Form Vs. Function: Assessing The Effects Of The Paddle-And-Anvil Technique In Cooking Vessels, Annabel Hendrickson
Form Vs. Function: Assessing The Effects Of The Paddle-And-Anvil Technique In Cooking Vessels, Annabel Hendrickson
Nebraska Anthropologist
This experimental study analyzed the effects of the paddle-and-anvil forming technique in conjunction with burnishing, with the goal of comparing vessel performance between different forming techniques. Due to the compaction of clay minerals involved in the paddling process, the paddled vessels were predicted to be less permeable, more heat conductive, easier to wash, and stronger than their un-paddled counterparts. The results did not reflect this hypothesis; instead, the tests showed that the effects of paddling and burnishing are not consistent across all aspects of vessel performance, reflecting the difference between vessel forming and surface finishing techniques and displaying the importance …
Unsettling The West: Migration Routes And Homesteading Through Oral Histories, Sidney Wickham
Unsettling The West: Migration Routes And Homesteading Through Oral Histories, Sidney Wickham
Nebraska Anthropologist
Westward expansion in the nineteenth-century United States has long been framed through settler-centered historical narratives that emphasize progress and national development. This article employs oral history as an ethnographic method to examine migration routes and homesteading experiences in Nebraska and the broader Midwest, foregrounding how memory, storytelling, and lived experience function as cultural practices. Drawing on interviews with descendants of homesteaders, community members, and museum professionals, alongside diaries, newspapers, and archival materials, this study analyzes how migration was remembered, narrated, and transmitted across generations. Rather than treating overland trails and homesteads as singular pathways of movement, this research situates them …
A Semiotic Analysis Of German-American Cultural Suppression In The Lincoln Freie Presse From 1914 To 1918, Elle Ward
Nebraska Anthropologist
This study performs a historical semiotic content analysis of the Lincoln Freie Presse to document the processes of cultural coercion and resultant identity erasure within the German- American press of Nebraska during the critical period of January 1914 to December 1918. The research establishes a semiotic baseline (1914–1916) characterized by high linguistic and content autonomy and then tracks the immediate, stark shifts following the U.S. entry into World War I (the coercion period) and the succeeding mass anti-German hysteria (1917–1918). Quantitative findings convey a rapid and overwhelming visual conquest of the newspaper’s spatio-textual landscape: patriotic symbolism surged from zero to …

Out-Group And In-Group Relational Trust In Group Coaching With First-Grade Teachers: A Single Case Study, Jentry S. Barrett, Rachel E. Schachter, Jungwon Eum, Gwen Nugent, Kathleen M. Rudasill
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Coaching has become a prominent professional learning tool for helping early childhood teachers (birth–8) implement curriculum and research-based practices in their classrooms. One coaching strategy that supports positive changes in teacher practice and child outcomes is building trust between the coach and teacher(s). However, there is limited understanding of the nature of trust-building in coaching, particularly in group coaching configurations. There are two types of trust to consider in the context of group coaching: out-group trust between an outside coach and the teachers, and in-group trust between the teachers experiencing coaching who already have a relationship. This case study aimed …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is a major irrigated crop in eastern Nebraska, where recent expansions in irrigated agriculture and projected trends in irrigation demand necessitate thorough investigations of approaches that can optimize its irrigation management. In this study, the AquaCrop model was calibrated and validated using 19 variable irrigation treatments from a five-year field experiment. The model accurately simulated canopy cover, soil water content, and grain yield, with validation normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) of 12%, 7%, and 7%, respectively. The model was subsequently applied to estimate soybean yield and water requirement during a 15-year period (2010–2024) …

Bridging The Gap: Predictors Of Alignment Of Parent And Caseworker Perceptions Of Engagement, Jianchao Lai, Michelle I. Graef
Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications
This study examined predictors of alignment between parents’ and caseworkers’ perceptions of family engagement in child welfare services. Using data from 2,274 Alternative Response (AR)–eligible families randomized to AR or Traditional Response, engagement was assessed across the domains of Receptivity, Buy-in, Worker-family Relationship, and Mistrust using a modified Yatchmenoff (2005) scale. Multinomial logistic regression models identified factors associated with agreement and discrepancy between ratings of family engagement within the parent and worker dyad. While both parents and workers valued engagement, workers were more likely to provide higher overall engagement ratings, although the direction of discrepancy varied across specific subscales. Greater …

Toward A General Legislative Presumption Of Probation In Nebraska, Velma Lockman
Toward A General Legislative Presumption Of Probation In Nebraska, Velma Lockman
Nebraska Law Review
“It is curious that the Legislature has chosen to give a presumption of probation for more serious felony offenses, but not for lesser misdemeanor offenses.” With those words, Judge Bishop concluded a heart-wrenching opinion in State v. Anderson, which upheld Courtney Anderson’s sentence of 240 days in jail. Despite being sentenced for a first offense Class I misdemeanor and nearly every sentencing factor counseling in favor of probation, the district court decided to separate Ms. Anderson from her two children, one of whom was a newborn. A combination of the Nebraska Supreme Court’s highly deferential standard of review for excessive …
Protecting (Restorative) Justice: An Analysis Of Confidentiality, Admissibility And Privilege Provisions In State Law, Thalia Gonzalez, Aidan Lorraine Tomlinson
Protecting (Restorative) Justice: An Analysis Of Confidentiality, Admissibility And Privilege Provisions In State Law, Thalia Gonzalez, Aidan Lorraine Tomlinson
Nebraska Law Review
Over the last thirty years, the use of restorative justice within and adjacent to state juvenile and criminal proceedings, including community contexts, has expanded significantly in the United States. As such, what once could be fairly characterized by scholars as a norm and practice at the legal margins has moved widely into the mainstream. As increased legal institutionalization occurred, so too has scholarly attention. Shifting away from foundational “first generation” theoretical and empirical legal studies of practices and programs, a second stream of interdisciplinary legal scholarship has emerged centralizing structural questions as to the legalization of restorative justice. In this …

