Investigating Antibiotic Resistance Levels Of Salmonella Internalized In Lettuce Leaves, Jason B. Thomas May 2014

Investigating Antibiotic Resistance Levels Of Salmonella Internalized In Lettuce Leaves, Jason B. Thomas

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Contamination of food crops by the human pathogen Salmonella is a food safety threat worldwide. Though using treated wastewater for irrigation is a sustainable practice, it may introduce trace levels of Salmonella that may contaminate food crops. Salmonella could develop resistance to antibiotics present in wastewater. The overall goal of the project is to increase the understanding of the public health risk associated with the use of treated wastewater to irrigate food crops. The objective of this particular study is to determine the antibiotic resistance level of Salmonella internalized in lettuce leaves. In this experiment, thirty-six plants of the lettuce …

Effects Of Distillers Grains Plus Solubles And Monensin Supplementation On Yearlings Grazing Smooth Bromegrass, Tyler L. Hasenauer May 2014

Effects Of Distillers Grains Plus Solubles And Monensin Supplementation On Yearlings Grazing Smooth Bromegrass, Tyler L. Hasenauer

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Supplementing cattle on grass is an effective way of increasing animal efficiency and grass utilization. Distiller grains plus solubles (DGS) supplementation has been repeatedly proven as an effective supplement by providing ruminally undegradable protein (RUP), fat, and highly digestible fiber. The effects of monensin supplementation on grazing cattle are variable. Although some research has shown a decrease in forage organic matter intake (FOMI), the popular belief is monensin increases ADG while maintaining DMI in a grazing situation. Two experiments were designed to observe the effects of DGS and monensin supplementation on cattle grazing smooth bromegrass. In the first study, ADG …

Genomic Predictions For Age At Puberty And Reproductive Longevity In Sows Using Bayesian Methods, Katherine Lindsay Lucot May 2014

Genomic Predictions For Age At Puberty And Reproductive Longevity In Sows Using Bayesian Methods, Katherine Lindsay Lucot

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Including marker-assisted selection in breeding programs is potentially more efficient than traditional selection for improving traits that are expensive or difficult to measure. One of the challenges of genomics is the lack of robustness of marker effects across populations and over time (generations) and the cost to commercial producers of high-density arrays. The objective of this study was to analyze differences in the proportion of phenotypic variation explained by different fractions of major 1 Mb windows and SNPs. Using a population of Nebraska Index Line and commercial Large White x Landrace females (n = 1,234) generated in 11 batches, …

Use Of Distiller Grains In Alternative Beef Heifer Systems, Jared M. Mracek May 2014

Use Of Distiller Grains In Alternative Beef Heifer Systems, Jared M. Mracek

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Every year, producers select replacement heifers with the intention that these heifers are the future of their cow herd. Producers normally select replacement heifers at weaning based on weight and structure. When selecting heifers at weaning, producers risk not selecting heifers that would be productive cows based on their criteria. By delaying the selection of replacements, it will allow producers to increase the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate replacement prospects. The corn dry-milling industry produces byproducts that can be economical supplements to growing cattle on forage. An experiment evaluated an alternative heifer system utilizing distiller grains as an energy source to …

Mechanisms Of Differential Toxicity Between Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.) Castes With An Emphasis On Coumaphos, Lizette Dahlgren

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Acaricides are used to treat honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies to control the parasitic Varroa mite (Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman), a worldwide threat to honey bee health. As such, these compounds act as drugs to mitigate bee losses but may also stress the bees. This dissertation quantifies differences between queen and worker tolerance of five acaricides and clarifies the honey bee mechanism of tolerance for coumaphos. Selected acaricides were topically applied to adult queen and worker bees to generate dose-response curves and LD50s. Twenty-four hours after treatment, queens were 3-times more tolerant of tau-fluvalinate …

Starch-Pectin Matrices For Encapsulation Of Ascorbic Acid, Yiwei Liu May 2014

Starch-Pectin Matrices For Encapsulation Of Ascorbic Acid, Yiwei Liu

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Starch and pectin are two food-grade carbohydrates widely utilized in the food industry. Starch and pectin polymers have been investigated in encapsulating functional food ingredients and in pharmaceutical applications. Resistance to enzyme hydrolysis, differential solubilities, depending on the pH, and the ability to ‘protect’ unstable molecules are considered some of the beneficial properties of starch and pectin polymers, for encapsulation applications. Food ingredients could be delivered in a controlled manner to a specific target by encapsulating in micro-scale particles, i. e., microencapsulation. Two studies were conducted to investigate the ability of selected starch-pectin blends in microencapsulating ascorbic acid (vitamin C) …

