The University’S Role In Prison Eduction, Delyte W. Morris
The University’S Role In Prison Eduction, Delyte W. Morris
Nebraska Law Review
For thirteen years Southern Illinois University has had an association with the Illinois State Penitentiary at Menard, Illinois, which has been rewarding and useful for both institutions. This article deals with the educational and rehabilitational aspects of this association. First, we look briefly at the historical development of education in prison programs. Second, we outline the specific growth of educational services by Southern Illinois University at Menard and the United States Penitentiary at Marion, Illinois. Third, we examine the influences of this growth on thinking, planning, research, and applications of prison education by the university locally and, by extension of …
International Concern With Crime And Corrections, Frank Loveland
International Concern With Crime And Corrections, Frank Loveland
Nebraska Law Review
International concern with crime and corrections is not a recent phenomenon. The first International Penal and Penitentiary Congress (IPPC) was held in London in 1872. When the United Nations was established, it was decided that its role should include a program for the prevention of crime and treatment of offenders. The IPPC at the time of its last Congress, held at The Hague in 1950, agreed to the transfer of its functions to the United Nations. The first of the quinquennial Congresses on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders was held in Geneva in 1955, the second …
The Emergence Of Correctional Law And The Awareness Of The Rights Of The Convicted, Eugene N. Barkin
The Emergence Of Correctional Law And The Awareness Of The Rights Of The Convicted, Eugene N. Barkin
Nebraska Law Review
The administration of criminal justice consists of four major areas: the arrest and charge of the commission of the offense; the trial and appeal; the disposition after a verdict of guilty; and finally the implementation of the judgment. Criminal law has traditionally been treated lightly by most law schools, practicing lawyers, and even the bench. And the most neglected area of this neglected field of law has related to the disposition of the offender's case; that is, sentencing and his rights thereafter. The purpose of this brief discussion is to promote awareness of the myriad of complex legal and human …

Plant Communities: Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Thanks to our rapid increase in population ,and the largely indiscriminate spread of urban, industrial, and transport facilities, the time is not far distant when land-use capabilities must receive much more attention than they have enjoyed. Natural, that is pre-settlement, vegetation, integrating as it did the manifold factors of environment, is un-excelled as a guide to potential land use.

Attorney Characteristics And Courtroom Results, Stuart S. Nagel, Felix V. Gagliano
Attorney Characteristics And Courtroom Results, Stuart S. Nagel, Felix V. Gagliano
Nebraska Law Review
A number of sociologists and legal scholars have studied the background characteristics of different types of lawyers. No researcher, however, seems to have yet analyzed the possible relationships between these general characteristics and courtroom results. It is the purpose of this paper to offer some findings relevant to those relationships. The basic theoretical position of this paper is that, in substantial samples of cases, the characteristics of the opposing attorneys are in general relatively trivial predictive or explanatory variables, especially in comparison with the predictive power of the correlations between the outcomes of cases and the factual elements within those …
Statistics In The Design And Analysis Of Physiology Experiments, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson
Statistics In The Design And Analysis Of Physiology Experiments, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Statistics should be considered as a tool by the animal experimenter in much the same way that a chemical analysis or a radiation counter is used as a tool. Too often statistics is considered as something magical which can restore order out of chaos and perhaps absolve the experimenter from mistakes in logic and procedure. It is true of course that the statistician through his knowledge of statistical procedures can sometimes help salvage some results from an otherwise hopelessly muddled experiment. One point must be made clear at the outset—the statistician is not a tool of the experimenter although statistics …
Roles Of Hypothalamus And Hypophysis In The Control Of The Estrous Cycle, A. V. Nalbandov
Roles Of Hypothalamus And Hypophysis In The Control Of The Estrous Cycle, A. V. Nalbandov
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The interrelation between the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary gland has been firmly established. It is not the intention of this report to review the literature on this extensive subject. Such reviews are available in "Advances in Neuroendocrinology" (Nalbandov, 2), and since the time of this publication many papers on this subject have appeared in current journals. For the purposes of the present discussion a few fundamental facts will be restated, but the major part of my presentation will deal with my own views of the research areas which should be of special interest to animal scientists concerned with phenomena …
The Relationship Of Certain Measures Of Creativity To Achievement In Selected Science And Related Coursework, Sheryl Oberg Snyder
The Relationship Of Certain Measures Of Creativity To Achievement In Selected Science And Related Coursework, Sheryl Oberg Snyder
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
The main question of this study concerns the relationship of creativity and achievement in science and related areas. More specifically, does the ingenious person, as determined by certain measures, excel in high school and college science, mathematics and science-related courses?Does the person with two- and three-dimensional visualization abilities, as determined by certain measures, likewise excel in these areas? Also, do the person with reasoning abilities similarly determined excel in these areas?
These questions raise a larger, overarching question predictability:Would knowledge of ingenuity, visualization ability, and reasoning ability aid in predicting achievement in science and related fields in high school and college? …

