Mabel Lee And Louise Pound: The University Of Nebraska's Battle Over Women's Intercollegiate Athletics, Kristi Lowenthal
Mabel Lee And Louise Pound: The University Of Nebraska's Battle Over Women's Intercollegiate Athletics, Kristi Lowenthal
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mirroring a cultural shift that brought the American middle class from the Victorian era into the modern era, women's intercollegiate sports encountered stiff resistance from the two overlapping social groups. Mabel Lee, a woman physical educator, brought firmly held Victorian beliefs about feminine propriety and moderation to the University of Nebraska when she was hired as the head of the women's physical education department in 1924. Louise Pound, an English professor at the University, had for years excelled in highly competitive athletics as a member of the new modern middle class. Pound flouted Victorian restraints and refused to enter the …

The Quality Of Life Of Rural Nebraskans, John C. Allen, Rebecca Filkins, Sam Cordes
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Nebraska’s economy has shown growth during recent years. However, the agricultural economy has been experiencing a decline in market prices for most commodities. How have these changes affected rural Nebraskans? How do they perceive their quality of life? Do their perceptions differ by the size of their community, the region in which they live, or their occupation?
This report details results of 3,036 responses to the 1999 Nebraska Rural Poll, the fourth annual effort to take the pulse of rural Nebraskans. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their general well-being and their satisfaction with specific aspects of well-being. …

At Risk In The Writing Classroom: Negotiating A Lesbian Teacher Identity, Irene G. Meaker
At Risk In The Writing Classroom: Negotiating A Lesbian Teacher Identity, Irene G. Meaker
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
"Education is a fearful enterprise," says teacher and philosopher, Parker Palmer. Student-centered/ processoriented pedagogy asks teachers to step out from behind the relative safety of the teacher mask and to enter the risky arena of learning. For the writing teacher, a special challenge is to help students negotiate the risks inherent in the act of writing and in sharing writing with the "Other."
To prevent fears from dominating our students, teachers must model risk-taking and risk negotiation. In my own teaching, my fears around students' reactions to learning my sexual identity meant that I more often reinforced fears than dispelled …

The Blood Runs Through Every One Of Us And We Are Stronger For It: The Role Of Head Start In Promoting Cultural Continuity In Tribal Communities , Linda Mayo Willis, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
This multiple case study examined American Indian Program Branch Head Start directors' perceptions of the role their particular Head Start program plays preserving cultural integrity in tribal communities. Of specific research interest were the unique aspects of the tribal customs of child rearing and early childhood educational practices within each community. Another area of research focused on exploring each director's vision of how the Head Start experience contributes to the future of the children. Ten tribal Head Start directors from the Great Plains region were interviewed. The grand tour question addressed how participants described their perception of the role of …

