Activation Of A Translocated Human C-Myc Gene By An Enhancer In The Immunoglobulin Heavy-Chain Locus, Adrian C. Hayday, Stephen D. Gillies, Haruo Saito, Charles Wood, Klas Wiman, William S. Hayward, Susumu Tonegawa
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
A tissue-specific transcriptional enhancer element that is associated with the human immunoglobulin heavy-chain locus is defined. In a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that contains a translocated c-myc gene this enhancer is retained on the 14q+ chromosome and occurs within sequences shown to activate previously cryptic promoters of the c-myc gene.
Regionalism And The Great Plains: Problems Of Concept And Method, Frederick C. Luebke
Regionalism And The Great Plains: Problems Of Concept And Method, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
American scholars have used the concept of regionalism to organize their thinking about certain aspects of national experience for many decades. Its meaning is imprecise because it has had to serve a broad spectrum of purposes. Inevitably regionalism means different things to different people; its content will vary with the purposes and standards of those using the concept. In literature, for example, a debate has been going on for a century over the merits of regionalism versus other theories ofliterary creation. Its intensity has waxed and waned with the times, but in our century regionalism in literature has achieved its …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage
This chapter confronts the question of what role cognitive abilities play or ought to play in educational achievement testing, which raises the prior question of what educational achievement tests are or ought to be. I begin by considering the nature of educational achievement as a construct in an attempt to circumscribe what achievement tests ought to be rather than by examining extant achievement tests that may be variously off target. Similar consideration is accorded cognitive ability as a construct. This distinction between constructs and the imperfect, variously contaminated tests that are purported to measure them is a critical recurrent theme …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage
What a happy occasion it is to celebrate, as we do in this volume, the establishment of a national Buros Institute of Mental Measurements, located on the campus of the University of Nebraska, in Lincoln. What a culmination of many plans, hopes, and dreams! On such an occasion, we can take a quiet pride in our profession and in the life and accomplishments of one of our colleagues and friends, Oscar Krisen Buros, who with Luella Buros is leaving to us, and our posterity, an institution of integrity to foster the science and practice of testing.
How new all this …
Simulation Analyses Of Space Use: Home Range Estimates, Variability, And Sample Size, Marc Bekoff, L. David Mech
Simulation Analyses Of Space Use: Home Range Estimates, Variability, And Sample Size, Marc Bekoff, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Simulations of space use by animals were run to determine the relationship among home range area estimates, variability, and sample size (number of locations). As sample size increased, home range size increased asymptotically, whereas variability decreased among mean home range area estimates generated by multiple simulations for the same sample size. Our results suggest that field workers should ascertain between 100 and 200 locations in order to estimate reliably home range area. In some cases, this suggested guideline is higher than values found in the few published studies in which the relationship between home range area and number of locations …

Aeromonas Hydrophila And Motile Aeromonad Septicemias Of Fish, Rocco C. Cipriano, G. L. Bullock, S. W. Pyle
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Aeromonas hydrophila and other motile aeromonads are among the most common bacteria in freshwater habitats throughout the world, and are frequently associated with severe disease among cultured and feral fishes. Determinations of the etiology of diseases involving aeromonad infections has been complicated by the genetic, biochemical, and antigenic heterogeneity of members of this group. Consequently, motile aeromonads consist of a complex of disease organisms that are associated with bacterial hemorrhagic septicemias in fishes. From descriptions of fish diseases in the early scientific literature, Otte (1963) speculated that septicemic infections in fish caused by motile aeromonads were common throughout Europe during …

An Assessment Of Lake Chubsuckers (Erimyzon Sucetta (Girard)) As Forage For Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides (Lacepede)) In A Small Nebraska Pond, Randle A. Winter
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
Lake chubsuckers (Erimyzon sucetta (Girard)) were introduced into two ponds to examine their suitability as a sustainable forage for largemouth bass (Micropterns salmoides (Lacepede)). A summary of lake chubsucker suitability followed the criteria of Bennett and Childers (1966).
Lake chubsuckers were capable of growing larger than the size range for predation by most largemouth bass, however, their growth rate made them vulnerable to largemouth bass for several years. Young of the lake chubsuckers were not available as forage for age 0 largemouth bass. Even though lake chubsuckers possess round bodies and soft rayed fins, this was not demonstrated …

Ec84-1757 Who's Who In Great Plains Songbirds, Ron J. Johnson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Habitat is where wildlife live. It contains all things needed for survival, such as shelter, food, water, and space. There are different types of habitat, each supporting different kinds of wildlife. Examples of habitat types include woodlands or areas with trees, grasslands, old fields, brushy areas, or wetlands.
This publication describes several favorite birds and includes information on their special habitat needs, unique characteristics, nesting sites, where they are found, and their habits or behavior. If you want to help the feathered wildlife described in this publication - or just about any wildlife for that matter - think habitat. You …

