An Organizational Learning Approach To Domain Analysis, Scott Henninger, Kris Lappala, Anand Raghavendran Jan 1995

An Organizational Learning Approach To Domain Analysis, Scott Henninger, Kris Lappala, Anand Raghavendran

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

As the application of computer technology continues to proliferate and diversify, the identification and understanding of application domains is becoming increasingly important to software development methodologies. Domain analysis techniques have been developed to accumulate and formalize the knowledge necessary for successful software reuse. These techniques have been shown to be useful, but suffer from defining the domain too restrictively, burying important relationships deep in domain taxonomies, and prohibiting flexible identification of domains with common issues. Techniques are needed that dynamically detect recurring patterns of activities in development projects. This paper presents a method for developing and refining the knowledge and …

Recognizing And Managing Multiple Organizational Approaches, Joan Giesecke Jun 1994

Recognizing And Managing Multiple Organizational Approaches, Joan Giesecke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Organizational theory today includes a number of analytical models which provide descriptions of how organizations function as well as prescriptions as to how organizations should function. Five organizational models seem particularly appropriate to academic libraries. The rational model describes organizations as value- maximizing units which are task oriented. The political bargaining model views organizations as arenas for conflict and bargaining where participants form coalitions and interest groups to achieve their own ends. The garbage can model views the organization as a chaotic mess where independent actors pursue individual, yet changing goals and decisions are mostly a function of timing. The …

Faculty Developers As Change Facilitators: The Concerns-Based Adoption Model, Lynn Evans, Sheila Chauvin Jan 1993

Faculty Developers As Change Facilitators: The Concerns-Based Adoption Model, Lynn Evans, Sheila Chauvin

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Faculty members involved in efforts to improve their teaching, as well as the faculty developers who work with them, progress through natural, predictable stages of concern which, if understood, can form the basis of appropriate interventions. In this article the authors examine a framework that faculty developers and leaders of change efforts can use in their roles as change facilitators. This framework for understanding and planning educational change is part of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) developed by Hall, Hord, and others at the University of Texas at Austin Research and Development Center.

Taking The Lead: Faculty Development As Institutional Change Agent, Kenneth J. Zahorski

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This article looks at the nature, role, and functions of faculty development from a particular philosophical perspective, exploring ways in which faculty development professionals might step beyond their traditional institutional role as facilitators to become even more powerful change agents. More specifically, the author (1) identifies areas where change agent strategies may be used, (2) provides some concrete examples of faculty development serving as an effective institutional change agent, and (3) identifies the conditions needed for faculty developers to become successful change agents.

Managing Russian Factory Workers: The Impact Of U.S.-Based Behavioral And Participative Techniques, Dianne H.B. Welsh, Fred Luthans, Steven M. Sommer

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The new internationalization of the field of management has produced growing concern as to whether theories and techniques largely developed in the United States apply to other cultures. A within-subjects experimental design was used to analyze the impacts that three popular and successful techniques used in U.S. studies had on the performance of workers in the largest textile factory in the Russian republic of the former Soviet Union. Two techniques, providing extrinsic rewards and behavioral management, had significant,

Changes In Extension Educators' Perceptions Of Job Dimensions And Job Satisfaction Following Organizational Restructuring, John W. Furgason Dec 1992

Changes In Extension Educators' Perceptions Of Job Dimensions And Job Satisfaction Following Organizational Restructuring, John W. Furgason

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The literature provides ample evidence that state Extension programs across the country are introducing new or modified program development approaches and reorganized work units as they attempt to remain responsive to the public's educational needs. Implementation of such innovations, in many instances, represents change in Extension agent roles and responsibilities which could be characterized as a redesign of Extension work. Research on the effects of job redesign has consistently found evidence that workers' perceptions of certain core dimensions or characteristics of their jobs influence their satisfaction with that job. Given the changing organizational climate within Extension and the findings of …

Climate For Change In Extension: Different Perspectives Make A Difference, Rose Marie Tondl Sep 1991

Climate For Change In Extension: Different Perspectives Make A Difference, Rose Marie Tondl

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

The 1990s are ushering in major changes for Cooperative Extension as National Initiatives become the foundation for program planning, replacing some of the traditional discipline-based programs. As new ideas for program operations are introduced, a natural consequence is human resistance to change. Throughout the system, we're being forced to cope with fundamental changes in the way we do business. The possibility of upsetting the balance of power exists. Individuals will take action based on their perception of how changes will affect their relative power position in the organization. New knowledge, varying economic conditions, pressures of competition, evolution of new cultural …

6. The Use Of The Computer In The Practice Of Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Lyle F. Schoenfeldt, Jorge L. Mendoza

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

The rapid proliferation of computer technology, in the form of mainframe computers, networks of interconnected machines, and stand-alone personal computers, is having a profound effect on many areas of life. As a result of the spread of computer equipment to offices, homes, and educational institutions; the variety of software applications has grown at an unprecedented rate. With this as background, it should be no surprise that computers have assumed an increasing role in professional practice, including applications in providing services in the area of industrial and organizational psychology.

Industrial-organizational psychologists function in a variety of settings, but primarily provide human …

Blau's Theory Of Structural Differentiation Revisited: A Theory Of Structural Change Or Scale?, John B. Cullen, Kenneth S. Anderson, Douglas D. Blaker Jan 1986

Blau's Theory Of Structural Differentiation Revisited: A Theory Of Structural Change Or Scale?, John B. Cullen, Kenneth S. Anderson, Douglas D. Blaker

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The major objective of this study was to determine if Blau's (1970) theory of structural differentiation better captures differences in scale between organizations or structural changes within organizations. Data gathered on 134 Ph.D.-granting universities over nine years permitted us to compare results of within-organizations tests of Blau's theory those from both cross-sectional and longitudinal between-organization tests. The findings suggest that the theory's power lies in explaining structural differences between organizations rather than in explaining structural change.
