Mari Sandoz’ Sociological Imagination: Capital City As An Ideal Type, Michael R. Hill Jan 1989

Mari Sandoz’ Sociological Imagination: Capital City As An Ideal Type, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper examines Mari Sandoz' (1939) novel Capital City from the perspective of sociology. ‘I outline Sandoz' data collection methods and consider her use of ideal-type analysis and sociological imagination. From the perspective of literary critics it may be, as Helen Stauffer (1982: 131) judged, that Capital City "is not a successful novel." It is not my purpose, however, to contest the merit of Sandoz' work on literary grounds. Rather, I invoke the viewpoint of the sociologist and note the criteria on which I conclude that Capital City is a complex and well-executed sociological study.

American Charities As The Herald To A New Age, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1989

American Charities As The Herald To A New Age, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The publication of American Charities in 1894 signaled the start of a new age. It crystallized the views of men and women working in economics, sociology, history, and philanthropy. Massive social changes-in urbanization, industrialization, immigration, the roles of women, and the relation between the home and the marketplace-generated social strains that could not be accommodated by traditional world views. Social problems in this new situation, particularly poverty, were perceived increasingly as secular instead of religious issues. Solutions to these social problems were needed urgently, and Amos G. Warner, the author of American Charities, articulated a new vision amidst the …

Identification Of Learning Styles Strategies Which Enable College Students With Differing Personality Temperaments To Cope With Learning Blocks, Gholam Hossein Zamani Zarghani

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to identify the major coping strategies which college students with different personality temperament used to deal with their learning blocks. Students' temperament type was obtained from the pool of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator results available at the Agricultural College, UN-L. An instrument measuring learning blocks was designed and administered in the Fall, 1987. The Coping strategy Inventory (CSI) was developed and administered in the spring, 1988. One hundred and twenty seven agricultural college students responded to the first phase of the study, and 230 agricultural college students took the CSI. The Statistical package for …

A Sociobiological Perspective On The Development Of Human Reproductive Strategies, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending May 1988

A Sociobiological Perspective On The Development Of Human Reproductive Strategies, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Humans show a great deal of variability in their reproductive behavior, including types of sexual activity, types of ties between males and females, and ways of arranging for the rearing of offspring. We will consider three principal topics: (1) Father absence versus father presence, contrasting children who are reared in a family system in which there is a closely involved and economically contributing father in contrast to a family system in which women rear their children in cooperation with other women (usually kin) and without consistent help from a man who is father to children. (2) Peer rearing versus parent …

Structure Of Agriculture And Women's Culture In The Great Plains, Cornella Butler Flora, Jan L. Flora Jan 1988

Structure Of Agriculture And Women's Culture In The Great Plains, Cornella Butler Flora, Jan L. Flora

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T he family farm has prevailed as a bastion of petty capitalism in the Great Plains. Although capital and labor are highly differentiated in the larger society, they are combined in the family production unit in Great Plains agriculture. In addition to being the economic base for much of the Great Plains from the settlement period onward, the family farm provided a cultural base from which a series of values emerged. Women were important in reproducing this culture that tended to stress agrarian values and the primacy of the family as building blocks for a community based on the values …

Research By Bureaucracy: Hattie Plum Williams And The National Commission On Law Observance And Enforcement, 1929-1931, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper explores the bureaucratized research activities (1929-1931) of the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement (NCLOE) from the perspective of Hattie Plum Williams' sociobiographical experience. Williams was a doctoral student of George E. Howard and earned her Ph.D. in 1915 -- the ftrst doctorate in sociology awarded by the University of Nebraska. That same year, she joined the Nebraska faculty and eventually became Chair of the Department (1922-1928).2 In 1931, at age 53, this full professor was called upon be an unpaid fieldworker, gathering data according to rigid protocols stipulated by the NCLOE. Archival reconstruction of Williams' "view …

The Intellectual Legacy Of Nebraska Sociology: A Bibliographical Chronology Of Separately Published Works, 1887-1989, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The ftrst full century of sociological scholarship at the University of Nebraska rests solidly on numerous contributions to the acknowledged pinnacle of academic work: single-author monographs published by scholarly presses. Collaborative works, including jointly-authored monographs and scholarly editorial projects, round out the separately published volumes in the continually growing library of Nebraska sociology. Several works are recognized classics and have been revised and revived in various editions. The sociological work flowing from Nebraska roots is evidenced by inspection of the bibliography below.

