Transgenic corn and cotton that produce Cry and Vip3Aa toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are widely planted in the United States to control lepidopteran pests. The sustainability of these Bt crops is threatened because the corn earworm/bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is evolving a resistance to these toxins. Using Bt sweet corn as a sentinel plant to monitor the evolution of resistance, collaborators established 146 trials in twenty-five states and five Canadian provinces during 2020–2022. The study evaluated overall changes in the phenotypic frequency of resistance (the ratio of larval densities in Bt ears relative to densities in non-Bt ears) …

Evaluating Drill Interseeded Cover Crop Establishment And Nitrogen Impact In Irrigated Corn, Victor De Sousa Ferreira
Evaluating Drill Interseeded Cover Crop Establishment And Nitrogen Impact In Irrigated Corn, Victor De Sousa Ferreira
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The adoption of cover crops as a strategy to improve soil health and cropping systems sustainability is on the rise in the United States. PRE herbicides with soil residual activity are widely applied in corn production systems to prevent early season weed development, crop-weed competition, and yield loss. When preemergence herbicides are applied in the field, the active ingredients remain in the soil rhizosphere for a period of time, killing weed seedlings as they emerge. However, PRE herbicides can also impact the establishment of interseeded cover crops. Greenhouse bioassay was conducted to evaluate the preemergence herbicide carry-over potential to interseeded …
Transcorporeal Habitus: Adapting Sociological Embodiment To The Self-Conscious Anthropocene, Trevor Bleick
Transcorporeal Habitus: Adapting Sociological Embodiment To The Self-Conscious Anthropocene, Trevor Bleick
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The knowledge that humans have become a geological force necessitates a reimagining of what it means to be human. This thesis explores the ways in which bodies (both human and nonhuman) are represented within the self-conscious Anthropocene. This tripartite analysis, synthesized in the term ‘transcorporeal habitus,’ presents a framework through which we can better understand the ways bodies are entangled within a greater ecosystem. By drawing on the works of scholars in the fields of sociology, ecocriticism, and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) this thesis provides the groundwork for reimaging humanness in a period of immense change. A Robotic System For In-Situ Measurement Of Soil Total Carbon And Nitrogen, Husein Harun
A Robotic System For In-Situ Measurement Of Soil Total Carbon And Nitrogen, Husein Harun
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Surges in the cost of fertilizer in recent times coupled with the environmental effects of their over-application have driven the need for farmers to optimize the amount of fertilizer they apply on the farm. One of the key steps in determining the right amount of fertilizer to apply in a given field is measuring the amount of nutrients present in the soil. To ascertain nutrient deficiencies, most farmers perform wet chemistry analysis of soil samples which requires a lot of time and is expensive. In this research project, a robotic system was designed and developed that could autonomously move to …
Cellulosome-Forming Modules In Gut Microbiome And Virome, Jerry Akresi
Cellulosome-Forming Modules In Gut Microbiome And Virome, Jerry Akresi
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Cellulosomes are large multi-enzyme complexes encoded in the genomes of some microorganisms. Cellulosomes can degrade plant cell wall celluloses, commonly found in compost soils, forest floors and dietary fibers of farm animals. The hallmarks of cellulosome complexes are cohesins that form a large scaffoldin protein and dockerins that interact with cohesin to dock enzymes onto the scaffoldin. The dockerin-containing proteins often contain Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZyme) domains, predominantly the cellulases (e.g., GH48 and GH9 enzymes), which enable them to break down celluloses. A fascinating question is, has Nature also evolved other similar protein complexes that target other types of complex …

Studies Of The Role Of Mtorc1 In Modulating Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Function, Isaac Adediji
Studies Of The Role Of Mtorc1 In Modulating Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Function, Isaac Adediji
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling impacts intestinal inflammation by modulating the production of cytokines in both intestinal epithelial cells and macrophages. Recent evidence revealed that THP-1-derived macrophages with elevated mTORC1 activity (THP-1shTSC2 macrophages), exhibited increased proinflammatory cytokine production when stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) compared to counterpart macrophages with repressed or baseline mTORC1 activity. Furthermore, it has been shown that mTORC1 governs intestinal barrier function as evidenced by elevated transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and para/transcellular permeability in Raptor-depleted Caco-2 cells (cells with repressed mTORC1 activity) compared to Caco-2 cells with elevated or baseline mTORC1 activity. The present study …

Development Of A Scalable Edge-Cloud Computing Based Variable Rate Irrigation Scheduling Framework, Eric J. Wilkening, Derek M. Heeren, Yeyin Shi, Abia Katimbo, Precious N. Amori, Guillermo R. Balboa, Laila A. Puntel, Kuan Zhang, Daran R. Rudnick
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers
Currently, variable-rate precision irrigation (VRI) scheduling methods require large amounts of data and processing time to accurately determine crop water demands and spatially process those demands into an irrigation prescription. Unfortunately, irrigated crops continue to develop additional water stress when the previously collected data is being processed. Machine learning is a helpful tool, but handling and transmitting large datasets can be problematic; more rural areas may not have access to necessary wireless data transmission infrastructure to support cloud interaction. The introduction of “edge-cloud” processing to agricultural applications has shown to be effective at increasing data processing speed and reducing the …

