Growth Analysis Based On Degree Days, M. P. Russelle, Wallace Wilhelm, R. A. Olson, James F. Power
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Comparisons of growth analysis functions within and among experiments are often confounded by sources of variation other than those imposed by treatment. we suggest use of a temperature index, such as modified growing degree days, as the divisor in growth functions to facilitate treatment comparisons within certain experiments and to reduce the effects of differing temperature regimes among experiments on these comparisons. Three experiments were identified to provide data to analyze this new approach. Mean absolute growth rate (GR) and mean relative growth rate (RGR) were compared in two experiments with maize (Zea mays L.) conducted in eastern Nebraska. …

The hypothesis that luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in prepubertal females is responsive to estradiol negative feedback and that decreased feedback occurs as puberty approaches was tested in heifers. In the first experiment, seven heifers were maintained prepubertal by dietary energy restriction until 508 days of age (Day 0). All heifers were placed on a high-energy diet on Day 0 at which time they received no additional treatment (CONT), were ovariectomized (OVX) or were ovariectomized and subcutaneously implanted with estradiol-17β (OVX-E2). This feeding regimen was used to synchronize reproductive state in all heifers. A second experiment was performed with …

I.V. Withdrawal: The Severance Of Medicine's Or Society's Umbilical Cord? Barber V. Superior Court Of Los Angeles County, 137 Cal. App. 3d 1006, 195 Cal. Rptr. 484 (1983), J. P. Chrisman
Nebraska Law Review
This article addresses the propriety of the Barber v. Superior Court of Los Angeles County decision and its ramifications. The purposes of the article are twofold. First, I argue in Part II that, contrary to the Barber court's reasoning, intravenous feeding and hydration are not treatments but rather sustenance; therefore, they cannot be discontinued simply because a patient is incurably comatose. The second, and major, purpose (in Part III) is to recommend methods for dealing with the problems inherently associated with the care of incurably comatose patients.

The objectives of this study were to monitor postmortem changes in the eyes of selected species, as well as other physical changes. In order to obtain a more suitable manuscript, people from other states were contacted . Their data, along with some published data, was included in this manuscript . We were, therefore, able to cover post-mortem changes in several species. For deer, data was collected on temperature, electrical stimulus, rigor mortis, pupil diameter, pictorial changes, and chemical changes in the potassium and glucose levels within the eye . Waterfowl data included temperatures, rigor mortis, physical changes in the eye, …
Enteric Redmouth Disease Of Salmonids, G. L. Bullock
Enteric Redmouth Disease Of Salmonids, G. L. Bullock
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Enteric redmouth disease (ERM) is a systemic bacterial infection of fishes, but is principally known for its occurrence in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. The disease was first reported in the 1950's by Rucker (1966), and in recognition of that fact, the causal organism was named Yersinia ruckeri by Ewing et al. (1978). Although Wagner and Perkins (1952) described a bacterial disease that produced a red-mouth condition in rainbow trout in California and Colorado, it was caused by a different bacterium; they isolated Pseudomonas hydrophila rather than Y. ruckeri.
Two Purified Rnas Of Soil-Borne Wheat Mosaic Virus Are Needed For Infection, Yukio Shirako, Myron K. Brakke
Two Purified Rnas Of Soil-Borne Wheat Mosaic Virus Are Needed For Infection, Yukio Shirako, Myron K. Brakke
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
RNAs of soil-borne wheat mosaic virus (SBWMV) from virions 281 nm, 138 nm and 92 nm long (designated here by relative lengths as 1∙0L, 0∙SL and 0∙35L, respectively), were isolated and purified by three cycles of sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Infectivity assays with these RNAs proved the bipartite nature of SBWMV, the combination of 1∙0L and either 0∙5L or 0∙35L RNAs being required for infection and for multiplication of progeny viruses. The 0∙5L RNA underwent deletion mutation, producing smaller variants with various sizes, of which 0∙4L and 0∙35L RNAs were confirmed to be functional in combination with 1∙0L RNA. The …

Seedcorn Maggot (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) Reproductive Biology And Techniques For Examining Ovarian Dynamics, L. G. Higley, L. P. Pedigo
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
We developed techniques for examining ovarian dynamics of the seedcorn maggot, Delia platura (Meigen), and delineated detailed procedures for ovarian dissections and classifications.A three-class ovarian rating system was devised and physiological ages for each class were determined. The preovipositional period was 36 degree-days (DD) in the field and 100 DD in the laboratory. No ovarian development was observed unlessfemales had been given a protein food source. All females with ovarian development had mated.

