The Huff Site A Reconstruction Of Past Lifeways, Emery Ladean Mehrer
The Huff Site A Reconstruction Of Past Lifeways, Emery Ladean Mehrer
Nebraska Anthropologist
The purpose of this paper is to construct, from available literature, the possible social structure of the inhabitants of the Huff Site (32MO11). Although archeology is termed as the study of the human past, with its objectives being construction of cultural chronology, reconstruction of past lifeways, and discovery of processes that underlie and condition human behavior, I feel that many times these objectives are either overlooked or only in part covered. This paper will serve as an example of possible inferences which can be made from archeological and historical data. Some inferences or hypotheses which are made in this paper …
Nebraska Trapping, George Schildman, Frank Andelt, Jim Brunner
Nebraska Trapping, George Schildman, Frank Andelt, Jim Brunner
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
Fur bearers and trapping played an important role in the exploration and development of Nebraska. The harvest of our fur-bearer resource is part of every Nebraskan's heritage. Wise use of the resource and consideration for other people's property and personal rights can insure that trapping will remain a part of the heritage of future generations. The purpose of this publication is to help insure this heritage ... through the educational process. Knowledge of and respect for the resource, as well as consideration for other people, are the keys to perpetuating trapping as an outdoor activity. While primarily designed to assist …
The Applicability Of Torgerson's Concept Of Fiat Measurement In Developmental Stages Of The Social Sciences, Christine V. Zavgren, S. J. Lambert
The Applicability Of Torgerson's Concept Of Fiat Measurement In Developmental Stages Of The Social Sciences, Christine V. Zavgren, S. J. Lambert
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The concept of "fiat measurement" is an alternative to fundamental and derived measurement. This concept is believed to be more descriptive of measurement in the social sciences, where in most cases theories as well-formed as those in the physical sciences do not exist. In fiat measurement an index or measurement of a concept is assumed to be representative of that concept. However, the representation between a measurement scale and the theoretical concept cannot be proven. Although fiat measurement is descriptive of much current work in social sciences, it is shown to be a problematic concept because of its arbitrariness, lack …
The Structures Of Scientific Relativism, Charles J. Dougherty
The Structures Of Scientific Relativism, Charles J. Dougherty
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Few recent works have generated as much intellectual discussion as Thomas S. Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Yet given the impact this book has had on our understanding of science-its role in the demise of logical positivism, in the current outpouring of interest in the history of science, and in changes in science education - perhaps it is time now, some ten years after Kuhn's provocative Postscript, for still another look at his thesis. That is the purpose of this study. First, those elements of Kuhn's book which committed him to a scientific relativism are reconstructed. Secondly, …
On Responsibility In Ethnography, Mary Jo Deegan
On Responsibility In Ethnography, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Ethnographers have a serious responsibility to the people they study, the audience they address, and their colleagues to be both discrete and insightful about the human condition. Accordingly I read Kotarba's article with deep regret and professional distress. It is theoretically confused, methodologically unsound, and ethically questionable. Justification of these assertions is presented in the following pages.

Political And Sociological Aspects Of Wildlife Damage Control, Walter E. Howard
Political And Sociological Aspects Of Wildlife Damage Control, Walter E. Howard
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
I greatly appreciate being invited to the 1979 Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control workshop - especially being your dinner speaker. The climate of public opinion developed from the ecology movement in the western world implies that everything chemical is unnatural and bad, while anything biological is intrinsically desirable. Vertebrate pest control faces a very emotional climate, thanks to government actions and many organizations seeking to profit fran keeping it that way. Unfortunately Americans have been indoctrinated to think that the present vertebrate pest control methodology is archaic and inhumane, that the field attracts those who are killers at heart, and …
Research And Teaching Needs In Wildlife Damage Control And Prevention, W. Alan Wentz
Research And Teaching Needs In Wildlife Damage Control And Prevention, W. Alan Wentz
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Wildlife damage control is a fairly unique part of wildlife management. But you will notice that I said it is a part of wildlife management. I believe that too many of today's wildlife managers, professors, and administrators look at this aspect of our profession as something different, something outside of management,... something to stay away from. Wildlife damage control is a part of wildlife management and it is, perhaps, one of the most basic aspects of our profession. In fact, I would guess that nearly every professional wildlife worker has at one time or another been involved in wildlife damage …

Attitudes Of Canadians Toward The Control Of Red-Winged Blackbirds, Robert G. Clark, Rodger D. Titman, J. Roger Bider
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Each year across Canada, millions of dollars of damage to agricultural crops can be attributed to vertebrate pests. Estimates for 1975 indicated that approximately $240,000,000 damage was incurred by agricultural pests (Solman et al. 1975). Worldwide impact of these pests must certainly be staggering, especially during the current trend of rising production costs and demand for food. In Canada and the United States, pest control programs may be attacked by increaseingly active and vocal environmental groups. Recently, the killing of blackbirds (Icteridae) and starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) in Kentucky and Tennessee evoked strong objection (Graham 1976, 1978; Jackson 1976). As a …

