Hybrid-Climate Response In Nebraska, R. E. Neild, N. H. Richman Aug 1979

Simulation Studies Of Corn Hybrid-Climate Response In Nebraska, R. E. Neild, N. H. Richman

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Crop development models can be used to determine the expected phenological responses of corn hybrids to different planting dates and locations. The number of days from planting to maturity for a particular hybrid varies considerably between different dates of planting at a single location and between locations at the same planting date.

Agar Plate Culture Of Selected Trypanosomatidae, Amy Doran Keppel Aug 1979

Agar Plate Culture Of Selected Trypanosomatidae, Amy Doran Keppel

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Summary

The study of trypanosomatid biology would benefit greatly from the acquisition of a tool for culturing such as those used in microbiology. Agar plate culture has been described several times, but until the present its potential for use in this area has been underestimated. The previous work has demonstrated that this culture method may be used to culture a wide variety of species, that these species give rise to identifiable colony phenotypes, and that these are stable regardless of the life cycle stage used to initiate the culture. It was also shown that colonies could be initiated from the …

The cattle Germ Plasm Evaluation Program has been conducted in three cycles. Cycle I involved breeding Hereford, Angus, Jersey, South Devon, Limousin, Simmental and Charolais bulls by artificial insemination (AI) to Hereford and Angus cows to produce three calf crops (Cycle I, Phase 2) in the spring of 1970, 1971 and 1972.

Cycle II, initiated with the 1972 breeding season, involved the Hereford and Angus cows used in the first cycle. These cows were bred by AI to Hereford, Angus, Red Poll, Brown Swiss, Gelbvieh, Maine Anjou and Chianina sires to produce two calf crops (Cycle II, Phase 2) in …

Use Of Small Groups In Instructional Evaluation, D. Joseph Clark, Jean Bekey Jul 1979

Use Of Small Groups In Instructional Evaluation, D. Joseph Clark, Jean Bekey

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

The Biology Learning Resource Center (BLRC) at the University of Washington has been supporting faculty in instructional improvement for the past five years. In the summer of 1977 consultants from the BLRC began a structured system of intervention following the clinic model developed at the University of Massachusetts by Melnik and Allen (Bergquist and Phillips, 1977). An essential feature of the Clinic model is feedback from students, as well as from the consultant. Consultants observe typical classroom sessions, videotape instruction, administer questionnaires to students and conduct student interviews to develop a profile of teaching, including strengths and weaknesses. Information derived …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Nebraska Lakes, F. A. Morris, M. K. Morris, W. D. Taylor, L. R. Williams, S. C. Hern, V. W. Lambou

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Protection of the environment requires effective regulatory actions which are based on ssound technical and scientific information. This information must include the quantitative description and linking of pollutant sources, transport mechanisms, interactions, and resulting effects on man and his environment. Because of the complexities involved, assessment of specific pollutants in the environment requires a total systems approach which transcends the media of air, water, and land. The Environmental Monitoring and Support Laboratory-Las Vegas contributes to the formation and enhancement of a sound monitoring data base for exposure assessment through programs designed to:

  • develop and optimize systems and strategies for monitoring …

Maintaining A Septic Tank System, Elbert C. Dickey, Gary Hosek, Phillip W. Harlan Jun 1979

Maintaining A Septic Tank System, Elbert C. Dickey, Gary Hosek, Phillip W. Harlan

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Once a septic tank and absorption field are installed, you can do several things to prolong their life, thus protecting an investment which may cost $2500 or more. Here are several tips you can follow.

Often overlooked or neglected is the fact that septic tanks should be inspected at least once annually. In every properly functioning septic tank, sludge accumulates in the bottom. This sludge is composed of solid materials and must be removed periodically. If the sludge is not removed, the accumulated solids will build up in the septic tank and will begin to wash out into the absorption …

A Septic Tank System For Sewage Treatment, Elbert C. Dickey, Phillip W. Harlan, Gary Hosek

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A properly designed, installed ao1d maintained septic tank system is an approved method of sewage treatment for private residences in rural or urban areas where public sewage treatment systems are not available. The components of a septic system are the house sewer, the septic tank and the absorption field, as illustrated in Figure 1. Sewage flows to the septic tank through the house sewer. In the septic tank, the solids are separated from the liquids, undergo anaerobic digestion and are stored as sludge at the bottom of the tank. The liquid (septic tank effluent) flows to the absorption field …

Distribution Of Plants With Extrafloral Nectaries And Ants At Two Elevations In Jamaica, Kathleen H. Keeler Jun 1979

Distribution Of Plants With Extrafloral Nectaries And Ants At Two Elevations In Jamaica, Kathleen H. Keeler

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Frequencies of plants with extrafloral nectaries were determined for two elevations in Jamaica. Extrafloral nectaries were found on 0.28 of the plants at sea level (Happy Grove, Portland) and 0.00 of the plants at 1310 m (Whitfield Hall, St. Thomas). Ant abundance, as indicated by discovery of and recruitment to baits, was greater at the lower elevation site. However, despite the apparent absence of plants with extrafloral nectaries, there were abundant ants at 1310 m.

