Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Since 1965 the Canadian Wildlife Service has been concerned with the damage which birds cause in the orchards and vineyards of the Niagara fruit belt, in southern Ontario. My own contribution to this programme has been to collect information on the feeding be¬haviour and ecology of the birds concerned, and use this to test the effectiveness of various control systems. For the purposes of this seminar, I shall only deal with the damage which Robins do to sweet cherries. Here, I was particularly interested in whether it was possible to develop a "bird-proof cherry variety, which would settle the problem …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Birds are not concerned with the odors of their immediate environment. To a chicken, a starling or a cowbird, the odors of its environment are of little or no con-sequence. I am not saying that birds do not have the apparatus for olfaction, nor am I saying that no bird can smell. The kiwi of New Zealand is almost totally blind and does sniff. They do have "nostrils" on the tip of the bill. However, they are an unusual exception. If we place highly odoriferous material under one of two food choices and present them to domestic chickens or starlings, …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The specific objective of this research is to delineate efficient and inefficient economic performance areas and thereby locate the more significant problem aspects for research and program attention. Specific price analyses will be used to evaluate the price interrelationships for functional efficiency in the dimensions of space, form and time. Not only the efficient aspects of production and marketing will be indicated by the analyses but the inefficient aspects of economic performance will be stressed also. This research will provide some foundational information for making decisions, both public and private. Moreover, it will direct the attention of researchers or program …

Chemosterilants As An Approach To Rodent Control, Rex E. Marsh, Walter E. Howard
Chemosterilants As An Approach To Rodent Control, Rex E. Marsh, Walter E. Howard
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)
Capitalizing on research directed toward oral contraceptives for humans, a wide variety of compounds are now under study for their practical value in inhibiting rodent reproduction to suppress detrimental populations. This paper discusses the specifications of ideal rodent chemosterilants and the advantages of chemosterilants over other methods of control, and compares the potential values of chemosterilants acting on females, males, and both sexes. Specific situations are detailed where chemosterilants will be most valuable in rodent control, together with proposed methods of application. Chemosterilants are not expected to become a panacea for control, but since they are based on sound biological …
Rodent Control Problems In Developing Countries, Robert Z. Brown
Rodent Control Problems In Developing Countries, Robert Z. Brown
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)
None of the so-called developing countries has an adequate rodent control program at present. In only a few of these countries is any rodent control research occurring despite the fact that rodent problems are actually quite serious in many regions and potentially so in others. Expertise, techniques and materials from the developed countries are of limited usefulness because of major differences in rodent species involved, standards for food handling and sanitation, and in the cultural contexts in which rodent control must occur. Trained personnel, both for control work and the basic research needed, are in very short supply. In addition, …

Growth In Weight Of Selected Organs, Tissues And Systems In The Pig, William J. Loeffel, Robert M. Koch
Growth In Weight Of Selected Organs, Tissues And Systems In The Pig, William J. Loeffel, Robert M. Koch
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
As a result of investigations at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station in 1929, 1930 and 1931 to determine the effect of weight and degree of fatness of the pork carcass upon the quality and palatability of the meat, 40 pigs were slaughtered, five each at the approximate live weights of 70, 80, 90, 100, 115, 135, 160, and 180 kg. This corresponds to carcass weights ranging from 50 to 150 kg. The results of the meat investigations and feedlot data were reported elsewhere (Loeffel et al.,1943). This study reports data relative to the weight of selected tissues and organs, as …

Mite Transmission Of Plant Viruses, G.N. Oldfield
Mite Transmission Of Plant Viruses, G.N. Oldfield
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The subject of mite transmission of plant viruses has been reviewed several times by Slykhuis (122, 124,126,128). A considerable number of papers on this subject have been published since Slykhuis's last review; several constitute significant additions to the knowledge of the relationships between mites and the plant viruses they transmit.
Except, perhaps, for the apparent case of transmission of potato virus Y by Tetranychus telarius (107), the only proven mite vectors of plant viruses are certain members of the family Eriophyidae. In 1927, Amos et al. (2) reported a positive correlation between the infestation of black currants with the black …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The use of high concentrate rations in finishing cattle has led to a rather high loss of livers due to abscesses.
The 1967 Statistical Summary of the Federal Meat Inspection Service of the USDA indicated the total number of cattle inspected was 27,859,980. Of these, 9.6% were condemned because of liver abscess. Considering the value of a liver to be about $3, the estimated loss to the industry because of condemnatIon due to abscess would be over $8 million annually.
The incidence of liver abscesses increases as the roughage level in a finishing ration decreases below 5% (Table I). The …

Effect Of Feeding-Fasting Interval On Finishing Pigs: Weight Gain, Feed Utilization And Physical And Chemical Carcass Measurements, T. L. Veum, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., L. Krook
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Thirty-two Yorkshire pigs (49 kg body weight, 108 days of age) were used to determine the effect of feeding-fasting interval on rate of body weight gain, feed utilization and carcass and organ measurements at a slaughter weight of approximately 90 kilograms. Treatments were: (1) Continuous ad libitum feeding,(2) ad libitum 1 day, fasted on alternate days, (3) ad libitum 1 day, fasted 2 days, (4) ad libitum 1 day, fasted 3 days. Average daily gain was reduced progressively as severity of the fasting-feeding interval was increased. Efficiency of feed utilization, likewise, was reduced as the severity of feed restriction increased, …
Influence Of Dietary Supplements Of Vitamin D3 And Various Fats On Cholesterol And Fatty Acid Composition Of The Blood And Body Of Growing-Finishing Swine, M. H. Jurgens, E. R. Peo, Jr., P. E. Vipperman, Jr., R. W. Mandingo
W. Mandingo
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Previous work at this station suggested that vitamin D2, when fed with or without dietary cholesterol, depressed blood cholesterol levels of swine (Jurgens, Peo and Vipperman, 1967) and rats (Jurgens, Blunn and Peo, 1968). While not proven to be the cause, blood cholesterol levels have been used as one of the main criteria to estimate the development of atherosclerosis in man (Rabinowitz, Meyerson and Wohl, 1960; Swell, Law and Treadwell, 1962). Several investigators have reported that supplementation of unsaturated fats (Ahrens et al., 1957; Okey and Lyman, 1957; Avigan and Steinberg, 1958; Peifer, 1966) and especially linoleic …

Ec70-951 Swiss Fondue, Ethel Diedrichsen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Cheese Fondue is a Swiss national dish which combines cheese and bread. In years past, quantities of bread and cheese were made during the winter for use throughout the year. Gradually, both became very hard. To make them more edible, the cheese was melted and the bread dunked in this mixture.
Fondue to served informally in a festive atmosphere. Each person spears a piece of crusty bread with a fork, going through the soft part first to secure the points in the crust. The bread is dunked in the fondue with a stirring motion.
This extension circular discusses the fondue …

Game meats, like domestic meats, are best when properly dressed and cooked. Good eating depends upon the treatment the animal receives when killed. For high quality meat, the animal should be promptly bled, dressed and cooked under sanitary conditions. Much good game is ruined because this procedure is not followed.
This Extension circular covers the handling of wild game and includes recipes for all wild game.