Thirty bull and 30 heifer Hereford x Simmental calves were weaned at approximately 5 mo of age and assigned randomly to one of the following treatments: intact, conventionally castrated or luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone-immunized (LHRH). All animals were slaughtered at 16 mo of age and the right side of each carcass was electrically stimulated (ES) or restimulated (RES). Yield and quality grades were determined on both right and left sides after 24 h chilling. Longissimus muscles (LD) were obtained at 7 d postmortem for objective color measurements, chemical analysis, shear force and trained sensory panel evaluation. Semitendinosus muscles (ST) were also …
Ecological Distribution And Crude Density Of Breeding Birds On Prairie Wetlands, Harold A. Kantrud, Robert E. Stewart
Ecological Distribution And Crude Density Of Breeding Birds On Prairie Wetlands, Harold A. Kantrud, Robert E. Stewart
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Breeding populations of 28 species of wetland-dwelling birds other than waterfowl (Anatidae) were censused on 1,321 wetlands lying within the prairie pothole region of North Dakota. Ecological distribution and two crude measures of relative density were calculated for the 22 commonest species using eight wetland classes. Semipermanent wetlands supported nearly two-thirds of the population and were used by all 22 species, whereas seasonal wetlands contained about one-third of the population and were used by 20 species. Semipermanent, fen, and temporary wetlands contained highest bird densities on the basis of wetland area; on the basis of wetland unit, densities were highest …
Mutations, The Abberant Ratio Phenomenon, And Virus Infection Of Maize, Myron K. Brakke
Mutations, The Abberant Ratio Phenomenon, And Virus Infection Of Maize, Myron K. Brakke
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Viruses interact genetically in various ways with bacterial and animal hosts, e.g. by lysogeny in bacteriophage and by incorporating a DNA copy of retrovirus RNA into the host genome. These phenomena lead to mutations, to the transfer of host genes by viruses, and to latent viruses being transmitted from generation to generation essentially as host genes. In contrast, there are no known examples of the incorporation of viral genomes into plant DNA.
Spontaneous Deletion Mutation Of Soil-Borne Wheat Mosaic Virus Rna Ii, Yukio Shirako, Myron K. Brakke
Spontaneous Deletion Mutation Of Soil-Borne Wheat Mosaic Virus Rna Ii, Yukio Shirako, Myron K. Brakke
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The wild-type (WT) isolate of soil-borne wheat mosaic virus has two species of rodshaped virions 281 nm and 138 nm in length, which are designated as virions 1∙0L and 0∙5L, respectively. We reported previously that virions shorter than 0∙5L arose in assay plants inoculated with separated and recombined 1∙0L RNA and 0∙5L RNA and suggested that these short virions were caused by deletion mutation of 0∙5L RNA. We now report that these short virions arose after a period of several months in wheat plants that had been inoculated manually with unpurified WT isolate, and also when plants infected naturally in …

Notes: Differences Among Nematode Populations In Tall Fescue Pastures In North, Central, And South Alabama, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, R. Rodriguez-Kabana
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Surveys of nematode populations in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) pastures in north, central, and south Alabama in 1982 and 1983 showed significant differences in frequency of occurrence of many nematode species by geographical region. Although nematode damage has been implicated in the poor adaptation of tall fescue to the sandy soils of the extreme Southeast, many plant parasitic nematode species occurred in low frequency in south Alabama pastures. There were significant differences in the frequency of occurrence of Paratrichodorus christiei (Allen) Siddiqi by region. This nematode occurred with relatively high frequency in south Alabama in both years. There were …
Fuel Ethanol From Raw Corn, Curtis Weller, M. P. Steinberg, E. D. Rodda
Fuel Ethanol From Raw Corn, Curtis Weller, M. P. Steinberg, E. D. Rodda
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Crude amylase preparations were produced by growing Aspergillus awamori and A. niger on raw, ground, whole corn. These Koji preparations were used to hydrolyze the starch of raw, ground whole corn to sugars during simultaneous fermentation of the sugars to ethanol by distillers active dry yeast. Ethanol concentrations of the fermentation beers were determined with gas-chromatography. These fermentations yielded an average of 89.6% theoretical ethanol compared to control, conventional, fermentations that had an average of 89.9%. Carbon dioxide evolutions were determined with use of Alwood valves. The initial fermentation rate was greater for the conventional fermentation than the Koji fermentation. …
Tillage Influences On Erosion During Furrow Irrigation, Elbert C. Dickey, Dean E. Eisenhauer, Paul J. Jasa
Tillage Influences On Erosion During Furrow Irrigation, Elbert C. Dickey, Dean E. Eisenhauer, Paul J. Jasa
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Erosion and runoff from furrow irrigation of corn was measured for three conventional and three reduced tillage systems in 1981 and 1982. The plots were located on a Hastings silt loam soil having a 0.5% slope and a 366 m furrow length. Erosion was the least for slot-planting and greatest for the chisel system, ranging from 20 to 340 kg/ha, respectively, for the first 45 min of runoff during the first irrigation. Erosion from the fourth irrigation was about 75% less than from the first irrigation. Cumulative runoff after 45 min of runoff was similar for all treatments. Nutrient losses …

