The Impact Of European Community's Humane Trapping Resolution On U.S. Wildlife Damage Control Program, Mahadev Bhat, Robert Gotie, Luther Keller Dec 1993

The Impact Of European Community's Humane Trapping Resolution On U.S. Wildlife Damage Control Program, Mahadev Bhat, Robert Gotie, Luther Keller

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

This paper discusses the implications that The European Economic Community's recent Wild Fur Regulation (WFR) might have on the U.S. wildlife damage control program. Beginning Jan. 1, 1995, the regulation will ban fur imports originating from countries which fail to (1) stop foothold trapping, and (2) adopt international humane trapping standards. Countries which pledge to adopt humane trapping standards will be granted a one-year extension to comply with the WFR. Because the European community is an important market for American furs, the regulation will affect the trapping of many American fur-bearing species, including raccoon, beaver, bobcat, muskrat, coyote, otter, badger, …

Urban Nuisance Wildlife Control In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barnes Dec 1993

Urban Nuisance Wildlife Control In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barnes

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

A variety of factors including increased urbanization, decreased funding for governmental animal damage programs, and increases in some urban wildlife populations have resulted in a greater demand for urban nuisance wildlife control. Historically, this demand was met by Cooperative Extension Service (San Julian 1987), state fish and wildlife agency, or USDA-APHIS-ADC employees (Bollengier 1987). These agencies provided educational materials, consultations, and/or physically removed animals. Recently, there is an increased demand for physical animal removal evidenced by increasing numbers of private pest control operators (PCO) specializing as urban nuisance wildlife control operators (NWCO).

The Meat Consumer Today - Promotion: What's New With The Consumer?, Pat Swan

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Promotion has been defined as "telling and selling" the customer. The overriding goal today, however, is understanding that customer. By determining consumers' needs and desires, one can then positively position products in a creative, relevant and positive way. The meat industry is constantly seeking to gauge both consumer attitudes and, importantly, their behaviors. Both are necessary components of a sound marketing plan.

Surgical Sterilization: An Underutilized Procedure For Evaluating The Merits Of Induced Sterility, James J. Kennelly, Kathryn A. Converse

Contraception in Wildlife Management

Despite more than 4 decades of effort, development of effective wildlife damage control programs based on sterilization of target species has met with limited success. This is partly due to the fact that investigators have assumed, rather than empirically tested, whether the reproductive strategies of the target populations were vulnerable to the planned treatment. Equally important, methods selected to induce sterility usually involve a chemical agent that can affect sociosexual behaviors of the nuisance population. In this report, we illustrate how surgically induced sterility circumvents both problems-how it enables one to assess the feasibility and applicability of the concept without …

A Survey Comparison Of Pest Control And Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barns

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 6th (1993)

A variety of factors including increased urbanization decreased funding for governmental animal damage programs, and increases in some urban wildlife populations have resulted in a greater demand for urban nuisance wildlife control. Historically, this demand was met by Cooperative Extension Service (San Julian 1987), state fish and wildlife agency, or federal wildlife damage control employees (Bollengier 1981) These agencies provided educational materials, consultations, an-or physically removed animals. Pregnancy Prevention In Early Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective, Lisa J. Crockett, Joanne S. Chopak Sep 1993

Pregnancy Prevention In Early Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective, Lisa J. Crockett, Joanne S. Chopak

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although there is widespread interest in preventing teenage pregnancy, few interventions have been directed toward young adolescents. In part this neglect is understandable because adolescents under age 15 account for only a small percentage of teenage pregnancies (Pittman & Adams, 1988). At the same time, the lack of attention to younger adolescents is unfortunate on several counts. First, an increasing number of young adolescents are at risk. Rates of sexual activity have been rising in this group (Hofferth, Kahn, & Baldwin, 1987) and, because young adolescents are typically not consistent or effective contraceptive users, an increasing number of girls are …

Review Of Never Too Thin, By Eva Szekely, And Anorexia And Bulimia: Anatomy Of A Social Epidemic, By Richard Gordon, Julia Mcquillan Sep 1993

Review Of Never Too Thin, By Eva Szekely, And Anorexia And Bulimia: Anatomy Of A Social Epidemic, By Richard Gordon, Julia Mcquillan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The two books reviewed seek more than a medical or a psychological understanding of the recent increase in eating disorders. Clinical psychologist Richard Gordon (1990) titles his work Anorexia and Bulimia: The Anatomy of a Social Epidemic and uses anthropologist George Devereux’s eating disorder concept as his primary analytic tool. In Never Too Thin, Eva Szekely, also a clinical psychologist, conveys a different understanding of the concept of social, which does not separate it from the concept of individual. She understands the individual and social as coconstituting each other through social relations embedded in individuals’ bodies and shaped by …