If one wished to deftne a "Nebraska school of sociology," one could do worse than look to the …

Women Sociologists In The Midwest: A Status Update, Mary Ann Lamanna, Baila Miller, Helen A. Moore Jul 1987

Women Sociologists In The Midwest: A Status Update, Mary Ann Lamanna, Baila Miller, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In this article, an earlier study of the status of academic women sociologists in the Midwest that was extended to 1984-1985 is discussed. Type of appointment, rank, and chairpersons, as well as position in a Ph.D. rather than an M.A. program were used in the study as indicators of employment status. Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) leadership positions and participation in the annual MSS meeting served as indicators of professional participation. The results show that gains in employment status for women slowed in the 1980s. Employment of women in sociology department positions, especially in full-time positions and higher ranks, continued to …

Nebraska Settlements: Status, Trends, And Policy Choices, David R. Dimartino, Russell L. Smith

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

This chapter looks at historical and contemporary trends in Nebraska's system of incorporated places. Particular attention is given to changes in the number and proportion of places in different population size categories, the movement of places between different size categories, and what Nebraska's settlement system is likely to look like in the future. A review of past and recent trends, together with forecasts about the future, indicates a likely increase in the number of very small places, major shifts for middle-sized places, and continued growth in the number of places over 5,000 population. Based upon these trends, three separate needs …

Physically Disabled Women And New Directions In Public Policy, 1977-1987., Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Women with physical disabilities now demand new directions in public policy. Starting a mere decade ago, in 1977, a driving momentum redefined the self-concepts, expectations, and united actions of disabled women. This burgeoning social movement is documented here through the geometric growth of writings articulating the vision of a more active and independent group. An overview of this Iiterature and its policy implications is provided.

"Martha's Rules": An Alternative To Robert's Rules Of Order, Anne Minahan Jul 1986

"Martha's Rules": An Alternative To Robert's Rules Of Order, Anne Minahan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

For several years I have been teaching a social work course on how social workers can make their employing organization more responsive to consumers. We study how decisions are made in organizations. The students and I have become intrigued with the use of consensus decision-making in some organizations. Many—but by no means all—of these organizations are feminist organizations that wish to put feminist beliefs and philosophy into practice within organizations and to avoid structured administrative hierarchies for decision making. In their study of consensus decision-making organizations, students have reported that some participants are impatient with the time required by the …

It gets away from foolish notions that depression is automatically a sign of personal weakness or mental illness.

The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Job Satisfaction Of Secondary Marketing Education Teachers, Connie Kay Staehr Plessman Dec 1985

The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Job Satisfaction Of Secondary Marketing Education Teachers, Connie Kay Staehr Plessman

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the personality characteristics of secondary marketing teachers, and (2) to examine the relationship between personality characteristics and selected demographic and attitudinal variables with job satisfaction (intrinsic, extrinsic, and general) of marketing teachers. A random sample of 475 marketing teachers was drawn from the membership of the national Marketing Education Association; responses were received from 73 percent of the marketing teachers surveyed. Two instruments, the Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, were combined with attitudinal and demographic questions for use in data collection. Eight null hypotheses were proposed to investigate …

Focusing Faculty Development: Targeting, John Sharpham, Lanny Morreau Jul 1980

Focusing Faculty Development: Targeting, John Sharpham, Lanny Morreau

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

Faculty development programs usually provide a variety of services for interested faculty. Much of what is provided is stressed as a service, available on a walk-in, voluntary basis, and tends to be focused on the university faculty as a whole. This approach requires the faculty to be initiators, asking them to avail themselves of the services available, and therefore supports active, self-motivated teachers. Centra's findings on faculty development practices underlined this when he identified "... teachers who wanted to get better" as the group "most involved, while those needed improvement were seen as least involved" (1976, p. 29).

Also, the …
