A Choreography Of Living Texts: Selections From The Arst Oral History Project, Kenny Walker, Jennifer Malkowski, Damien S. Pfister Jul 2014

A Choreography Of Living Texts: Selections From The Arst Oral History Project, Kenny Walker, Jennifer Malkowski, Damien S. Pfister

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Oral history projects about rhetorical studies contribute to transdisciplinary histories by creating living texts that reflect the dynamism of scholarly cultures. Through interviews conducted at the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology (ARST), we chart the organizational and intellectual history of a field, its contributions to science studies, and its potential future directions. These digitized, archived oral histories serve as an articulation point for transdisciplinary reflection, but they also represent an important strand of digital humanities work that creates living texts and keeps them open for future articulations.

Society And Style: Prints From The Sheldon Museum Of Art, Alison G. Stewart, Paul Royster

Zea E-Books Collection

This collection of works explores how Societies and Styles changed over the course of Early Modern Europe (1500-1800) from the time of the advent of printing on paper to the Industrial Revolution and beyond through little-seen printed masterpieces from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s collection. Today, “print” continues to endure even as new forms of digital publications transform our world in previously unimaginable ways, just as printing did centuries ago.

This exhibition offers a view into the ways printed works of art on paper (mostly woodcuts, engravings, and etchings) showcase society and its various aspects, ranging from one Christian martyrdom …

Commgram: A New Visual Analytics Tool For Large Communication Trace Data, Jieting Wu, Jianping Zeng, Hongfeng Yu Jan 2014

Commgram: A New Visual Analytics Tool For Large Communication Trace Data, Jieting Wu, Jianping Zeng, Hongfeng Yu

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

The performance of massively parallel program is often impacted by the cost of communication across computing nodes. Analysis of communication patterns is critical for understanding and optimizing massively parallel programs. Visualization can help identify potential communication bottlenecks by displaying message trace data. However, the visual clutter and temporal incoherence problems are typically incurred in existing visualization tools for a considerable number of processors. In this paper, we present a new tool, named CommGram, which supports visual analysis of communication patterns for massive parallel MPI programs. With the benefit of MPI trace library DUMPI of SST, our framework builds hierarchical …

Visual Literacy (Grade 9–12): Art Today — Course Description And Outline, Kelli P. Dornbos Aug 2013

Visual Literacy (Grade 9–12): Art Today — Course Description And Outline, Kelli P. Dornbos

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Process is hugely contrasting among all artists around the world. Each artist has their own way of developing a way of thinking, seeing and making to reach their need to get something out (or in simpler terms, create art). In this middle school art class, students will explore the different mediums of art with strict guidelines of craft and technique but freedom in the subject of what they can create on their own. It is important for 6th grade students to cooperate with each other to solve problems and create an identity through their own art making process. Dewey explains …

The Roma And Wall Street/Ceos: Linguistic Construction Of Identity In U.S. And Canadian Crime Reports, Theresa Catalano

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Discriminatory practices against Roma (also known as Romanies) occur on a daily basis in many countries around the world through media discourse. This paper investigates the representation of Romanies in U.S. and Canadian online newspaper crime reports and compares this representation to Wall Street/CEOs in crime reports demonstrating how identity of both groups is constructed through a variety of linguistic and non-linguistic strategies. Drawing on Mayr and Machin’s (2012) critical linguistic analysis of the language of crime, this multimodal study incorporates a variety of tools such as Critical Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Linguistics in order to dig below the surface …

Addressing Implicit Bias In The Courts, Pamela M. Casey, Roger K. Warren, Fred L. Cheesman, Jennifer K. Elek

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Fairness is a fundamental tenet of American courts. Yet, despite substantial work by state courts to address issues of racial and ethnic fairness,2 public skepticism that racial and ethnic minorities receive consistently fair and equal treatment in American courts remains widespread.3 Why?

THE INFLUENCE OF IMPLICIT ASSOCIATIONS

Perhaps one explanation may be found in an emerging body of research on implicit cognition. During the last two decades, new assessment methods and technologies in the fields of social science and neuroscience have advanced research on brain functions, providing a glimpse into what National Public Radio science correspondent Shankar Vedantam refers to …

The Birth Of Mass Media: Printmaking In Early Modern Europe, Alison Stewart Jan 2013

The Birth Of Mass Media: Printmaking In Early Modern Europe, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

In the digital age, when images and films can be streamed with lightning speed onto computers at the press of a button, it is hard to fathom the society-altering impact the new printed image had when it first appeared in Europe around 1400. The introduction of printed images or repeatable pictorial statements irrevocably changed the practice of manually producing images one by one, by making them available in identical form, as multiple examples printed onto paper, a material that was newly available in Europe. Such multiples appeared first as independent images, then as book illustrations, but either way, this process …

One Approach To Marketing Rural Communities, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel Jan 2013

One Approach To Marketing Rural Communities, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

Declining rural populations have been making the news for decades. There is little doubt that the trend line of the most rural counties on the Great Plains has been down. But just because some rural areas are declining does not mean that all areas are declining, or are destined to decline. In fact, some rural areas are realizing that the quality of life they provide can be marketed and is an important factor for families looking to relocate from urban areas (Cantrell et al., 2008).

