Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Livestock Confinement Systems, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing Jan 1998

Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Livestock Confinement Systems, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing

Nebraska Swine Reports

Managing the environmental risk associated with livestock production is a significant challenge. The degree of imbalance between the amount of nutrient input and nutrient output for a livestock operation provides insight into the underlying causes of nutrient-related environmental challenges. A nitrogen and phosphorus balance was constructed for 33 Nebraska livestock operations (including 17 swine operations). On most farms, substantially more nitrogen entered the farm (through purchased feed, fertilizer, etc) than left it in the form of animals, crops and manure sold. Most farms also had an accumulation of phosphorus. Size of the operation and the degree of integration between livestock …

Mallard Duckling Growth And Survival In Relation To Aquatic Invertebrates, Robert R. Cox, Mark A. Hanson, Christianne C. Roy, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Douglas H. Johnson, Malcolm G. Butler

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Identification and assessment of the relative importance of factors affecting duckling growth and survival are essential for effective management of mallards on breeding areas. For each of 3 years (1993-95), we placed Fl-generation wild mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) females on experimental wetlands and allowed them to mate, nest, and rear broods for 17 days. We manipulated invertebrate densities by introducing fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) at high densities in half of the wetlands on which broods were confined. Day- 17 body mass of surviving ducklings (n = 183) was greater for ducklings that were heavier at hatch; the …

Economic Importance Of Managing Spatially Heterogeneous Weed Population, John L. Lindquist, J. Anita Dieleman, David A. Mortensen, Gregg A. Johnson, Dawn Y. Wyse-Pester Jan 1998

Economic Importance Of Managing Spatially Heterogeneous Weed Population, John L. Lindquist, J. Anita Dieleman, David A. Mortensen, Gregg A. Johnson, Dawn Y. Wyse-Pester

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Three methods of predicting the impact of weed interference on crop yield and expected economic return were compared to evaluate the economic importance of weed spatial heterogeneity. Density of three weed species was obtained using a grid sampling scheme in 11 corn and 11 soybean fields. Crop yield loss was predicted assuming densities were homogeneous, aggregated following a negative binomial with known population mean and k, or aggregated with weed densities spatially mapped. Predicted crop loss was lowest and expected returns highest when spatial location of weed density was utilized to decide whether control was justified. Location-specific weed management resulted …

Evaluating Stress In Calves Weaned At Three Different Ages, Andrea Bueno, Todd Cappel, Chuck Story, Richard J. Rasby, Edd Clemens, Mark Dragastin

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of weaning calves at 150, 210 and 270 days of age (i.e. August, October and December, respectively). A total of 75 Angus x MARC II heifers calves were used in this study. Heifers were bled on the day of weaning and again at 2, 7, 14 and 28 days after weaning. Blood was analyzed for differential WBC, cortisol, T3 and glucose. Weight changes were recorded. The data suggests October weaned calves (210 days) had both greater blood cortisol and glucose at days 7, 14 and 28 post-weaning and greater weight gains when …

Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Feedlots, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing Jan 1998

Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Feedlots, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A balance between the nutrient inputs and the managed nutrient outputs balance was constructed for 16 Nebraska feedlots to provide insight to potential environmental risks. Substantial nitrogen and phosphorus imbalances were observed for many participating feedlots. Size of the livestock operation and the degree of integration of livestock with a cropping operations provided only limited explanation concerning nutrient balance variations observed among the feedlots. Substantially improved nutrient balances were achieved by those feedlots marketing manure nutrients to off-farm customers. A “sustainable” nutrient balance appears possible for larger feedlots actively marketing manure nutrients.

In Situ Method For Estimating Forage Protein Degradability, Ryan Mass, Greg Lardy, Rick Grant, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 1998

In Situ Method For Estimating Forage Protein Degradability, Ryan Mass, Greg Lardy, Rick Grant, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Four experiments including vegetative and dormant forages tested modifications of the in situ neutral detergent fiber nitrogen (NDFN) method of estimating forage undegraded intake protein (UIP). Experiments 1, 2 and 3 tested bag size, closure, rinsing, density, and reflux conditions. None of the modifications affected in situ NDFN content. Experiment 4 compared rates of in situ NDFN digestion calculated with or without correction for undegradability. A close relationship exists between rates calculated by the two methods. Modifications make the improved in situ NDFN method a more desirable means of estimating forage UIP than the standard method.

