The Confinement Of Juveniles In Nebraska Jails And Lockups, Lorie A. Fridell, Vincent J. Webb Jan 1987

The Confinement Of Juveniles In Nebraska Jails And Lockups, Lorie A. Fridell, Vincent J. Webb

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Using adult jails and lockups for confining youths is a major issue in juvenile justice. Proponents of removing children from these facilities are concerned with the conditions of confinement, the .ate of suicide among youths held in adult facilities, the excessive use of secure confinement for youths, and the legal liability of jurisdictions that hold juveniles in adult facilities. Nebraska has made significant progress in reducing the number of youths confined in adult jails and lockups, but has yet to pass legislation or develop programs and facilities to complete the task. Policy options for reducing the use of secure confinement …

1. Introduction: The Implications Of Cognitive Psychology For Testing, Royce R. Ronning, Jane C. Conoley, John G. Glover

The Influence of Cognitive Psychology on Testing

The 1985 Buros-Nebraska Symposium was developed to address the broad issue of the influence of cognitive psychology on testing and measurement. In the planning process, four topics were formulated that we asked contributors to address. The following four issues provided the focus for the Symposium and hence for the present volume. We explore:

1. Cognitive psychology as a basis for questioning some of our assumptions about the nature of mental abilities;
2. The influence of cognitive psychology on test development;
3. Cognitive psychology influences on test validity;
4. Cognitive psychology as a means to provide a linkage between testing and …

The Manuscript Of Daniel Deronda: A Change In Sequence?, Graham Handley Jan 1987

The Manuscript Of Daniel Deronda: A Change In Sequence?, Graham Handley

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The examination of a great writer's manuscript carries its own fascinations and frustrations, for eyes and mind are intent on discovery, with might-have-been replacing is at the blink of an eyelid. Deletions hide something of significance, single-word alterations are evidence of a change of mind (or of heart), and commonplaces are elevated by a single deft stroke or slant into transcendent maxims or inscrutable morality. Re-shaped sentences take on a greater profundity of thought, while paragraphs collated with the first printing or a later corrected one, show either the wisdom of reflection or the author's obstinacy, depending on the reader's …

In The Land Of Th Indian Woslata: Plains Indian Influences On Reservation Whites, Timothy J. Kloberdanz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

If one climbs the high grassy hill that overlooks the town of Fort Yates on the Standing Rock Reservation in south-central North Dakota, the scene that gradually unfolds is an engaging one. Fort Yates is bordered on practically all sides by the expansive waters of Lake Oahe. Except for the fact that the community resembles a veritable island, it looks much like other Great Plains towns, with an assortment of generously spaced old and new structures. From the top of the hill to the north, one can sec for miles across the lake and the Missouri River to the rolling …

The Need For Classroom Research, K. Patricia Cross Jan 1987

The Need For Classroom Research, K. Patricia Cross

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The single most important question in higher education for the rest of this decade will be, I think-What can and should be done to improve the quality of undergraduate education?

The reports that constitute the higher educational reform movement of the 1980s have taken as their major mission the improvement of undergraduate education. Most of the recommendations have to do with what is taught, i.e. the curriculum. Some seem to think that is where the problem lies-that students don't learn what they should learn in college. I am inclined to think, however, that how students are taught is even more …

Testing Sociobiological Hypotheses Ethnographically, Patricia Draper Jan 1987

Testing Sociobiological Hypotheses Ethnographically, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Satisfactory tests of sociobiological theory using data on humans suffer from many problems, many of which are cogently argued by Kitcher. Other obstacles derive from the fact that cultural anthropology itself is undergoing a paradigm shift, in which people are no longer considered to be influenced by the normative environment with a high degree of predictability. Information about human behavior guided by this new set of assumptions is far more likely to yield the type of data necessary to test sociobiological ideas. Once the construct of culture is abandoned (or at least not assumed to have much power for predicting …

Heg87-223 Understanding Grief And Loss, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1987

Heg87-223 Understanding Grief And Loss, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This guide defines loss, offers guidelines for dealing with grief and loss, presents psychological and emotional responses to loss, and describes ways to help people deal with bereavement.

Loss is defined as a "separation from, a detachment from something or someone of value." The magnitude of the loss and its meaning and value to the individual affects the intensity of a person's response. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to predict how any one person will respond to a particular loss. But it always causes some change in perception of one's self or lifestyle and some type of adaptation or adjustment …

Final Offer Arbitration: Time For Serious Consideration By The Courts, Charles W. Adams Jan 1987

Final Offer Arbitration: Time For Serious Consideration By The Courts, Charles W. Adams

Nebraska Law Review

This article examines final offer arbitration and recommends its use in court-annexed arbitration programs, which are now operating or being considered in a growing number of federal and state courts. The first portion of the article analyzes the process of the settlement of lawsuits and gives some reasons why settlements are not always reached expeditiously. Next, the article analyzes the final offer arbitration process and shows how it may promote settlement. The last portion of the article examines empirical data on the efficacy of final offer arbitration in promoting settlement. The empirical data comes from two sources: laboratory experiments and …

Pubertal Status And Psychosocial Development: Findings From The Early Adolescence Study, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen Jan 1987

Pubertal Status And Psychosocial Development: Findings From The Early Adolescence Study, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Beginning in 1978, we have conducted a longitudinal study of early adolescent development. A major objective of this research has been to examine the influence of pubertal changes on other aspects of development during this period. With regard to pubertal effects we wished to address two major questions. First, what aspects of behavior seem to be affected by pubertal development? (In other words, are pubertal effects pervasive or relatively circumscribed, and if they are circumscribed, which aspects of behavior are involved?) Second, how does pubertal change exert an influence--does it operate directly on specific aspects of behavior and performance (for …

'Asking Directions’ And Pedestrian Wayfinding, Michael R. Hill Jan 1987

'Asking Directions’ And Pedestrian Wayfinding, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper reports a study of the social ecology and systemic aspects of "asking for directions" in an urban area. Interviews were conducted with 100 randomly selected pedestrians at spatially stratified locations representing a variety of urban environments in Lincoln, Nebraska. The interviewer, posing as a "lost" pedestrian, asked respondents to give directions to local landmarks and then unobtrusively recorded their responses on a concealed tape recorder. Respondents generally provided accurate, distance-conserving directions with low levels of spatial complexity. Responses were friendly and often tailored to the unique environmental attributes characterizing each location. An outline of the process whereby a …

Novels, Thought Experiments, And Humanist Sociology In The Classroom: Mari Sandoz And Capital City, Michael R. Hill Jan 1987

Novels, Thought Experiments, And Humanist Sociology In The Classroom: Mari Sandoz And Capital City, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Based upon teaching Mari Sandoz' allegorical novel, Capital City, as part of Introduction to Sociology for three semesters, this report outlines the characteristics of sociologically useful novels from a humanist perspective. A key characteristic is the extent to which novelists not only conduct thought experiments but also stimulate student thinking and research. The pedagogical dimensions of thought experiments are explicated and the positive outcomes of using a novel-and group study projects based on a novel-are reported.

The Sociology And Experiences Of Pedestrians, Michael R. Hill Jan 1987

The Sociology And Experiences Of Pedestrians, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper introduces the sociological and experiential studies included in this special issue of Man-Environment Systems. Sociological and experiential perspectives and their interconnections are briefly explored. A sociology of sociology perspective is adopted and argues that architects, planners, engineers and other managers of vested, status guo interests fail to systematically incorporate the burgeoning social scientific work on pedestrianism due to the inherent and unavoidable political character of walking.
