Contemporary Embroideries Of Rabaris Of Kutch: Economic And Cultural Viability, Judy Frater
Contemporary Embroideries Of Rabaris Of Kutch: Economic And Cultural Viability, Judy Frater
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Monghiben Rabari is attending an exhibition and sale in Mumbai. Her traditional embroidery has taken her from Vandh, her village of mud huts and camels on the seacoast of Kutch to India’s most cosmopolitan urban metropolis. She is thrilled by the glittering bustle, and by the customers’ enthusiastic response. She deals directly with them, as a professional artisan. And not only do the customers buy; one woman is so impressed that she wants to learn embroidery. She engages Monghi as a teacher during the afternoon lulls of the exhibition.
Surely, we have succeeded in the transition from tradition to profession. …

Responses To Selection For Lean Growth In Sheep, G. Simm, R. M. Lewis, B. Grundy, W. S. Dingwall
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
This paper reports the selection responses achieved, and related results, following 9 years of index selection for lean growth in Suffolk sheep. The breeding goal of the index used comprised carcass lean weight and carcass fat weight at a constant age, with relative economic values of + 3 and –1 per kg. The selection criteria were live weight (LWT), ultrasonic fat depth (UFD) and ultrasonic muscle depth (UMD) adjusted to a constant age of 150 days. By year 9, responses in LWT, UFD and UMD in both sexes, as judged by the divergence between selection and control line performance, amounted …

Effect Of Sprinkling On Heat Stressed Heifers, Shane Davis, Terry L. Mader, John Gaughan
Effect Of Sprinkling On Heat Stressed Heifers, Shane Davis, Terry L. Mader, John Gaughan
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Six heifers were housed in controlled environmental stalls. All heifers were sprinkled with water between 1300 - 1500 hours for three days followed by a two-day period in which three were sprinkled between 1200 - 1600 hours and three were not. This was followed by a one day hot period during which all heifers were sprinkled (1300 - 1500 hours). Rectal temperature and respiration rate were reduced in all animals during the first three days of heat stress. On days four and five, heifers sprinkled four hours had lower rectal temperature, respiration rate and pulse rate than heifers which were …

Replacement Heifer Development For Spring And Summer Calving Herds, Gene H. Deutscher, Brent Plugge, Andy Applegarth, Rex Davis
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A three-year study on heifer development of spring-born (n=240) and summer-born heifers (n=146) was conducted using sandhills ranch management. Spring-born heifers developed during the winter to reach 53% of mature weight at breeding had similar reproduction and calf production as heifers that reached 57% of mature weight. Feed costs were $22/heifer less for the lighter weight heifers. Summer-born heifers that were developed to reach 60% of mature weight at breeding in early fall had normal yearling pregnancy rates, but rebreeding rates of the 2-year-old cows were low, which caused high culling rates. Two-year-old cows calving in May produced greater calf …

Urinary Allantoin As An Estimate Of Microbial Protein Synthesis, Mariela Lamothe, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Galen E. Erickson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Allantoin excretion in the urine was evaluated as a marker for bacterial protein production in lactating and dry cows grazing Sandhills range and meadows. Allantoin excretion declined with season as diet digestibility declined. Bacterial protein predicted from allantoin was significantly related (R2 = .62) to bacterial protein predicted by NRC. Urinary allantoin has potential as a tool to predict bacterial protein production in grazing cattle.

Further Remarks On Risk Sources Measuring: The Case Of A Life Annuity Portfolio, Mariarosaria Coppola, Emilia Di Lorenzo, Marilena Sibillo
Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)
The paper considers a model that allows the actuary to measure the riskiness connected to the randomness of projected mortality tables in evaluating a portfolio of life annuities, obtaining a measure to reflect the risk associated with the randomness of the projection. The coherence of the risk parameters with the specific nature of the considered risk sources is also discussed. Numerical examples illustrate the results, showing the importance of the risk components in terms of the number of policies and comparing measure tools obtained by means of two procedures.

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
In 1999, a field experiment was established to (I) quantify and understand the yield potential of corn and soybean under irrigated conditions, (2) identify efficient crop management practices to achieve yields that approach potential levels, and (3) determine the energy use efficiency, global warming and soil C-sequestration potential of intensively managed corn systems. The experiment compares systems that represent different levels of management intensity expressed as combinations of crop rotation (continuous corn, corn-soybean), plant density (low. medium. high) and nutrient management (recommended best management vs. intensive management). Detailed measurements include soil nutrient dynamics and C balance, crop growth and development, …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Six ruminally and duodenally cannulated yearling steers (523 kg) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design experiment to study the effects of corn processing on nutrient digestion, bacterial CP production, and ruminal fermentation. Dietary treatments consisted of 90% concentrate diets that were based on dry-rolled (DRC), high-moisture (HMC), or steam-flaked (SFC) corn. Each diet contained 2.0% urea (DM basis) as the sole source of supplemental nitrogen. Each period lasted 17 d, with d 1 through 14 for diet adaptation and d 15 through 17 for fecal, duodenal, and ruminal sampling. Dry matter and OM intakes were …

