Political Organization Of The Plains Indians, With Special Reference To The Council, Maurice Greer Smith Apr 1925

Political Organization Of The Plains Indians, With Special Reference To The Council, Maurice Greer Smith

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Next to sociological field work, ... there are within this branch of study no other investigations so urgently needed as monographs on some definite class of social phenomena or institutions among a certain group of related tribes. A comparative treatment of some social institution as it exists throughout the uncivilized races of the world undoubtedly has value .... But at the same time a comparative study suffers from defects which seem wellnigh inseparable from the prosecution of so great a task. A social institution is not an isolated phenomenon, but is closely connected with a variety of facts. It is …

Canning Club Demonstration - Building A Team Demonstration For Greens : Extension Circular 9-38-2, Jessie Greene

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

This 4-H circular discusses the creation of a demonstration. A demonstration is simply showing someone how to do a piece of work. When one person shows and explains how to do some part of a club problem we call it an individual demonstration. When two or more people work together showing and explaining some problem it is a team demonstration. It is best to begin the demonstrational work at the first regular meeting and have some phase of it at each meeting. At first it may seem hard to demonstrate but with practice it becomes easier and is enjoyed by …

Chapter Six: The Crowning Years, Robert Crawford Jan 1925

Chapter Six: The Crowning Years, Robert Crawford

These Fifty Years: A History of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska

THE years from about 1909 to 1923 were the crowning years in the history of the College of Agriculture. Could Professor Thompson, the first professor of agriculture, and those early residents of the state! who wagged their heads at agricultural education have stepped into the farm campus in 1923, Professor Thompson would have found his most sanguine dreams more than realized, while those who scoffed perhaps would have remained to learn. They would have found nine great buildings devoted exclusively to experimentation and instruction, among them the finest agricultural engineering building in the world, a dairy building famous thruout the …

Xx. The Term "Communal", Louise Pound Jun 1924

Xx. The Term "Communal", Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

I. The Doctrine of Communal Origins

The period following the French Revolution was deeply interested in "the people" as a mass conception, in all that belonged to them and all that they created. It was in this period that theorists on the origin of law, customs, religion, language, literature--particularly the folk-song and the folk-tale--liked to advocate the doctrine of spontaneous, unconscious growth "from the heart of the people," as the phrase went. Such conceptions of origin had their critics from the first; but they remained more or less orthodox throughout the nineteenth century, and they still have foothold in both …

The Spirit Of The Common Law, Roscoe Pound Aug 1921

The Spirit Of The Common Law, Roscoe Pound

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

These lectures speak in large part from the second decade of the present [20th] century; and they show the faith in the efficacy of effort and belief that the administration of justice may be improved by conscious intelligent action which characterized that time. The recrudescence of juristic pessimism in the past three years has not led me to abandon that point of view. At the end of the nineteenth century lawyers thought attempt at conscious improvement was futile. Now many of them think it is dangerous. In the same way the complacent nothing-needs-to-be-done attitude of Blackstone, who in the spirit …

A Provisional List Of Nebraska Authors, Sophia J. Lammers

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This list of Nebraska authors has been prepared to answer the many demands for such information that have come to this library. The frequency with which this reference inquiry appears, not only in our library but elsewhere, is shown from the fact that manuscript lists of Nebraska authors have been compiled in the Lincoln City Library, the State Library, the Library Commission, the State Historical Society, and the Legislative Reference Bureau. This material has been placed freely at the disposal of the compiler of the present list. Many individuals have also been consulted and have contributed information of value. The …

Sociology And The Law, Arthur W. Spencer Jan 1915

Sociology And The Law, Arthur W. Spencer

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

A significant recent development in the field of legal science in this country, the importance of which is not yet generally recognized by laymen, is the noteworthy awakening of interest in the philosophical literature of the continent of Europe dealing with legal institutions. Progress in this field of legal philosophy has been especially rapid since the late seventies, particularly in Germany. In English-speaking countries no phenomena of equal significance have occurred. America has never produced any notable philosophical jurists; and the work of English legal scholars of the past generation, though in some instances it has been brilliant and of …

Literature And The New Anti-Intellectualism, Philo M. Buck, Jr. Jan 1914

Literature And The New Anti-Intellectualism, Philo M. Buck, Jr.