Some Trends In Forecast Skill At The National Severe Storms Forecast Center, Allen Pearson, Steven J. Weiss
Some Trends In Forecast Skill At The National Severe Storms Forecast Center, Allen Pearson, Steven J. Weiss
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Tornado watch and severe local storm outlook verification statistics reveal the trends in forecast skill at the National Severe Storms Forecast Center. The skill level of the outlook has been steadily increasing since 1973. The percentage of watches verifying has been gradually increasing since 1970. While the probability of detection for tornadoes has decreased slightly since 1974, this appears to be highly correlated with the number of outbreak tornadoes reported in a given year. During significant tornado days, a much higher degree of skill is exhibited for both outlooks and watches. Factors influencing the results are discussed, including the impact …
Impact Of Spacing Behavior And Predation On Population Growth In Meadow Voles, Dale M. Madison
Impact Of Spacing Behavior And Predation On Population Growth In Meadow Voles, Dale M. Madison
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Free-ranging, sexually mature meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) were tracked using radiotelemetry from June through August 1974, 1975 and 1978. Up to 20 voles were monitored concurrently to derive estimates of intraspecific spacing and natural predation in an effort to clarify processes involved in the limitation of population growth. The daily ranges of the males, as compared to those of the females, were larger, more variable in size, and changed location more from one day to the next. Adult females usually maintained territories free of other females; males overlapped considerably among themselves. Males temporarily moved into the areas occupied by estrous …

“Sociology At Nebraska: 1884-1929,” Together With “A History Of Sociology At The University Of Nebraska,” By J.O. Hertzler, Joyce O. Hertzler, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
At the turn of the century the University of Nebraska was one of the four leading centers of sociology in the United States. Despite this auspicious start, Nebraska has remained relatively obscure in the accounts of the history of Sociology. This is partially a result of its size: until 1959 the faculty consisted of only five members and was oriented to a small but quality graduate program. The document which follows is an original manuscript recording the early history of the department. It was written by Joyce O. Hertzler in the Winter of 1929. This rough draft, now yellowing and …
The Realizing Character Of The Social Sciences, Andrew Larkin
The Realizing Character Of The Social Sciences, Andrew Larkin
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Because of successful construction of theories in the mathematical, physical, and biological sciences, and because of their unchallenged technological usefulness, the philosophy of science has concentrated on the formal and epistemological aspects of sciences. However, the less formal social sciences have had a greater impact on society. This realizing character of the sciences, i.e., their influence on society through policy (in the case of the social sciences), has been inadequately studied. In this paper the normative character of the social sciences is seen from the perspective of realization. Norms as internal and external criteria, which are entailed by realization, are …
Humanities In Medical Education- The Past Ten Years, James J. Quinn
Humanities In Medical Education- The Past Ten Years, James J. Quinn
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
What has always fascinated me is an historical account that ends triumphantly but whose start-to-finish is riddled with reversals and hostile obstacles and haunted by anguishing circumstances. The history of "humanities in medical education- the past ten years" in the United States is just such a story. In the last ten years there has been a continually wider acceptance of humanities in United States medical schools, i.e., a growing number of schools introducing the humanities, a growth in the quality and scope of programs being offered, and a greater acceptance of the humanities as an integral part of the medical …
A System Model Of Shawnee Indian Migration, Jerry E. Clark
A System Model Of Shawnee Indian Migration, Jerry E. Clark
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Existing theories or "laws" of migration prove to be inadequate for understanding and explaining the widespread migration of the Shawnee Indians. By viewing Shawnee migration as a system, their movement from place to place can be understood in terms of cultural, historical, and environmental variables. Migration to and from Alabama and eastern Pennsylvania indicates how these variables operated to make a particular location favorable or unfavorable for the Shawnee.

The Autobiography Of W.E.B. Dubois: An Analysis, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The Autobiography of W.E.B. DuBois: A Soliloquy on Viewing My Life from the Last Decade of Its First Century tells the impressive and inspiring story of an individual’s struggles, defeats and accomplishments, as well as his major ideas developed during ninety years of a life dedicated to promoting racial equality and the sociological study of African- American realities in the United States. The Autobiography presents a view of American life distilled through the perceptive, analytical eyes of this country’s foremost African- American intellectual, William Edward Burghardt Dubois. Progressing from the reconstruction era at the end of the U.S. Civil …
The Reality Or Illusion Of A General Contingency Theory Of Management: A Response To The Longenecker And Pringle Critique, Fred Luthans, Todd I. Stewart
The Reality Or Illusion Of A General Contingency Theory Of Management: A Response To The Longenecker And Pringle Critique, Fred Luthans, Todd I. Stewart
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
In April 1977, we introduced the concept of a General Contingency Theory (GCT) of Management and proposed for its development a conceptual framework to integrate and synthesize diverse process, behavioral, and management science concepts and techniques (3). In their critique of GCT, Longenecker and Pringle (2) have argued that the concept of a contingency-based general theory of management is illusory, too ill-defined and nebulous to serve as a truly viable general theory. Our response is offered to clarify some of the points they raise and stimulate a continuing dialogue over the GCT construct which will hopefully contribute to the development …

The Influence Of Military Service On Political And Social Attitudes: A Study Of Socialization In The German Bundeswehr, Ekkehard Lippert, Paul Schneider, Ralf Zoll, Robert K. Shirer (Translated By)
German Language and Literature Papers
In recent years, one can observe a more intense interest on the part of the academic community and in the general public of the Federal Republic of Germany in questions concerning the Bundeswehr and about problems of the relationship between the military and society. One of the major reasons for the new scrutiny has been the drastic increase in the number of conscientious objectors to military service, occurring at the end of the 1960s. However, questions of the extensive defense- political aspects of the problem were less at the center of this interest than questions of educational and socialization processes …
