Fecal samples of 14 Conolophus subcristatus from Isla Plaza Sur and of 24 Tropidurus delanonis from Isla Española and several satellite islets, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, collected during June and July 1987 were examined for coccidian oocysts. None of the samples from C. subcristatus contained oocysts, but 11 of 24 (46%) samples from T. delanonis had oocysts when examined. Two Eimeria and 1 Isospora spp. were present, which we describe here as new species. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria tropidura n. sp. are ellipsoidal, 32.5 x 23.8 (21-38 x 19-30) μm, with spheroidal to subspheroidal sporocysts, 8.2 x 7.9 (7-10 x 5-10) …

Capping Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus Rna: Analysis Of Viral-Coded Guanylyltransferase-Like Activity, David Dunigan, Milton Zaitlin
Capping Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus Rna: Analysis Of Viral-Coded Guanylyltransferase-Like Activity, David Dunigan, Milton Zaitlin
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The 5’ end of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) genomic RNA is capped with 7- methylguanosine. A virus-coded polypeptide with guanylyltransferase activity has been investigated. This enzyme is responsible for forming the 5’→5’ linkage of guanosine 5’-monophosphate to the 5’- diphosphate of an acceptor RNA, thereby forming the cap. A critical step in the mechanism for cap formation in the eukaryotic nucleus is for guanylyltransferase to bind covalently to guanosine 5’- monophosphate with the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate when guanosine 5’- triphosphate is the substrate. The TMV 126-kilodalton protein, which is most probably a component of the TMV replicase, was found to …

Stress Cracking And Breakage Susceptibility As Affected By Moisture Content At Harvest For Four Yellow Dent Corn Hybrids, Curtis Weller, M. R. Paulsen, M. P. Steinberg
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Four hybrids of yellow dent com were harvested at three levels of moisture content. After drying, samples were analyzed for stress cracking and susceptibility to breakage in Wisconsin (WBT) and Stein (SBT) breakage testers. Significant differences in stress cracking and breakage susceptibility as determined with the WBT and the SBT were observed among the four hybrids. Breakage susceptibility as measured with the WBT and SBT significantly increased as the harvest moisture increased. Stress cracks increased significantly as harvest moisture increased within the drying air temperatures of 49, 71, and 93° C. WBT breakage susceptibility significantly increased as drying air temperature …

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Sexual selection may be a major factor in the proliferation of polygamous species (Lande 1981). When males provide no resources or parental care and females have numerous males from which to choose, "extravagant" male secondary characteristics may result solely from sexual selection (Darwin 1871; Fisher 1930; Lande 1981). Dominey (1984) argued that such "runaway" sexual selection was the driving mechanism behind the explosive speciation of the polygamous cichlid fishes in the Great Lakes of Africa. However, the few studies examining cichlid mate selection in situ have concentrated primarily on species engaging in biparental care of the young (Perrone 1978; Neil …

Alternative Animal Models With Maternal Effects And Foster Dams, L. Dale Van Vleck
Alternative Animal Models With Maternal Effects And Foster Dams, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Effects of foster dams can be included in genetic evaluations using animal models with maternal effects in several ways. The alternatives discussed involve minor changes in computing strategies from strategies used with reduced animal models that predict breeding values for direct and maternal effects. The easiest alternative is to assign foster dams to groups by breed and time period and add equations for fixed effects of breed-period. Random and, assumed, independent effects of foster dams can be nested in breed-period groups. If foster dams do not repeat. then those effects can be absorbed into equations for other fixed effects, additive …