Search Image Formation In The Blue Jay (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alexandra T. Pietrewicz, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Blue jays trained to detect Catocala moths in slides were exposed to two types of slide series containing these moths: series of one species and series of two species intermixed. In one species series, detection ability increased with successive encounters with one prey type. No similar effect occurred in two species series. These results are a direct demonstration of a specific search image.

Bacteriological Quality Of Runoff Water From Pastureland, John W. Doran, D.M. Linn May 1979

Bacteriological Quality Of Runoff Water From Pastureland, John W. Doran, D.M. Linn

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Runoff from a cow-calf pasture in eastern Nebraska was monitored for total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms (FC), and fecal streptococci (FS) during 1976, 1977, and 1978. Bacteriological counts in runoff from both grazed and ungrazed areas generally exceeded recommended water quality standards. The FC group was the best indicator group of the impact of grazing. Rainfall runoff from the grazed area contained 5 to 10 times more FC than runoff from the fenced, ungrazed area. There was little difference in TC counts between the two areas, but FS counts were higher in runoff from the ungrazed area and reflected the …

Attitudes Of A Selected Sample Of Middle-Aged Women Toward Aging, Helen Jane Speece May 1979

Attitudes Of A Selected Sample Of Middle-Aged Women Toward Aging, Helen Jane Speece

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The primary objective of the study was to survey attitudes of middle-aged women toward aging. The secondary objective was to give direction in planning educational programs for this age group. The problem was to determine the relationship among attitudes toward aging and attitudes toward self, satisfaction in resolving developmental tasks, and contact with older people and planning for old age. An analysis was also made of the relationship of attitudes toward aging and perceived financial security and perceived health in old age. This study was an exploratory, descriptive survey utilizing a proportionate random sample of 241 Extension Club members in …

Selection For Yellow Clover Aphid And Pea Aphid Resistance In Red Clover, H. J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz, Francis A. Haskins Apr 1979

Selection For Yellow Clover Aphid And Pea Aphid Resistance In Red Clover, H. J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Most red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) cultivars are susceptible to attack by the yellow clover aphid (Therioaphis trifolii Monell) and the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris). Starting with 27 yellow clover aphid-resistant plants selected from a wide diversity of germplasm, phenotypic recurrent selection was used to improve resistance to the two aphids. Through five cycles of testing and selection for yellow clover aphid resistance and three such cycles for pea aphid resistance, a synthetic, 'N-2', was developed that had a high level of resistance to both aphids.

A Study Of Nongeographic Variation In Tatera Leucogaster (Mammalia: Rodentia) From Botswana, Pierre Swanepoel, Duane A. Schlitter, Hugh H. Genoways Mar 1979

A Study Of Nongeographic Variation In Tatera Leucogaster (Mammalia: Rodentia) From Botswana, Pierre Swanepoel, Duane A. Schlitter, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Specimens of Tatera leucogaster from six localities in Botswana were tested for variation with age, secondary sexual variation, and individual variation. Of the six age classes recognized, categories I, II, and III each formed their own group, whereas cat egories IV, V, and VI were not separable on a morphometric basis and were considered to be adults. Significant secondary sexual variation was found only in depth of braincase in which females were larger. The only character exhibiting unusually high individual variation was length of posterior palatal foramen. All other characters exhibited individual variation within acceptable limits.

A Systematic Review Of The Olive-Backed Pocket Mouse, Perognathus Fasciatus (Rodentia, Heteromyidae), Daniel F. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Geographic variation in Perognathus fasciatus Wied and the identities of specimens of P. fasciatus and P. flavescens from areas of potential sympatry were investigated. Populations of P. fasciatus from the northern Great Plains, in areas with the highest amounts of precipitation, were the darkest colored and had proportionately the smallest auditory bullae. Size varied clinally in the Great Plains, with larger mice being found in the cooler, northern latitudes. Populations from the arid intermountain basins of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming were largest in size, had the longest tails, were the palest in color, and had the largest bullae. Two races …

Species With Extrafloral Nectaries In A Temperate Flora (Nebraska), Kathleen H. Keeler Mar 1979

Species With Extrafloral Nectaries In A Temperate Flora (Nebraska), Kathleen H. Keeler

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) are glands on a plant, not involved in pollination, that produce solutions containing sugars (and other compounds). Long noted by morphologists, EFNs have recently been observed to be part of ant-plant mutualisms. The function of EFNs appears to be to attract aggressive insects, especially ants, which by disturbing or preying upon herbivores, reduce damage to the plant (Janzen, 1966a,b; Elias and Gelband, 1975; Keeler, 1975, 1977; Bentley, 1976, 1977a,b; Schemske, 1978; Tilman, 1978; Inouye and Taylor, 1979; Pickett ad Clark, 1979). Furthermore, they constitute an unusual plant defense against herbivores: at EFNs plants employ ants as a …

The Breeding Birds Of Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard Mar 1979

The Breeding Birds Of Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

This brief annotated list of Nebraska's breeding birds is the direct outgrowth of the work involved in the preparation of a forthcoming book titled "The Birds of the Great Plains," which will include range maps for all species except extinct or extirpated ones, and will also provide information on breeding habitat, nest location, clutch size, incubation period, and breeding biology. The purpose of the present compilation is to provide a convenient summary for Nebraska alone, amplifying some of the more general statements of that book, and pointing out uncertain or interesting situations needing further attention from field ornithologists. It includes …