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

" Never has he drawn so deeply from the well that is the human heart; never so near those invisible heights which are the soul." The reviewer who wrote this sentence probably meant that the author of the book he so enthusiastically welcomed wrote with a little more than the ordinary insight. Indeed if we are to judge from the encomiums in our less critical reviews the world has never been so blessed with novels and plays which touch the secret springs of the heart. The old fiction had generalised, had conventionalised, much as the old art had done. This, …

Puero Reverentia, Philo M. Buck, Jr. Jan 1914

Puero Reverentia, Philo M. Buck, Jr.

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

"The kindergarten is no longer an experiment. Critics may say what they will about its being a waste of time, an opportunity to play under unnatural conditions; they may assert that the work done by the child there is purposeless, that the child is too old when he enters; in short, they may empty every chamber of their wrath; yet the fact still stands that children who have gone through the kindergarten in the normal way are better and stronger physically, mentally, and morally when they enter the grades than those who have had no such training. This has been …

Literature And Criticism, P. H. Frye Jan 1914

Literature And Criticism, P. H. Frye

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

In these days of "scientific method," when there is so little literary activity of a genuinely critical sort, it is a good deal easier to say in what such activity does not, than in what it does, consist. That literary criticism is not identical with a study of words or language, or yet of texts or "documents"; that it is not to be confounded with philology or with the exploration of origins or derivations, or the investigation of manuscripts, or a determination of the details of literary history-all this ought. to be reasonably clear on the face of it, and …

The Literary Interregnum, Louise Pound Oct 1913

The Literary Interregnum, Louise Pound

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

In a Phi Beta Kappa address given last year before certain university audiences of the middle west, the head of the Columbia School of Journalism, Dr. Talcott Williams, made something of a text of the dearth of contemporary literary activity of the highest order. His reference was chiefl y to poetry, but he seemed to feel that there is now relative sterility nearly everywhere in the literary field. Th e period seemed to him not perhaps so much an interregnum, for that holds promise of succession to vacant thrones, as a period of decline; and this decline he felt to …

Magnacum Confusione, Philo M. Buck, Jr. Jan 1913

Magnacum Confusione, Philo M. Buck, Jr.

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

"--And I carried away from college a suit case of clothes and a packing case of notebooks. These were all I had left after paying my commencement bills, for the notebooks had no commercial value, nor any other, so far as my use of them has shown, as I have never looked in them since. And isn't that a fair allegory of your college education?"

Jones was speaking, a little bitterly for him, for usually he was the most sunny of high-school principals. We had been exchanging reminiscences during the last courses of an excellent luncheon served by a domestic …

The Intrusions Of Science, S. B. Gass Jan 1913

The Intrusions Of Science, S. B. Gass

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

It is not infrequently related that human arrogance was sadly but not unjustly rebuked by Darwin and the evolutionary science of the Nineteenth Century. And indeed from the point of view of pure science there was arrogance in an assumption that the enveloping intelligence of the universe looked upon mankind as its terminus ad quem to which all parts were subordinate--in an assumption that men were made in the likeness of an over-ruling power that worked by ways which, paradoxically, even that likeness was fain to call mysterious and incomprehensible. Science seemed to make these ways less mysterious, less incomprehensible; …

Some Of The Next Steps In Botanical Science, Charles E. Bessey Jan 1913

Some Of The Next Steps In Botanical Science, Charles E. Bessey

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

When one who has worked long in any

field of science speaks before an audience

such as this he is expected to say something

about the condition of his branch of science

when he began work with meager and

poorly adapted apparatus, to contrast it

with its greatly improved condition to-day,

and to dwell with pride upon the finely

equipped laboratories with costly apparatus

especially designed for particular

experiments, to be found by the twentieth

century scientific student. And 1 must

confess that the temptation to do so was

one difficult to resist, for we who have

grown old in …

Mont-Saint-Michel And Chartres, Henry Adams, Ralph Adams Cram Jan 1904

Mont-Saint-Michel And Chartres, Henry Adams, Ralph Adams Cram

Electronic Texts in American Studies

FROM the moment when, through the courtesy of my friend Barrett Wendell, I came first to know Mr. Henry Adams's book, MontSaint- Michel and Chartres, I was profoundly convinced that this privately printed, jealously guarded volume should be withdrawn from its hiding-place amongst the bibliographical treasures of collectors and amateurs and given that wide publicity demanded alike by its intrinsic nature and the cause it could so admirably serve. To say that the book was a revelation is inadequately to express a fact; at once all the theology, philosophy, and mysticism, the politics, sociology, and economics, the romance, literature, and …
