Ec974 Nature's Spring Tonics

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Tuberculosis Of Swine, L. Van Es Feb 1925

Tuberculosis Of Swine, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The tuberculosis of swine constitutes a definite and very interesting section of the general problem of the tuberculoses of warm-blooded animals. No one section of this general tuberculosis problem can be adequately solved without regard to all the other sections into which it may be divided. The disease in swine is perhaps the most outstanding example which illustrates this point. This animal, extremely susceptible to tuberculous disease, but without a type of infection specifically its own, derives its infection by contact with any of the types of tuberculosis of warm-blooded animals.

Chapter Five: Agriculture Comes Into Its Own, Robert Crawford

These Fifty Years: A History of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska

IT MAY be said that it took eighteen years to lay the foundation of agricultural instruction and research in Nebraska, and another eighteen years to build on this foundation. The eighteen years beginning about 1890 marked a period of great development for the Industrial College as well as the University itself. A School of Agriculture was early established and in a comparatively few years began to number its students in the hundreds. What the agricultural department of the Industrial College had heretofore lacked in numbers, this secondary school supplied. For the first time, the college farm began to be regarded …

Absorption Of Nutrients From Subsoil In Relation To Crop Yield, John W. Crist, J. E. Weaver Apr 1924

Absorption Of Nutrients From Subsoil In Relation To Crop Yield, John W. Crist, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Investigations of the development of root systems of native and crop plants have been pursued for a number of years at the University of Nebraska. The gradual intensification of this work has led to a type of experimentation designed to discover the nature of the activities of roots at great depths in relation to absorption of water and nutrients. In the present investigation the effects of absorption of nutrients from deep levels upon quantity and quality of yield were determined. Studies on the amounts of water and nitrates removed by crops from various soil levels were begun in i919, but …

Range And Pasture Management, J. E. Weaver Apr 1924

Range And Pasture Management, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Sampson's range and pasture management is an excellent example of the application of the principles of ecology to the solution of economic problems. In grazing experiments it is of equal importance to know what is happening to the stock and to the vegetation. This emphasizes the fact, which ecologists are coming more and more to recognize, that animals, both wild and domesticated, have a proper place in the environment and that they play an important role in modifying the vegetational development. This volume consists largely of first-hand information obtained by the author during fifteen years of intensive pasture investigations for …

Relation Of Size Of Seed And Sprout Value To The Yield Of Small Grain Crops, T. A. Kiesselbach, C. A. Helm Dec 1917

Relation Of Size Of Seed And Sprout Value To The Yield Of Small Grain Crops, T. A. Kiesselbach, C. A. Helm

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A superior yielding power has frequently been attributed to the extra large seed. Since the seeds of any given crop commonly differ markedly in size, it is of importance from the standpoint of crop production to know the extent to which this difference in size may affect the yield of the crop produced. The following experiments have been conducted for the purpose of contributing further to the information upon this subject.

Transpiration As A Factor In Crop Production, T. A. Kiesselbach Jun 1916

Transpiration As A Factor In Crop Production, T. A. Kiesselbach

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The object of experiments reported in this bulletin has been to determine principles according to which water is used by crops. In many agricultural districts, water is frequently a seriously limiting factor in crop production. It has been thought that some means might be devised through a correct understanding of the principles involved, whereby economy in the use of water in farm practice could be increased. In this effort there are two chief points of attack, namely, (1) adjusting the external factors to the needs of the plant, and (2) selecting plants adapted to the conditions.
