Effect Of Feeding-Fasting Interval On Finishing Pigs: Blood Urea And Serum Lipid, Cholesterol And Protein Concentrations, T. L. Veum, W. G. Pond, E. F. Walker Jr., L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A system of restricted feeding in which feed is entirely withheld for intervals of 24, 48 or 72 hr. following a 24-hr. period of ad libitum feeding in continuous sequence throughout the finishing period depresses weight gain and efficiency of feed utilization in direct relation to duration of the fasting period and has marked associated effects on carcass measurements, gland and organ weights and a small effect on fatty acid composition of the back fat (Veum et al., 1970). Cohn (1963) and Leveille and Hanson (1965, 1966) have shown marked changes in metabolism of nutrients and in body composition associated …

An attempt was made in Nebraska to inventory occupations and analyze the knowledges and skills needed by a sample of employed persons. More specifically, the purposes were:
-
To ascertain the various kinds of jobs held by workers in Nebraska.
-
To analyze the opinions of a sample of workers, in agricultural occupations, regarding the knowledges and skills needed to perform their jobs.
- To specifically identify jobs requiring knowledges and skills in agriculture.

Considerable research is currently being directed toward discovering means of controlling insects other than by applying insecticides. There are several promising concepts of control which minimize the use of insecticides and one of these is the use of sterilizing techniques. Some emphasis is currently being placed on the development of chemosterilant techniques. Many of the studies have been concerned with the screening of potentially active chemicals, whereas other research has dealt with the efficacy of field application. The more basic work has been accomplished through the participation of several disciplines. The purpose of this study was to characterize the effects …

The Chemistry Of Pesticides, Walter R. Benson
United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
Introduction
This review is limited to the structures and a few reactions of the pesticides mainly insecticides-that affect mammalian systems and that are the subject of papers by other authors in this monograph. There is no attempt to give a complete review of the chemistry of pesticides. It is intended only to show the breadth and depth of pesticide chemistry through the use of examples. With proper use of the references, and of the papers by Crosby, Freed and Montgomery, and Owens in this monograph, the reader will be able to find information for other chemicals.

Changes In Body Weight And Composition Of Adult Nongravid Female Rats Deprived Of Dietary Protein, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., C. F. Eisenhard, J. R. O'Connor
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Seventy-six young adult nongravid female rats of the Carworth strain were used in two experiments to study the effect of dietary protein deprivation on body weight, feed consumption, body composition and serum protein concentration. Semipurified diets containing glucose, corn oil, vitamins and minerals with or without casein (protein-free = PF, 14% casein = C) were fed ad libitum in both experiments to rats caged in individual wire-bottom cages. Feeding the PF diet for up to 26 days resulted in a continuous weight loss over the entire period. The average loss in body weight as a percentage of initial weight of …

Sweetclover-Weevil Feeding Deterrent B: Isolation And Identification, W. R. Akeson, H.J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Sweetclover-Weevil Feeding Deterrent B: Isolation And Identification, W. R. Akeson, H.J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Deterrent B, a compound apparently involved in the resistance of Melilotus infesta to the sweetclover weevil Sitona cylindricollis, has been isolated from leaves by a combination of preparative paper chromatography, sublimation, and crystallization. The compound has been identified as ammonium nitrate. Isolated deterrent B and ammonium nitrate have identical feeding deterrent activities. Although the deterrent principle was isolated as the ammonium salt, nitrate ion is probably responsible for the deterrent activity in vivo.

Quick Mix Yeast Rolls, Ethel Diedrichsen
Quick Mix Yeast Rolls, Ethel Diedrichsen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Baking with yeast is one of the nicest ways to treat your family and friends. Mixing the dough is easy and shaping it is fun. You can have that wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you serve fragrant, delicious, homemade rolls. . The quick mix method of making yeast rolls saves both time and energy. The yeast is mixed with a portion of the dry ingredients. Soft shortening and warm liquid are added and the mixture is beaten with an electric mixer to speed up gluten development. The remainder of the flour is stirred in by hand and the dough is …

A New Rhinoceros From The Nebraska Miocene, Lloyd G. Tanner
A New Rhinoceros From The Nebraska Miocene, Lloyd G. Tanner
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
A new species of rhinoceros, Menoceras marslandensis, is here proposed. It is based upon a nearly complete skull from the upper part of the Marsland Formation, Hemingford Group (Miocene), of Box Butte County, Nebraska. The new species was probably derived from Menoceras arikarense (Barbour), collected from the Agate Springs Quarries (Arikaree Group, Harrison Formation) of Sioux County, Nebraska, with which both Diceratherium niobrarensis Peterson and D. cooki Peterson are likely synonymous. From Menoceras arikarense, the presumed ancestral stock, Menoceras marslandensis differs in possessing the following characters: (1) very long, fused but slightly cleft, nasals, with flattened, rugose areas …
Engineering For Higher Yields, Yoshiaki Ishizuka
Engineering For Higher Yields, Yoshiaki Ishizuka
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
It was difficult for me to understand the meaning of "engineering" as used in the title of my speech. I asked Dr. Haskins who told me that the term engineering is used here because one traditional role of the engineer has been the application of scientific principles in the solution of practical problems, and that in this case we want to consider the application of biological principles in both past and future increases in crop yield. Accordingly, I intend to express my thoughts on this problem, and to ask your suggestions for obtaining higher and better yields in the future. …
Mechanisms Of Translocation Of Plant Metabolites, Orlin Biddulph
Mechanisms Of Translocation Of Plant Metabolites, Orlin Biddulph
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The mechanism of translocation has been discussed since the latter part of the 19th Century, when DeVries, in 1885, proposed protoplasmic streaming as the mechanism. Since that time O. F. Curtis, beginning about 1920, and more recently Thaine (1961) and Canny and Phillips (1963) have become interested in this approach to the problem. In the meantime Munch, in 1930, proposed a pressure flow mechanism based on a turgor pressure gradient in the phloem between metabolite supplying and metabolite consuming areas. These two mechanisms, and others, are fully discussed in Swanson (1959), so the present paper will deal with a compilation …
Levels Of Calcium And Phosphorus For Growing-Finishing Swine, G. W. Libal, E. R. Peo, Jr., R. P. Andrews, P. E. Vipperman, Jr.
Levels Of Calcium And Phosphorus For Growing-Finishing Swine, G. W. Libal, E. R. Peo, Jr., R. P. Andrews, P. E. Vipperman, Jr.
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The calcium and phosphorus requirements of growing-finishing swine have not been satisfactorily resolved. Recently it was suggested that levels of calcium and phosphorus needed in diets of growing-finishing (G-F) swine for optimum growth and feed conversion may be different from those needed for optimum bone development (Miller et al., 1960; Lloyd et al., 1961; Rutledge et al., 1961; Combs et al., 1966). The problem of determining calcium and phosphorus requirements is further magnified by the observation of Chapman et al. (1955) that G-F swine do not utilize plant phosphorus as efficiently as inorganic phosphorus. In …

Gaseous Exchange In Crop Stands, Edgar Lemon
Gaseous Exchange In Crop Stands, Edgar Lemon
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Man through the ages has evolved a strategy, albeit empirical, of manipulating the environment and the plant to his advantage. Practices such as fertilizing the soil, irrigation, weed control, and plant breeding and selection are common. Nonetheless, concentrated and coordinated efforts to understand the mechanisms controlling the whole soil-plant- atmosphere continuum is a new approach to finding new ways to favorably manipulate the whole system as well as predict response.
Conceptually and experimentally it has proven advantageous to view the total system in terms of energy, momentum, and mass exchange. This makes sense because in the first instance the foundations …