Adolescent Victims And Intergenerational Issues In Sexual Abuse, Debra B. Hecht, David J. Hansen
Adolescent Victims And Intergenerational Issues In Sexual Abuse, Debra B. Hecht, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The transitional period of adolescence is characterized by a number of changes and challenges that occur both within and outside the individual. Many developmental events occur during adolescence that have a significant impact on an adolescent’s functioning, including a variety of physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social changes. In addition, adolescents may experience a variety of other important events, such as peer group changes, school moves, changes in family structure or functioning, and alterations in societal and community expectations (Hansen, Giacoletti, & Nangle, 1995; Peterson & Hamburg, 1986). Unfortunately, many adolescents are further challenged by being a victim of sexual …
Child Physical Abuse And Neglect, Jody E. Warner-Rogers, David J. Hansen, Debra B. Hecht
Child Physical Abuse And Neglect, Jody E. Warner-Rogers, David J. Hansen, Debra B. Hecht
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Children ideally develop and learn about their world from the safe and stimulating environment of their home. Therefore, it is quite disturbing when violence occurs within the supposedly protective domains of the home and the parent-child relationship, although such acts have been committed throughout history (Zigler & Hall, 1989). Even though acts of child maltreatment have a long history, the concept that society should be responsible for the protection of children, including identification, reporting, and treatment of both the victims and perpetrators of maltreatment, is a relatively recent development. This chapter addresses the physical abuse and neglect of children by …
Homeless And Working Street Youth In Latin America: A Developmental Review, Marcela Raffaelli
Homeless And Working Street Youth In Latin America: A Developmental Review, Marcela Raffaelli
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
In most Latin American countries, a substantial proportion of children grow up in circumstances of extreme deprivation and early independence. These include "street youth", youngsters who work and sometimes live on city streets in developing countries. Most street youth research has been conducted from an applied perspective and emphasizes service and policy needs. Little developmental research has been conducted with street youth, and the long-term impact of street life is largely unknown. This review synthesizes empirical findings on the developmentally-relevant experiences of sub-groups of street youth in Latin America. It includes research in four areas: social networks, daily survival, health …
Review Of Inventing The Savage: The Social Construction Of Native American Criminality By Luana Ross, Elizabeth Grobsmith
Review Of Inventing The Savage: The Social Construction Of Native American Criminality By Luana Ross, Elizabeth Grobsmith
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Despite the growing literature on Native American crime and delinquency, alcoholism and unemployment, and the social ills that plague both urban and reservation Indians, there is a true dearth of information on incarcerated American Indians. Yet Indians comprise disproportionately high percentages of prisoners in all state penal facilities and federal prisons as well. Several factors account for this dearth. First, conducting sociological or anthropological research among incarcerated individuals certainly poses challenges. Second, the presumption that Native Americans prefer not to be studied or analyzed may deter some from considering research on such topics. Third, there is so little literature on …
Review Of Two Spirit People: American Indian Lesbian Women And Gay Men Edited By Lester B. Brown, Carolyn Epple
Review Of Two Spirit People: American Indian Lesbian Women And Gay Men Edited By Lester B. Brown, Carolyn Epple
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Lester Brown's edited volume acquaints social workers with "two spirits," that is, those Native Americans who are "gay," "lesbian," or who may adopt mixed-gender practices and roles. Although well-intended, the attempts to sensitize social workers to Natives' lives are occasionally thwarted by overgeneralizations and weak analyses.
In the three chapters on identity, the intricacies of culture, gender, and sexuality theory are watered down and confused. In their comparison of Lakota and Dakota practices, Little Crow, Judy Wright, and Brown conjure the odd label "non-heterosexual gender identity" and collapse gender into sexuality. Mary Ann Jacobs and Lester Brown's piece often homogenizes …
Review Of Comparing Cowboys And Frontiers By Richard W. Slatta, Thomas D. Hall
Review Of Comparing Cowboys And Frontiers By Richard W. Slatta, Thomas D. Hall
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The goal of this collection is to encourage the comparative study of frontiers and social history. The first part, six chapters, focuses on "Topics" for comparisons, while the second part, four chapters, discusses how to do comparative history and critically evaluates much recent work. Slatta begins with a comparative discussion of the Venezuelan Llanos, southern Chile, the Pampas, Brazil, and the Great Plains of North America, suggesting that a frontier is a membrane metaphor through which objects, people, and ideas pass in both directions.
Slatta then discusses how indigenous peoples quickly adopted feral (or sometimes stolen) horses, which led to …

Exciting changes at Great Plains Research (GPR) are occurring. As the new Associate Editor for the social sciences, I will be encouraging and handling submissions relevant to the social sciences, including anthropology, cultural science, economics, ethnography, family science, psychology, and sociology. Our aim is to expand the scope of high quality submissions to GPR in several ways. First, we are working to add major abstract and indexing services in the social sciences. We understand the importance of promoting the impact of our published work. Second, we are soliciting synthesis and thoughtful reviews of major social issues for the Great Plains …
Critique: Geological Errors In Walter Prescott Webb’S The Great Plains, Stephen S. Hart
Critique: Geological Errors In Walter Prescott Webb’S The Great Plains, Stephen S. Hart
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The comprehensive nature of Walter Prescott Webb's (1931) text, The Great Plains, has made this book a classic reference. However, the scientific errors and omissions, as well as the availability of more current research on the geology, hydrology, and physical geography of the region, suggest that the information presented should be viewed with more skepticism.