Bats: Their Public Health Importance And Control With Special Reference To Trinidad, Arthur M. Greenhall
Bats: Their Public Health Importance And Control With Special Reference To Trinidad, Arthur M. Greenhall
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)
This brief review of the public health importance and control of bats is oriented to Trinidad, where, during the past ten years I investigated their zoomedical importance (1). Trinidad is noted for Pawan's classic epidemiological studies of bat rabies (2,3) as well as its bat control program with which I have been associated since its inception in 1934 (4). Further, Trinidad has bat problems, in addition to rabies, which occur in other countries of the world. Although various methods of bat control have been developed in Trinidad, the field is virtually unexplored. Increasingly, bat control is a matter of paramount …
The Role Of Industry In Developing New Materials For Vertebrate Pest Control, G. Hermann, W. M. Zeck
The Role Of Industry In Developing New Materials For Vertebrate Pest Control, G. Hermann, W. M. Zeck
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)
In the first paper presented to you today by Dr. Spencer, an expert in the Animal Biology field and an official authority at the same time, you heard about the requirements imposed on a chemical in order to pass the different official hurdles before it ever will be accepted as a proven tool in wildlife management. Many characteristics have to be known and highly sophisticated tests have to be run. In many instances the governmental agency maintains its own screening, testing or analytical programs according to standard procedures. It would be impossible, however, for economic and time reasons to work …

Structure And Meaning In Endymion, G. Brian Sullivan
Structure And Meaning In Endymion, G. Brian Sullivan
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
My interpretation is allegorical; it traces a consecutive quest through stages of human development to the attainment of an ideal. My approach is not, however, in the social or moral sphere but on the level of psychology.
When Endymion is read as a myth of individuation, a structural unity, a symbolic cohesion, and a thematic sameness are apparent which give the poem the organic quality that contributes to what I have called the unitary experience of the work of art. This can be defined as the aesthetic perception of an artistic phenomenon, produced consciously or unconsciously by the author with …

Terminating A Marriage In Nebraska, Marvin D. Keller
Terminating A Marriage In Nebraska, Marvin D. Keller
Nebraska Law Review
As the basic unit in society, the family has long been the subject of considerable legal attention. Such attention has been primarily concerned with the procedures for establishing and dissolving the marital status. Because of a greatly increased divorce rate and a more complete understanding about the causes of marital breakup, increasing criticism is being directed toward the failure of statutory divorce provisions to adapt to the changing attitudes of society. An example of this is Nebraska, where except for the enforcement of support, the law of divorce remains basically the same as it was in 1856. It is the …

