Revision Of The Anastrepha Benjamini Species Group And The A. Pallidipennis Complex (Diptera: Tephritidae), Allen L. Norrbom Jun 1997

Revision Of The Anastrepha Benjamini Species Group And The A. Pallidipennis Complex (Diptera: Tephritidae), Allen L. Norrbom

Insecta Mundi

The shape of the facial carina in Anastrepha is discussed. Although taxonomically useful, the protrudent form probably occurs by convergence in different species groups. Two species groups in which the carina is usually produced are revised. The benjamini species group includes: benjamini Lima (from southeastern Brazil), gigantea Stone (from Panama), magna, n. sp. (from Colombia and Venezuela), and superflua Stone (from Panama). Host data for this group are limited to only one record of benjamini from a species of Pouteria (Sapotaceae). The pallidipennis complex, which is included in the pseudoparallela species group, is recognized to include: amnis Stone (from …

Book Review: Biologie Des Coleopteres Chrysomelides By Pierre Jolivetj, R. H. Arnett Jr. Jun 1997

Book Review: Biologie Des Coleopteres Chrysomelides By Pierre Jolivetj, R. H. Arnett Jr.

Insecta Mundi

The main biological aspects of this economically important group of beetles, the Chrysomelidae, are summarized in this new work by the internationally known author, Dr. Pierre Jolivet. Around 37,000 species are now described and more remain to be named. The size and diversity of the family are less than those of the weevils (Curculionidae), but probably there will be a total of 40 to 50 thousand species once the canopy fauna is better known. For instance, we still know nothing about the biology and the host plants of the Madagascaran leaf beetles and surely many more species from that region …

Waiting For The Electrician Or Someone Like Him: Client-Centered Technical Services, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Academics are being admonished to be "client-centered"--generally used to mean consumer or customer-oriented. This paper looks at the origins of "client-centeredness" in mental health care, and explores the idea of "client-centered" academic institutions, specifically the technical services functions of academic libraries. Philosophical and practical recommendations for a client-centered technical services operation conclude the paper.

Coming To Terms With Heritability, Scott F. Stoltenberg Jun 1997

Coming To Terms With Heritability, Scott F. Stoltenberg

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The complex mechanisms of heredity are little appreciated by nonspecialists, in some measure, because of misunderstandings that are perpetuated when words used for technical terms have other, more widely understood, folk meanings. When a word has both technical and folk meanings, it is the responsibility of the specialist to avoid promoting confusion by either using extremely cautious and precise language when using the term or, in cases when confusion is inevitable, abandoning the term in favor of one without a widely understood folk meaning. The study of heredity is beset by such confusion, and the term heritability appears to be …

Gregarina Triboliorum (Eugregarinida: Gregarinidae) N. Sp. From Tribolium Confusum And Resolution Of The Confused Taxonomic History Of Gregarina Minuta Ishii, 1914, Stephanie Watwood, John J. Janovy Jr., Erica Peterson, Mary Ann Addison Jun 1997

Gregarina Triboliorum (Eugregarinida: Gregarinidae) N. Sp. From Tribolium Confusum And Resolution Of The Confused Taxonomic History Of Gregarina Minuta Ishii, 1914, Stephanie Watwood, John J. Janovy Jr., Erica Peterson, Mary Ann Addison

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

The septate gregarine parasites of flour beetles (Tribolium spp.) include Gregarina minuta Ishii, 1914, a relatively small species in which both primite and satellite possess an obvious protomerite, and a larger species that lacks the satellite protomerite. The latter species has been placed in the genera Didymophyes and Hirmocystis by various authors, but studies reported here demonstrate that this species, herein described as Gregarina triboliorum, exhibits early pairing and produces oocyst chains, both characteristics of the genus Gregarina. The oocysts of this new species are described for the first time. In addition, experimental infections using oocysts from …

The Aspergillus Nidulans Sepa Gene Encodes An Fh1/2 Protein Involved In Cytokinesis And The Maintenance Of Cellular Polarity, Steven D. Harris, Lisbeth Hamer, Kathryn E. Sharpless, John E. Hamer Jun 1997

The Aspergillus Nidulans Sepa Gene Encodes An Fh1/2 Protein Involved In Cytokinesis And The Maintenance Of Cellular Polarity, Steven D. Harris, Lisbeth Hamer, Kathryn E. Sharpless, John E. Hamer