Self-Study Report: 03 Strategic Plans
Self-Study Report: 03 Strategic Plans
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History
Much time and effort have gone into the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and the Department of Agricultural Education's strategic planning effort. Coincidentally, the Department had started its own process of strategic planning in the summer of 1987 where it identified the four departmental "thrust" areas.
The IANR process was started in the fall of 1987 by the Vice Chancellor Omtvedt of the Institute and was to be followed by a series of meetings, not only within the Institute, but with town hall meetings around Nebraska, to ensure a broad representation of input regarding future directions of IANR. …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History
Agriculture and agribusiness are Nebraska's dominant industries. Ninety-six percent (47.1 million acres) of the state's land area is occupied by 55,000 farms and ranches. Over one-half of the states workers depend upon agriculture and business for their livelihood. The average growing season ranges from 170 days in southeast Nebraska to 120 days in the northwest. Underneath Nebraska is stored nearly 2 billion acre-feet of water, and in Nebraska we receive an average of 90 million acre-feed of precipitation yearly.
Approximately 17 million acres are utilized as cropland, of which approximately 8 million are irrigated. Corn, soybeans, winter wheat, and sorghum …

Plant Morphology And Herbivory: Review Of M.J.A. Werger Et Al., Eds., Plant Form And Vegetation Structure: Adaptation, Plasticity And Relation To Herbivory, Svata M. Louda
Svata M. Louda Publications
This edited volume contains 26 contributed papers presented at the International Symposium on Vegetation Structure in Utrecht 14-18 July 1987. The editors organize the papers into three broadly related areas: (1) morphological plasticity of plant growth form in response to environmental variation, (2) morphological and ecological aspects of dry matter partitioning, and (3) herbivory in plant growth and plant community structure. All of the papers take a functional view of plant growth form and vegetation architectural structure, to one extent or another. The papers are uneven; stated objectives, scope of the subject matter covered, and degree of conceptualization vary substantially …

Twinning In Cattle: 111. Effects Of Twinning On Dystocia, Reproductive Traits, Calf Survival, Calf Growth And Cow Productivity, K. E. Gregory, S. E. Echternkamp, G. E. Dickerson, Larry V. Cundiff, R. M. Koch, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
An evaluation of natural twinning in beef cattle revealed that cows birthing twins had shorter (P < .0l) gestation lengths, more (P < .0l) retained placentas, more (P < .01) dystocia, more (P < .0l) days to estrus, lower (P < .0l) conception rates and more (P < .01) days to pregnancy than cows birthing singles. Days to estrus, conception rate and days to pregnancy were not affected by number of calves reared (1 vs 2) in cows birthing twins. Survival at birth was greater (P < .0l) for single- than for twin-born calves, but twins and singles did not differ (P > .05) in postnatal survival. When dystocia was experienced, calf survival at birth was 95% vs 73% for singles vs twins compared with 99% vs 92% when no dystocia was experienced. Calves born twins were lighter (P < .01) at birth, 100 d and 200 d, but twins and singles did not differ in postweaning gains. Total calf weights at 100 d per cow calving were 12% greater (P < .01) in cows birthing twins vs singles when twin calves reared by foster dams were! excluded. The potential increase in cow productivity for total calf weight at 100 d is 40% if calf survival rates of twins with dystocia relative to survival rates of twins without dystocia were comparable to survival rates of singles with and without dystocia, and if cows birthing twins were fed and managed to obtain conception rates equal to those of cows birthing singles. Identification of cows gestating twins to provide for their higher prepartum nutritive requirements and calving assistance at parturition is necessary to make twinning in cattle an economically viable technology.
Alternatives To Fisher's "Exact Test" For Analyzing 2 X 2 Tables With Small Cell Sizes, Richard M. Engeman
Alternatives To Fisher's "Exact Test" For Analyzing 2 X 2 Tables With Small Cell Sizes, Richard M. Engeman
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Rice (1988a) presents an interesting test for analyzing 2 X 2 contingency tables in the smaller sample size situations. His motivation was to provide an alternative to Fisher's "exact test" and his rationale was based on the application of a prior distribution to the probability of a success, 0, under the null hypothesis. We would like to briefly comment on these aspects of his paper and also discuss another alternative that was proposed a number of years ago.
