Teaching With Style: The Integration Of Teaching And Learning Styles In The Classroom, Anthony F. Grasha Jan 1996

Teaching With Style: The Integration Of Teaching And Learning Styles In The Classroom, Anthony F. Grasha

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Teaching with style demands that instructors explore "Who I am as a teacher?" and "What do I want to become?" The integrated model provides one vehicle for doing so. The payoff is that we move away from blindly teaching as we were taught or simply repeating how we taught the course the last time. Instead. instructional strategies become grounded in a conceptual base of knowledge about teaching and learning styles. Like scholarly methods in our disciplines, instructional strategies then begin to serve broader philosophical, theoretical, and conceptual goals.

Students' Reactions To Performance-Based Versus Traditional Objective Assessment, Anthony L. Truog Jan 1996

Students' Reactions To Performance-Based Versus Traditional Objective Assessment, Anthony L. Truog

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

In summary, the struggle to obtain more performance-based evaluation goes on. The results to date support the idea that more student involvement is better. The issue of cost-benefit analysis must be continually addressed, while not losing either the vision to make assessment intrinsic to the learning process, nor the efficiency of objective detachment. The really exciting aspect will be the personal growth of the students and their instructor.

Transactional Analysis Of The Creative Process, Donna Glee Williams Jan 1996

Transactional Analysis Of The Creative Process, Donna Glee Williams

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Teachers of the creative process understand intuitively that different types of students need different types of teaching. The art students who splash paint with abandon over miles of canvas but have no interest in craftsmanship or self-evaluation need a different sort of intervention than the young artists who are so bullied by their own self-criticism that they can hardly bear to make a mark. The music students who by dint of excessive practice produce music-box accuracy--completely without fire--need a different sort of help than their sloppy but passionate colleagues. Our task as instructors is to understand our students’ needs and …

A Binding Tie: Supportive Communication Of Family Kinkeepers, Margaret S. Leach, Dawn O. Braithwaite Jan 1996

A Binding Tie: Supportive Communication Of Family Kinkeepers, Margaret S. Leach, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Families are an important source of social support, and little scholarship exists regarding how family members stay in touch and provide support for one another. Kinkeepers are said to provide support and keep family members informed about one another, yet there has been little research on who family kinkeepers are and how they communicate and enact this role. Two studies were undertaken. The first study used surveys to provide demographic data on kinkeepers and to ascertain information on their activities. The second study used diaries and interviews to document the activities of a set of kinkeepers and to describe outcomes …

G97-1322 High Risk Youth, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1996

G97-1322 High Risk Youth, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide defines the relationship between adolescence and high risk behaviors, helps parent and adolescent identify external and internal assets and suggests parent strategies for promoting and increasing those assets.

American youth today are often considered to be in a state of crisis. Approximately half of all adolescents are at moderate to high risk of engaging in one or more self-destructive behaviors, including unsafe sex, teenage pregnancy and childbearing; drug and alcohol abuse; under achievement, failure, or dropping out of school; and delinquent or criminal behaviors. Many of these problem behaviors are interrelated. Some of these behaviors are related to …

Maori Weaving: The Intertwining Of Spirit, Action And Metaphor, Suzanne Mac Aulay, Kura Te Waru-Rewiri Jan 1996

Maori Weaving: The Intertwining Of Spirit, Action And Metaphor, Suzanne Mac Aulay, Kura Te Waru-Rewiri

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Kura Te Waru-Rewiri and I stand positioned here like the two weaving sticks, turuturu, which are thrust into the ground to support Maori weaving as it emerges from repeated separations, twists, insertions, and alignments. Our words crisscross and overlap to form a rich verbal weaving embellished with our experience and expanded through our respective interpretations.

Our discussion examines Maori textiles in Aotearoa/New Zealand as elements in a continuum of sacred experience unbounded by the temporal and spatial limitations of a particular ceremony. The fusion of creative practice, ritual action and ceremonial presence in weaving Maori cloaks, kakahu, …

Naming And Meaning: Ritual Textiles Of The Ihan Of Sarawak, Traude Gavin Jan 1996

Naming And Meaning: Ritual Textiles Of The Ihan Of Sarawak, Traude Gavin

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In conjunction with the exhibition of Iban ritual textiles I curated at the Fowler Museum of Cultural History in Los Angeles in 1996, I gave a number of lectures based on my field research. The present paper will address some of the questions that were raised by the audience in Los Angeles. All these question are characteristic of the manner in which members of a Western, literate society tend to approach Iban cloth patterns.