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Cytokinesis (septation) in the fungus Aspergillus nidulans occurs through the formation of a transient actin ring at the incipient division site. Temperature-sensitive mutations in the sepA gene prevent septation and cause defects in the maintenance of cellular polarity, without affecting growth and nuclear division. The sepA gene encodes a member of the growing family of FH1/2 proteins, which appear to have roles in morphogenesis and cytokinesis in organisms such as yeast and Drosophila Results from temperature shift and immunofluorescence microscopy experiments strongly suggest that sepA function requires a preceding mitosis and that sepA acts prior to actin ring formation. Deletion …

Eimeria From Bats Of The World: Two New Species From Myotis Spp. (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), Damien T. Scott, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Between 1986 and 1995, 548 fecal samples were collected from 41 species of bats (Molossidae, Mormoopidae, Phyllostomidae, Thyropteridae, and Vespertilionidae) from New Mexico, California, Baja California Sur (Mexico), and Bolivia. Of these, the feces of 28 (5%) bats, including Antrozous pallidus, Myotis ciliolabrum, Myotis lucifugus, and Myotis yumanensis (Vespertilionidae), contained oocysts representing at least 3 species of Eimeria. A new species of eimerian from M. lucifugus (3/27, 11%) and M. yumanensis (8/70, 11%) is described. Sporulated oocysts are ellipsoidal, 22.3 × 14.8 (18-25 × 13-16) μm with micropyle (~2 μm) and polar granules (1-4), but an …

Eimeria (Protozoa: Eimeriidae) From North American Sciurids, Glaucomys Sabrinus And Tamias Townsendii: With A Description Of A New Species, Claire A. Fuller, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

From 1990 to 1991, 11 northern flying squirrels, Glaucomys sabrinus, and 30 Townsend's chipmunks, Tamias townsendii, were live-trapped, marked, and released in MacDonald Forest, Benton Co., Oregon and their feces at each capture examined for the presence of coccidian parasites. Two eimerians were found in G. sabrinus: Eimeria doreyi and a second species we describe here as new. One species, Eimeria vilasi, was identified from T. townsendii. Sporulated oocysts of the new eimerian are strongly ellipsoidal, pointed at 1 end, and are 47.2 × 25.0 (41-52 × 22-31) μm with ovoidal sporocysts, 19.0 × 10.5 …

United States Patent, Number: 5,633,447: Plant Tissue Comprising A Subgenomic Promoter, Paul G. Ahlquist, Roy C. French

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

A subgenomic promoter of a positive strand RNA virus is disclosed which directs the amplified expression of a structural gene in plant tissue. The core region and an upstream activating domain of the subgenomic promoter are identified. This promoter can be utilized in a modified virus. or in an appropriate engineered recombinant DNA derivative which may be chromosomally integrated or maintained as an episome in transformed cells.

Evidence For Quantitative Trait Loci Affecting Ovulation Rate In Pigs, Thomas A. Rathje, G. A. Rohrer, R. K. Johnson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Fifty-five microsatellite markers were scored in an F2 population of pigs (n = 114 females) developed at the University of Nebraska. The population was produced by crossing a line previously selected for 10 generations using an index of ovulation rate and embryonal survival and a line selected at random. The lines were from a common base population and differed by 6.7 ovulations and 3.1 fetuses at 50 d of gestation. Ovulation rate and number of fully formed and mummified pigs were recorded for each female. Data were analyzed with regression models that included random animal effects. Likelihood-ratio tests were …

Institutional, Evolutionary, And Demographic Contexts Of Gender Roles: A Case Study Of !Kung Bushmen, Patricia Draper May 1997

Institutional, Evolutionary, And Demographic Contexts Of Gender Roles: A Case Study Of !Kung Bushmen, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

In this chapter I have two objectives. One is to detail the consequences of changes in social structure for gender roles and to show how economic change affects the lives of males and females. The second objective is to explain how my perspective on the relationship between behavior and social structure has changed over time. More particularly, I have been influenced by ideas in evolutionary biology. Although I still see human beings as embedded in a cultural context, I also see that other insights come by viewing humans as another mammalian and primate species. These ideas will be elaborated more …

Restoring The Pre-Settlement Landscape In Stanley County, South Dakota, Susan E. Boettcher, W. Carter Johnson May 1997