Allotment In Severalty On The Northern Ponca Reservation: The Geography Of Disposession, Oliver Raimund Froehling Aug 1993

Allotment In Severalty On The Northern Ponca Reservation: The Geography Of Disposession, Oliver Raimund Froehling

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In 1890 the Ponca Reservation in Knox and Boyd county was parcelled up and each individual Ponca received a plot of land as his or her own. The remaining 72,000 acres were opened for settlement under the Homestead Act. During the next few decades, most of the remaining Ponca lands held by individuals were sold to non-Indians. When the Ponca were allowed to acquire some tribal lands under the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act, the land base had already disintegrated. One effect of this disintegrating land base was the increased out-migration of tribal members which eventually led to termination of the …

Southern Alberta’S Cadillac Desert, Mary C. Thompson Aug 1993

Southern Alberta’S Cadillac Desert, Mary C. Thompson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Reisner (1986) coined the term "Cadillac Desert" to describe the high costs associated with irrigated agriculture in the American west. This concept can logically be extended to the northern-most reaches of the Great Plains in Canada to perform a critical analysis of irrigated agriculture in southern Alberta. Today irrigation technology, which arrived with the Mormon immigration of the 1880s, keeps over a million acres of former shortgrass prairie green. Costs of one of the world's largest snow melt irrigation systems are examined on several dimensions: the massive infusion of state funds necessary to build and maintain the system, environmental degradation …

The Value On An Interdisciplinary Environmental Awareness: An Introduction, J. Allen Williams Jr. Aug 1993

The Value On An Interdisciplinary Environmental Awareness: An Introduction, J. Allen Williams Jr.

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This special issue of Great Plains Research brings together important and innovative environmentally-related research being conducted in what might be considered an "ecoregion," the Great Plains. Investigators from seven different disciplines explore topics that span the Great Plains from the southern border of Texas to the Canadian prairie provinces of Alberta and Manitoba. Their methods vary from highly focused experimental designs to broad-based policy analysis.

A review of the research topics covered in this issue might suggest they are as varied as the geographic locations, disciplinary affiliations, and methodological approaches of the researchers. In one sense, they are, but the …

Early Adolescent Family Formation, Lisa J. Crockett Jun 1993

Early Adolescent Family Formation, Lisa J. Crockett

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In the United States, adolescent family formation has been considered a major social problem since the late 1970s. The sources of concern are multiple. First, teenage childbearing is associated with risks for the mother and her child, including health problems, reduced life chances, and a greater likelihood of living in poverty. Second, a large and increasing proportion of births to teenagers are nonmarital; this appears to compound these risks. Third, the rate of teenage childbearing in the United States far exceeds those in other Western, industrialized countries (Alan Guttmacher Institute, 1986). The high rate of adolescent pregnancy in the United …

A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Relationship Between Educational Investment And Adolescent Sexual Activity, Christine Mccauley Ohannessian, Lisa J. Crockett Apr 1993

A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Relationship Between Educational Investment And Adolescent Sexual Activity, Christine Mccauley Ohannessian, Lisa J. Crockett

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The relation between educational investment and sexual behavior was examined longitudinally in a sample of 479 rural adolescents. Surveys were administered to the subjects twice—once when they were in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grades, and again 2 years later when they were in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Results indicated that among girls, educational investment predicted sexual activity, with academic grades in school significantly predicting reported frequency of sexual activity 2 years later. In contrast for boys, sexual involvement predicted later educational investment, particularly involvement in academic activities. These findings suggest different developmental patterns for boys and girls. …

Recognizing Multiple Decision-Making Models: A Guide For Managers, Joan Giesecke Mar 1993

Recognizing Multiple Decision-Making Models: A Guide For Managers, Joan Giesecke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Empirical studies of decision making find that the process is more disorderly than described in rational models. New models have appeared that suggest that managers need to accommodate the randomness found in complex organizations. This article examines two approaches for dealing with this disorder: the political-bargaining model and the garbage can model. The essay clarifies the differences between these two approaches and assesses their usefulness to managers for understanding the decision-making process.

