Availability Of Trypotophan In Some Feedstuffs For Swine, Pedro H. Rivera L., E. R. Peo, Jr., T. Stahly, B. D. Moser, P. J. Cunningham

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two experiments were conducted to determine the availability of tryptophan (Try) from corn (NC), opaque-2 corn (OC), milo (M) and freeze dried alfalfa (FDA) when fed to swine. The first experiment consisted of a growth trial involving 96 baby pigs and eight treatments. The basal diet containing .06% Try and 24.5% protein was supplemented with .015%, .030% and .045% L-Try. These four diets were used to establish a standard curve for growth. The other treatments were formed by adding the feedstuffs as the source of Try to the basal diet. Availabilities were determined by comparing growth responses. Try availabilities from …

Lake Nicaragua Fishery Resources, William D. Davies Jan 1976

Lake Nicaragua Fishery Resources, William D. Davies

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

Data collected during this survey indicated that the number of full-time fishermen has not increased appreciably over the past several years. However, it is likely that, if the demand for fish were to increase, a number of the present part-time fishermen would increase their effort to full-time. Indications are strong that the fish catch from this lake could at least be doubled by the existing population of fishermen, using the same gear, if market conditions were such as to encourage greater fishing effort.
The lake's overall fisheries resources are far from being exploited to their maximum, with the possible exception …

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

Protein deficiency is a major dietary problem in Central America where protein-rich foods are scarce and costly. Fish, however, represents a rich source of animal protein that is not being utilized to a significant extent. Moreover, it is a source that could be made available to large portions of the populations of these countries if improvements of the present fishing and distribution methods were realized. Prerequisite to expansion, however, is a basic understanding of the ecosystems and their components. It is at this preliminary stage that the situation presently lies. Once this understanding has been achieved, means of maximizing production …

Modified Milling Procedure For Separating Endosperm And Nonendosperm Portions Of The Wheat Kernel For Protein And Lysine Analysis, Kenneth P. Vogel, P. J. Mattern, G. W. Lenser Jan 1976

Modified Milling Procedure For Separating Endosperm And Nonendosperm Portions Of The Wheat Kernel For Protein And Lysine Analysis, Kenneth P. Vogel, P. J. Mattern, G. W. Lenser

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Conventional milling does not uniformly separate endospt: rm and nonendosperm components of wheats (Triticure aestivum L.). Uniform separation of bran and endosperm is required for protein and lysine analyses because of a prolein gradient in wheat endosperm. A modified milling procedure for separating endosperm and nonendosperm cemponents of the wheat kernel was evaluated for its utility in processing small breeder lots of seed for protein and lysine analyses. After conventional milling and sifting, the endosperm adhering to the bran was removed by washing with a 80:20 (vol/vol) ethanol:acetone solution, filtered from the washing solution, dried, and added to the …

Bobwhite Quail Food Habits In The Southeastern United States With A Seed Key To Important Foods, J. Larry Landers, A. Sydney Johnson

Galliformes Specialist Group and Affiliated Societies: Reports and Other Materials

A search of the literature revealed 27 studies of food habits of bobwhite quail in the southeastern United States. These include data from nearly 20 ,000 birds. In this publication all seed foods reported in these studies are listed and evaluated, and a key to important species is included. Over 650 seed foods are listed, and volume and frequency classes are given for each seed food as reported in each study. Only 78 foods comprised 1 percent or more of the food volume in one or more studies. The 45 most important foods are ranked for each physiographic province. The …

Reevaluation Of Common Wheats From The Usda World Wheat Collection For Protein And Lysine Content, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern Nov 1975

Reevaluation Of Common Wheats From The Usda World Wheat Collection For Protein And Lysine Content, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The protein and lysine content of wheat can be altered by breeding only if genetic variability exists for these traits. Lysine is a nutritionally limiting amino acid in wheat protein. Protein and lysine analyses of the common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection indicated that variability does exist for these traits. Some of the variability for protein and lysine among wheats of the World Collection may not be genetic in origin, because all the 12,000 wheats analyzed were not grown in the same environment. The purpose of this study was to reevaluate selected lines from the World Wheat Collection …

Lipid Metabolism During Bacterial Growth, Sporulation, And Germination: An Obligate Nutritional Requirement In Bacillus Thuringiensis For Compounds That Stimulate Fatty Acid Synthesis, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Lee A. Bulla Jr. Aug 1975

Bulla Jr.

