Four spontaneously derived serologically distinct classes of mutants of the Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus (PBCV-1) were isolated using polydonal antiserum prepared against either intact PBCV-1 or PBCV-1-derived serotypes. The oligosaccharide(s) of the viral major capsid protein and two minor glycoproteins determined virus serological specificity. Normally, viral glycoproteins arise from host-specific glycosylation of viral proteins; the glycan portion can be altered only by growing the virus on another host or by mutations in glycosylation sites of the viral protein. Neither mechanism explains the changes in the glycan(s) of the PBCV-1 major capsid protein because all of the viruses were grown in …
The Phylogenetic Component Of Cooperative Breeding In Perching Birds: A Commentary, Deborah A. Mclennan, Daniel R. Brooks
The Phylogenetic Component Of Cooperative Breeding In Perching Birds: A Commentary, Deborah A. Mclennan, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The study of behavioral and ecological evolution within a phylogenetic context (historical ecology; Brooks and McLennan 1991) is an important component of comparative studies in evolutionary biology. Although the number of historical ecological studies is growing rapidly, this research field is still in its infancy--an infancy whose maturation is hampered by the absence of rigorous phylogenetic hypotheses for many of the groups that have traditionally fascinated behavioral ecologists. In the absence of such critical information, behavioral ecologists are faced with the options either of forming cooperative groups with phylogenetic systematists or of investigating their ecological data based on "trees" reconstructed …

The purpose of this study was to estimate the correlation between the expression of genes from sires in purebred and crossbred progeny (rPC) and in Hereford and Angus F1 calves (rHA). Performance traits were weights at birth, 200 d, and 365 d. Progeny from Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Angus bulls mated to Hereford or Angus cows were used to estimate rpc. Progeny from Charolais, Shorthorn, Simmental, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Chianina, Gelbvieh, Tarentaise, and Salers bulls mated to Hereford or Angus cows were used to estimate rm. Performances in purebreds (P) and crosses (C) or in Hereford …
Relations Between Social Skills And High-Risk Sexual Interactions Among Adolescents, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Relations Between Social Skills And High-Risk Sexual Interactions Among Adolescents, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Researchers have begun to employ social-skills training in efforts to change the sexual behavior of adolescents. However, despite the promise of social-skills training, little is known about how social skills are related to the sexual practices of adolescents. The present article reviews the current literature and proposes a conceptual framework for understanding the relations between social skills and sexual behavior of adolescents by (a)examining the relationship between sexual activity and social skills, (b) examining the development of sexual-interaction skills and deficits, (c) summarizing what is currently known about the relations between social skills and sexual behavior, (d) discussing current issues …

Differential Mating Success Of Male Wing Morphs Of The Cricket, Gryllus Rubens, Cami L. Holtmeier, Anthony J. Zera
Differential Mating Success Of Male Wing Morphs Of The Cricket, Gryllus Rubens, Cami L. Holtmeier, Anthony J. Zera
Anthony Zera Publications
Genetically marked individuals were used to study differential mating success between male wing morphs of the cricket, Gryllus rubens. Previous studies of Gryllus rubens and other wing-dimorphic insects have documented that flightless short-winged or wingless females typically attain reproductive maturity earlier and oviposit more eggs relative to their long-winged counterparts. This study was done to determine if flightless males also exhibit enhanced reproductive characteristics. Segregation analyses documented the genetic basis of allozymes used to infer paternity in subsequent experiments. Control experiments documented the absence of effects on mating success independent of wing morph due to (1) the genetic stock …

Our hypothesis was that conception in bovine females would be enhanced if the corpus luteum was present during the period of progestin treatment to synchronize estrus. In this study, 67 heifers (one replicate) and 124 cows (two replicates) were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. Seven days after estrus (Day 0), all animals were implanted with norgestomet and the implant remained in place for 10 days. All implants were removed on Day 17. Cows and heifers in one group received prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) on Day 7 of the estrous cycle (PG 7; norgestomet without corpus …
Relative Effectiveness Of Mixed Radiation Fields, Robert Katz
Relative Effectiveness Of Mixed Radiation Fields, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
For all one-hit detectors the relative effectiveness of a mixed radiation field may be found as the dose-weighted average of the relative effectiveness of its components, segregated according to the atomic number Z and the energy T. We emphasize that this procedure is incorrect for mammalian cells, whatever the nature of the segregation.

