Review Of G.H. Lewes: A Life, Beryl Gray, Rosemary Ashton Jan 1991

Review Of G.H. Lewes: A Life, Beryl Gray, Rosemary Ashton

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

For a very long time, George Henry Lewes's reputation has centred on the fact that, for the last 25 years of his life, he was George Eliot's partner. Not a vast number of people have cared to know very much about him beyond an idea, perhaps, that he was a rather freewheeling journalist who produced a Life of Goethe, and that he was free-thinking and - at least until he took up with George Eliot - somewhat free-living. It is gratifying, therefore, that this highly intelligent, quick and versatile, immensely fair-minded man who loved science as much as he loved …

Review Of George Eliot (Marian Evans): A Literary Life, Kerry Mcsweeney Jan 1991

Review Of George Eliot (Marian Evans): A Literary Life, Kerry Mcsweeney

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Many publishers run series of 'introductions' to English literature - handy roll-calls of the canon, beginning with Chaucer and ending with Virginia Woolf or thereabouts - and inevitably George Eliot has to be there. One is, of course, glad for the small army of academics for whom gainful employment is thus provided, but the question naturally arises whether so many books covering the same ground serve any useful purpose.

In Professor McSweeney's case the answer is yes. His book is rewarding because he is sufficiently master of his subject to make it his own. He forms his own judgements, chooses …

Review Of Beyond The Frontier: Writers, Western Regionalism And A Sense Of Place, Barbara L. Imig Jan 1991

Review Of Beyond The Frontier: Writers, Western Regionalism And A Sense Of Place, Barbara L. Imig

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Rather than embarking upon a quest for the ever-illusionary "new beginning" in a "new land," Harold P. Simonson in Beyond the Frontier: Writers, Western Regionalism and a Sense of Place argues that the frontier metaphor has synthesized into a sense of place and that place is "home."

Review Of The Two Psychiatries: The Transformation Of Psychiatric Work In Saskatchewan, 1905-1984, Will Spaulding Jan 1991

Review Of The Two Psychiatries: The Transformation Of Psychiatric Work In Saskatchewan, 1905-1984, Will Spaulding

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Great Plains region has a history of producing innovations in mental health. This book, an historical account and sociological analysis of the evolution of the Saskatchewan public mental health system, describes one Great Plains phenomenon that at times during this century has been remarkably progressive. The book began as the author's dissertation in the sociology of health care and was made possible by his fortuitous access to confidential government archives, primarily in the form of interoffice correspondence, in addition to the public historical record. Dickenson evaluates several hypotheses generated by sociologies of labor and professions. The brief and succinct …

Annual Report 1990 Jan 1991

Annual Report 1990

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The year opened, as it always does, with the least exciting event - the Annual General Meeting. All four officers were re-elected and we also re-elected for a further three year term our supportive and generous President Jonathan Ouvry.

The next event was much more exciting. In April Gabriel Woolf made his 21st annual visit to Warwickshire to present the ever popular programme of Readings from the novels. 'Enter the Aunts' proved to be one of the most popular he has ever done, and his own sense of humour and sensitivity of selection made the most of those wonderful aunts, …

Section I: Faculty Development: Past, Present, Future

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

If the faculty development enterprise is to maintain its health and vigor through this decade and into the next century, its practitioners and caretakers must not only address present needs, but also prepare for the future-in part by studying the past. Tunnel vision and near-sightedness spell doom to a field whose success depends so heavily upon its ability to quickly and effectively meet the changing needs of the professoriate. Thus, as faculty development professionals we are called upon not only to serve as counselors and facilitators, but also as historians and visionaries. We must study our brief, but rich, history …

Introduction: Centennial Showcase Of Law College Faculty, Harvey Perlman Jan 1991

Introduction: Centennial Showcase Of Law College Faculty, Harvey Perlman

Nebraska Law Review

During 1991 the University of Nebraska College of Law celebrates its centennial year, recognizing the action in 1891 of the university's Board of Regents that acquired the privately owned Central Law School and established the college as part of the University of Nebraska. The early-twentieth-century volumes of the college’s Nebraska Law Review were almost exclusively the work of the college's faculty. Each of the eight issues of the first two volumes contained a single article written by a member of the faculty. To celebrate the centennial, the Review is returning to its initial tradition—the lead articles in this issue and …

Wrongful Pregnancy Actions: Should Courts Allow Recovery For Childrearing Expenses?—Burke V. Rivo, 406 Mass. 764, 551 N.E.2d 1 (1990), Michael C. Pallesen

Nebraska Law Review

"Wrongful pregnancy" actions are a type of medical malpractice involving a physician's negligent performance of a sterilization procedure. The majority of courts addressing wrongful pregnancy claims have held that the plaintiffs have a valid cause of action and have awarded traditional tort remedies of general and special damages relating to actual medical services incident to the birth and delivery—but not the costs of raising the child. Controversy in recent cases has been over awarding childrearing costs. Several courts have departed from the majority and awarded these damages; Burke v. Rivo is the latest. The Burke court held that in addition …

1. Computer-Assisted Personal Ity Test Interpretation: The Dawn Of Discovery, Douglas N. Jackson Jan 1991

1. Computer-Assisted Personal Ity Test Interpretation: The Dawn Of Discovery, Douglas N. Jackson

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

My aim in this chapter is to outline some of the substantive and psychometric bases on which we can build a science of assessment that takes advantage of the enormous potential inherent in the digital computer and in artificial intelligence. Some of these foundations are within the traditions of classical assessment. But others represent urgently needed areas of explication and research.

