The Politics Of Retribalization: The Northern Ponca Case, Beth Ritter Aug 1994

The Politics Of Retribalization: The Northern Ponca Case, Beth Ritter

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The recently restored Ponca Tribe of Nebraska has faced considerable challenges to the expression of their tribalism throughout the contact period. As a small. prairie-plains tribe the Ponca have endured the ravages of epidemic disease. land cessions. dispossession and removal. assimilation and finally in 1962. the outright termination of their status as a federally recognized tribe. The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska has been granted the opportunity to attempt retribalization with the 1990 Congressional restoration of their recognized status. The historical circumstances which have contributed to the assaults on their political and cultural identity will be explored within the larger framework …

An Investigation Of Small Apparel Retailers’ Definition Of Customer Satisfaction Using A Naturalistic Approach, Sandra L. Cardillo Aug 1994

An Investigation Of Small Apparel Retailers’ Definition Of Customer Satisfaction Using A Naturalistic Approach, Sandra L. Cardillo

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

This study uses an inductive research design to approach customer satisfaction from the perspective of the small apparel retailer. Social exchange theory served as a theoretical framework. The small apparel retailers interviewed in this study had businesses in non-metropolitan communities located in counties with an agricultural, trade, or diversified economic base. Using a qualitative methodology, hypotheses were generated for future study of small apparel retailers’ definition of customer satisfaction. The work done in this study proposes that customer satisfaction, from small apparel retailers’ perspective is a dynamic, multidimensional process requiring the constant evaluation of exchanges that take place between the …

Review Of Pradyumna P. Karan And Hiroshi Ishii, Nepal: Development And Change In A Landlocked Himalayan Kingdom, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The authors of this book have successfully provided "an outline of some of the crucial issues facing the country" (p. v), one of their declared aims. By examining Nepal's landlocked setting, natural resources, forests, agriculture, industry, transportation systems, demographic characteristics, cultural patterns, settlement patterns, and tourism, the two authors and four collaborators have summarized many current conditions. The inclusion of numerous statistics reinforces the discussion, as well as giving readers a useful collection of data about contemporary Nepal (although the lack of an index diminishes their accessibility somewhat).

Women And The Great Retrenchment: The Political Economy Of Gender In The 1980s, Ann Mari May Jun 1994

Women And The Great Retrenchment: The Political Economy Of Gender In The 1980s, Ann Mari May

College of Business: Faculty Publications

Policy analysts and scholars are only now beginning the serious task of sifting through the debris of the 1980s to chronicle the impacts of policy chtinges and to evaluate the policies as well as the policymakers. The 1980s will no doubt be remembered as having produced the worst recession since the Great Depression and perhaps, more generally, as a period of economic retrenchment [Dugger 1992]. While many segments of society were affected by the restructuring inherent in Reaganomics, the impact on women merits special attention, particularly in light of demographic changes in voting behavior. It has long been understood that …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Social networks and daily activities of children and adolescents living and/or working on the streets of a large Brazilian city were examined. Drawing on data collected through structured surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations, we described street youths’ family situation, social resources, institutional experiences, survival activities, and problem behaviors and investigated differences attributable to age, gender, and living situation (at home or on the street). Youngsters who lived at home and worked on the street appeared to be experiencing orderly development despite their impoverished circumstances. Youngsters who lived on the street showed hallmarks of psychological and physical …

The Effects Of Migration Upon The Quality Of Life Of Elderly Movers In A Small Prairie City: The Case Of Brandon, Manitoba, John Everitt, Barbara Gfellner Feb 1994

The Effects Of Migration Upon The Quality Of Life Of Elderly Movers In A Small Prairie City: The Case Of Brandon, Manitoba, John Everitt, Barbara Gfellner

