A New Species Of Gall Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) From Subterranean Stem Galls Of Licania Michauxii (Chrysobalanaceae) In Florida, Raymond Gagne, Kenneth Hibbard

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

A new species of gall midge is described from subterranean stem galls on Licania michauxii Prance from Florida. The gall former is a new species of Lopesia and the first record of this genus in North America. The limits of Lopesia, a genus previously recorded only from South America and Africa, are enlarged to accept the new species. The species is described and illustrated. The pupa of this species is unique in Cecidomyiidae for its large, robust, dorsal abdominal spines that may be used in pushing through sandy soil after leaving the gall.

The Future Of Wildlife Damage Management—And Why I Want To Be A Part Of It, Scott R. Craven Jan 1996

The Future Of Wildlife Damage Management—And Why I Want To Be A Part Of It, Scott R. Craven

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 17th (1996)

Welcome to the 17th Vertebrate Pest Conference; THE conference for those of us who work in the field of vertebrate pest management. Actually, I prefer the term wildlife damage management to either animal damage control or vertebrate pest control, but as long as one takes a broad perspective on the definition of wildlife, there is really no difference except perhaps in perception. I do not mean to suggest that the name of the Vertebrate Pest Conference should be changed. It should not be changed. However, I do suggest that no matter what umbrella term you operate under, we are all …

Animal Rights And The Need To Understand Nature; A Debate, Walter E. Howard Jan 1996

Animal Rights And The Need To Understand Nature; A Debate, Walter E. Howard

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 17th (1996)

As various societies, especially in the developed countries of the world, acquired a better life-style and standard of living, a common trend developed toward treating animals more humanely, especially the domestic ones. But the movement was too slow, and the animal rights movement captured this void and established a new ethic. Unfortunately, this was done without a full appreciation of the laws of nature. Even though this movement was clearly needed, some people have carried it too far.

Tonight, hopefully, we can have some good constructive discussions from the audience on this subject after Dr. Steve Sapontzis and I first …

Reducing Livestock Depredation Losses In The Nepalese Himalaya, Rodney M. Jackson, Gary G. Ahlborn, Mahesh Gurung, Som Ale Jan 1996

Reducing Livestock Depredation Losses In The Nepalese Himalaya, Rodney M. Jackson, Gary G. Ahlborn, Mahesh Gurung, Som Ale

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 17th (1996)

In the Nepalese Himalaya conflict with rural communities due to livestock predation to large carnivores like snow leopard, common leopard, wolf and wild dog has risen sharply in recent years. This increase is attributed to a number of factors, including implementation and enforcement of wildlife protection laws (which have permitted a recovery in carnivore numbers), the creation of protected areas (which serve as refuges from which predators can populate the surrounding area), the depletion of natural prey due to poaching and loss of habitat, and lax livestock herding practices. However, little information is presently available upon which to design remedial …

Ecological Challenges To Controlling Wild Rabbits In Australia Using Virally-Vectored Immunocontraception, C. K. Williams Jan 1996

Ecological Challenges To Controlling Wild Rabbits In Australia Using Virally-Vectored Immunocontraception, C. K. Williams

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 17th (1996)

The European wild rabbit in Australia threatens the sustainability of agriculture and conservation of native flora and fauna. Improved means of reducing these impacts are sought including effort to develop virally vectored immunocontraception (VVIC). VVIC for the wild rabbit involves complex interactions between the rabbit, myxoma virus and insect vectors of the virus. Development of the method includes not only reproductive molecular biology and genetics and manipulation of virus genetics, but also many problems in reproductive biology, ecology and population dynamics of the rabbit in diverse environments. Furthermore, epidemiology of enzootic myxomatosis, and behavior and population dynamics of several vector …

A General Protocol For Restoration Of Regulated Rivers, Jack A. Stanford, J. V. Ward, William J. Liss, Christopher A. Frissell, Richard N. Williams, James A. Lichatowich, Charles C. Coutant

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Large catchment basins may be viewed as ecosystems in which natural and cultural attributes interact. Contemporary river ecology emphasizes the four-dimensional nature of the river continuum and the propensity for riverine biodiversity and bioproduction to be largely controlled by habitat maintenance processes, such as cut and fill alluviation mediated by catchment water yield. Stream regulation reduces annual flow amplitude, increases baseflow variation and changes temperature, mass transport and other important biophysical patterns and attributes. As a result, ecological connectivity between upstream and downstream reaches and between channels, ground waters and floodplains may be severed. Native biodiversity and bioproduction usually are …

Microbial Reduction Of Crystalline Iron(Iii) Oxides: Influence Of Oxide Surface Area And Potential For Cell Growth, Eric E. Roden, John M. Zachara Jan 1996

Microbial Reduction Of Crystalline Iron(Iii) Oxides: Influence Of Oxide Surface Area And Potential For Cell Growth, Eric E. Roden, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Quantitative aspects of microbial crystalline iron- (III) oxide reduction were examined using a dissimilatory iron(III) oxide-reducing bacterium (Shewanella alga strain BrY). The initial rate and long-term extent of reduction of a range of synthetic iron(III) oxides were linearly correlated with oxide surface area. Oxide reduction rates reached an asymptote at cell concentrations in excess of ≈1 x 109/m2 of oxide surface. Experiments with microbially reduced goethite that had been washed with pH 5 sodium acetate to remove adsorbed Fe(II) suggested that formation of a Fe(II) surface phase (adsorbed or precipitated) limited the extent of iron(III) oxide …

Pesticides In Streams Draining Agricultural And Urban Areas In Colorado, Robert Kimbrough, David Litke

