Nutritional Complementation Of Oxidative Glucose Metabolism In Escherichia Coli Via Pyrroloquinoline Quinone-Dependent Glucose Dehydrogenase And The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway, Michael Adamowicz, Tyrrell Conway, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Nutritional Complementation Of Oxidative Glucose Metabolism In Escherichia Coli Via Pyrroloquinoline Quinone-Dependent Glucose Dehydrogenase And The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway, Michael Adamowicz, Tyrrell Conway, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Papers in Microbiology
Two glucose-negative Escherichia coli mutants (ZSC113 and DF214) were unable to grow on glucose as the sole carbon source unless supplemented with pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ). PQQ is the cofactor for the periplasmic enzyme glucose dehydrogenase, which converts glucose to gluconate. Aerobically, E. coli ZSC113 grew on glucose plus PQQ with a generation time of 65 min, a generation time about the same as that for wildtype E. coli in a defined glucose-salts medium. Thus, for E. coli ZSC113 the Entner-Doudoroff pathway was fully able to replace the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway. In the presence of 5% sodium dodecyl sulfate, PQQ no longer …

Landscape Plants, Forest Trees, And Crops Most Resistant To Mammal Damage: An Overview, Rex E. Marsh
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
To capitalize on mammal-resistant plants, several approaches may be taken. The most common is to select crops not highly prone to mammal damage (i.e., resistant crops). If a generally susceptible crop is to be grown, the more resistant varieties or cultivars of that crop can be selected, if known. An approach that has not received the attention it warrants is the selection of parent stock with resistant characteristics and the selective breeding of useful species to develop strains, hybrids, or cultivars with improved mammal resistance. For several reasons, this latter approach shows the most promise for forest tree species. It …

Effect Of Desiccation, Ph, Heat, And Ultraviolet Irradiation On Viability Of Baculovirus Penaei, Brian D. Leblanc, Robin M. Overstreet
Effect Of Desiccation, Ph, Heat, And Ultraviolet Irradiation On Viability Of Baculovirus Penaei, Brian D. Leblanc, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Tolerance of Baculovirus penaei virus to desiccation, pH, heat, and ultraviolet irradiation (uv), as well as its survival in 32 ppt sea water, was investigated using larval Penaeus vannamei in a bioassay. Test shrimp were sampled from 36 to 264 hr after food-borne exposure to treated B. penaei and examined for patent infections (polyhedral inclusion bodies detectable in fresh preparations of hepatopancreas) with light microscopy. B. penaei was completely inactivated within 30 min after exposure to pH 3, whereas exposure to pH 11 extended the prepatency period (period before infection is apparent) but did not inactivate the virus. B. penaei …
Ecological Considerations In The Management Of Wildlife Damage , Robert K. Swihart
Ecological Considerations In The Management Of Wildlife Damage , Robert K. Swihart
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
Strategies for managing wildlife damage may be divided into 3 broad categories: direct manipulation of populations, manipulation of behavioral or ecological traits of pest species, and manipulation of environmental features. For each of these categories, I review the importance of ecological considerations in determining the effectiveness of management strategies. Proper incorporation of ecological information is important to the success of management strategies in all 3 categories. I predict that future demands will increase for ecologically-based strategies that require minimal intervention, and for integration of management strategies that simultaneously address problems posed by both vertebrate and invertebrate pests. Several recent ecologically-based …

Ec91-123 Drought Management On Range And Pastureland: A Handbook For Nebraska And South Dakota, Patrick E. Reece, Jack D. Alexander, James R. Johnson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Drought is generally defined as a prolonged period during which annual precipitation is less than 75 percent of average. Based upon this definition, drought has occurred in 21 percent of the years in the northern Great Plains since 1940. Poor distribution of precipitation in a single year or less than average precipitation in successive years can also cause drought conditions.
This extension circulation discusses the following: how plants respond to drought, management preparation for drought, herd management, animal response to drought, predicting forage production and stocking rates, drought management plans, rangeland resource inventory, grazing management, and plant recovery after drought.

G91-1032 Dairy Cow Health And Metabolic Disease Relative To Nutritional Factors, Duane N. Rice, Rick Stock
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes the various implications and effects of dairy cow metabolic problems, their causes, and management recommendations for prevention.
Nutritional imbalances, deficiencies, or erratic management of feeding programs for dairy cows can create large numbers and various types of health problems generally categorized as metabolic diseases.
Compounding the problem are the ever-changing nutritional needs of the cow, her lactation/dry period needs, feed quality changes, and producer personal management practices.

Ec91-269 Domestic Poultry Feed Formulation Guide, Earl W. Gleaves, Thomas W. Sullivan, F. John Struwe
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication provides basic, practical information about nturition and diet requirements for poultry. Nutrient requirements, diet formulations, feed ingredient analyses, and feeding methods are ever changing. Feed cost is the largest single item of expense in producing poultry meat or eggs. Poultry producers should adopt a comprehensive feeding program based on sound nutrition principles tailored to a specific production purpose. This publication provides the basis for such a feeding program.

Trace Elements In Existing Wetlands And Proposed Mitigation Sites In The U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation's Shoshone Rehbilitation & Betterment Project, Park And Bighorn Counties, Wyoming, Pedro Ramirez Jr., Joni Armstrong
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) conducted a baseline inventory of trace elements at proposed mitigation sites and existing wetlands within the Shoshone Project for the Great Plains Region of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Mitigation proposed for wetland losses attributed to the Shoshone Rehabilitation and Betterment Project consists of wetland creation or enhancement within the project area. The quality of irrigation drainage and its effects on fish and wildlife are potential concerns with the existing project. The two sediment samples collected from a large alkali flat near Deaver Reservoir had elevated selenium concentrations (12 and 13 ug/g dry …