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Mobility decisions and the effects of migration upon the quality of life of elderly people who had recently relocated to or within Brandon are assessed and compared with the responses ofa non-mover "control group." Although confirming many established results concerning the migration of the elderly, other conclusions also emerged. For instance, migrants and non-movers have a number of different social demographic characteristics, and their needs and desires appear to be quite dissimilar. Although non-movers appear apprehensive about the future, many movers see positive outcomes, in terms of life satisfaction, resulting from their migration. The research also raises the question of …

Changing Priorities In Higher Education: Promotion And Tenure, Robert Diamond

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

A recent study involving over 23,000 faculty chairs, deans and administrators at research universities indicated that even those most directly involved with the present reward system feel that the balance between research and teaching needs to be modified. Most significantly, the results indicate that an effort to modify the system to recognize and reward teaching would be supported by a majority of those surveyed. It may be the time to propose a change in the system.

Ec94-811 Older Nebraskans: Patterns And Changes In Nebraska, 1970-1990, John C. Allen, Jian Wu

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The number of Americans 65 and older increased rapidly in the last 20 years. Nationwide, the growth rate was 27 percent between 1970 and 1980 and 22 percent between 1980 and 1990. In each decade the number of older adults grew more than twice as fast as the general population.

This circular discusses this population increase of the older Nebraska generation by county, towns, and cities.

The Transformation Of Men Into Masquerades And Indian Madras Into Masquerade Cloth In Buguma, Nigeria, Elisha P. Renne, Joanne B. Eicher Jan 1994

The Transformation Of Men Into Masquerades And Indian Madras Into Masquerade Cloth In Buguma, Nigeria, Elisha P. Renne, Joanne B. Eicher

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Kalahari Ijo people of the Niger Delta area of southeastern Nigeria use a group of dark indigo-blue cloths with white patterning to cover the faces of masquerade performers. Subsumed under the name of alubite (masquerade cloth) are at least three distinct types: (1) ukara cloth, an indigo-resist of imported muslin, stitched and dyed by Igbo craftsmen, (2) alubite cloth, a gauze-weave, also an indigo-resist, but of unknown provenance, and (3) pelete bite, an Indian madras from which threads are cut and pulled by Kalahari women to form a new pattern.

The first two types of cloth apparently come …

Challenging Values: Conflict, Contradiction, And Pedagogy, Jacqueline Mintz

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The current crises of economics, demographics, retention, and disgruntled faculty, along with the neglect of the national mission to educate our citizenry for a democratic society, offer an opportunity on the cusp of the millennium to reflect about our values and the values of traditional American education. The literature of travel and cultural studies provides new lenses to help us and our institutions expose deeply held beliefs, assumptions, and the actions that have been taken in their names. Uncovering these beliefs can enable us as educators to reconstruct a common mission through developing a dynamic pedagogy for today 's students, …

Identification And Assessment Of Wildlife Damage: An Overview, Richard A. Dolbeer, Nicholas R. Holler, Donald W. Hawthorne Jan 1994

Identification And Assessment Of Wildlife Damage: An Overview, Richard A. Dolbeer, Nicholas R. Holler, Donald W. Hawthorne

Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook

Wildlife management is often thought of in terms of protecting, enhancing, and nurturing wildlife populations and the habitat needed for their wellbeing. However, many species at one time or another require management actions to reduce conflicts with people or with other wildlife species. Examples include an airport manager modifying habitats to reduce gull activity near runways, a forester poisoning pocket gophers to increase tree seedling survival in a reforestation project, or a biologist trapping an abundant predator or competing species to enhance survival of an endangered species.

