Avatares Del Proceso De La Institucionalización De La Literatura En Chile En Las Revistas Literarias Del Siglo Xix, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Black Enclaves Of Violence: Race And Homicide In Great Plains Cities, 1890-1920, Clare V. Mckanna Jr.
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
These killings, occurring three years apart in Coffeyville, Kansas, offer bookend images of interracial homicides in the Great Plains. In the first shooting, Charles Vann, a black man and the victim, had been drinking at Walnut and Eleventh Streets in the "tenderloin" district, a black neighborhood in Coffeyville. This region, near the railroad yards, provided entertainment for black customers and occasionally whites in saloons, brothels, and gambling parlors. William Rodecker, a white male horse trader, had just arrived from Missouri and started drinking heavily in this area. About 8 P.M. Rodecker accosted Vann at the corner of Twelfth and Walnut …

Review Of Women In Higher Education An Encyclopedia. Ana M. Martinez Aleman And Kristen A. Renn, Editors., Jean M. Haar
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Women have constituted a majority of students in American colleges and universities since 1979. Women earned more than half of all associates, bachelors and masters degrees and more than one-third of all doctorates (Touchton & Davis, 1991). Even with these numbers, the study of women in higher education has often been overlooked (Glazer, Bensimon, & Townsend, 1993). Women in Higher Education: An Encyclopedia atones for overlooking "almost entirely women's role as shapers and interpreters of the academy" (Glazer et al., p. ix). The editors have created a comprehensive source of information and resources related to women in higher education in …

Individual And Community Well-Being: Perceptions Of Change In Rural Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Nebraska’s economy has continued to struggle during the past year. In addition, many rural communities are experiencing population decline. How have these changes affected rural Nebraskans? How do rural Nebraskans perceive their quality of life? Do their perceptions differ by community size, the region in which they live, or their occupation? How do they feel about their community? Are they planning to move from their community in the next year?
This report details 3,087 responses to the 2003 Nebraska Rural Poll, the eighth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions regarding their individual …

Doing Rawls Justice: An Experimental Study Of Income Distribution Norms, Philip A. Michelbach, John T. Scott, Richard E. Matland, Brian H. Bornstein
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Distributive justice has been the focus of political theory with the postwar rise of the social welfare state, and Rawls’ A Theory of Justice (1971) is arguably the most important work of political philosophy during that period. Parallel to this theoretical literature is a body of empirical research into distributive justice. We offer a synthesis of the theoretical and empirical approaches with an experimental study of how individuals use allocation principles in making judgments concerning income distribution under conditions of strict impartiality. Our experiment is designed in part to examine the extent to which they prioritize them consistent with Rawls’ …

Three studies examined associations between early child care and child outcomes among families different from those in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Early Child Care Research Network study. Results suggest that quality is an important influence on children’s development and may be an important moderator of the amount of time in care. Thus, the generalizability of the NICHD findings may hinge on the context in which those results were obtained. These studies, conducted in three national contexts, with different regulatory climates, ranges of child care quality, and a diversity of family characteristics, suggest a need …
The Cups Of Blood Are Emptied Pietism And Cultural Heritage In Two Danish Immigrant Schools On The Great Plains, John Mark Nielsen
The Cups Of Blood Are Emptied Pietism And Cultural Heritage In Two Danish Immigrant Schools On The Great Plains, John Mark Nielsen
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Following the American Civil War, the vast sweep of the Great Plains exerted a powerful force on the imagination of Americans and Northern European immigrants, resulting in a period of rapid settlement. Immigrant communities in particular attempted to establish institutions through which their language, beliefs and cultural heritage might be preserved. The history of these immigrant institutions mirrors the challenges immigrant communities faced in confronting not only the vicissitudes of climate and evolving economic conditions but also the pressures of assimilation.
Numerous works of both fiction and nonfiction explore the broader challenges of life in the Great Plains; none captures …

“Parent Teams” And The Everyday Interactions Of Co-Parenting In Stepfamilies, Dawn O. Braithwaite, M. Chad Mcbride, Paul Schrodt
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Family scholars have yet to explore substantially the day-to-day interactions of stepfamily systems. Our focus was on the everyday interactions of parent teams, adults who are co-parenting within different stepfamily households, describing the characteristics of their communication. Twenty-two parents, stepparents, and partners (N = 22) kept diaries for two weeks, each time they interacted with an adult in the other household. Results detail the frequency, timing, location, and length of interactions; initiator, channel, and topics; and reasons for interaction. Interactions were short, everyday encounters rather than extended, planned meetings. The majority of the interactions were via telephone, followed by …

Perceptions Of Safety And Crime In Rural Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
There is a common perception that rural areas are generally safer compared to urban areas. However, many changes are occurring in rural Nebraska. Increased media attention has been given to methamphetamine use in rural areas of the state. Given all that, how safe do rural Nebraskans feel? Do they believe crime has increased in their community? Do their opinions differ by their region, size of their community or their occupation?
This report details 3,087 responses to the 2003 Nebraska Rural Poll, the eighth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions about personal safety. …