Papers in Microbiology

The regulation of fatty acid biosynthesis by compounds that are required for growth of Bacillus thuringiensis was investigated using an in vivo assay developed to measure fatty acid synthesis in germinating spores. A minimal glucoseammonium- salts medium does not support growth even though previous radiorespirometric studies have shown B. thuringiensis to possess intact tricarboxylic acid and Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathways. Abundant growth does occur, however, when this medium is supplemented with either glutamate, aspartate, citrate, thiosulfate, cystine, or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Cells held under non-growing conditions incorporate acetate into fatty acids; fatty acid synthesis is stimulated by the compounds that permit growth. These …

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Outdoor Beef Cattle Feedlot Runoff, C. B. Gilbertson, J. R. Ellis, J. A. Nienaber, T. M. Mccalla, T. J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Within the past decade, emphasis has been placed on the quality of our environment. Beef cattle feedlots have been singled out as a significant source of environmental pollution. Environmental protection provided by control facilities requires basic knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of feedlot runoff. This bulletin summarizes studies of physical and chemical properties of beef cattle feedlot runoff completed from August, 1968 through December, 1972.

Sodium Bentonite In Ruminant Rations, Daniel P. Colling Jul 1975

Sodium Bentonite In Ruminant Rations, Daniel P. Colling

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Sodium bentonite, an expanding clay, is being used in many different ways in industry today. The livestock and feed industry, for example, use it in many different ways.It is used as a pellet binder to maintain a fat test in dairy animals, as a digestive aid in the poultry industry and as a “buffering agent” in feedlot rations.

A two-pronged investigation was undertaken to determine the effect sodium bentonite could have on the ruminant feeding industry. One part of the investigation sought to determine if bentonite could partially or entirely alleviate subclinical lactic acidosis with problem rations. The other part of the investigation …

Reproductive Efficiency Of Jerseys, Red Sindhis, And Crossbreds, R. E. Mcdowell, B. F. Hollow, J. K. Camoens, L. Dale Van Vleck May 1975

Reproductive Efficiency Of Jerseys, Red Sindhis, And Crossbreds, R. E. Mcdowell, B. F. Hollow, J. K. Camoens, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Ten measures related to breeding efficiency were used for comparisons among pure Jerseys and Red Sindhis and crossbreds with ¾, ½, or ¼ European dairy inheritance (Brown Swiss, Holstein, or Jersey) at two locations. Jerseys and crossbreds were common to both herds with Sindhis only at Jeanerette. Means for age at puberty (first estrus after 12 mo) were 425 ± 4.2, 434 ± 6.9, 459 ± 6.9, 504 ± 14.1, and 717 ± 40.4 days for Jerseys, crosses of ¾, ½, or ¼ and Sindhi. The increase in age of puberty was additive but not entirely. The ¾and ½ tended …

Soybeans -- What To Look For In 1975, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1975

Soybeans -- What To Look For In 1975, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I have just returned from a tour of our major farm product customers in the Far East -- Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines. The most impressive thing I found there was the forward-looking spirit of these nations, and their driving determination to continue their economic growth in spite of the world's current energy and inflation problems.

All of these nations are vitally interested in American farm products, with soybeans high on their priority lists. All of them are looking past the current recession atmosphere, and planning for the future. All of them have more protein for their diets as …

Growth Potential Of Sandhills Ranches Through Irrigation, R. D. Carver, G. A. Helmers Jan 1975

Growth Potential Of Sandhills Ranches Through Irrigation, R. D. Carver, G. A. Helmers

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The purpose of this study was to compare extensive and intensive growth strategies of a typical Nebraska Sandhills ranch in a dynamic and uncertain environment. Study objectives were to: (1) Analyze growth of an average ranch firm of 450 animal units as it grows to 600-900 animal units. (2) Study the effects of an uncertain environment on the long-run growth opportunities of a ranch firm. (3) Compare extensive and intensive growth of a ranch firm.