Tillage, Residue And Erosion On Moderately Sloping Soils, Elbert C. Dickey, David P. Shelton, Paul J. Jasa, Thomas Peterson
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Tillage treatments leaving 20% or more of the soil surface covered with residue reduced soil erosion by at least 50% of that which occurred from a moldboard plow system. No-till had the least erosion and tended to have the lowest cumulative runoff. These results were based on rainfall simulation tests on six tillage treatments used on both 5 and 10% slopes in continuous corn production.
Reduction Of Ferric Leghemoglobin In Soybean Root Nodules, Keuk-Ki Lee, Robert V. Klucas
Reduction Of Ferric Leghemoglobin In Soybean Root Nodules, Keuk-Ki Lee, Robert V. Klucas
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Reduction of ferric leghemoglobin to ferrous leghemoglobin in soybean nodules (Glycine max [L.] Meff. cv Woodworth) was studied using a spectrophotometer equipped with an in-cell space diffuse reflectance accessory. Nodule slices prepared and scanned under nitrogen gas showed a ferrous leghemoglobin absorption spectrum. Nodule slices equilibrated with 100% O2 or air exhibited two absorption bands characteristic of oxygenated leghemoglobin. The addition of CO shifted those bands to CO leghemoglobin absorption bands. Potassium ferricyanide was not effective in oxidizing ferrous to feffic leghemoglobin in nodule slices. However, ferric leghemoglobin was formed by treating the nodule slices with hydroxylamine, and …
The Role Of Recognition In Plant Disease, J. M. Daly
The Role Of Recognition In Plant Disease, J. M. Daly
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
As noted by Sequeira (110,111), the term recognition has become very popular in the literature of host-pathogen interactions over the last ten years. Despite recent facile usage, its meaning is not always clear to me. Recognition is defined by Clarke & Knox (16) as the "initial event in cell-cell communication that elicits a defined biochemical, physiological, or morphological response." This requires the not-so-easy task of defining "initial event" and "communica tion" with precise chemical or physical mechanisms. For pathologists, Se queira (110) has provided a more restricted meaning: "An early specific event that triggers a rapid, overt response by the …
Catabolite Repression Of Chloroplast Development In Euglena, Antonio F. Monroy, Steven D. Scheartzbach
Catabolite Repression Of Chloroplast Development In Euglena, Antonio F. Monroy, Steven D. Scheartzbach
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis resolved total cellular protein from Euglena gracifis Klebs var. bacillaris Cori into 640 polypeptides detectable by silver staining. The addition of 84 mM ethanol to dark-grown resting carbon- starved cells increased the relative amounts of 6 polypeptides and decreased the relative amounts of 3 polypeptides. The addition of 84 mM malate to resting cells increased the relative amounts of 3 of the ethanol-induced polypeptides, suggesting that the induction of these polypeptides represents a generalized response to the provision of a utilizable carbon source, a nutritional shift up, rather than a specific response to ethanol addition. Exposure of …
Herbivore Effect On Stature, Fruiting, And Leaf Dynamics Of A Native Crucifer, Svata M. Louda
Herbivore Effect On Stature, Fruiting, And Leaf Dynamics Of A Native Crucifer, Svata M. Louda
Svata M. Louda Publications
The impact of a native, leaf-feeding chrysomelid beetle (Phaedon sp. nr. oviformis) on bittercress (Cardamine cordifolia: Cruciferae), was evaluated in an exclusion experiment. Multivariate statistical analysis showed a significant increase in plant performance in the rotenone exclusion compared to performance in the paired control treatment. Plant response to the reduction of herbivory was a complicated, interrelated syndrome of changes. When insects were excluded, the amount of missing leaf area decreased significantly (3.6-fold; 3.2-0.9 cm2 per plant), and the total leaf area increased 5.7-fold (12.9-73.4 cm2 per plant). Plant height (5.7-20.3 cm) and fruit production …
Inflorescence Architecture And Evolution In The Fagaceae, Robert B. Kaul, Ernst C. Abbe
Inflorescence Architecture And Evolution In The Fagaceae, Robert B. Kaul, Ernst C. Abbe
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
First paragraph:
Inflorescence architecture is receiving increasing attention with respect to its role in the life of plants, but much remains to be learned of its effects on pollination and dispersal biology (see Wyatt, 1982). Little is known of the biology of fagaceous inflorescences or of their relationships with the growth or the reproductive patterns of the trees. Most studies (Abbe, 1974; Macdonald, 1979; Fey & Endress, 1983) have concentrated on the nature of the flower clusters (often called dichasia or partial inflorescences) and cupules. Hjelmqvist (1948) and Soepadmo (1972) briefly reviewed the variety of inflorescences in the Fagaceae. Čelakovský …

