4. The Status Of Test Validation Research, Lyle F. Schoenfeldt

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

More than any other area, validation research is where the "rubber meets the road" in test construction and test usage. The very term validation implies the assessment or measurement of individuals and the relationship of this assessment to some criterion of performance. The success of a test validation effort, or the lack thereof, has implications for the value of the assessment and for the utility of the procedures.

In today's environment, whether the validation is intended for employee selection, educational decisions, or personal counseling, there is an increasing probability that the outcomes of research will have legal implications. In the …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

Whenever research is launched under a new paradigm for studying an old set of mental phenomena, researchers joining the new armada of explorers hope, at best, to discover new uncharted mental territories and, at worst, to provide new mental maps of previously charted territories that amend errors of the old maps. This has been I believe, the experience of cognitive psychologists studying mental abilities. Although they may not have revolutionized our map of the mind (yet), neither have they left the old maps standing. What is critical is that at least the flaws and incompleteness’s of the new methods are …

Cognitive Growth Through Expressive Writing All That Jazz, Christopher C. Burnham Jan 1984

Cognitive Growth Through Expressive Writing All That Jazz, Christopher C. Burnham

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

I want to develop jazz as a metaphor for growth. Jazz, generally considered, signals incongruity in music. Something happens where it was not originally to happen or where nothing was scheduled to happen-and nobody minds. In fact, the surprise-the incongruity-is the energy of jazz. In more formal terms, the creative impulse of the musician assumes power. He or she improvises between set notes, or in a void the composer leaves for such improvisational purposes. The musician is free to play, literally and figuratively. Each influences the other; they enlarge each other and expand potentialities.

Section V: Student Development: Intellectual Growth And Writing, Michael Davis Jan 1984

Section V: Student Development: Intellectual Growth And Writing, Michael Davis

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

A major tradition of higher education is excellence in written expression. In part, the tradition continues because many scholars are excellent writers and because writing shapes and clarifies our understanding of our own thoughts and actions. Students are urged to emulate quality writing with the expectation that quality thinking will be fostered. We do understand that the use of language is an instrument of thinking (Bruner, 1966) and that there is an interplay between writing and thinking (Vygotsky, 1962). The developmental theories of Jean Piaget (1968), Lawrence Kohlberg (1981), and William Perry (1981), suggest that the quality of writing may …

Heg84-193 "Fighting Fair" In Marriage, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1984

Heg84-193 "Fighting Fair" In Marriage, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide presents steps to follow to recognize and resolve marital conflicts through negotiation and finding mutually agreeable alternatives.

Do you ever use extreme or irrational tactics to gain your point (slamming doors, stomping around)?

Do you sometimes hurt your spouse in order to have the last word (sarcasm, name-calling)?

Do you store up grudges and use them to "hit" your partner over the head at a later time (revenge)?

Is your attitude "If I don't get what I want, I will quit cooperating?"

Do you continually expect others to do things the "right way" (your way)?

If you answered …

G84-731 Financing Correctional Services In Nebraska (Revised December 1992), A.L. (Roy) Frederick Jan 1984

G84-731 Financing Correctional Services In Nebraska (Revised December 1992), A.L. (Roy) Frederick

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This is one of a series of NebGuides on financing state and local government. This publication focuses on correctional services.

Correctional services include confinement and correction of adults and juveniles convicted of offenses against the law plus probation and parole activities. In Nebraska, both local (mostly county) governments and state government, through the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, provide such services. The federal government also maintains confinement and correctional facilities for those convicted of federal crimes, but no such facility is located in Nebraska. Sometimes, however, the federal government pays the state, or even counties, to assume custody of federal …

Heg84-192 Analyzing Color In Your Wardrobe, Thelma Thompson Jan 1984

Heg84-192 Analyzing Color In Your Wardrobe, Thelma Thompson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Color is a powerful design element in our environment and our wardrobes. Although color is only one facet of design, it is usually the one that first attracts us to clothing. To learn how to use color, we need to understand the meaning of such terms as hue, value and intensity, and how to combine colors in pleasing harmonies.

This NebGuide discusses the importance of color in your wardrobe and offers suggestions on how to select colors to complement your personal coloring.