Development Modeling Of Lucilia Sericata And Phormia Regina (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Amanda L. Roe May 2014

Development Modeling Of Lucilia Sericata And Phormia Regina (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Amanda L. Roe

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The relationship between insect development and temperature has been well established and has a wide range of uses, including using blow flies for postmortem (PMI) interval estimations in death investigations. To use insects in estimating PMI, we must be able to determine the insect age at the time of discovery and backtrack to time of oviposition. Unfortunately, existing development models of forensically important insects are only linear approximations and do not take into account the curvilinear properties experienced at extreme temperatures. A series of experiments were conducted with two species of forensically important blow flies (Lucilia sericata and Phormia …

Plasticity In Female Mate Choosiness: A Result Of Variation In Perceived Predation Risk And The Interaction Of Female Age And Male Density, Ashley N. Atwell May 2014

Plasticity In Female Mate Choosiness: A Result Of Variation In Perceived Predation Risk And The Interaction Of Female Age And Male Density, Ashley N. Atwell

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In many species, female mate choices can be a strong source of sexual selection. Females often prefer a certain male phenotype, and this can be due to benefits females gain from mating with preferred males. However, such benefits can sometimes be outweighed by the cost of searching for a preferred male. These costs and benefits often change concomitantly with changes in environmental (e.g., predator abundance and conspecific density) and internal factors (e.g., female age). Thus, female mate choosiness (the degree to which preferences for certain males are expressed) should often be plastic. Plasticity in female mate choosiness may be complicated …

Investigations Into Sensory Ecology And Gene Evolution Of The Pea Aphid (Acyrthosiphon Pisum), Swapna R. Purandare May 2014

Investigations Into Sensory Ecology And Gene Evolution Of The Pea Aphid (Acyrthosiphon Pisum), Swapna R. Purandare

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Organisms use environmental cues to gather information required to perform activities that are essential for their survival and reproduction, such as searching for food, avoiding danger, and finding mates. They respond to the acquired information by changing their behavior or physiology, which may result in increased fitness. Due to the fundamental importance of information in an organism’s life, it is important to understand its acquisition, processing, and the organism’s response to it. In the work presented here, we used the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum), an insect that produces multiple phenotypes, or morphs, that are genetically identical, but differ …

Stacking Of A Stearoyl-Acp Thioesterase With A Dual-Silenced Palmitoyl-Acp Thioesterase And Δ12 Fatty Acid Desaturase In Transgenic Soybean, Hyunwoo Park, George L. Graef, Yixiang Xu, Patrick Tenopir, Thomas E. Clemente

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr) is valued for both its protein and oil, whose seed is composed of 40% and 20% of each component, respectively. Given its high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acid and linolenic acid, soybean oil oxidative stability is relatively poor. Historically food processors have employed a partial hydrogenation process to soybean oil as a means to improve both the oxidative stability and functionality in end-use applications. However, the hydrogenation process leads to the formation of trans-fats, which are associated with negative cardiovascular health. As a means to circumvent the need for the hydrogenation process, genetic …

Turner, Ruby Pawankar, Steve Taylor, Scott Sicherer, Gideon Lack, Nelson Rosario, Motohiro Ebisawa, Gary Wong, E. N. Clare Mills, Kirsten Beyer, Alessandro Fiocchi, Hugh A. Sampson

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Food allergy appears to be on the rise with the current mainstay of treatment centred on allergen avoidance. Mandatory allergen labelling has improved the safety of food for allergic consumers. However an additional form of voluntary labelling (termed precautionary allergen labelling) has evolved on a wide range of packaged goods, in a bid by manufacturers to minimise risk to customers, and the negative impact on business that might result from exposure to trace amounts of food allergen present during cross-contamination during production. This has resulted in near ubiquitous utilisation of a multitude of different precautionary allergen labels with subsequent confusion …

Erratum To ‘‘Associations Of Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Fatness With Metabolic Syndrome In Rural Women With Prehypertension’’, Patricia A. Hageman, Carol H. Pullen, Melody Hertzog, Linda Boeckner, Susan Noble Walker

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

In the original paper, the authors discovered a computer coding error that resulted in 33 of the women’s ages being incorrectly recorded. All analyses were repeated for this paper using the corrected age dataset, as all our logistic regression analyses in the published paper were adjusted for age.The repeated analyses, using the corrected dataset, lead to minor changes that needed to be reported to the results in the published paper. These corrections did not change the conclusion of the published paper. The authors apologize for any inconvenience.
