The Hesburgh Certificate And Portland State University's Faculty Development Approach To Supporting Service Learning And Community–University Partnerships, Kevin Kecskes, Amy Spring, Devorah Lieberman

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Service learning now has a prominent home in hundreds of diverse campuses across the nation. Developing service-learning expertise and other community-campus partnership enhancement strategies for faculty requires innovation. Recently, Portland State University’s Center for Academic Excellence received the Theodore M. Hesburgh Certificate of Excellence for Community-University Partnerships. This chapter outlines the center’s three-tiered approach to supporting and sustaining civic engagement practices that are sensitive to individual needs on campus and in the community, while also working toward ongoing departmental and institutional transformation.

Action Education In Land Use Decisions: Student Views On Urbanization And Farmland Loss, Mindi Schneider, Charles A. Francis, Dick Esseks

CARI Extension and Education Materials for Sustainable Agriculture

Loss of prime farmland is a serious concern in the United States and around the globe. With rapid urban population increases, the activities and perceived needs of concentrated groups of people result in the swallowing of some of the most fertile lands in this country. Today we have just under 2 acres of productive farmland per person in the United States. Given the current population growth rate due to births and immigration, plus the present rate of farmland loss, World Watch Institute estimates that we will have about 0.6 acres or one-third as much farmland available per person by 2055--a …

Review Of Communities, Development And Sustainability Across Canada Edited By John T. Pierce And Ann Dale, Neil Gilson Oct 2001

Review Of Communities, Development And Sustainability Across Canada Edited By John T. Pierce And Ann Dale, Neil Gilson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Communities, Development and Sustainability Across Canada is intended to serve as a synthesis of work on how Canadian communities can achieve sustainable development. Twelve essays by different authors discuss diverse theoretical and analytical perspectives and promote a variety of actions related to implementing sustainable development at the community level. The editors' introduction promises that the book will "highlight the importance of community as a critical link in achieving sustainable development." To this end, contributors were instructed to provide readers with both "retrospective and prospective analyses" and to make concrete proposals for action. Individual authors responded by producing work that consistently …

Family Farms Not The Key To Small Town Sustainability, Lisa Darlington Apr 2001

Family Farms Not The Key To Small Town Sustainability, Lisa Darlington

Business in Nebraska

Many rural communities in Nebraska have been losing population and their importance as trade centers for decades. At the same time, the number of family farms has been decreasing, resulting in larger operations run by fewer people. A common assumption is that the decline of small towns in the state, as evidenced by declining population and retail activity, is directly linked to the consolidation of small family farms into larger farms. Conversely, therefore, it is assumed that promoting stability of small farms and even promoting the growth in the number of small farms will lead to a revival of rural …

Empathy And The Questioning Spirit In Liberal Education: Reports From The Field, Sara Varhus Apr 2000

Empathy And The Questioning Spirit In Liberal Education: Reports From The Field, Sara Varhus

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Current justifications of liberal education usually take one of two tacks: itemizing the applicable skills that students derive from a liberal education, or asserting that it is liberal education that society must look to for the capacity for community or citizenship. The former is an argument probably worth making because it appeals to the preoccupations of students, parents, and employers, but it is the second that reveals the relevance, for our time, of liberal education. Bruce Kimball argues that this latter focus on the virtues instilled by education de-emphasizes rational inquiry and the individual pursuit of truth in what he …

A Report On Priorities For The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, As Identified By Stakeholders At A November 11, 1998, Symposium, Richard K. Perrin

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

During 1998 the NN21 Food Systems in 2020 Action Team at the University of Nebraska sponsored two symposiums to stimulate thinking and discussion about the nature of the food system that will evolve by the year 2020, and the potential role of the University of Nebraska in shaping that system and educating people to participate effectively in it. The first symposium, "The Food System for 2020: Nebraska's Opportunities", was held on January 14, with approximately 185 in attendance. The program (attached as Appendix 1) was intended to bring to bear some of the best thinking in the country about how …

Urbanization Of Rural Landscapes Syllabus And Teaching Materials From A University Course, Richard Olson

CARI Extension and Education Materials for Sustainable Agriculture

An introduction of the students to the structure and expectations of the course, the learning objectives, and the evaluation procedures for determining grades. Through a lecture/slide presentation. the students are introduced to the concept of the landscape as the key level in the spatial hierarchy for evaluating the effects of land use decisions. The relationship between landscape structure and landscape function is explored. A gallery walk exercise promotes interaction among the students as they draw on their own knowledge to determine the factors at each level of the spatial hierarchy that are most important in influencing land use decisions. Readings …

The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana In Closed Microalgal-Based Microcosms (Biospheres), Rachel L. Yung, Mark A. Gouthro, James R. Rosowski

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of three experimental variables on the stability and fecundity of a brine-shrimp community in a closed, micro algal-based microcosm. Xenic microalgal cultures and brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana Kellogg) in 300-cc acrylic spheres (referred to as biospheres or microcosms) were subjected to three experimental variables: (1) the culture volume (150 ml or 250 ml), (2) presence or absence of daily culture mixing (sphere rotation), and (3) a microcosm atmosphere that was either closed or open to the surrounding atmosphere. Each sphere started with 200 brine shrimp cysts and the microalga …

Nn21 Food Systems Inventory, Nebraska Network 21

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

This questionnaire serves a guideline for gathering information that will produce a community inventory. First, you are asked to define your area of study, how many people live there and how many people are directly involved in food related activities. Then you are asked to gather information about the food system in your area. Important: please keep a record of your sources of information. This questionnaire is organized according to five components of the food system: production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste management. Some of the information in each part relates to information in the other parts. The food that …

Strategies For Sustainable Economic Development, Duane Olsen Aug 1998

Strategies For Sustainable Economic Development, Duane Olsen

Cornhusker Economics

During a conference highlighting "sustainable Communities," Margaret Thomas presented a paper based upon a 1994 research project designed to explore economic development strategies that would increase local prosperity and also protect the environment and protect natural resources. She described the economy and ecology as two sides of the same coin and proposed reconsidering human systems and industrial systems in the light of these two natural laws: 1) resources are to be used no faster than they are replenished, and 2) matter is ultimately recycled for reuse in biological or physical systems.

Tenth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Feb 1992

Tenth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Tenth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop (GPWDCW) was held 15-18 April 1991 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The goal was to provide a forum for individuals involved in wildlife damage management to discuss new ideas and recent advances in ecology, technology, public education, and policy. The format allowed for interaction and exchange on current issues, damage control techniques, priority areas for research, public education, and extension activities. The GPWDCW is one of three national conferences (including the Vertebrate Pest Conference and the Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference) that deal specifically with wildlife damage management.

More than 250 people from 22 …