Selected References On Walking, Crossing Streets, And Choosing Pedestrian Routes, Michael R. Hill Jan 1984

Selected References On Walking, Crossing Streets, And Choosing Pedestrian Routes, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Studies on the behavior and experiences of pedestrians have continued unabated since the first major bibliography on the subject, was compiled by Dietrich Garbrecht (1971a). Numerous additions were noted in a supplement by this author (Hill, 1976a). The present bibliography summarizes and updates these earlier works. Further, it includes several related references from the environmental design research literature which significantly illuminate the general problem of understanding the pedestrian environment. References on route choice by automobile drivers have specifically been included to encourage comparisons between vehicular and pedestrian transportation modes.

This bibliography is presented without annotations. However, those seeking a summary …

Neuropsychological Performance Of Sexual Assaulters And Pedophiles, Monte L. Scott, James K. Cole, Stephen E. Mckay, Charles J. Golden, Kenneth R. Liggett Jan 1984

Neuropsychological Performance Of Sexual Assaulters And Pedophiles, Monte L. Scott, James K. Cole, Stephen E. Mckay, Charles J. Golden, Kenneth R. Liggett

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Persons who had been arrested for sexual assault were administered the Luria- Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery and the results compared to a group of normal controls. The sexual assaulters performed significantly worse on 7 of the 14 scales of the battery. The data were then broken down into three groups: (1) those who had forcibly assaulted postpubescent victims, (2) those subjects who had sexually molested a prepubeseent child, and (3) normal controls. A discriminant analysis correctly classified 68% of the subjects on the basis of their neuropsychological performance alone.

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill Jan 1984

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Visual studies in the social sciences have recently begun to enjoy increased popularity. Like the interdisciplinary excitement which earlier linked. the behavioral and social sciences to problems in environmental design, this event points to yet greater potential for collaboration between the social sciences, on the one hand, and the design disciplines, on the other. Whereas the interdisciplinary environmental design movement tended to focus specifically on the relationship between humans and the built urban environment (although some landscape architects properly extended their investigations to rural and natural environments), the intersection of visual sociology and the sociology of the visual arts encompasses …

Stalking The Urban Pedestrian: A Comparison Of Questionnaire And Tracking Methodologies For Behavioral Mapping In Large-Scale Environments, Michael R. Hill Jan 1984

Stalking The Urban Pedestrian: A Comparison Of Questionnaire And Tracking Methodologies For Behavioral Mapping In Large-Scale Environments, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Behavioral mapping in unrestricted, outdoor environments raises methodological challenges which have led several environmental behavior researchers to employ questionnaires rather than behavioral observation as the usual method of data collection. This study provides an empirically-grounded comparison of both techniques for recovering data on routes selected by pedestrians as they engage in unrestricted travel from place to place in an urban environment. Mid-trip interception tracking provides expensive but accurate data on partial trips whereas questionnaires provide more easily obtainable data on complete trips but with a lesser degree of accuracy. The reduced level of accuracy for questionnaire data is mild, however, …

Walking, Crossing Streets And Choosing Pedestrian Routes: A Survey Of Recent Insights From The Social/Behavioral Sciences, Michael R. Hill Jan 1984

Walking, Crossing Streets And Choosing Pedestrian Routes: A Survey Of Recent Insights From The Social/Behavioral Sciences, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Walking at first appears to be a relatively simple, mundane behavior that should pose no great puzzle for the diligent researcher in the social and behavioral sciences. The review presented here of recent studies, however, demonstrates that the behavior and experiences of ordinary pedestrians are filled with opportunities for empirical investigation and intricate theory building. But, why bring these studies together for synthesis in this volume? I suggest here that there are, in fact, several reasons that argue in favor of a timely focus on the apparently simple behavior of the pedestrian.

First, the deceptive simplicity of the pedestrian experience …

Marivaux's Jeu De L'Amour Et "De La Raison", Thomas M. Carr Jr. Jan 1984

Marivaux's Jeu De L'Amour Et "De La Raison", Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

At a crucial point in the third act of Le Jeu de l'amour et du hasard, Silvia declares that she requires a battle in Dorante between love and reason: "je veux un combat entre I'amour et la raison," a struggle her brother Mario suggests will be to the death. In fact, the work's entire action, not just the last act, can playfully be renamed Le Jeu de l'amour et "de la raison," and while it is possible to read Dorante's eventual proposal of marriage as the defeat of reason, In a very real sense such an evaluation must be …

In the medical profession, the impact of technology on our society has been startling, and it is threatening to outrun our ability to respond through legal institutions to the profound questions raised by the New Medicine. In answering these new questions of life and death we are engaged in the process of defining the very essence of our society. This issue of the Nebraska Law Review contains a series of articles from the Medical Jurisprudence Symposium.