Angular Distributions For Near-Threshold (E,2E) Processes For Li And Mg, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
Distorted-wave calculations of the triply differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of Li and Mg are presented for the coplanar, θ12=π geometry in which the final-state electrons share 2 eV of excess energy equally. Our theoretical approach, described in detail elsewhere [C. Pan and A. F. Starace, Phys. Rev. A 45, 4588 (1992)], employs a partial-wave expansion of initial- and final-state wave functions, treats direct and exchange interactions of initial and final electrons with the target core, and treats the final-state interaction between the two continuum electrons by a screening potential. Li and Mg targets are found to …

Samuel Aughey’S List Of Nebraska Birds (1878): A Critical Evaluation, Roger S. Sharpe
Nebraska Bird Review
The University of Nebraska was founded in Lincoln in 1869, but finances did not allow the addition of a scientist until 1875, when Samuel Aughey was added to the staff to fill the first chair of natural history (Pound and Clements 1900). Although a theologian by training, Aughey wrote prolifically on a number of natural history subjects pertaining to Nebraska, including its flora, fauna, and geology. A summary of his impressions of the natural history of the state, including its biota, was published in a book, "Sketches of the Physical Geography and Geology of Nebraska" (Aughey 1880), which was printed …

New Species Of Cerobasis And Psyllipsocus From Mexico, And A List Of Mexican Trogiomorpha (Psocoptera), Alfonso Neri Garcia Aldrete
Insecta Mundi
Three new species of Cerobasis (Trogiidae) and three new species of Psyllipsocus (Psyllipsocidae) from Mexico are here described, which rises to seven the number of Mexican Cerobasis, and rises to nine the number of Mexican Psyllipsocus. Identification keys for the Mexican species of both genera are provided. The Mexican species of Trogiomorpha are thus known to consist of 46 species, of which 25 (54%) are endemic to this country. Lists of Cerobasis and Psyllipsocus species are presented, as well as a list of the known Mexican Trogiomorpha, including the distribution in this country of each species.

Extending Continuous Versus Discontinuous Conditioned Stimuli Before Versus After Unconditioned Stimuli, Melody Albert, Sean Ricker, Rick A. Bevins, John J.B. Ayres
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Conditioned suppression was used with rats to study the effects of extending conditioned stimuli (CSs) before versus after the delivery of unconditioned stimuli. These extensions are termed B and A extensions, respectively. Within-group designs were used to compare the effects of extending CSs when 2-min parts of those CSs were separated by temporal gaps of 6 min versus a separation of no gap. The results were as follows: (a) B extensions weakened conditioning more than did A extensions, with or without gaps; (b) under some conditions, this asymmetrical effect persisted with extended training; (c) gaps between 2-min parts of a …
Simulated Thermal Performance Of A Solar Heated Floor, Michael F. Kocher, James A. Deshazer, Gerald R. Bodman
Simulated Thermal Performance Of A Solar Heated Floor, Michael F. Kocher, James A. Deshazer, Gerald R. Bodman
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
A low cost, simple solar heating system consisting of an active collector with an In-Floor Heat Distribution and Storage (IFHDS) system was developed in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s. A two-dimensional finite difference model was developed and used to simulate the performance of IFHDS system cross-sections. Simulation runs were conducted with a steady-periodic model for the temperature of the solar-heated air in the IFHDS system cross-section. The steady periodic simulation results indicated IFHDS system energy efficiency increases with decreasing air temperature in the room above the IFHDS system, peak temperature of the solar-heated air in the IFHDS …
Order Matters, And Thus So Does Timing: Graphical Clocks And Process Synchronicity, F. Gregory Hayden
Order Matters, And Thus So Does Timing: Graphical Clocks And Process Synchronicity, F. Gregory Hayden
College of Business: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is, first, to review definitions of time; second, to discuss particular dimensions of time; and third, to relate those dimensions to graphical clocks. The value of such clocks for network analysis will be discussed.' The clocks for the integration of system networks will be computerized matrices and concomitant digraphs (graphical clocks). Such networks can be used to provide a standardized system clock to determine timeliness. This places events into a common system, which is timed by sequenced events. The coordination of broadly recurring sets of meaningful events characterizes synchronicity. Thus, timeliness is defined by system …

Management Of University Biological Collections: A Framework For Policy And Practice, Patrick E. Mcguire, Lynn S. Kimsey, Scott Lyell Gardner
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
A broad-based task force, chaired by Lynn Kimsey of the Department of Entomology and director of the Bohart Entomological Museum, was convened to review and assess the status of living and preserved biological collections held on the Davis campus of the University of California. The task force addressed three basic issues, forming subcommittees to 1) review the data gathered in a survey by the Genetic Resources Conservation Program of living and preserved collections and report its findings, 2) make recommendations for policy guidelines on a campus basis and an individual-collection basis, and s) propose a campus-wide administrative structure to address …
