Manure Matters, Volume 8, Number 4, Michael Brumm, Charles A. Shapiro, William Kranz

Manure Matters (newsletter)

Nitrate contamination of groundwater was first detected in Holt County, Nebraska in the mid- 1960’s. From 1976 to 1990, nitrate-N concentrations increased in 90 percent of the wells sampled by the Natural Resource Districts (NRD) in the county. As a consequence of the concerns associated with this increase, the Holt County Manure Management Education Project was funded by an EPA-319 grant with cooperation among UNL Cooperative Extension, UNL Conservation and Survey Division, USDA-NRCS, the Lower Niobrara NRD, and the Upper Elkhorn NRD. The goal of the project was to educate producers on cropping and manure best management practices to protect …

Foreign Exploration For Scirtothrips Perseae Nakahara (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) And Associated Natural Enemies On Avocado (Persea Americana Miller), Mark S. Hoddle, Sueo Nakahara, Phil A. Phillips

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Scirtothrips perseae Nakahara was discovered attacking avocados in California,USA, in 1996. Host plant surveys in California indicated that S. perseae has a highly restricted host range with larvae being found only on avocados, while adults were collected from 11 different plant species. As part of a management program for this pest, a ‘‘classical’’ biological control program was initiated and foreign exploration was conducted to delineate the home range of S. perseae, to survey for associated natural enemies and inventory other species of phytophagous thrips on avocados grown in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad, and Brazil. United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Alcohol can be considered as a nutritional toxin when ingested in excess amounts and leads to skeletal muscle myopathy. We hypothesized that altered protease activities contribute to this phenomenon, and that differential effects on protease activities may occur when: (1) rats at different stages in their development are administered alcohol in vivo; (2) acute ethanol treatment is superimposed on chronic alcohol-feeding in vivo; and (3) muscles are exposed to alcohol and acetaldehyde in vivo and in vitro. In acute studies, rats weighing approximately 0.1 kg (designated immature) or approximately 0.25 kg (designated mature) body weight (BW) were dosed acutely with …

Folate Synthesis In Plants: The First Step Of The Pterin Branch Is Mediated By A Unique Bimodular Gtp Cyclohydrolase I, Gilles J. C. Basset, Eoin P. Quinlivan, Michael J. Ziemak, Rocío Díaz De La Garza, Markus Fischer, Susi Schiffmann, Adelbert Bacher, Jesse F. Gergory Iii, Andrew D. Hanson

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

GTP cyclohydrolase I (GCHI) mediates the first and committing step of the pterin branch of the folate-synthesis pathway. In microorganisms and mammals, GCHI is a homodecamer of ≈26-kDa subunits. Genomic approaches identified tomato and Arabidopsis cDNAs specifying ≈50-kDa proteins containing two GCHI-like domains in tandem and indicated that such bimodular proteins occur in other plants. Neither domain of these proteins has a full set of the residues involved in substrate binding and catalysis in other GCHIs. The tomato and Arabidopsis cDNAs nevertheless encode functional enzymes, as shown by complementation of a yeast fol2 mutant and by assaying GCHI activity …

G02-1445 Understanding Vaccines, Dicky D. Griffin, Steve Ensley, David R. Smith, Grant Dewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide explains the basics of vaccine value, the differences between types of vaccines used in animals, and discusses vaccine selection and vaccination program development.

Vaccines are an important part of disease prevention and control. Like insurance, vaccines come at a cost, including the price of the vaccine, labor to administer the vaccine, localized tissue damage from vaccine injections, and increased metabolic demand of the animal causing potential performance loss during the time the animal is developing a proper immune response. The increased metabolic demand can cause the animal to look depressed and therefore may be confused with illness. This …

Potential Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Mule Deer And Pronghorn Populations In Western Wyoming, Hall Sawyer, Fred Lindzey, Doug Mcwhirter, Keith Andrews Jan 2002

Potential Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Mule Deer And Pronghorn Populations In Western Wyoming, Hall Sawyer, Fred Lindzey, Doug Mcwhirter, Keith Andrews

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

Western Wyoming is home to the largest, most diverse ungulate populations in the Rocky Mountain region. Maintenance of these populations and protection of their habitats is a primary concern among public and private sectors. While urban expansion, habitat loss, disease and changes in vegetation contribute to management concerns, extensive energy development is thought to pose the most serious threat to mule deer and pronghorn populations. Southwestern Wyoming is rich with oil and gas resources and has consistently produced 10 million barrels of oil each year, with gas production increasing steadily since the early 1980s. A five-county area (Sweetwater, Carbon, Sublette, …

Mammals Of The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument: A Literature And Museum Survey, Jerran T. Flinders, Duke S. Rogers, Jackee L. Webber-Alston, Harry A. Barber

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

This is the first treatment of the mammals of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM). GSENM was established in 1996 as a 1.7-million-acre (680,000-ha) federal land reserve under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). To successfully manage this new monument, the BLM is presently developing a management action plan. To provide information for the proper management of mammal species of the area, we have reviewed background literature for each mammal potentially found within the Monument boundaries. We propose that a core area, surrounded by a buffer matrix, be used in GSENM and surrounding public lands to preserve …

Endangered Peoples of Africa and the Middle East: Struggles to Survive and Thrive is about human populations residing in Africa and the Middle East, a diverse region that is connected geographically, culturally, and historically. The African continent is vast and covers 11.7 million square miles, or an area slightly larger than the combined area of the United States and South America (Table 1). Today, the African continent is home to some 771 million people distributed within fifty-four separate countries. Of the world's continents, Africa is by far the most diverse culturally. In Sudan, for example, there are over 200 ethnic …