Exploring The Interactions Between Sars-Cov-2 And Host Proteins, Sojan Shrestha
Exploring The Interactions Between Sars-Cov-2 And Host Proteins, Sojan Shrestha
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of the current pandemic, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 is considered to be of zoonotic origin; it originated in non-human animals and was transmitted to humans. Since the early stage of the pandemic, however, the evidence of transmissions from humans to animals (reverse zoonoses) has been found in multiple animal species including mink, white-tailed deer, and pet and zoo animals. Furthermore, secondary zoonotic events of SARS-CoV-2, transmissions from animals to humans, have been also reported. It is suggested that non-human hosts can act as SARS-CoV-2 reservoirs where accumulated …
Article Processing Charges For Open Access Journal Publishing: A Review, Ángel Borrego
Article Processing Charges For Open Access Journal Publishing: A Review, Ángel Borrego
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Abstract
Some open access (OA) publishers charge authors fees to make their articles freely available online. This paper reviews literature on article processing charges (APCs) that has been published since 2000. Despite praise for diamond OA journals, which charge no fees, most OA articles are published by commercial publishers that charge APCs. Publishers fix APCs depending on the reputation assigned to journals by peers. Evidence shows a relationship between high impact metrics and higher, faster rising APCs. Authors express reluctance about APCs, although this varies by discipline depending on previous experience of paying publication fees and the availability of research …

Mid-Gestation Maternofetal Inflammation Impacts Growth, Skeletal Muscle Glucose Metabolism, And Inflammatory Tone In The Ovine Fetus During Late Gestation, Zena Mariah Hicks
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Our 1st and 2nd studies assessed the impact of mid-gestation maternofetal inflammation on growth, skeletal muscle glucose metabolism, and inflammatory tone in the late gestation ovine fetus. The objective was to determine if inducing maternofetal inflammation during peak placental growth would lead to more profound IUGR characteristics in the fetus. MI-IUGR fetuses exhibited reduced body and skeletal muscle weights and hallmark asymmetric growth at late gestations. Fetuses had higher baseline glucose:insulin ratios and reduced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. Moreover, hindlimb glucose oxidation was impaired independent of glucose uptake. Skeletal muscle specific glucose uptake and oxidation was reduced in MI-IUGR …

A feedlot trial (Exp. 1) was conducted to evaluate the impact of removing modified distillers grains plus solubles (MDGS) on performance and carcass characteristics. Cattle with MDGS removed on either d 79 or d 43 had reduced final BW, DMI, and ADG. Cattle with MDGS removed on d 43 were 5% less efficient than cattle fed 20% MDGS throughout the entire 124-d feeding period. Cattle fed 20% MDGS throughout the whole feeding had the greatest HCW and LM area. There were no differences in backfat and marbling scores among treatments, and no differences in percent of abscessed livers. In conclusion, …
Contextualizing The Neural Vulnerabilities Model Of Obesity, Timothy D. Nelson, Eric Stice
Contextualizing The Neural Vulnerabilities Model Of Obesity, Timothy D. Nelson, Eric Stice
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
In recent years, investigators have focused on neural vulnerability factors that increase the risk of unhealthy weight gain, which has provided a useful organizing structure for obesity neuroscience research. However, this framework, and much of the research it has informed, has given limited attention to contextual factors that may interact with key vulnerabilities to impact eating behaviors and weight gain. To fill this gap, we propose a Contextualized Neural Vulnerabilities Model of Obesity, extending the existing theory to more intentionally incorporate contextual factors that are hypothesized to interact with neural vulnerabilities in shaping eating behaviors and weight trajectories. We …

Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous molecule that has a central role in signaling pathways involved in numerous physiological processes (e.g., vasodilation, neurotransmission, inflammation, apoptosis, and tumor growth). Due to its gaseous form, NO has a short half-life, and its physiology role is concentration dependent, often restricting its function to a target site. Providing NO from an external source is beneficial in promoting cellular functions and treatment of different pathological conditions. Hence, the multifaceted role of NO in physiology and pathology has garnered massive interest in developing strategies to deliver exogenous NO for the treatment of various regenerative and biomedical …

Crop models are valuable tools for examining the interactions of cultivar characteristics, environment, and management practices, and how they affect crop growth and development. The difficulty in finding all the data needed to set up a simulation can often deter potential users from utilizing a crop model. Model interfaces are necessary to make these complex tools accessible to end-users who may lack the expertise needed to work with the models directly, but who would benefit from the information generated by the models. As crop models vary in terms of input and output structures, there is no one universally compatible interface, …

Tillage, Green Manuring And Crop Residue Management Impacts On Crop Productivity, Potassium Use Efficiency And Potassium Fractions Under Rice-Wheat System, Sandeep Sharma, Pritpal Singh, Hayssam M. Ali, Manzer Hussain Siddiqui, Javed Iqbal
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The conventional crop production practices including intensive tillage and open field crop residue burning in world’ largest rice-wheat system (RWS) are adversely affecting crop productivity besides deteriorating natural resources and ecosystems’ sustainability. In order to improve system productivity, potassium (K) use efficiency and apparent K balance, adoption of conservation tillage in a RWS with residue management is considered highly effective. We therefore, studied the effect of wheat straw retention and green manure (GM) in rice (main plot treatment), and tillage and rice residue management in subsequent wheat (sub-plot treatments) on crop productivity, K use efficiency and its transformation amongst different …