A Survey Of Energy-Efficient Compression And Communication Techniques For Multimedia In Resource Constrained Systems, Tao Ma, Michael Hempel, Dongming Peng, Hamid Sharif

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Advances in wireless multimedia communication technologies enable new types of pervasive and ubiquitous applications such as mobile health care, environmental monitoring, facility monitoring and traffic surveillance. Among different factors concerned, energy efficiency is one of the most challenging issues in multimedia communication due to the resource constraints, and the requirements for high bandwidth and low transmission delay. In this survey, we provide a broad picture of the state of- the-art energy efficient techniques that have been proposed in wireless multimedia communication for resource-constrained systems such as wireless sensor networks and mobile devices.

Following the essential stages required for multimedia communication, …

Uncut: The Materiality Of Textiles And The Politics Of Sustainment In Fashionable Clothing, Hazel Clark Sep 2012

Uncut: The Materiality Of Textiles And The Politics Of Sustainment In Fashionable Clothing, Hazel Clark

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Uncut: The materiality of textiles and the politics of sustainment in fashionable clothing In the contemporary world, where visual communication gains greater authority, human beings are becoming more detached from the materiality of their clothing. Fashionable garments in particular are promoted, sold and bought on how they look, not what they are made of. Arguably this encourages the excessive waste that surrounds fashion, where clothes become relegated to the status of mere perishables. In production, similarly, an estimated 15% of the fabric used to create a piece of clothing ends up in a landfill. This paper examines this situation conceptually …

The Effectiveness Of Distance Delivery Studios In Interior Design Education, Tracy A. Fichera Aug 2012

The Effectiveness Of Distance Delivery Studios In Interior Design Education, Tracy A. Fichera

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

Technology has affected the way in which we live and work and many Interior Design programs have transitioned at least a portion of their curriculum to an online format; however, for many reasons most have been hesitant to convert the studio. One concern many faculty have is that distance education cannot facilitate the same environment or provide the individualized attention that face-to-face studio offers. In this study, the effectiveness of distance delivery studio courses in interior design education will be explored to find out if they can be as successful as face-to-face studio courses. Standards set forth by the Council …

Digital Morphogenesis: A Computational Housing Typology, Bryce R. Willis May 2012

Digital Morphogenesis: A Computational Housing Typology, Bryce R. Willis

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Architects have integrated computers into firms to streamline the documentation process and which has allowed for the integration of rapid prototyping and digitally driven technologies and tools. Although this has increased the efficiency of the traditional approach to architecture, an alternative methodology has the potential to adapt the computer’s role in architecture, making it a more integrated part of the design process. Within a traditional process, software allows a designer to build the documentation of his designs around the relationships between elements. Instead, new methodologies can be used to imbed the nature of an architectural design within a system of …

Designing Resilience To The Potential Failure Of An Oil-Dependent System, Michelle A. Morehead May 2012

Designing Resilience To The Potential Failure Of An Oil-Dependent System, Michelle A. Morehead

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

American, post--World War II suburbia exists in a unique form different from previous development in the U.S. and the rest of the world. While suburbs in European countries are typically defined as outlying areas within a city’s limits, American suburbs have no legal definition, and are frequently within a metropolitan area, but outside of the main city’s limits. Suburbs are independent in land-use, taxing and regulatory powers, and therefore may have separate governing bodies and interests than the city they have proximity to. With post-war wealth, credit, and mass production of the automobile, Americans in the 50s were able to …

Design Capitalism, Emily Van Court May 2012

Design Capitalism, Emily Van Court

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Social business examples are few in the architecture profession. In fact, humanitarian architecture as a concept is new to the field. Left to non-profits and academics (Architecture for Humanity and Rural Studio respectively), humanitarian architecture is not traditionally regarded as a profitable business.

However, other fields have found ways to combine a social initiative and a profitable business. Grameen Bank founder Dr. Muhammad Yunus not only defined the term, but created the model for social business. Subsequently, many non-profits have followed suit and applied the successful system, increasing the capacity for social change within their fields.

My thesis will aim …

Zea E-Books Collection

In the digital age, when videos are streamed and books can be read electronically, it is hard to fathom the revolutionary impact that printed images had when they first appeared in Europe around 1400. Their introduction changed forever the traditional practice of manually crafting images one by one, creating a world in which pictures could be reproduced almost without limit on a new material called paper, expanding the possibilities and audiences for images and texts of all kinds. This publication, which brings to light little-seen masterpieces from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s collection, explores the three major print techniques of …

Affecting Risk: Improving Hazard Communication In The Wildland-Urban Interface, Melissa Wright Dr., Destiny Aman Jan 2012

Affecting Risk: Improving Hazard Communication In The Wildland-Urban Interface, Melissa Wright Dr., Destiny Aman

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

Wildfire hazard is a growing problem in many areas of the United States, especially in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), where homes and other structures border or intermingle with forests, shrubs and grasslands. Despite years of educational outreach by fire management officials promoting effective and affordable mitigation strategies, research shows that residents, especially seasonal residents and those new to an area, still tend to under-invest in mitigation, even when they perceive their risk to be high. Meanwhile, the social and economic costs of wildfire have increased with fire size and intensity and far exceed the costs of mitigation. This problem has …