Overview Of The Use Of The The U.S. Epa Exposure Factors Handbook, Jacqueline Moya, Linda Phillips Jan 2002

Overview Of The Use Of The The U.S. Epa Exposure Factors Handbook, Jacqueline Moya, Linda Phillips

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Risk assessments are important components of the decision making process. At hazardous waste sites, they are used as tools to determine appropriate cleanup levels. Therefore, it is critical that the best up-to-date methods, models, and exposure data are available to the exposure and risk assessor to realistically estimate the potential for human and ecological exposures to environmental contaminants. The EPA Exposure Factors Handbook published in 1997 is a tool available to exposure assessors which summarizes statistical data on exposure factors necessary to conduct human health exposure assessments. Since it was first published by EPA in 1989, the handbook has been …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Gray whales are coastal migratory baleen whales that are benthic feeders. Most of their feeding takes place in the northern Pacific Ocean with opportunistic feeding taking place during their migrations and residence on the breeding grounds. The concentrations of organochlorines and trace elements were determined in tissues and stomach contents of juvenile gray whales that were taken on their Arctic feeding grounds in the western Bering Sea during a Russian subsistence harvest. These concentrations were compared to previously published data for contaminants in gray whales that stranded along the west coast of the US during their northbound migration. Feeding in …

Dispersal And Emerging Ecological Impacts Of Ponto-Caspian Species In The Laurentian Great Lakes, Henry A. Vanderploeg, Thomas F. Nalepa, David J. Jude, Edward L. Mills, Kristen T. Holeck, James R. Liebig, Igor A. Grigorovich, Henn Ojaveer Jan 2002

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We describe, explain, and “predict” dispersal and ecosystem impacts of six Ponto-Caspian endemic species that recently invaded the Great Lakes via ballast water. The zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, and quagga mussel, Dreissena bugensis, continue to colonize hard and soft substrates of the Great Lakes and are changing ecosystem function through mechanisms of ecosystem engineering (increased water clarity and reef building), fouling native mussels, high particle filtration rate with selective rejection of colonial cyanobacteria in pseudofeces, alteration of nutrient ratios, and facilitation of the rapid spread of their Ponto-Caspian associates, the benthic amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus and the round goby, …

Contemporary Embroideries Of Rabar1s Of Kutch: Economic And Cultural Viability, Judy Frater Jan 2002

Contemporary Embroideries Of Rabar1s Of Kutch: Economic And Cultural Viability, Judy Frater

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Monghiben Rabari is attending an exhibition and sale in Mumbai. Her traditional embroidery has taken her from Vandh, her village of mud huts and camels on the seacoast of Kutch to India's most cosmopolitan urban metropolis. She is thrilled by the glittering bustle, and by the customers' enthusiastic response. She deals directly with them, as a professional artisan. And not only do the customers buy; one woman is so impressed that she wants to learn embroidery. She engages Monghi as a teacher during the afternoon lulls of the exhibition.

Surely, we have succeeded in the transition from tradition to profession. …

Inhibition Of Hepatic Stellate Cell Collagen Synthesis By N-(Methy1amino)Isobutyric Acid, Thomas L. Freeman, Kusum K. Kharbanda, Dean Tuma, Mark Milliard Jan 2002

Inhibition Of Hepatic Stellate Cell Collagen Synthesis By N-(Methy1amino)Isobutyric Acid, Thomas L. Freeman, Kusum K. Kharbanda, Dean Tuma, Mark Milliard

United States Public Health Resources

The increased deposition of extracellular matrix by hepatic stellate cells following liver injury, in a process known as activation, is considered a key mechanism for increased collagen content of liver during the development of liver fibrosis. We report that N- (methylamino)isobutyric acid (MeAIB), a specific inhibitor of System A-mediated amino acid uptake, reduces the accumulation of collagen in CFSC-2G hepatic stellate cell cultures and in a rat model of liver injury and fibrosis. Rat CFSC-2G cells were cultured in 0-5 mM MeAIB, and the accumulation and synthesis of collagen were measured by binding to Sirius red F3B and pulse-labeling with …

Ata2-Mediated Amino Acid Uptake Following Partial Hepatectomy Is Regulated By Redistribution To The Plasma Membrane, Thomas L. Freeman, Geoffrey M. Thiele, Dean J. Tuma, Tina K. Machu, Mark E. Mailliard Jan 2002

Ata2-Mediated Amino Acid Uptake Following Partial Hepatectomy Is Regulated By Redistribution To The Plasma Membrane, Thomas L. Freeman, Geoffrey M. Thiele, Dean J. Tuma, Tina K. Machu, Mark E. Mailliard

United States Public Health Resources

System A, the Na+-dependent amino acid transport activity, is encoded by the ATA2 gene and up-regulated following partial hepatectomy (PH), and its competitive inhibition interferes with liver regeneration. Rabbit polyclonal antibody was raised against a portion of the ATA2 gene product followed by immunodetection of ATA2 in isolated liver plasma membrane and lysate. The level of ATA2 increased in the plasma membrane following PH, while the relatively high quantity of ATA2 found in liver lysate remained constant. We also have shown that Northern analysis of steady-state ATA2 mRNA revealed no significant change following PH. These data show that …