Wildlife damage control is an increasingly important part of the wildlife management profession …

Dual Diffusion: Analysis And Implications For Sales Force Management, Madhavan Parthasarathy, Ravipreet S. Sohi, Ronald D. Hampton Jan 1994

Dual Diffusion: Analysis And Implications For Sales Force Management, Madhavan Parthasarathy, Ravipreet S. Sohi, Ronald D. Hampton

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Retail resistance to an innovation can hamper its supply to consumers, thereby influencing product adoption behavior. Given this, a dual diffusion process consisting of both retail and consumer adoption is more appropriate in today's dynamic marketplace. Sales emphasis by manufacturers can strongly influence retail and consumer adoption behaviors, which would be reflected in the shapes of their respective patterns. In this paper, the authors examine the nature of retail adoption and its impact, both positive and negative, on consumer adoption. Following this, they present a strategic framework that lays out the sales management implications of the dual diffusion process.

The Status Of Nebraska Fishes In The Missouri River, 3. Channel Catfish (Ictaluridae: Ictalurus Punctatus), Larry W. Hesse Jan 1994

The Status Of Nebraska Fishes In The Missouri River, 3. Channel Catfish (Ictaluridae: Ictalurus Punctatus), Larry W. Hesse

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The average size of Missouri River channel catfish has declined. The percentage 10 years old or older is 4.8% compared with an unexploited population in which 32% are 10 years and older. From 1944 through 1988 commercial harvest declined as much as 64%. Total mortality was 37% at age 4 and 79% at age 5. The increased mortality occurred as they reached 13 inches and became fully recruited to the commercial fishery. Harvest statistics are not wholly reliable because reports are not verifiable and commercial fishers do not return fish tags. Harvest exceeded a reasonable limit for maximum sustained yield. …

Structuring Constraints On Perceptions Of Upward Influence And Supervisory Relationships, Kathleen J. Krone Jan 1994

Structuring Constraints On Perceptions Of Upward Influence And Supervisory Relationships, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This research examined the effects of centralization of authority on employees’ perceptions of the likelihood of attempting upward influence and their perceptions of supervisory trust and leader-member exchange. Three hundred and sixty-two employees from five different organizations responded to a questionnaire that assessed perceptions of centralization, attitudes toward upward influence, leader-member exchange, and supervisory trust. Consistent with earlier formulations, centralization was operationalized as perceptions of participation in decision making and job autonomy (Hage, 1980; Hage & Aiken, 1967). Results revealed that both job autonomy and participation in decision making significantly affect subordinates’ attitudes toward attempting upward influence and the levels …

Job Complexity, "Type A" Behavior, And Cardiovascular Disorder: A Prospective Study, John Schaubroeck, Daniel C. Ganster, Barbara Ellen Kemmerer

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Interview-based measures of "type A" behavior and psychological and task-person indexes of job complexity were obtained from 251 police and fire department employees with sound cardiovascular health. Fol- low-up data on cardiovascular disorder were collected seven years later from participants who had remained with their organizations. The type A behavior pattern predicted cardiovascular disorder over time, and the relationships between the two complexity indexes and cardio- vascular morbidity were positive among individuals with high type A behavior ratings but negative among those with low ratings. We discuss the implications of these findings for worker health and job design.

Karl Reinhard Publications

Most scholars are understandably preoccupied with the impact of Europeans on native peoples who were passive, unwilling, or resistant participants in that contact. We present in this chapter a different case. The Missouri River tribes, including the Omaha and Ponca, willingly engaged in relations with Euramericans, especially in the fur trade that dominated interaction in this region. The time frame for this study is 1780- 1820, a period when interaction between individual traders and Native Americans was replaced by the dominance of the American Fur Company in organized exploitation of the Missouri River lands and peoples. This involvement later contributed …

Future Extension Programs On Wildlife Damage Management, James E. Miller

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Extension educational programs, in cooperation with other federal and state organizations, significantly contribute to the present status of wildlife damage management as understood by natural resources professionals and the interested public. Although Extension Service, USDA provides national leadership and coordination of programs, most of the effective programs originate at the state and local level Cooperative Extension Service, regardless of the subject matter. This is particularly true in the area of wildlife damage management. For example, a recent compilation of Extension publications and videotapes on wildlife damage management identifies well over 100 titles available throughout the CES System (Ruff, Craven and …