Distance Education In Nebraska: Access And Strategies, Sarah Cunningham, S. Kay Rockwell, David W. Brooks
Nebraska Network 21: Publications
As the fifteenth largest state, geographically, with the tenth smallest population, Nebraska faces many unique challenges. Sixty percent of the population resides in the eastern-third of the state while 33 of the 93 counties in Nebraska have a population of less than 5,000. One of the challenges facing such a geographi-cally dispersed state is how to support educational and technological efforts that benefit all of its citizens. Nebraska has been a leader in distance education. Nebraska became the first state to own its own satellite transponder in 1990. It supports public television and radio transmitters with digital transmission providing 28 …

A Consonance Of Civility And Good-Will: Review Of Cleanth Brooks And Robert Penn Warren: A Literary Correspondence, Ed. James A. Grimshaw, Jr., Keen Butterworth
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The strength of Brooks's friendship pervades his letters published in Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren: A Literary Correspondence. Just as obvious is the strength of Warren's attachment to Brooks. Throughout these letters, extending from 1933 to 1988, mostly concerned with literary and professional matters, a tone of respectful deference obtains, but breaking through that tone quite often are glimpses of their heartfelt affection for one another. These glimpses usually come at the ends of letters, when the business matters have been concluded and one expresses his desire to see the other and his family, or is particularly warm in …
Child Physical Abuse, David J. Hansen, Georganna Sedlar, Jody E. Warner-Rogers
Child Physical Abuse, David J. Hansen, Georganna Sedlar, Jody E. Warner-Rogers
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Widespread attention to the problem of child physical abuse has increased dramatically in recent decades. Extensive research evidence has described child physical abuse as a complex, multidimensional phenomenon that is best assessed by procedures using multiple modalities (e.g., interview, self-report, direct observation) that address multiple content areas. Comprehensive assessment is essential for identifying risk and occurrence of abuse, guiding the focus or direction of treatment, as well as monitoring treatment efficacy and outcome, all of which may be disseminated to interested parties as appropriate (e.g., CPS, judicial system, school, other treatment providers). Increasingly specific and relevant procedures have become available …
The Ecological Validity Of Jury Simulations: Is The Jury Still Out?, Brian H. Bornstein
The Ecological Validity Of Jury Simulations: Is The Jury Still Out?, Brian H. Bornstein
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Despite the need to assess the ecological validity of jury simulation research before generalizing from simulations to the behavior of real jurors, surprisingly little jury research has directly addressed issues of validity. The present paper reviews the extant research on two aspects of the validity question—specifically, research that has compared different samples of mock jurors, and research that has manipulated the medium of trial presentation. In addition, jury simulation research published in the first 20 years of Law and Human Behavior is analyzed with respect to these variables. The majority of simulations used student-jurors and presented the trial in written …

Urbanization Of Rural Landscapes Syllabus And Teaching Materials From A University Course, Richard Olson
CARI Extension and Education Materials for Sustainable Agriculture
An introduction of the students to the structure and expectations of the course, the learning objectives, and the evaluation procedures for determining grades. Through a lecture/slide presentation. the students are introduced to the concept of the landscape as the key level in the spatial hierarchy for evaluating the effects of land use decisions. The relationship between landscape structure and landscape function is explored. A gallery walk exercise promotes interaction among the students as they draw on their own knowledge to determine the factors at each level of the spatial hierarchy that are most important in influencing land use decisions. Readings …
