Cancer Morbidity In Lamp Manufacturing Workers, Harry S. Shannon, Ted Haines, Charles D. Bernholz, Jim A. Julian, Dave K. Verma, Ellen Jamieson, Chris Walsh
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
A historical prospective study of cancer in lamp manufacturing workers in one plant was conducted. All men and women who worked for a total of at least 6 months and were employed at some time between 1960 and 1975 were included. Work histories were abstracted and subjects were divided according to whether they had worked in the coiling and wire drawing area (CWD). Cancer morbidity from 1964 to 1982 was ascertained via the provincial registry, and was compared with the site-specific incidence in Ontario, adjusting for age, sex and calendar period. Of particular interest were primary breast and gynecological cancers …

Early Lake Ontogeny Following Neoglacial Ice Recession At Glacier Bay, Alaska, Daniel R. Engstrom, Sherilyn C. Fritz
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
This study explores the environmental forces controlling lake ontogeny at Glacier Bay as a model for early Holocene lake evolution in north temperate lakes worldwide. Long-term chemical and biological changes in lakes are investigated with two complementary research strategies: (1) limnological conditions are compared among 32 lakes of known age and in different stages of primary catchment succession and (2) sediment cores from these same lakes are analyzed stratigraphically for fossil diatoms to ascertain developmental trends in pH, alkalinity, algal composition, and trophic status at individual sites.
Trends in water chemistry inferred from the chronosequence approach include a progressive loss …

Insecta Mundi
This volume is the proceedings of an international conference on the evolution and phylogeny of Orthopteroidea, held in Siena, Italy, January 1986. The occasion for the conference was the 90th birthday of Dr. Felice Capra, of the Museo di Storia Nutrale di Genova. The proceedings consist of 53 papers, in English, ranging in length from 111 pages (Baccetti) to less than one page of text (Carlberg). Their subject matter is similarly diverse - as one would expect if more than 50 orthopterists were invited to give papers at a conference of this title.

Zoogeography, Ecology, And Systematics Of The Genus Rhagovelia Mayr (Heteroptera: Veliidae) In Borneo, Celebes, And The Moluccas, John T. Polhemus, Dan A. Polhemus
Insecta Mundi
The genus Rhagovelia is revised for the region comprising Borneo, Celebes, and the Moluccas. Redescriptions are given for species previously described from the area, and 26 new species are described. Figures of the dorsal habitus and key characters are provided for all species, accompanied by a key to species and distribution maps. Species occurring in the region are divided into eight monophyletic intrageneric species groups, some of which also contain members outside the region, based primarily on wing venation, thoracic morphology, and genitalia. A zoogeographic analysis is presented based on the distribution of these groups within the Malay Archipelago and …

Hexapod Herald and Other Entomology Department Newsletters
When the last Newsletter was published in 1976 (No.4), it was assumed that it would be followed by another In 4 or 5 years. And indeed, considerable effort has been expended on the production of No.5. However, for various very good reasons No.5, although close to publication several times, aborted several times. Now largely because this is the centennial year of our Department, we feel that we can wait no longer. Because of that fact, the format of this Newsletter will be slightly different from those in the past. We have the "news" that you furnished about yourselves 5 or …

Atrazine Dissipation And Off-Plot Movement In A Nebraska Sandhills Subirrigated Meadow, John J. Brejda, Lowell E. Moser, Patrick J. Shea, Steven S. Waller
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Atrazine [6-chloro-N-ethyl-N’-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine] can be used to modify species composition of naturally subirrigated Sandhills meadows. The potential for ground water contamination exists as the water table depth ranges from 0 to 3 m. Atrazine was applied at 2.2 and 3.4 kg ha-1 in May 1984, August 1984, or May 1985 to a Gannett fine sandy loam (Typic Haplaquoll, coarse-loamy, mixed, mesic) in a Nebraska Sandhills subirrigated meadow. Residues of atrazine applied in 1984 and 1985 carried over into 1985 and 1986, respectively. Herbicide dissipation and off-plot movement were monitored in 1985 by sampling soil at 0 to 5 cm and …

Voltinism And The Induction Of Aestival Diapause In The Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa Decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Maurice J. Tauber, Catherine A. Tauber, John J. Obrycki, Brian Gollands, Robert J. Wright
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Field studies over 3 yr demonstrated that overwintering populations of the Colorado potato beetle in upstate New York and on Long Island are composed of adults from both the first and second summer generations. The two populations from the climatically different regions differ in their responses to environmental factors that influence voltinism. The critical photoperiod for aestival diapause induction is longer, and the induction of diapause by low temperature is greater, in the population from the cooler, inland locality (upstate New York) than in the population from the warm coastal area (Long Island). Under the long days of early summer, …

Use Of Radiography In Behavioral Studies Of Turfgrass-Infesting Scarab Grub Species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), M. G. Villani, Robert J. Wright
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The behavior of turfgrass-infesting scarab grubs in response to soil physical properties may affect the stress that each species exerts on turfgrass and the efficacy of control tactics. To gain a more realistic picture of the events that occur within the soil matrix, we have developed a nondestructive X-ray technique to study soil insect movement and behavior in simulated and natural soil blocks in the laboratory Laboratory studies using this technique were done to determine the effect of some soil physical factors on scarab grub movement patterns. Species-specific differences were demonstrated in the responses of four scarab grub species (Japanese …