Posthumous Restorative Justice, Michael L. Moffitt
Nebraska Law Review
Restorative justice (“RJ”) processes typically envision the prospect of voluntary participation by those who suffered harm, by those who caused the harm, and often by the community or communities of people who surround them. When one or more of these potential participants opts not to participate, RJ processes often adapt to provide as many of the restorative benefits as possible to those who do choose to participate. This Article asks what, if any, adaptations of RJ processes may be appropriate in contexts in which some or all of the people listed above cannot participate, because they are now dead.
Restorative Reparatory Justice, Inga N. Laurent
Restorative Reparatory Justice, Inga N. Laurent
Nebraska Law Review
As global calls for reparatory justice—aimed at addressing “historical” and ongoing harms stemming from genocide, dispossession, assimilation, and enslavement—grow, this Article explores critical challenges in designing transformative processes of reparation. While a host of transitional justice mechanisms, such as reparations, tribunals, and truth and reconciliation processes are at the forefront of these discussions, a critical examination of their limitations will provide the groundwork for their enhancement. Past applications of transitional justice mechanisms have frequently failed to address root causes of violence, which reinforces State power despite its failures to protect its citizens from that violence, causing secondary harm to survivors/victims.
Protecting Plaintiff Interests From Third-Party Influence: A Policy Framework To Address The Rise Of Third-Party Litigation Financing, Jack Lorkovic
Protecting Plaintiff Interests From Third-Party Influence: A Policy Framework To Address The Rise Of Third-Party Litigation Financing, Jack Lorkovic
Nebraska Law Review
It took a billionaire and a corporate bankruptcy for the once-overlooked third-party litigation financing (“TPLF”) to grab the public’s attention in 2016, when Hulk Hogan filed suit against Gawker Media for invasion of privacy. Hogan’s salacious affair became the backstory once the public learned PayPal founder and Silicon Valley titan Peter Thiel provided $10 million in litigation funding to back Hogan’s lawsuit as a revenge play against Gawker. Hogan secured a $140 million judgment against Gawker, pushing the company into bankruptcy. TPLF is a type of financial interest whereby a lender provides money or capital to a borrower in exchange …

North Korean Archaeology And Archaeological Interpretation In The Twentieth Century, Gabrielle E. Stoddard
North Korean Archaeology And Archaeological Interpretation In The Twentieth Century, Gabrielle E. Stoddard
Nebraska Anthropologist
This paper examines how political unrest in North Korea during the twentieth century affected Korean Archaeology. During the occupation of the Korean peninsula by the Empire of Japan during 1910–1945, Japanese scholars embarked on the study of archaeology in Korea. Japanese archaeologists used Korean archaeological data and materials to push a colonial viewpoint that Korea was a weak state that could not advance without oversight from a conquering nation. After Korea was liberated by the Soviet Union and the United States in 1945, it was divided into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North) and the Republic of Korea (South). …

Guidos And Grenades: Shaming Discourses In Mtv’S Jersey Shore, Mackenzie K. Mickavicz Ms., Aubree A. Herman
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
MTV’s Jersey Shore, launched in 2009, reached nearly 9 million viewers at the peak of its popularity. Inspired by the language used by the show’s male cast members to criticize a woman’s weight and appearance, such as “grenade” and “atomic bomb,” this study applies social congitive theory and reality television framework to analyze instances of shaming on Jersey Shore. Through a mixed-methods analysis, this study identifies the various forms of shaming depicted and explores how gender dynamics and character relationships affect these interactions. Findings reveal the most frequent forms of shaming, shame targets, and shame initiators as well as …

Comparisons Of Zooplankton Communities Before And After Chemical Renovation In Lake Ogallala, Nebraska, Theo Huber, Melissa Wuellner, Alexandria Keiler-Klein, Alexander D. Engel, Keith D. Koupal
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Rotenone is commonly used to remove undesirable fish species and support recreational fisheries. Lake Ogallala, a 263-ha tailwater reservoir located in western Nebraska, has had a history with rotenone use dating back to 1969. While past renovations of the reservoir have documented impacts on water quality, aquatic vegetation establishment, and benthic invertebrate and fish communities, zooplankton responses had not been studied. To evaluate potential effects, we compared zooplankton densities and community composition before and after the most recent renovation. Monthly samples were collected from April – September in 2023 (pre-renovation) and 2024 (post-renovation) using an 80-μm circular plankton net at …

From Prometheus To Pygmalion To Pandora: Teaching Greek Mythology With Frankenstein’S “Dark Brides”, Kyle William Bishop
From Prometheus To Pygmalion To Pandora: Teaching Greek Mythology With Frankenstein’S “Dark Brides”, Kyle William Bishop
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
As Mary Shelley unambiguously informs readers on the title page of her 1818 novel Frankenstein, her tale of Victor’s discovery of the secret of non-biological reproduction represents the Promethean myth, a morality tale warning against the usurpation of divine authority. In Shelley’s novel, Victor ultimately recognizes the dangerous path he has discovered, and he refuses to create a female companion for his hideous progeny, risking his own life to protect the world from a potential race of monsters. In the cinematic tradition, however, this unrealized “bride” often has been created, and these fantastic narratives realize the Pygmalion myth, that …
