Tillage Systems For Row Crop Production, Elbert C. Dickey, Allen Rider, Phillip W. Harlan
Tillage Systems For Row Crop Production, Elbert C. Dickey, Allen Rider, Phillip W. Harlan
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Selecting a tillage system that is best suited to a particular farming situation is an important management decision. In the past, a crop producer's primary concerns were field capacity and the costs of owning and operating equipment. However, with rapidly increasing energy costs, alternative tillage systems are being carefully evaluated and selected by more producers.
Previously, the most common tillage system included a moldboard plow to turn residue under either in the fall or spring. Following plowing, spring tillage normally included one or more shallow diskings to kill weeds, incorporate fertilizer and pesticides, and provide loose soil for seed. Other …

A New Species Of Rhynchomys (Muridae) From The Philippines, Guy G. Musser, Patricia W. Freeman
A New Species Of Rhynchomys (Muridae) From The Philippines, Guy G. Musser, Patricia W. Freeman
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
". . . Mr. Whitehead has made a most wonderful and unexpected discovery, that of a new and peculiar Mammal-fauna inhabiting the Luzon highlands, and, so far as is yet known, mostly isolated on a small plateau on the top of Monte Data, in the centre of Northern Luzon, at an altitude of from 7000 to 8000 feet." With this dramatic announcement, Oldfield Thomas (1898:377) introduced to naturalists the spectacular rats found by Whitehead: Crateromys schadenbergi, Carpomys melanurus, C. phaeurus, Batomys granti, Chrotomys whiteheadi, Celaenomys silaceus, and Rhynchomys soricoides. One of the most interesting of these to Thomas was …
Correspondence Of Food Habits And Morphology In Insectivorous Bats, Patricia W. Freeman
Correspondence Of Food Habits And Morphology In Insectivorous Bats, Patricia W. Freeman
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
In a morphometric study of molossid bats (Freeman, in press), I found that the first principal component (PC) reflected overall size. The second PC was concerned with a suite of jaw and skull measurements that separated molossids with thicker jaws, fewer but larger teeth, and welldeveloped cranial crests (i.e., bats with robust skulls) from those with thinner jaws, more but smaller teeth, and less developed cranial crests. Subsequently, I found (Freeman, 1979) that molossids with robust skulls ate hard-shelled insects such as beetles. and that molossids with gracile skulls ate soft-bodied insects such as moths. Given these conclusions I was …

Trematode-Gastropod Associations In Nine Non-Lacustrine Habitats In The Mwanza Region Of Tanzania, Sam Loker, H. G. Moyo, Scott Lyell Gardner
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Between August 1978 and July 1979, freshwater gastropods were collected at monthly intervals from 9 different non-lacustrine habitats in the Mwanza region of Tanzania. Of a total of 11 708 gastropods representing 14 species, 1748 (14.9 %) were infected with trematode sporocysts and/or rediae. Altogether 38 morphologically distinguishable ‘species’ of cercariae were recovered (13 furcocercous, 10 xiphidiocercaria, 6 echinostome, 4 cystophorous, 3 gymnocephalous and 2 amphistome species), 22 of which did not conform to previously described African species. The majority (63.8%) of all mature infections were xiphidiocercariae. Biomphalaria pfeifferi, B. sudanica and Ceratophallus natalensis each yielded 11 species of …
Function Of Mentzelia Nuda (Loasaceae) Postfloral Nectaries In Seed Defense, Kathleen H. Keeler
Function Of Mentzelia Nuda (Loasaceae) Postfloral Nectaries In Seed Defense, Kathleen H. Keeler
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Mentzelia nuda is a coarse, short-lived perennial of the High Plains of North America. The flowers secrete nectar which serves as an attractant for pollinating bees. Postfloral nectar secretion attracts ants whose presence significantly enhances seed set. This is the first demonstration of advantage to postflowering activity of a floral nectary.

Relationship Between Production And Stayability In Holstein Cattle, G. F. S. Hudson, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Records from 97,555 first daughters of 1,487 Holstein sires in artificial insemination were used to estimate components of variance and covariance of first lactation milk and fat production and stayability to 36, 48, 60, 72, and 84 mo of age. Henderson's Method 3 was used with a model including fixed herd-year- season and genetic group effects and random sire within group and residual effects. Heritabilities for milk and fat production and 36-, 48-, 60-, 72-, and 84-mo stayability were .31, .30, .02, .04, .05, .05, and .05. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between milk production and stayability ranged from .47 to …

Observations On Bats From Trinidad, With A Checklist Of Species Occurring On The Island, Catherine H. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert S. Loregnard, Robert J. Baker
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
In their comprehensive treatment of the bats of Trinidad, Goodwin and Greenhall (1961) reported 58 species from the island. Subsequent authors (Goodwin and Greenhall, 1962, 1964; Genoways et al., 1973a; LaVal, 1973a, 1973b) have added some species to the list and changed the status of others so that the known chiropteran fauna of Trinidad now comprises 64 species: five emballonurids, one noctilionid, four mormoopids, 36 phyllostomids (see Handley, 1980, for family-group names), one natalid, one furipterid, one thyropterid, seven vespertilionids, and eight molossids. Among the phyllostomids, the subfamilies Phyllostominae (15) and Stenodermatinae (14) are the best represented, whereas only a …