It is my view, in the tradition of Cronbach (1954), that developers of computer software for testing should listen to what psychometricians say, and, as well, psychometricians should be sensitive to new research ideas waiting to be solved that …

7. Implementation Decisions In Designing Computer-Based Instructional Testing Programs, John V. Noonan, Paul D. Sarvela Jan 1991

7. Implementation Decisions In Designing Computer-Based Instructional Testing Programs, John V. Noonan, Paul D. Sarvela

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

From preschool to graduate school, computer-based instruction (CBI) has become an increasingly common event in today's education and training community. The interactive characteristics of CBI and its ability to simulate advanced concepts and operations, such as patient management simulations for medical students (Whiteside & Whiteside, 1987/88) or the maneuvering of a jet airplane (Conkright, 1982), make CBI an attractive new instructional delivery system for educators working in many different fields .

Because of these qualities , the computer has tremendous potential in educational and psychological measurement. For example, Millman & Arter (1984) describe how the computer aids in maintaining test-item …

Maize Production Impacts On Groundwater Quality, James S. Schepers, M.G. Moravek, E.E. Alberts, K.D. Frank Jan 1991

Maize Production Impacts On Groundwater Quality, James S. Schepers, M.G. Moravek, E.E. Alberts, K.D. Frank

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The cumulative effects of management pratices on nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) leaching and groundwater quality are frequently difficult to document because of the time required for expression and the diversity of interacting process involved. This work reports results of a N and water management program initiated by the Central Platte Natural Resource District (CPNRD) in Nebraska. Cultural pratices recommended by the CPNRD and reported by producers for the 1988 growing season, representing approximately 3900 fields and fertilizer N application rates. Groundwater NO3-N concentrations were positively correlated with ressidual N in the surface 0.9 m of soil prior to the growing season, reflecting …

Creativity And Innovation In An Organized Anarchy, Joan Giesecke Jan 1991

Creativity And Innovation In An Organized Anarchy, Joan Giesecke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Organizations can respond to change in their environments in a variety of planned and unplanned ways. In complex organizations, when the environment is unstable, managers need to examine their assumptions about how organizations function in order to develop effective strategies for introducing creativity and change. This essay reviews the assumptions behind theories of organizational decision making, explores how those assumptions affect how managers decide strategies for introducing change, and offers some ideas on how to introduce creativity into organizations that face ambiguous internal and external environments.

Introduction Of Psychology And Aging: Nebraska Symposium On Motivation 1991, Theo Sonderegger Jan 1991

Introduction Of Psychology And Aging: Nebraska Symposium On Motivation 1991, Theo Sonderegger

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Through the years, the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation has reflected topics of current interest to psychologists. This year is no exception: "psychology and aging" is a subject of concern to all readers no matter what their particular psychological specialties happen to be. All of us-if we are lucky, hope that we will experience the aging process and will join (or continue our membership in) the ever increasing population of the elderly. The quantity of research in the area is growing rapidly; new ideas and theories about the aging process are far from complete and are still emerging-as will be seen …

Trait Psychology Comes Of Age, Paul T. Costa Jr., Robert Mccrae Jan 1991

Trait Psychology Comes Of Age, Paul T. Costa Jr., Robert Mccrae

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

It is sometimes thought that the relation between research on aging and the basic sciences is one-sided: gerontologists take the methods and theories of their specialty and apply them to aging populations, but they rarely initiate theories or report findings that could reshape the basic disciplines themselves. Whatever the truth of this perception in general, it is completely false with regard to the psychology of personality. When Eichorn, Clausen, Haan, Honzik, and Mussen (1981) published their summary of the Berkeley longitudinal studies, Sears and Sears (1982) heralded it as "probably the most important unified research contribution to adult social and …

Universals, Necessities, And Social Contexts, David Moshman Jan 1991

Universals, Necessities, And Social Contexts, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Elbers* does an excellent job of integrating, analyzing, and extending recent theoretical and empirical work concerning the relation of learning and development. The purpose of this commentary is to challenge Elbers to address the difficult question of universal sequences in human development. In order to focus the issue, a specific sequence in the development of logical reasoning is proposed.

Roscoe Pound And Academic Community On The Great Plains: The Interactional Origins Of American Sociological Jurisprudence At The University Of Nebraska, 1900-1907, Michael R. Hill Jan 1991

Roscoe Pound And Academic Community On The Great Plains: The Interactional Origins Of American Sociological Jurisprudence At The University Of Nebraska, 1900-1907, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The turn-of-the-century academic community at the University of Nebraska differed sharply from today's highly stratified, bureaucratized, multiversity setting. The campus, the student body, and the instructional staff were, of course, considerably smaller in number than now. But, beyond this obvious demographic observation, there was a pioneering spirit and a sense of scholarly community that fostered remarkable intellectual creativity. In particular, the Nebraska campus provided the collegial setting from which Roscoe Pound's American version of sociological jurisprudence sprang forth in a resounding critique of the U.S. legal establishment at the 1906 meetings of the American Bar Association (cf., Pound 1906; Harding …

Review Of The Role And Nature Of The Doctoral Dissertation, By The Council Of Graduate Schools, Michael R. Hill Jan 1991

Review Of The Role And Nature Of The Doctoral Dissertation, By The Council Of Graduate Schools, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This brief, impressively sponsored report overflows with Machiavellian subtexts, bureaucratic rationalizations, and mendacious platitudes. While concluding that the doctoral dissertation "defines the essence of the PhD degree" (p. 31), the overall message is that doctoral dissertations have become all things to all disciplines and that-further-this diversity of options is legitimate and virtually inexorable. The shock to my academic sensibilities on reading this official policy statement of the Council of Graduate Schools is the realization (once again) that some of our colleagues in several of the engineering, natural, and physical sciences have thoroughly subverted the doctoral process, turning it into a …