Helminth Parasites Of The Endangered Houston Toad, Bufo Houstonensis Sanders, 1953 (Amphibia, Bufonidae), Robert A. Thomas, Steven A. Nadler, W. Lynn Jagers
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The Houston toad, Bufo houstonensis Sanders, has an extremely restricted range in southeastern Texas, being known historically from 6 counties with viable populations remaining in only 2, Due to its relative rarity and federally protected status as an endangered species, its parasites have received attention only once. Harwood (1932, Proc. U.S. Natl Mus. 81: 1-71) identified 2 Harris County specimens of this toad as B. terrestris and reported Cosmocercoides dukae (Oxyuridae) in both and Oswaldocruzia pipiens (Diaphanocephalidae) in 1. In the course ofecological studies on the Houston toad, additional information on its parasitic helminths has been acquired.
Alcataenia Campylacantha (Krabbe, 1869) From Pigeon Guillemots, Cepphus Columba Pallas, And Black Guillemots, Cepphus Grylle (Linnaeus), And Alcataenia Sp. Indet. (Cestoda: Dilepididae) From Kittlitz's Murrelets, Brachyramphus Brevirostris (Vigors) In Alaska, Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Alcataenia campylacantha (Krabbe, 1869) is redescribed and reported for the first time from pigeon guillemots, Cepphus columba Pallas, in Alaska. Specimens of this cestode were also found in black guillemots, Cepphus grylle (Linnaeus) at Point Barrow, Alaska. There were no substantial differences in morphological characters between populations of this cestode from the North Atlantic and North Pacific basins. Additionally, Alcataenia sp. indet. is reported, with a partial description, from Kittlitz's murrelets, Brachyramphus brevirostris (Vigors), in Alaska. This constitutes the first record of dilepidid cestodes from birds of the genus Brachyramphus Brandt.

Alcataenia Longicervica Sp. N. From Murres, Uria Lomvia (Linnaeus) And Uria Aalge (Pontoppidan) In The North Pacific Basin, With Redescriptions Of Alcataenia Armillaris (Rudolphi, 1810) And Alcataenia Meinertzhageni (Baer, 1956) (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Alcataenia longicervica sp. n. (Cestoda: Dilepididae) is described from murres, Uria spp., in Alaska and other localities in the Pacific basin. From Alcataenia armillaris (Rudolphi, 1810), which it most closely resembles, A. longicervica is distinguished by larger size of organs (cirrus sac, vitelline gland, and seminal receptacle), greater number of testes, and extremely long neck. In specimens of A. longicervica there are 22-27 rostellar hooks distributed in two rows. Hooks in the anterior row measure 41-49 μm in length while those in the posterior are 38-48 μm. Two species of Alcataenia, A. armillaris and A. meinertzhageni (Baer, 1956), both …

Trematode Parasites Of Marine Birds In Antarctica: The Distribution Of Gymnophallus Deliciosus (Olsson 1893), Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
During continuing studies of avian helminths at Palmer Station, Antarctica (Hoberg 1983) trematodes were found as parasites only of charadriiform birds. Digeneans were not represented in extensive collections (including several thousand specimens of helminths) from spheniscids, procellariids, and phalacrocoracids.
The pattern of distribution of trematodes in marine birds in Antarctica is influenced by the availability of suitable intermediate hosts (mollusca) and the foraging behavior of potential final hosts. Littoral environments near Palmer are structurally simple and of low diversity due to ice scouring. The limpet, Nacella polaris, is the dominant intertidal invertebrate and one of the few molluscs that …