This paper examines the factors that influence the satisfaction and retention of family and general practice physicians in Nebraska’s 87 non-metropolitan counties. Extensive research has previously been done in the area of rural physician recruitment. This research project compares the existing research with current trends in physician recruitment. In addition, it provides further insight into the less-thoroughly studied area of rural physician retention.
Satisfaction with practice-related and lifestyle factors is measured and compared with the level of influence of those same factors in the initial practice selection decision. Demographic characteristics are also considered in the analysis of data and resultant …

A Review Of Gendered Consumption In Sport And Leisure, Lee Mcginnis, Seungwoo Chun, Julia Mcquillan
A Review Of Gendered Consumption In Sport And Leisure, Lee Mcginnis, Seungwoo Chun, Julia Mcquillan
Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications
In this review, we examine literature from leisure sciences, sociology, marketing, and history to demonstrate how Firat’s (1994) modern significations of gender categories can be used as an effective lens for showing the lingering effects of modernism. In the process, we provide evidence in a sport and leisure context of what is associated with men and masculinity is valued over what is associated with women and femininity.
In the postmodern era, which many Western cultures are now beginning to experience, the categories of sex and gender are beginning to collapse and multiple categories of gender are arising. This transformation, according …

The Ignored Disease: The Aids Epidemic 1981–1987, Heather L. Graff, Heather Graff Bloom
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
Less than six months after Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th president of the United States, the federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta reported pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, in five gay men. In the United States, AIDS was first diagnosed among gay men in New York City and San Francisco. There were several media trends for AIDS coverage in the 1980s. In the early 1980s, AIDS was mainly thought of as a gay-related disease. In the mid- l 980s, AIDS cases were found in hemophiliacs, intravenous drug users and "celebrities." Coverage in the late 1980s focused on heterosexuals and …
Chinese Parents’ Knowledge, Attitudes, And Practices About Sexuality Education For Adolescents In The Family, Wenli Liu, Carolyn P. Edwards
Chinese Parents’ Knowledge, Attitudes, And Practices About Sexuality Education For Adolescents In The Family, Wenli Liu, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
This study used a cross-sectional, multi-site survey design to examine Chinese parents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices in the area of sexuality education for adolescents. Three cities in China were selected for the survey, and the final sample contained 841 parents with children ranged from 11 to 19 years. The majority of Chinese parents were found to have reasonably accurate knowledge about sexuality and positive attitudes toward sexuality and sexuality education. However, most Chinese parents reported that they never talked with their children about sexuality. Parental education was strongly related to both knowledge and attitudes. Gender of parent was a significant …
A Culture Of Relationships: Early Care For Italian And American Children, Carolyn P. Edwards
A Culture Of Relationships: Early Care For Italian And American Children, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
A culture of childhood is a shared vision – an agreed upon vision – of the needs and rights of children, including ideas about how the people of the community can collectively nurture them and at the same time be renewed by them. In other words, it is a set of values, beliefs, and practices that people have created to guide their way of nurturing young children and their families. The vision is about investing in young children and investing in the supports and relationships that children need to learn and grow, both for the reason that children carry our …
Community Correlates Of Rural Youth Violence, D. Wayne Osgood, Jeff M. Chambers
Community Correlates Of Rural Youth Violence, D. Wayne Osgood, Jeff M. Chambers
Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications
Rates of crime and delinquency vary widely across communities, and research going back many decades provides a good understanding of the nature, correlates, and probable causes of these community differences. Unfortunately, previous studies have been limited in an important way. Virtually all studies of communities and crime are based on large urban areas, almost totally excluding nonmetropolitan areas—that is, rural areas and smaller cities and towns. The findings in this Bulletin help to fill some gaps in the research by examining variations in rates of juvenile violence across nonmetropolitan communities in Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, and South Carolina.
Social disorganization is …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
An intensive, experiential travel course in Agroecosystems Analysis was conducted in Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska (United States) during summers of 1998 and 1999. The intended student audience was advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. Pretravel readings and a week-long series of farm visits, which consisted of in-depth interviews with the farmers and their families, prepared student teams to analyze and evaluate the production, economic, environmental, and social sustainability of 10 farms. Students shared their analyses both orally and in written reports. Based on a multifaceted student evaluation process, we found that participants were highly motivated, strongly engaged with the course …