This paper is divided into several parts. I begin with a brief background on the Iban people and on the ritual and social function of Iban …

Visual Search For Natural Grains In Pigeons (Columba Livia) : Search Images And Selective Attention, Cynthia M. Langley, Donald A. Riley, Alan B. Bond, Namni Goel Jan 1996

Visual Search For Natural Grains In Pigeons (Columba Livia) : Search Images And Selective Attention, Cynthia M. Langley, Donald A. Riley, Alan B. Bond, Namni Goel

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

The experiments reported here were designed to test the suggestion of many researchers that selective attention to visual features of a prey can account for search-image effects. In 3 experiments pigeons ate wheat and vetch grains presented on multicolored and gray gravel trays. In Experiment 1 search-image effects were evident when grains were cryptic but not when they were conspicuous. Experiment 2 demonstrated that search images can be activated when the grains encountered are either cryptic or conspicuous but that search images affect search performance only when the grains are cryptic. Experiment 3 demonstrated that search images are short-term in …

University Of Adelaide, Seventeenth Australasian Victorlian Studies Conference Report, Rosalind De Sailly Jan 1996

University Of Adelaide, Seventeenth Australasian Victorlian Studies Conference Report, Rosalind De Sailly

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The seventeenth conference of the Australasian Victorian Studies Association was held at the University of Adelaide in February 1996. The conference theme 'The Victorians and Science' inspired several papers on George Eliot's relation to matters scientific.

Barbara Garlick (Senior Tutor, University of Queensland) examined passages from Daniel Deronda in her paper 'George Eliot's Optics and the "Solidity of Objects'“. Dr. Garlick premissed her account of Eliot's optics on Lewes's theory of vision as a psychological act which interiorizes the external world according to intuitions and ideas. Vision was used to demonstrate how ways of seeing structure the narrative as they …

Hardy And Eliot: The Eye Of Narcissus' Looking-Glass, Nicola Harris Jan 1996

Hardy And Eliot: The Eye Of Narcissus' Looking-Glass, Nicola Harris

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Hardy was both surprised and offended by the comparisons made between Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) and the novels of George Eliot; indeed, several critics went so far as to ascribe this new work to the acknowledged master in a complimentary manner but this failed to placate the aspiring newcomer. But most galling of all was the response it elicited from Henry James. From the very beginning, James took exception to the formal technique adopted by the writer who would become his greatest rival. He offered the most acerbic and derogatory commentary when he defined Hardy's first major success …

Legal Ethics In Preparation For Law Practice, Robert P. Burns Jan 1996

Legal Ethics In Preparation For Law Practice, Robert P. Burns

Nebraska Law Review

This article first examines the different ways in which the MacCrate Report—the Report of the Task Force on Law Schools and the Profession: Narrowing the Gap, 1992—demonstrates the pervasiveness of legal ethics in the practice of law. Second, this article describes a set of basic principles that strongly suggest that the study of legal ethics ought to be integrated with the study of fundamental lawyering skills. Finally, this article gives a brief account of two exercises from Northwestern University School of Law’s integrated program to demonstrate the importance of a contextual introduction to legal ethics.

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: The Nebraska Supreme Court Perpetuates The Uncertainty Surrounding The Grandparent Visitation Statute In Eberspacher V. Hulme, 248 Neb. 202, 533 N.W.2d 103 (1995), Christopher M. Bikus

Nebraska Law Review

With the recent widespread enactment of grandparent visitation statutes, grandparents’ legal access to their grandchildren changed dramatically. This Note begins by examining the history of grandparent visitation rights within the United States, and more specifically, within Nebraska (Part II). An examination of the facts and holding of the Eberspacher v. Hulme opinion follows (Part III). Part IV analyzes the standard of review set forth by the Nebraska Supreme Court in the first grandparent visitation rights decision and the standard as it was properly applied by the Nebraska Court of Appeals in Eberspacher. This Note then criticizes the supreme court’s failure …

Cattle, Co-Wives, Children, And Calabashes: Material Context For Symbol Use Among The Il Chamus Of West-Central Kenya, Alan J. Osborn Jan 1996

Cattle, Co-Wives, Children, And Calabashes: Material Context For Symbol Use Among The Il Chamus Of West-Central Kenya, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

This paper examines systemic contexts for symbol use among the Maa-speaking Il Chamus in the Lake Baringo region of west-central Kenya. The systemic context for symbols and material culture consists of the environmental constraints and behavioral responses that characterize pastoralist life in East Africa. The author's interest in this problem developed in response to Ian Hodder’s work among the Il Chamus, Pokot, and Tugen in the Baringo District. Unlike Hodder, however, the author argues that symbols and their use in East Africa can be more productively explained from a materialist perspective. Specifically, it is proposed that symbols affixed to certain …

G96-1294 Gangs: The New Family, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1996

G96-1294 Gangs: The New Family, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the history and present status of gangs in the United States, the implications of their effects upon family life today and offers suggestions for intervention and prevention.