Determination Of Age And Whelping Dates Of Live Red Fox Pups, Alan B. Sargeant, Stephen H. Allen, Douglas H. Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Public concern for large carnivores, high longhair fur prices, and recent findings of predator-prey investigations have increased interest in the management of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). A technique for assigning individuals to age-classes is necessary to understand the population dynamics and behavioral interactions of this species.
The Role Of Nutrient Reserves In Mallard Reproduction, Gary Krapu
The Role Of Nutrient Reserves In Mallard Reproduction, Gary Krapu
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Mallard (Arias platyrhynchos) populations breeding in temperate North America obtain a significant part of the energy and lipid requirements of reproduction at sites occupied prior to arrival on the breeding grounds. Protein for egg formation, however, is obtained principally from the diet during the nesting period. Both sexes arrive heavy and fat in North Dakota but experience substantial weight loss and lipid depletion during the nesting cycle. Weight loss is most pronounced among females and averages 25% from prelaying to late incubation. Body weights of both sexes are positively correlated with carcass lipid content. The paired male draws …

Influence Of Phosphate Source On Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Of Bouteloua Gracilis, Michael F. Allen, James C. Sexton, Thomas S. Moore Jr., Martha Christensen
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Non-mycorrhizal and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis infected with Glomus fasciculatus were grown in defined media containing different phosphate sources and compared with respect to phosphate content and form, biomass, chlorophyll concentration, and root phosphatase activity. The phosphate sources were sodium monobasic phosphate, a mixture of sodium monobasic phosphate and calcium phytate, and calcium phytate. Inositol and inositol plus calcium were added to the sodium phosphate medium as additional treatments. Mycorrhizal infection was highest in roots of plants grown in the presence of phytate (75%). Lower root infection levels were noted in plants from the sodium phosphate (19%) and mixed phosphate …

Aquatic Habitat Inventory Of The Missouri River From Gavins Point Dam To Ponca State Park, Nebraska, James C. Schmulbach, Jeffrey J. Schuckman, Eric A. Nelson
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
One of the few reaches of the Missouri River which remains in a relatively natural free-flowing state is a 93 km segment extending from Gavins Point Dam to Ponca State Park, NB. This reach of the river was designated as a National Recreational River (P.L.95-625, Sect. 707, 1978) because the natural and cultural values of this section were considered worthy of preservation. Early in 1979, the Secretary of the Interior designated the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service (HCRS) as the agency responsible for developing a management plan for the Missouri Recreation River. The HCRS teamed with the U.S. Army Corps …

Missouri National Recreational River: Native American Cultural Resources, John Ludwickson, Donald Blakeslee, John O'Shea
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
An inventory of known and identifiable cultural resources referrable to Native American populations was undertaken for a corridor along the new Missouri National Recreational River, roughly from Gavin's Foint Dam to Ponca, Nebraska. These resources included archaeological sites and collections, ethnographic and ethnohistorical data and relevant environmental background information. Using these data the Native American occupation of the Missouri National Recreational River area was synthesized into a regional overview which stresses culture-historical developments and changing adaptations to the natural environment. Problems for continuing research utilizing existing archaeological collections were developed, and recommendations for continued field work to fill in gaps …

The White Perch, Marone Americana (Gmelin) In Nebraska, Gene Zuerlein
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
The white perch, Morone americana (Gmelinl, is a member of the Percichthyidae family. It is a euryhaline species that is common along the northern Atlantic coast south to the Carolinas. Marine, estuarine and freshwater ecosystems with salinities ranging from 5 to 18 percent have been known to support white perch (Mansueti 1964). The species is semianadromous, making spawning runs up coastal streams. It commonly becomes completely landlocked in ponds and reservoirs of its native range where it spawns successfully. This species has been known as a game fish to generations of New England fishermen, but when stocked in landlocked waters …

Predators that forage for aggregated prey appear to require a decision rule for determining the point at which to discontinue their search in a given prey patch and move on to another. Although the optimum rule depends heavily on features of the searching behavior of the predator and the distribution of the prey (Oaten 1977), most previous authors have assumed that the decision must involve an assessment of the capture rate within a patch and a comparison with the mean capture rate in the environment as a whole (Krebs 1978). When the perceived quality of the given patch becomes significantly …

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

First paragraph:
Toward A History Of Plains Archeology, Waldo R. Wedel
Toward A History Of Plains Archeology, Waldo R. Wedel
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
First viewed by white men in 1541, the North American Great Plains remained little known and largely misunderstood for nearly three centuries. The newcomers from Europe were impressed by the seemingly endless grasslands, the countless wild cattle, and the picturesque tent-dwelling native people who followed the herds, subsisting on the bison and dragging their possessions about on dogs. Neither these Indians nor the grasslands nor their fauna had any counterparts in the previous experience of the Spaniards. Later Euro-American expeditions, whether seeking gold, converts, or furs, added many details of much interest, but likewise found no wealth of minerals, too …

Bone Strength As A Trait For Assesing Mineralization In Swine: A Critical Review Of Techniques Involved, T. D. Crenshaw, E. R. Peo, Jr., A. J. Lewis, B. D. Moser
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Lack of standardized test procedures has resulted in considerable variation in reported values for bone strength. Such variation can be attributed in part to the type of instruments used to determine physical properties of bone, procedures used to prepare the bones for testing and equations used to calculate strength. If bone strength is to be used as a major criterion of response in mineral nutrition research, standardization of procedures for measuring and reporting bone strength is essential. Traits that describe the mechanical properties of bone as determined in the commonly used flexure test in which force is applied perpendicularly to …

Effects Of Reduced Tillage And Multiple Cropping On Plant Diseases, Donald R. Sumner, Ben Doupnik Jr., M. G. Boosalis
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
In the past, tillage research on plant diseases was concerned primarily with practices that buried plant residues in single-crop production systems. The burial of plant debris to destroy pathogens is an ancient agricultural prac tice (34). Each crop was tested as a single entity, and most crop rotations were based on one crop per year. Interest in notill and conservation tillage systems and mUltiple cropping has increased in the past two decades be cause of the scarcity and increased cost of fossil fuels, periodic world food shortages, and the concern over soil erosion (73,110). These concerns are of such paramount …