On Science And Social Science, Robert Katz
On Science And Social Science, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
There are many definitions of science, and these are commonly based on literary and social usage rather than on the technical problem of distinguishing different areas of scholarship. To evolve an adequate definition we shall attempt to extract common elements from physics, biology, chemistry, geology, and astronomy, from those fields which are commonly called sciences. Any acceptable definition of science must be equally applicable to all of these, to all the natural sciences. To speak in the usual metaphor, we shall attempt a "scientific" definition of science.
Negro College Students' Participation In Sit-Ins, Ruth Searles, J. Allen Williams Jr.
Negro College Students' Participation In Sit-Ins, Ruth Searles, J. Allen Williams Jr.
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Socioeconomic and legal changes in the position of southern Negroes have been accompanied by a changing pattern of race relations and a new attitude on the part of Negro leaders. Data from a closed-answer questionnaire administered to students in three Negro colleges in North Carolina support the hypothesis that sit-in protests are less indicative of social alienation among Negroes than of their identification with or positive reference to the white middle class.

"Chronometricals And Horologicals”: The Key To A Basic Theme In The Fiction Of Herman Melville, James Llewellyn Thorson
"Chronometricals And Horologicals”: The Key To A Basic Theme In The Fiction Of Herman Melville, James Llewellyn Thorson
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
My aim is to study several of Melville’s major works of fiction in the light a pamphlet called “Chronometricals and Horologicals”, which purports to be by one Plotinus Plinlimmon in Melville’s novel Pierre: or The Ambiguities. In my view of Melville’s works, this pamphlet is as near a statement of the author’s philosophy (as dramatized in his works) as can be formulated. I do not maintain that a study of the relationship of the pamphlet to the works will reveal the whole “truth” about the “meaning” of Melville’s fiction, but I do think that it will show a significant …
The Andromache Of Euripides, Keith M. Aldrich
The Andromache Of Euripides, Keith M. Aldrich
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
There seems now to be widespread agreement in the otherwise disputatious world of letters that literary criticism is one of the most difficult and one of the least generally successful of all undertakings. 1 As a science it is (and has always been) constantly frustrated by the absence of principles and applicable theories. As a service it has been regularly ignored. As an art it has usually found recognition only in disguise. The reasons underlying this undistinguished record are many: ignorance, shortsightedness, bigotry-all such imperfections on the part of the critics have contributed their share; they, with the passage of …
A Fugitive And Gracious Light: The Relation Of Joseph Joubert To Matthew Arnold's Thought, G. Thomas Fairclough
A Fugitive And Gracious Light: The Relation Of Joseph Joubert To Matthew Arnold's Thought, G. Thomas Fairclough
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Of the many literary and critical influences which combined to mold the thought and achievement of Matthew Arnold, few are more pronounced or more pervasive than those emanating from nineteenth-century France. French writers of Arnold's own time and of that immediately preceding were to him masters and companions whose aid he fully and frequently acknowledged.
Yet the number of scholarly studies devoted to Arnold's French sympathies are few. The only book-length study in existence is Iris Esther Sells's Matthew Arnold and France: the Poet (New York, 1935). As the title indicates, this book confines itself to an investigation of Arnold's …
Vaughan's The World: The Pattern Of Meaning And The Tradition, Paul A. Olson
Vaughan's The World: The Pattern Of Meaning And The Tradition, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Vaughan's The World ends with an epigraph from I John 2:16-17 which appears to say little about the work which it is supposed to illuminate: "All that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the Eys, and the pride of life, is not of the father but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lusts thereof, but he that doth the will of God abideth for ever."'
Though the poem begins and ends with its brilliant perceptions of the sweep of eternity, its middle section seems to bog down in a …

Tones And Intervals Of Hindu Classical Music, Donald A. Lentz
Tones And Intervals Of Hindu Classical Music, Donald A. Lentz
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
ART IS ALL ENDURING and limitless, and defies positive, unvariable classification. No attempt is being made in this book to compare artistic, subjective or emotional factors. Only the objective elements, techniques and procedures of music that are tangible and definite are being compared and classified. Western music, having reached a plateau under the present harmonic system, is projecting into new channels for textural inspiration. Composers have exploited the present system, using existing intervals in every conceivable manner under existing tonal and atonal theories. Devices such as smaller intervals (example: tempered quarter tones), electronic combinations, aleatonic principles, etc. are being dealt …