Learning Curves: Fieldwork As Context For Interrogating The Dynamics Of Work In American Culture, Judith Hiltner
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
For the past quarter century, eloquent voices in the academy have articulated the value of hands on experiences in the workplace to reinforce and interrogate classroom learning. Internships and other types of fieldwork experiences enable students to test career options, improve their employment potential, challenge assumptions underlying theoretic approaches to the discipline, gain familiarity with the language and ethnography of the professional work places they plan to enter, and enlarge their sense of the role of research in their fields. Aprotracted experience that counterpoints theoretical and applied dimensions of a discipline can nurture critical habits of mind that will persist …
Diversity Opportunities For Higher Education And Honors Programs: A View From Nebraska, Peter Longo, John Falconer
Diversity Opportunities For Higher Education And Honors Programs: A View From Nebraska, Peter Longo, John Falconer
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
While honors programs were developed in part to actively engage top students in undergraduate education, they also have demonstrated a capacity for leading innovation in post-secondary institutions. Innovations come in the form of curricular development, service learning programs, and independent scholarship. As institutions strive to find effective approaches to improving access to and diversity in higher education, honors programs, in a most general sense, offer a link between diversity and improved access. This paper explores the role of honors programs in expanding access and diversity—an area traditionally focused on broader student populations. Demographic changes in Nebraska, marked by increased ethnic …
Single-Sex Schools And Classroom: Is "Separate But Comparable" Legally Permissible?, Donald F. Uerling, Gretchen Hall
Single-Sex Schools And Classroom: Is "Separate But Comparable" Legally Permissible?, Donald F. Uerling, Gretchen Hall
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Most public schools in the United States have been coeducational, based at least in part on a general belief that single-sex schools and classrooms were legally impermissible. Now the issue of single-sex education has been raised again by the No Child Left Behind Act of2001, which provides that federal funds may be made available to local education agencies for an array of innovative assistance programs, including programs to provide same-gender schools and classrooms. An analysis of applicable law, coupled with a review of the merits of single-sex schooling, suggests that "separate but comparable" single-sex public school education might be legally …
Geography Of Population Change And Redistribution Within The Post-Frontier Great Plains, J. Clark Archer, Richard Lonsdale
Geography Of Population Change And Redistribution Within The Post-Frontier Great Plains, J. Clark Archer, Richard Lonsdale
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The popular vision of the Great Plains as a region of ongoing population decline is only partly appropriate. In a fundamental transformation of the population geography previously set in the late 19th century, there is an emerging divide between growing metropolitan centers concentrated along the region's periphery and a vast interior struggling to hold its traditional rural population. The size and geographical distribution of population within the Great Plains region is examined over time with the aid of cartographic and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. Intercensal net migration rates estimated using the vital statistics-based residual method are mapped by county …

Relationship Between Community Satisfaction And Migration Intentions Of Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca J. Vogt, John C. Allen, Sam Cordes
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Though many nonmetropolitan counties in the United States experienced population gains in the 1990s, many of the nonmetropolitan counties in the Great Plains continued to experience population declines. Thus, the reasons that people are moving need to be explored. This paper examines possible reasons by analyzing the relationship between community satisfaction and migration intentions of nonmetropolitan Nebraskans. Data used for this analysis were from an annual survey mailed to 6,500 residents living in nonmetropolitan counties in the state. The survey data were analyzed at two levels. First, demographic comparisons were made between those who planned to stay in their communities …

Asset Based Community Development: A Model For Nebraska Communities?, John C. Allen
Cornhusker Economics
The issue of how and sometimes even if we should expend p ublic dollars to support the development of small rural communities continues to receive attention at the federal and state levels, especially throughout the Great Plains. Traditional strategies focusing on industrial recruitment often has not paid off for rural areas in maintaining population, and many have questioned whether the public investment provides economic benefits at the local level.
Diagnosing Ancient Diphyllobothriasis From Chinchorro Mummies, Karl J. Reinhard, Otto Urban
Diagnosing Ancient Diphyllobothriasis From Chinchorro Mummies, Karl J. Reinhard, Otto Urban
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Diphyllobothrium pacificum has been reported as a human parasite from coprolites and skeletons in Peru and Chile. Our analysis of Chinchorro mummies from Chile provides the oldest evidence of D. pacificum directly associated with human mummies. These mummies date between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. The basis for our diagnosis is presented. We find that the size of the eggs in the mummies is smaller than other discoveries of D. pacificum. We suggest that this is due to the peculiar circumstances of preservation of parasite eggs within mummies and the release of immature eggs into the intestinal tract as the …

Young Children’S Close Relationships Outside The Family: Parental Ethnotheories In Four Communities In Norway, United States, Turkey, And Korea, Vibeke G. Aukrust, Carolyn Pope Edwards, Asiye Kumru, Lisa Knoche, Misuk Kim
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Parents, preschools, and schools in different cultures vary greatly in the extent to which children are encouraged to develop long-term relationships with people outside the family circle—peers and teachers. In contemporary societies, parents face complex choices as they bridge children’s transitions to a wider world. This exploratory cross-cultural study used a newly developed questionnaire, Parental Concerns for Preschool Children Survey, to assess parental beliefs, values, and judgments. The sample included 521 parents from four cities: Oslo, Norway; Lincoln (Nebraska), United States; Ankara, Turkey; Seoul, Korea. Strong cultural community differences were found in parental descriptions of their own child’s friendships and …