Fiber-Type Composition Of Muscles Of The Beef Chuck And Round, K. S. Kirchofer, Chris R. Calkins, B. L. Gwartney
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Thirty-eight muscles of the beef chuck and round were histochemically stained to characterize fiber-type composition in order to facilitate optimal muscle use in value-added products. Select-grade chucks and rounds (n = 4 each) were chosen to represent two carcass weight classes (250 to 295 kg and 363 to 410 kg) and two yield grades (1 and 3). Muscles were sectioned and stained with a procedure that included a succinate dehydrogenase and an adenosine triphosphatase staining technique. Number and diameter of β-red, α-red, and α-white muscle fibers were used to determine muscle fiber percentage, muscle fiber area, and percent area in …

A Description Of The Growth Of Sheep And Its Genetic Analysis, R. M. Lewis, G. C. Emmans, G. Simm
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The Gompertz is one of a family of growth functions that, when the environment [eg.food, housing) is nonlimiting, provides a useful description of growth as a comparatively simple, single equation. It has three parameters of which the important ones are mature size, A, and the rate parameter, B. Estimates of A and B, however, are highly correlated and defining their separate values for individual animals is problematic. This problem was explored using five methods for estimating the parometers, or transformations ofthem, to describe the growth oftwo genotypes of Suffolk sheep kept under non-limiting conditions. 0 ne genotype was under selection …

Effects Of Breed And Family On Rate Of Copper Accretion In The Liver Of Purebred Charollais, Suffolk And Texel Lambs, N. F. Shuttle, R. M. Lewis, J. Small
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The feeding of housed lambs on conserved forages and pelleted rations is accompanied by a high risk of chronic cpper (Cu) poisoning (CCP) which might be reduced by seleting sires for low liver Cu status. Livers were therefore retrieved from Suffolk, Texel and Charollais lambs, slaughtered during the course of a performance trial, to ascertain sire and possibly breed effects on the rate of Cu accretion in the liver. In total, 160 livers were obtained, 100 from Suffolk, 40 from Texel and 20 from Charollais lambs, the progeny of 14, eight and eight sires, respectively. Lambs came from three separately …
Effects Of Index Selection On The Carcass Composition Of Sheep Given Either Ad Libitum Or Controlled Amounts Of Food, R. M. Lewis, G. C. Emmans, G. Simm
Effects Of Index Selection On The Carcass Composition Of Sheep Given Either Ad Libitum Or Controlled Amounts Of Food, R. M. Lewis, G. C. Emmans, G. Simm
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Sheep of a line (S) selected on an index to increase lean weight and decrease fatness at an age, and a control line (C), were given a high quality food at different levels including ad libitum. Live performance was measured from about 21 to 114 kg live weight, The carcasses of each line were analysed for lean, fat and bone at three widely varying weights in both males and females. Level of feeding did not affect the extent to which S was superior to C in either the level of fatness in the carcass (0·86 as much) or the ratio …

G02-1476 Prairie Dogs And Their Control, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Dallas Virchow, John Hobbs
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Black-tailed prairie dogs are stocky, burrowing rodents that are members of the squirrel family. They are the only species of prairie dog native to Nebraska and they live across the western three-fourths of the state. They cause problems, however, when they conflict with livestock ranching and other land uses, or cause a threat to human health and safety.
This NebGuide provides information on the life history and legal status of black-tailed prairie dogs and prevention and control of the damage they can cause.

G02-1482 Guidelines For A Non-Fasting Feeding Program For The Molting Of Laying Hens, Sheila E. Scheideler, Mary M. Beck
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Laying hens are molted at the end of one laying cycle (i.e. one year) to induce a cessation of lay and rejuvenation of the reproductive tract and skeleton for a second cycle of egg production. This is based on the natural molting process that wild birds undergo annually and traditionally it has been induced by fasting the hens for a short period of time. This NebGuide offers guidance on non-fasting feeding program for the molting of laying hens.

Dried Poultry Waste For Cows Grazing Low-Quality Winter Forage, D. J. Jordon, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Two trials conducted in 1996–97 measured BW and body condition score changes of cows fed different sources of degradable intake protein, including dried poultry waste and soybean meal, while grazing low-quality winter forages. In Trial 1, 60 spring calving cows (5 yr; 555 kg) were used in an individual supplementation trial. Cows were gathered three times a week, sorted into individual pens, and fed their respective supplement. Cows grazed dormant native Sandhills winter range (common pasture) and were assigned to one of six supplemental treatments: 1) no supplement, 2) urea, 3) 22% dried poultry waste + urea, 4) soybean meal, …