There has been an explosion of awareness and concern about gang membership and gang activity in the United States since 1990. Parents, schools, city and state government and law enforcement officials have attempted to confront this phenomenon, often with limited success. Street gangs have existed in the U.S. since the late nineteenth century, and sociologists have studied them since the 1920s. But the current interest in gangs has been fueled …

Issues In The Treatment Of Depressed Children, Kevin D. Stark, Scott A. Napolitano, Susan M. Swearer Napolitano, Kristen Schmidt, Deborah Jaramillo, Jonathan Hoyle

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Basic research into the cognitive, behavioral, familial, and physiological disturbances associated with depressive disorders during childhood is reviewed. hnplications for the development of a treatment program are discussed and a comprehensive treatment model is proposed. The proposed model includes intervention strategies for the child, parents, family, and school. The child component consists of intervention strategies for the affective, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological disturbances that are evident from the existing research. The parent training component is designed to address disturbances in parenting due to cognitive disturbances and skills deficits. The family therapy component emphasizes changing interaction patterns that communicate schema-consistent maladaptive …

Humankind's Greatest Gift: On The Innateness Of Language, Tina Brown Jan 1996

Humankind's Greatest Gift: On The Innateness Of Language, Tina Brown

Nebraska Anthropologist

Although the environment has an effect on the quality of language development, the fact that language is limited to the human species, that neurological structures of the brain specialize in language functions, and that universal characteristics of language and language development occur independently of environmental factors suggests that human language has a definite biological component.

Reservoirs And Reservations, Karen M. Griffin Jan 1996

Reservoirs And Reservations, Karen M. Griffin

Nebraska Anthropologist

In the late 1930s and 1940s. the Army Corps of Engineers was heavily involved in the development plans for a number of large dams located throughout the country. Many of these dams, and the reservoirs they created, have either been situated on Native American reservations or have had direct impact on reservations. This paper proposes that while the original intent of these dams was to benefit a number of people, there may have been those who saw dams as a convenient tool in the fight to terminate and assimilate the Native American population. Evidence regarding two of these projects, the …

Clinical Teaching, Ethical Negotiation, And Moral Judgment, Mary Jo Eyster Jan 1996

Clinical Teaching, Ethical Negotiation, And Moral Judgment, Mary Jo Eyster

Nebraska Law Review

The theme of this article is that we must begin to focus our legal educational efforts on moral character as well as technical skills if we are to improve the overall ethical conduct of the profession. In Part III, I discuss the reasons I believe it is both important and difficult to teach law students the process of negotiation and how to conduct themselves in the process. I describe the structural and ethical problems and why they are so seemingly intractable. I then describe the curriculum that I have developed to enable students to enter their professional careers with an …

A Cross-National Study On The Relations Among Prosocial Moral Reasoning, Gender Role Orientations, And Prosocial Behaviors, Gustavo Carlo, Silvia H. Koller, Nancy Eisenberg, Marcia S. Da Silva, Claudia B. Frohlich Jan 1996

A Cross-National Study On The Relations Among Prosocial Moral Reasoning, Gender Role Orientations, And Prosocial Behaviors, Gustavo Carlo, Silvia H. Koller, Nancy Eisenberg, Marcia S. Da Silva, Claudia B. Frohlich

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This research examined the correlates of prosocial moral reasoning (PMR) in 2 studies. Study I investigated age, gender, and culture group differences in PMR in Brazilian children and adolescents (n = 265) and U.S. adolescents (n = 67). Relations between PMR and both prosocial behaviors and gender role orientations in Brazilian adolescents (n = 136) were explored in Study 2. Self-reflective, internalized reasoning was positively related, and hedonistic reasoning was negatively related, to peer ratings of prosocial behaviors. Femininity was associated with more self-reflective, internalized concerns and with less concerns regarding gaining others’ approval. In general, age …

“Introduction” To Perspectives On Anxiety, Fear, And Panic, Debra Hope Jan 1996

“Introduction” To Perspectives On Anxiety, Fear, And Panic, Debra Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In recent years the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation has returned explicitly to the theme of motivation. The 43d volume is no exception. In the spring of 1995, leading researchers and theorists came together in Lincoln, Nebraska, to offer their perspectives on anxiety, panic, and fear. Clearly, the theme of this year's symposium is closely tied to motivation.
