Biofeedback Via Telehealth: A New Frontier For Applied Psychophysiology, Raymond A. Folen, Larry C. James, Jay E. Earles, Frank Andrasik

United States Army: Publications

Psychophysiological diagnostic and therapeutic methods, to include biofeedback, have been found to be empirically effective in the treatment of a variety of physical disorders. In many areas of the country, however, certified biofeedback practitioners are not well distributed, limiting patient access to this treatment modality. Psychologists at Tripler Army Medical Center have pioneered efforts to develop and provide these needed services via a telehealth venue. Such capability significantly improves access to care, particularly for patient’s located at considerable distance from the provider. As the telecommunications infrastructure in rural and remote areas is often quite basic, such a system must be …

Painting And Being: A Meditation On Perception, Myron N. Moore Jan 1998

Painting And Being: A Meditation On Perception, Myron N. Moore

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

The art of painting, as I practice it, is analogous to reevaluating tradition: the purpose being not to determine what is new but to determine anew what is truly relevant. The history of art affects my perception and that which I see celebrates what I find relevant to the present. I have always worked from direct observation. In an art climate that has moved toward conceptual concerns, my response is to explore the perceptual paradigm of western art, without invalidating its tradition. My paintings are a direct response to my environment. In making such work I communicate the significance of …

Application Of Inversions To Lossless Image Compression, Ziya Arnavut Nov 1996

Application Of Inversions To Lossless Image Compression, Ziya Arnavut

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Linear prediction schemes, such as that of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), are simple and normally produces a residual sequence with lower zero-order entropy. Occasionally the entropy of the prediction error becomes greater than that of the original image. Such situations frequently occur when the image data have discrete gray levels located within certain intervals. To alleviate this problem, various authors have suggested different preprocessing methods. However, the techniques reported require two passes. We extend the definition of Lehmer-type inversions (Lehmer 1960 and 1964) from permutations to multiset permutations and present a one-pass algorithm based on inversions of a …

The Traditional Method Of Masi Making On The Island Of Taveuni, Fiji, Daniel Roy Hildenbrandt Jan 1996

The Traditional Method Of Masi Making On The Island Of Taveuni, Fiji, Daniel Roy Hildenbrandt

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Masi or tapa is a traditional material which is made by the inhabitants of many of the islands in the Pacific region. This material is made from the bark of the young mulberry tree, which is soaked in water, beaten with mallets and formed into sheets. Mter drying, the Masi is decorated with traditional designs created by stencils, patterns and/or free-hand drawing. This documentary shows the process of Masi making as it is practiced on the "Garden Island" of Taveuni, Fiji. Each step is identified and explained in an English translation. The masi is made by the women of the …

Ancient Andean Headgear: Medium And Measure Of Cultural Identity, Niki R. Clark, Amy Oakland Rodman Jan 1994

Ancient Andean Headgear: Medium And Measure Of Cultural Identity, Niki R. Clark, Amy Oakland Rodman

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

From the earliest recorded periods of southern Andean history, distinctive clothing styles have served to identity specific socio-cultural groups and provide clues about cultural origins. Unique environmental conditions, especially present along the arid Pacific coast of South America, have allowed the preservation of a vast archive of usually perishable material. From the far south coast of Peru to the northern desert regions of Chile, textiles, and especially headgear forms were worn to distinguish between the diverse populations who established permanent settlements along the narrow river valleys linking highland regions and the coast.

The south central Andes region has always known …

Bukhara: Traditional Weavings From Pre-Soviet Central Asia, Carol Bier Jan 1992

Bukhara: Traditional Weavings From Pre-Soviet Central Asia, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

In southern regions of what was the Soviet Union lie five independent republics, the populations of which are predominantly Turkic: Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. During the course of the past fifty years, each of these areas has seen increasing industrialization as part of the centralized planning of the Soviet economy. Today, throughout the region. privatization of industry is rapidly occuring. Accompanying these new developments, and as part of the political and economic changes of the last few years, there has been an increasing awareness of ethnic identity and cultural inheritance. This may be expressed through literary and intellectual …

A Kurdish Reed Screen, Carol Bier Jan 1992

A Kurdish Reed Screen, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

A unique ethnographic monument recently donated to The Textile Museum merits special attention not only for its size (twenty-five feet long and four feet high), but for its important place in the history, use, construction, and decoration of functional textiles.