Five trials in five locations in the United States involving 512 steers were conducted to evaluate the effect of monensin [200 mg/d in .9 kg of supplement (Rumensin)] and estradiol- controlled release implants (Compudose) administered alone and in combination on average daily gain (ADG) in steers on pasture. The effect of energy supplementation on rate of gain was also evaluated in these same trials. The initial weight of steers averaged 250 kg and the average duration of the five trials was 124 d. Estradiol-controlled release implants increased ADG by 15.6% (.095 kg/d; P<.0001) and monensin increased ADG by 8.1% (.054 kg/d; P<.05). The combination of estradiol-controlled release implant and monensin increased ADG by 27.4% (.I68 kg/d). Treatment responses were additive relative to ADG response, with no interaction observed between the treatments. Nine-tenths kilogram of an energy supplement/d increased ADG by 12.4% (.073 kg/d; P<.Ol).
Discrimination And Generalization Of Leaf Damage By Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata), Pamela G. Real, Ruth Iannazzi, Alan C. Kamil, Bernd Heinrich
Discrimination And Generalization Of Leaf Damage By Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata), Pamela G. Real, Ruth Iannazzi, Alan C. Kamil, Bernd Heinrich
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) responded to projected black-and-white silhouettes of cherry leaves that were either undamaged or were damaged by either cryptic caterpillars that disguise leaf damage due to their feeding or by noncryptic caterpillars that do not disguise leaf damage due to their feeding. Pecks to the key on which the images were projected were reinforced only if interresponse times fell within specified temporal boundaries. These boundaries were different in the presence of the two types of leaf damage. Following training with one exemplar of each damage type, the jays correctly categorized novel instances of both types. …

Trophic Dynamics Of A Nebraska Black Crappie And White Crappie Population, Daryl G. Ellison
Trophic Dynamics Of A Nebraska Black Crappie And White Crappie Population, Daryl G. Ellison
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Diet variations of black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) and white crappie (Pomoxis annularis) were investigated at Hayes Center State Lake, a turbid 20-hectare state lake in southwest Nebraska. Zooplankton and insects accounted for most of the diet of all black crappie and of white crappie less than 200 mm long. The daily ration of planktophagic crappie declined to 1.3% as both species approached a length of 200 mm. Black crappie longer than 200 mm did not convert to fish and the daily ration declined to 0.8%. The dietary shift of white crappie to fish significantly increased the …

Effect Of Membrane Filtration Of Antimalarial Drug Solutions On In Vitro Activity Against Plasmodium Falciparum, J. Kevin Baird, C. Lambros
Effect Of Membrane Filtration Of Antimalarial Drug Solutions On In Vitro Activity Against Plasmodium Falciparum, J. Kevin Baird, C. Lambros
United States Public Health Resources
Antimalarial activities ofchloroquine, mefloquine, amodiaquine, and quinine in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum were diminished as a consequence ofmembranefiltration. Filtered drug solutions gave ID50 values up to 25-fold greater than those of non-filtered (ethanol-sterilized) drug solutions. Loss ofactivity byfiltration was overcome by increasing the drug concentration prior to filtration. Water solutions filtered through Millex-GSfilter units consistently showed an absorbance maximum at 277 nm, accompanied by a lesser peak at 225 nm. Water filtrates from Nucleopore and Millex-G Vfilters showed no absorbance at 277 nm and only slight absorbance was evidentfor the Gelmanfilter unit. Activity losses were attributed to extractable contaminating …

Dummy-Elicited Aggressive Behavior In The Polychromatic Midas Cichlid, George W. Barlow, William Rogers, Alan B. Bond
Alan Bond Publications
Aggressive responses of 12 individuals of the polychromatic Midas cichlid Cichlasoma citrinellum were tested with five different sizes of neutrally colored (spot pattern) life-like dummies. The dummies were presented daily over six days, for one minute apiece, in a balanced design. Color (gold or normal morph) and sex of the subjects were varied independently. The attacks and threats at the dummies were positively correlated in their occurrence so they were combined to yield an aggregate measure of aggression. Attacks on blinded juveniles, five minutes before and five minutes after viewing a dummy, were analyzed to test for the occurrence of …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide provides information on flea biology and how to solve flea problems.
Fleas are among the most annoying pests known to humans. In ancient times, fleas were even indicted, found guilty and sentenced to condemnation. Today, the verdict remains the same.
In Nebraska, fleas are common household pests attacking dogs, cats and sometimes people. In addition to these, several other flea species occur in Nebraska, feeding principally on rodents and occasionally on poultry and livestock. The information provided in this publication will focus primarily on cat and dog fleas, as they are the most commonly encountered species.

The Nutritional Value Of High Moisture And Reconstituted Sorghum Grain For Swine, J. D. Crenshaw, E. R. Peo, Jr., A. J. Lewis, B. D. Moser, T. D. Crenshaw
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A growing-finishing experiment involving 150 crossbred swine (replicated by time) and two metabolism experiments involving 36 crossbred barrows were conducted to determine the nutritional value of harvested high moisture (HMSG), reconstituted (RCSG) and dry sorghum grain (DSG) for swine. In Exp. 1, pigs fed HMSG diets gained the same, consumed similar amounts of feed, but less (P<.05) crude protein (equivalent dry matter basis) and had better (P<.05) feed conversion than pigs fed DSG diets.