Identification Of Learning Styles Strategies Which Enable College Students With Differing Personality Temperaments To Cope With Learning Blocks, Gholam Hossein Zamani Zarghani
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to identify the major coping strategies which college students with different personality temperament used to deal with their learning blocks. Students' temperament type was obtained from the pool of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator results available at the Agricultural College, UN-L. An instrument measuring learning blocks was designed and administered in the Fall, 1987. The Coping strategy Inventory (CSI) was developed and administered in the spring, 1988. One hundred and twenty seven agricultural college students responded to the first phase of the study, and 230 agricultural college students took the CSI. The Statistical package for …

A Plea For Improved Presentation Of Type Material For Coccidia, Susan M. Bandioni, Donald W. Duszynski
A Plea For Improved Presentation Of Type Material For Coccidia, Susan M. Bandioni, Donald W. Duszynski
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The "true" coccidia (phylum Apicomplexa, suborder Eimeriina) constitute a large and heterogeneous group of parasitic protozoa. Despite the large number of described species (ca. 1,650) and the medical and veterinary importance of some (e.g., Toxoplasma), 2 facts are clear: (1) the majority of coccidia species are probably yet undescribed, and (2) the phylogenetic relationships of those described species are poorly known. Contributing to the latter dilemma is the lack of a tradition to provide type specimens by those who describe new species, even though the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature specifically recommends the designation of a type …

On The Status Of Eimeria Nieschulzi Oocysts Embedded In Resin Eleven Years Ago: A Permanent Method For Preserving Coccidian Oocysts, Alan A. Marchiondo, Donald W. Duszynski
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria nieschulzi that were fixed and mounted on glass slides in polymerized resin in 1976 are examined. Size, shape, and integrity of oocysts and sporocysts are compared to similar observations we made in 1977 and reported in 1978 (Journal of Parasitology 64: 163-164). Our conclusion is that the methods we reported on in 1978 provide one opportunity to produce permanent specimens of sporulated oocysts that could be made available for deposit in nationally accredited museums.

Measurement Of Flow Components On Upland Areas Using Dye Dilution Techniques, S. C. Finkner, John E. Gilley
Measurement Of Flow Components On Upland Areas Using Dye Dilution Techniques, S. C. Finkner, John E. Gilley
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Dye dilution techniques can be used to measure rill and interrill-to-rill flow rates on upland areas. Procedures and equations for making flow measurements are described along with equations for estimating interrill length and width. If measurements of interrill length and rill width are available, use of simplified flow equations is possible.
Water and dye continuity concepts were utilized to develop generalized interrill-to-rill flow relationships. Measurement of flow from interrill-to-rill areas requires information on the concentration and rate of dye injection, and flow rate and dye concentration on both rill and interrill areas at a downslope sampling location. Dye dilution techniques …

Isolation And Characterization Of Monoclonal Antibodies Directed Against Plant Plasma Membrane And Cell Wall Epitopes: Identification Of A Monoclonal Antibody That Recognizes Extensin And Analysis Of The Process Of Epitope Biosynthesis In Plant Tissues And Cell Cultures, David J. Meyer, Claudio L. Alfonso, David W. Galbraith
Papers in Microbiology
Membranes from tobacco cell suspension cultures were used as antigens for the preparation of monoclonal antibodies. Use of solid phase and indirect immunofluorescence assays led to the identification of hybridomas producing antibodies directed against cell surface epitopes. One of these monoclonal antibodies (ll.D2) was found to recognize a molecular species which on two-dimensional analysis (using nonequilibrium pH-gradient electrophoresis and SDS-PAGE) was found to have a high and polydisperse molecular mass and a very basic isoelectric point. This component was conspicuously labeled by [3H]proline in vivo. The monoclonal antibody cross-reacted with authentic tomato extensin, but not with potato lectin nor larch …

Ingestion Of Lead Shot And Aluminum Bands By Bald Eagles During Winter In Nebraska, Gary Lingle, Gary Krapu
Ingestion Of Lead Shot And Aluminum Bands By Bald Eagles During Winter In Nebraska, Gary Lingle, Gary Krapu
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalusis) a common winter resident along the Platte and North Platte rivers in southcentral Nebraska. Waterfowl are a major food of eagles during periods when fish are not readily available (Lingle and Krapu 1986). Eating ducks and geese can make eagles susceptible to lead poisoning, a significant cause of mortality of Bald Eagles in North America (Kaiser et al. 1980). Eagles ingest lead shot from waterfowl by eating shot imbedded in tissues or as part of the contents of digestive tracts. In this paper we describe the incidence of lead shot and Fish and …
Two Species Of Marsh Wren (Cistothorus Palustris) In Nebraska, Donald E. Kroodsma
Two Species Of Marsh Wren (Cistothorus Palustris) In Nebraska, Donald E. Kroodsma
Nebraska Bird Review
The consequences of a grand evolutionary experiment are evident throughout Nebraska. During the Pleistocene, many taxa were apparently separated into eastern and western populations. Today many of these eastern and western counterparts meet in the Great Plains, especially in Nebraska. Some pairs now hybridize freely (towhees. orioles. flickers), while others do not (buntings, grosbeaks, meadowlarks) (see Rising 1983).
The Marsh Wren is still another, previously unrecognized, taxon that consists of an eastern and western counterpart. Data from Nebraska and elsewhere in North America suggest that there are two forms of the Marsh Wren, perhaps as vocally different from each other …

Book Review: Veterinary Genetics By F W Nicholas, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
This book, by a well-respected senior lecturer in animal genetics, contains everything a veterinarian is likely to need to know about genetics, and more. The coverage is comprehensive, with emphasis on the interplay of biology and the environment with genetics. Important areas of population and quantitative genetics are treated as non-mathematically as possible, with more complete development available in extensive appendixes.