Order Matters, And Thus So Does Timing: Graphical Clocks And Process Synchronicity, F. Gregory Hayden Mar 1993

Order Matters, And Thus So Does Timing: Graphical Clocks And Process Synchronicity, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is, first, to review definitions of time; second, to discuss particular dimensions of time; and third, to relate those dimensions to graphical clocks. The value of such clocks for network analysis will be discussed.' The clocks for the integration of system networks will be computerized matrices and concomitant digraphs (graphical clocks). Such networks can be used to provide a standardized system clock to determine timeliness. This places events into a common system, which is timed by sequenced events. The coordination of broadly recurring sets of meaningful events characterizes synchronicity. Thus, timeliness is defined by system …

In Whose Backyard?: Concern About Sitting A Nuclear Waste Facility, Robert D. Benford, Helen A. Moore, J. Allen Williams Jr.

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Proponents of hazardous and nuclear waste depositories label opponents to local siting of such facilities "NIMBYs" (Not In My Backyard). This study assesses the extent to which the NIMBY label and the strategies of industry proponents to reduce opposition function on a reasonable set of assumptions. Using survey data and multiple regression techniques, the levels of concern of residents living in the county selected as the site of a low level radioactive wane disposal facility (imminent threat condition) are compared with a statewide sample (hypothetical threat condition). Consistent with proponents' theoretical assumptions, the levels of concern are greater for respondents …

4. Some Thoughts On Grading Systems And Grading Practices, James S. Terwilliger Jan 1993

4. Some Thoughts On Grading Systems And Grading Practices, James S. Terwilliger

Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills

INTRODUCTION

In his role as a discussant of a series of papers on educational evaluation 23 years ago, Scriven (1970) made the following comments:

While the papers this afternoon did not, on the above accoW1t, go far enough in the direction of basic evaluation, from another point of view they began at too abstract a level. They contain no discussion at all of the basic method of educational evaluation, one whose use quantitatively swamps any other. I refer to the practice of grading. Like so many other everyday practices, grading has often seemed too humble to merit the attention of …

Two Guys From Lincoln: Cameron Shaw And Craig Roper, Daphne A. Deeds Jan 1993

Two Guys From Lincoln: Cameron Shaw And Craig Roper, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Two Guys from Lincoln: Cameron Shaw and Craig Roper offers the work of two contemporary artists who are inheritors of the anti-art tradition that continued in the wake of Duchamp with Warhol's use of popular imagery and, more recently, Koons' controversial kitsch sculpture. Though distinct in their visions of art and the world, Shaw and Roper share more than their home town. As social and aesthetic contemporaries these two artists arrive at conclusions that suggest a generational commonality. Both artists use assemblage to address issues such as the disillusionment of youth, emblems of male dominance, the ambiguity of history, and …

Faculty Development's Role In Promoting An Inclusive Community: Addressing Sexual Orientation, Ann S. Ferren, William W. Geller

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Faculty development programs have been at the forefront for the last decade in confronting new issues related to teaching and learning. These collective efforts have encouraged faculty to engage more directly and more deeply with students and ideas. Central to each of these efforts has been self-reflection and thoughtful analysis of the issues. Sexual orientation has not been a significant part of that personal study or dialogue. For those of us committed to strengthening our academic communities, recognizing this exclusion of the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community demands that we work to reduce the barriers. This will mean a renewed …

Creating A "Tqm" Classroom Through Cooperative Learning, Barbara Millis

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Two important trends in higher education-Total Quality Management and Cooperative Learning-happily result in compatible and creative classroom approaches. In fact, much of the TQM theory is predicated on the noncompetitive teamsork that forms the heart of the cooperative learning movement. This paper discusses how instructors using cooperative learning activities simultaneously create a TQM classroom.

Review Of The Origins Of Agriculture And Settled Life By Richard S. Macneish. Norman And London: University Of Oklahoma Press, 1992. 433 Pages., Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Excerpt:

Following a brief review of the "environmentalist's" (e. g., Ratzel, de Candolle, Childe, Braidwood, and Flannery) and the "materialist's" (e. g., Marx, Vavilov, D. Harris, Binford, and Cohen) accounts, MacNeish presents his "trilinear theory." It consists of "three hypothetical models and three hypotheticaI sets of causes" for the development of plant domestication and sedentism. This "trilinear theory" is a world culture history similar to the multilinear developmental frameworks proposed "by Julian Steward (The Theory of Culture Chtange: The Methodology of Multilinear Evolution, 1955). MacNeish's multilinear scheme is cross-cut by three developmental stages, i. e., food collectors, transitional …