Restoring The Pre-Settlement Landscape In Stanley County, South Dakota, Susan E. Boettcher, W. Carter Johnson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Settlement of the western United States resulted in clearing and degradation of many wooded areas. The loss of biodiversity and erosion of soil which followed produced a landscape which is still being restored. The first section of the paper reviews the settlement history of western South Dakota, describing the ecological effects of rapid population growth upon the landscape. The second part focuses on a smaller area, that of a family's ranch, which has undergone land management changes and woodland restoration since 1950. Studies which document an increase in woody species diversity and abundance, the population structure of trees, and the …

Review Of Wyoming: A Source Book By Roy A. Jordan And S. Brett Deboer, Jerry L. Godbey

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Wyoming's average year-round wind speed of 13 mph ranks first in the nation. The last stagecoach robbery in the U.S. occurred in Yellowstone National Park in 1915. The "equality state" boasts the highest population of elk, moose, mule deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, and sage grouse in the United States. The state of Wyoming is larger in surface area than 50% of the nations of the world. These are a few of the intriguing details offered in this useful volume.

Review Of Economic Thresholds For Integrated Pest Management Edited By Leon G. Higley And Larry P. Pedigo, Richard Plant May 1997

Review Of Economic Thresholds For Integrated Pest Management Edited By Leon G. Higley And Larry P. Pedigo, Richard Plant

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

If one were asked to pick the one scientific paper having the most influence on pest management, it would be hard to argue with the choice of "The Integrated Control Concept" by Stern, Smith, van den Bosch, and Hagen, published in 1959. This paper is generally regarded as having introduced the idea of economic threshold. The term "Integrated Control" soon gave way to "Integrated Management," emphasizing the notion that pest populations need to be managed in order to avoid unnecessary economic loss. Thus was born Integrated Pest Management (lPM). In the intervening four decades there have been some well-known books …

Review Of Retracing Major Stephen H. Long's Expedition: The Itinerary And Botany By George J. Goodman And Cheryl A. Lawson, Robert B. Kaul

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Earlier expeditions made incidental collections of plants and animals in Louisiana Territory, but the Long Expedition of 1820 was the first deliberately staffed with scientists assigned to that task. Authorized by President Monroe and Secretary of War Calhoun, the Expedition was directed to document plant and animal life and geology in the intimidating country between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains and to find the source of the Platte and Red Rivers in the mountains. All this was to be done quickly and, in fact, took only 100 days, June 6-September 13, 1820. Starting near present-day Omaha, the Expedition …

Transcriptional Patterns Of The Pcd41 (U27) Locus Of Human Herpesvirus 6, Yi Zhou, Bala Chandran, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a lymphotropic herpesvirus, and in vitro, it can productively infect many of the same cell types that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infects. Simultaneous infection of T cells by HIV and HHV-6 can lead to both activation of the HIV promoter and acceleration of the cytopathic effects. Several HHV-6 genes have been demonstrated to activate HIV promoter expression. Among them is a cDNA clone, pCD41 (U27), which codes for the HHV-6 DNA polymerase accessory protein. We have now further characterized the transcription pattern in the pCD41 locus and identified at least six RNA species, ranging in …

Tillage Effects On Soil Erosion Potential And Soil Quality Of A Former Conservation Reserve Program Site, John E. Gilley, J. W. Doran

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to determine the effects of tillage on soil erosion potential and soil quality characteristics of a former Conservation Research Program (CRP) site. Following tillage, the study area in northern Mississippi was maintained in a fallow condition for nine months. Soil loss from simulated rainfall events was minimal on recently tilled plots and an adjoining, undisturbed CRP area. In contrast, soil loss from the former CRP site which had been tilled nine months previously was similar to values obtained before the CRP program when the area had been cropped for several years. Tillage and over-winter fallowing caused …

Comparison Of Avrd Alleles From Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Glycinea, Lisa Wolfson Keith, Carol Boyd, Noel T. Keen, J. E. Patridge

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Avirulence gene D alleles resided on indigenous plasmids in races 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea (Psg), but the allele in race 1 appeared to be chromosomal. These were all nonfunctional avirulence genes because they neither induced the avirulence phenotype on Rpg4 soybean cultivars nor directed the production of syringolide elicitors when expressed in Escherichia coli cells. The predicted proteins encoded by the seven Psg avrD genes were very similar to that of a functional class II allele from P. syringae pv. phaseolicola G50 race 2, but contained mutations collectively …