Designed to enclose space in a nomadic environment. the reed screen may be considered an architectural textile destined for use within the community in which it was made. This distinguishes it from commercial products manufactured for the market, and, indeed, from most other utilitarian textiles, although it shares with carpets and kilims an obvious intent to beautify the environment for …

Small Groups In Large Classes, Wendy Holmes Jan 1985

Small Groups In Large Classes, Wendy Holmes

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The fact that "mass lecture" is almost synonymous with "mass class" in academic circles suggests that the only thing an instructor can do with large classes is talk to (or at) them. After some desultory attempts at general discussions, question and answer sessions, and optional discussions for interested students, that is exactly what I settled into in "Introduction to Art," a class in art appreciation which I teach to roughly two hundred students every semester. I clarified and refined my lectures. I distributed mimeographed sheets bearing artists' names and dates and the main points of each lecture. I showed slides …

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill Jan 1984

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Visual studies in the social sciences have recently begun to enjoy increased popularity. Like the interdisciplinary excitement which earlier linked. the behavioral and social sciences to problems in environmental design, this event points to yet greater potential for collaboration between the social sciences, on the one hand, and the design disciplines, on the other. Whereas the interdisciplinary environmental design movement tended to focus specifically on the relationship between humans and the built urban environment (although some landscape architects properly extended their investigations to rural and natural environments), the intersection of visual sociology and the sociology of the visual arts encompasses …

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Feb 1983

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.

The Behavior And Ecology Of Herotilapia Multispinosa (Teleostei, Cichlidae), Jeffrey R. Baylis Jan 1976

The Behavior And Ecology Of Herotilapia Multispinosa (Teleostei, Cichlidae), Jeffrey R. Baylis

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

Because of their complex social behavior and the ease with which they can be manipulated, cichlid fishes have long been of special interest to the ethologist. However, most of the research into cichlid behavior has been on Old World species. The social behavior of New World species is different and deserves more study. This paper will describe the ethology of one of the Central American cichlids, Herotilapia multispinosa.

Pc 315/1-1-63, Characteristics Of U.S. Vessels, Vehicles, And Equipment For Amphibious Operations, September 1963, Defense Intelligence Agency Production Center, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

The cover and the forward claim that PC 315/1-1-63 is a publication of the, then new, intelligence Production Center of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

This appears to be an excellent technical-intelligence type document about American weapons and equipment. It could just as easily be a product of Soviet military intelligence. It contains descriptions and illustrations about various categories of landing craft and equipment. The categories of material covered include:

  • Landing Craft
  • Landing Ships
  • Amphibious Vehicles
  • Support Ships (including command ships and fire support ships) and
  • Auxiliary equipment

The appendices contain information about:

  • The capacities of various types of craft
  • Comparisons …

Field Manual, Fm 11-30, Signal Corps Technical Intelligence, August 1956, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

This is a very thorough manual which can be viewed as a detailed definition of Signal Corps technical intelligence and of the role of the Signal Corps Intelligence Agency (SCIA). When this was published the field of Signal Corps technical intelligence was about 15 years old and the SCIA was about six years old.

The modern US Army vision of the technical intelligence developed during World War II. Shortly before World War II, Army Technical Services had been instructed to set up intelligence sections in the office of their chiefs. The technical services were bureaus which supplied weapons, equipment, and …

Fm 11-35, Signal Corps Intelligence, 1942, Robert Bolin

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

This manual describes the intelligence activities of the Signal Corps. At that time, the Signal Corps was a bureau within the Headquarters, Department of the Army, as well as a branch of the Army to which soldiers were commissioned and assigned. The Signal Corps developed and supplied the army with signal and photographic equipment, trained personnel and units for service with the forces in the field, provided the army with communications and photographic services, and provided communications, signal, and technical intelligence. This manual describes the intelligence responsibilities and functions of the Signal Corps and the role of signal intelligence units …

Fm 11-20. Signal Corps Field Manual: Organization And Operations In Corps, Army Theater Of Operations, And Ghq, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Army: Field Manuals

This manual is a plan for organizing Signal Corps services within the continental US and in theatres of operation. This manual was issued shortly before the US entered World War II. I imagine that the actual organization of Signal Corps services during the war was considerably different from what was shown in this manual. One humorous feature of this manual is the attention given to the “Pigeon Company.”