Susceptibility Of House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Larvae To Entomopathogenic Nematodes (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae, Steinernematidae, David B. Taylor, Allen L. Szalanski, Byron J. Adams, Richard D. Peterson Ii Jan 1998

Susceptibility Of House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Larvae To Entomopathogenic Nematodes (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae, Steinernematidae, David B. Taylor, Allen L. Szalanski, Byron J. Adams, Richard D. Peterson Ii

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The potential for entomopathogenic nematodes to control flies in cattle feedlots was determined by screening 40 strains representing 8 species of Heterorhabditis Poinar and 5 species of Steinernema Travassos for virulence toward 3rd-instar house flies (maggots), Musca domestica L. None of the 22 strains of Heterorhabditis infecting maggots caused significant levels of mortality in a filter paper assay. Ten strains of Steinernema infected maggots, of which 7 strains--4 S. carpocapsa (Weiser), 2 S. feltiae (Filipjev), and 1 S. scapterisci (Nguyen & Smart) caused significant mortality. Ten Heterorhabditis strains and 10 Steinernema strains successllly reproduced for 22 generations in maggots. No …

Computer Model For Simulating Almond Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Population Dynamics, James E. Throne, David W. Hagstrum, Jan Nawrot Jan 1998

Computer Model For Simulating Almond Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Population Dynamics, James E. Throne, David W. Hagstrum, Jan Nawrot

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We developed a computer model for simulating the population dynamics of the almond moth, Cadra cautella (Walker). The model incorporates previously published life history data for the almond moth developing on stored peanuts, Arachis hypogaea L., including stage-specific immature developmental time and survival and adult longevity and fecundity. The model was modified so that it also could be used to simulate almond moth population dynamics on stored, dried citrus pulp and stored corn (Zea mays L.). We tested the validity of the model by using 4 previously published data sets. The model was useful for interpreting population dynamics observed …

Fungal Colonists Of Maize Grain Conditioned At Constant Temperatures And Humidities, Donald T. Wicklow, David K. Weaver, James E. Throne

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Fungal colonization of shelled maize (Pioneer 3320) harvested from a field near Furman, South Carolina, in 1992 was determined after 348 and 751 days of continuous storage at each of seven temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, or 40°C) and four constant relative humidities, giving equilibrium grain moisture contents ranging from 9.4% to 17.5% m.c. in 28 grain conditioning environments. Twenty fungal species infected surface sterilized seeds and were recorded from these conditioned grain treatments, including species commonly found in preharvest maize [e.g. Acremonium zeae, Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium moniliforme (syn. F. verticillioides), Penicillium pinophilum (syn. P. …

Structure Of The Avian Oviduct With Emphasis On Sperm Storage In Poultry, Murray R. Bakst Jan 1998

Structure Of The Avian Oviduct With Emphasis On Sperm Storage In Poultry, Murray R. Bakst

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The macroanatomy, histology, and fine structure of the avian oviduct is reviewed and related to its role in fertile egg production. The avian oviduct functions as a biological assembly line, beginning sequentially with the deposition of the albumen around the fertilized or unfertilized ovum, then the shell membrane, and lastly, the shell, all within 25 hr of ovulation. While in transit through the oviduct, the fertilized ovum progresses to the pre-gastrulation stage of development.

Biological Control: An Important Component In Integrated Management Of Musca Domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) In Caged-Layer Poultry Houses In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Diana C. Crespo, Roberto E. Lecuona, Jerome A. Hogsette

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

An Integrated Management program to control Musca domestica L. was developed by evaluating cultural + chemical control, cultural + biological control + granular bait (IMP 1), and cultural + chemical + biological control + granular bait (IMP 2) in poultry houses in Argentina. Adult fly density was estimated by a modified Scudder-grid method. Percentage of house fly parasitism was estimated by direct and indirect methods. Spalangia endius Walker and Muscidifurax raptor Girault & Sanders were released at a rate of 10 parasitoids/hen/week. Complete absence of control practices allowed a sustained growth of the fly population. When larvicides and adulticides were …