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A study was conducted from April 1993 through April 1994 to describe and compare the occurrence and distribution of pesticides in streams in a small agricultural and a small urban area in Colorado. Twenty-five water samples collected at least monthly at the mouths of two tributary streams of the South Platte River were analyzed for 47 pesticides. The results indicate that both agricultural and urban areas are probable sources for pesticides in streams. In the agricultural area, 30 pesticides were detected, and in the urban area, 22 pesticides were detected in one or more samples. Most often, the more frequently …

Sources Of Variation In Counts Of Meristic Features Of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Bouvieri), Carter Kruse, Wayne Hubert, Frank Rahel

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We determined variability in counts of meristic features (pyloric caecae, vertebrae, pelvic fin rays, gillrakers, basibranchial teeth, scales above the lateral line, and scales in the lateral series) of Yellowstone cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki bouvieri ) by 3 independent readers, by the same reader on 3 different occasions, and among fish from 12 sampling sites within a 650-km2 watershed. Genetic purity of the cutthroat trout was determined by electrophoretic analysis. Significant differences in meristic counts were observed among 3 readers and among sampling sites, but not among 3 occasions by a single reader. Scale counts were within the …

It has been hypothesized that antibody induced by Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein vaccine would be effective against endemic human malaria. In a malaria endemic region of Kenya, 76 volunteers, in 38 pairs sleeping adjacently, were immunized with subunit circumsporozoite protein Asn-Ala-Asn-Pro tetrapeptide repeatpseudomonas toxin A, or hepatitis B vaccine. After quinine and doxcycycline, volunteers were followed for illness daily, parasitemia weekly, antibody, T-lymphocyte responses, and treated if indicated. Anopheles mosquitoes resting in houses were collected, and tested for P. falciparum antigen, or dissected for sporozoites and tested for blood meal ABO type and P. falciparum antigen. Vaccine was safe, with …

Results Of A Biological Survey For Leptodea Leptodoll (Rafinesque, 1820) In The Missouri River In Southeastern South Dakota, Arthur H. Clarke

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

In late September and early October, 1995, a brail survey was carried out to determine the distribution of Leptodea leptodon (Rafinesque) in the Missouri River near Yankton and Vermillion, South Dakota. We did not find L. leptodon but useful information in three areas was nevertheless brought to light, viz. :

(1) Leptodea leptodon is unusual in that adults are deeply buried and are not available by brail. Subsequent investigations which seek to determine its abundance at its only known location in the research area, close below Gavin's Point Dam, can only be carried out with the help of a diver …

G97-1322 High Risk Youth, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1996

G97-1322 High Risk Youth, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide defines the relationship between adolescence and high risk behaviors, helps parent and adolescent identify external and internal assets and suggests parent strategies for promoting and increasing those assets.

American youth today are often considered to be in a state of crisis. Approximately half of all adolescents are at moderate to high risk of engaging in one or more self-destructive behaviors, including unsafe sex, teenage pregnancy and childbearing; drug and alcohol abuse; under achievement, failure, or dropping out of school; and delinquent or criminal behaviors. Many of these problem behaviors are interrelated. Some of these behaviors are related to …

Expression Of Human Protein C In Mammary Tissue Of Transgenic Mammals, William N. Drohan, Tracy D. Wilkins, William H. Velander, John L. Johnson

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Recombinant protein C characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic mammals that incorporate DNAs according to the present invention. Transgenic mammals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes protein C, such that the DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature mammals and inherited in normal, mendelian fashion.

An Assessment Of Burbot (Lota Iota) Weight - Length Data From North American Populations, Shannon J. Fisher, David W. Willis, Kevin L. Pope Jan 1996

An Assessment Of Burbot (Lota Iota) Weight - Length Data From North American Populations, Shannon J. Fisher, David W. Willis, Kevin L. Pope

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Declining buroot (Lola lola) abundance across some portions of North America has prompted a search for additional evaluation tools, including a measure of condition. Weight - length data were compiled for 10293 burbot from 79 North American populations. These data were used to develop a 75th percentile standard weight (W,) equation using the regression-line-percentile technique. The proposed equation is log10 W3 = - 4.868 + 2.898 log10 TL, where Ws is the standard weight in grams, and TL is the maximum total length in millimetres. The equation is valid for burbot ≥20 cm and …

Effects Of Red Imported Fire Ants On Northern Bobwhite Chicks, William M. Giuliano, Craig R. Allen, R. Scott Lutz, Stephen Demarais

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Populations of red imported fire ants (RIFA; Solenopsis invtcta) have spread rapidly throughout the southeastern United States. RIFA, directly or indirectly, negatively affect many wildlife species, and northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) appear to be particularly susceptible. We examined the effect of exposure to different numbers of RIFA for 15 and 60 seconds on body mass and survival of captive northern bobwhite chicks. Compared to unexposed birds, survival of chicks was reduced with exposure to as few as 50 RIFA for 60 seconds, or 200 RIFA for 15 seconds, and body mass was lower in chicks exposed to …

Egg Development In A High-Density Black Crappie (Pomoxis Nigromacuiatus) Population, Kevin L. Pope, Wade T. Geraets, David W. Willis

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Female black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) were collected from Richmond Lake, South Dakota" and egg-diameter frequencies were examined to document spawning strategy during 1994. Two hundred and sixteen adult females [mean total length (TL) ±SE = 204 ± 1 mm] were collected and 85,572 egg diameters were measured. Female black crappie gonadosomatic-index (GSI) values exceeded 8% from 18 May to 22 June 1994, and the density of larval black crappie caught with an ichthyoplankton net peaked on 8 June 1994. The GSI values and larval catches indicated that the population, as a whole, had a single extended spawn from …
