Trade In Hispanic Weavings Of Northern New Mexico And The Social Construction Of Tradition!, Suzanne Baizerman Jan 1990

Trade In Hispanic Weavings Of Northern New Mexico And The Social Construction Of Tradition!, Suzanne Baizerman

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

No discussion of late 20th century trade in textiles - particularly trade in what has been called "regional" or "ethnic" textiles - would be complete without a discussion of the terms "traditional" and "authentic" for these terms inform even a lay person's evaluation of textiles on the market today.

As textile professionals, we encounter terms like "textile tradition," "traditional textiles" or even "authentic traditional textiles" in our everyday experience: a textile brought back by a collector from travel to a Third World nation or a textile on display in a museum. These textiles are subjected to discussions of their authenticity, …

Toba Batak Textile Inventions, Sandra A. Niessen Jan 1990

Toba Batak Textile Inventions, Sandra A. Niessen

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

INTRODUCTION

This article focuses on fruits of looms worked by Toba Batak weavers in the Silindung Valley, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Silindung Valley weavings are characteristically bright and fashionable. They are described by the Batak themselves and by visitors from outside as the "least traditional" of Batak woven goods. They are also surging in popularity throughout all of Toba and increasingly making inroads into the market replacing the old-style textiles which are larger, of coarser yarn, and deeper/sober in colour. It is the modern style of Batak textile which today commands the highest prices locally. "Connoisseurs" of Indonesian textiles, however, usually …

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In April 1989, the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln sponsored its thirteenth annual symposium on the topic "The Hispanic Presence on the Great Plains." Scholars from across the United States and Mexico presented papers on a wide variety of topics covering the history, culture, politics, and images of people of Spanish origin on the Great Plains. These presentations focused on the Hispanic presence from the early Spanish explorers who entered the southern fringes of the Great Plains, to the vast migrations of Mexicans coming to "EI Norte" beginning in the early 1900s, to the creation …

Specifically, is psychopathy a condition which should relieve a criminal defendant of responsibility for his actions? Part II of this Comment describes the characteristics of psychopathy so the reader will have a better understanding of the type of individual in question. In addition, Part II presents the current psychiatric criteria for labeling an individual a psychopath. Part III of this Comment presents the prominent psychiatric view that psychopaths by virtue of their diagnosis should be exonerated from criminal liability. This view has …

Evaluating Honors Programs: An Outcomes Approach, Jacqueline Reihman, Sara Varhus, William R. Whipple

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

The evaluation of academic programs has always been a complex and sensitive issue. Evaluations are undertaken to determine which programs will survive in an era of straitened economic circumstances, to gain or maintain accreditation, or to tell us how our programs can be improved. They may apply some normative standard of quality, 0r address an academic program's unique situation and mission. They may include the following: review of budget, evaluation of staff, description of the program's operation, demonstration of faculty and student satisfaction, or measures of what students have learned. They may use standardized or locally developed tests of achievement; …

Bureaucracy, Institutional Change, And Deegan’S Theory Of Core Codes And Liberating Rituals, Michael R. Hill Jan 1990

Bureaucracy, Institutional Change, And Deegan’S Theory Of Core Codes And Liberating Rituals, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In American Ritual Dramas: Social Rules and Cultural Meanings (Greenwood Press, 1989), Mary Jo Deegan presents a theory of core codes and communitas that implicitly challenges the present organization of sociological practice in bureaucratic structures such as universities. The rituals of modern academic sociology are permeated by the same core codes that Deegan finds in many modern participatory and media-constructed rituals, specifically: the codes of oppression (class and sex codes) and the codes of repression (bureaucracy and time codes). Sociology remains little more than a rationalization for repressive and oppressive social control mechanisms unless it convincingly demonstrates and acts upon …

Excavating Underappreciated Sociologists: A Survey Of Assumptions And Strategies In Archival Research, Michael R. Hill Jan 1990

Excavating Underappreciated Sociologists: A Survey Of Assumptions And Strategies In Archival Research, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Archivally-based research in the history and sociology of sociology (especially the recent work of Mary Jo Deegan on Jane Addams and the Men of the Chicago School, 1892-1918) powerfully demonstrates the central epistemological importance of excavating and rehabilitating the contributions of sociologists who have long been ignored by historians of sociology. Archival experience reveals that uncovering the unknown, the unwritten, or the unrecognized in the history of sociology frequently requires reversing the conventional wisdoms of sociological research. Ten archival research strategies are identified. These approaches are best adapted to long-term rather than short-term research programs. It is concluded that. the …

Spindrift Gazes, Ronald Charles Kurtenbach Dec 1989

Spindrift Gazes, Ronald Charles Kurtenbach

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Spindrift Gazes is a collection of short stories that thematically relate to how human dignity is engendered and how that sense of dignity is challenged, undercut, and regained. These fictional constructions are particularly concerned with issues of transformation, how and why change takes place. Of particular emphasis is how differing kinds of human relationships are instrumental in the nature of those changes. Of fundamental concern is to give fictional form to human rights issues.

Survey Of Methodologies For Valuing Externalities And Public Goods, F. Gregory Hayden

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this report is to explain and evaluate six different methodologies for the valuation of externalities and public goods with respect to natural resources and the ecosystem. The six methodologies are: 1) general systems analysis, 2) the social fabric matrix, 3) direct cost, 4) contingent valuation, 5) travel cost, and 6) the property approach. The explanation and analysis contained in this report intends to determine their applicability to a broad definition of an ecosystem or socioecosystem.

School Transitions And Adjustment During Early Adolescence, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen, Julie A. Graber, John E. Schulenberg, Aaron Ebata

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The aim of this investigation was to determine the impact of the timing and number of school transitions on young adolescents’ subsequent adjustment. Three groups of adolescents (total N = 253) were compared: those making a single early school transition prior to sixth grade, those making a single later transition prior to seventh grade, and those making a double transition prior to both sixth and seventh grades. Adjustment was assessed in terms of course grades and self-image. Negative effects were found for both early and repeated school transitions, with the double transition being especially debilitating. In addition, effects were seen …

A Theory Of The Sociology Of Women, Helen A. Moore, Jane C. Ollenburger Jul 1989

A Theory Of The Sociology Of Women, Helen A. Moore, Jane C. Ollenburger

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Feminist theories present a number of options for organizing a model of inequality for women. At times, these present mutually exclusive concepts or definitions, or even causal factors. Patriarchal theories will not be used because they do not perceive women's oppression. Without an assumption of sex stratification and oppression, women's reality cannot be accurately described. Along with these patriarchal models, sex role socialization theories have been criticized for having (1) an emphasis on finding a singular universal truth and verification method, (2) a commitment to objectivity and observer neutrality, (3) dichotomous classification and primarily causal models, (4) ahistorical views, and …
