Characterization Of Xanthomonas Phaseoli Bacteriophages, Anne K. Vidaver, Max L. Schuster
Characterization Of Xanthomonas Phaseoli Bacteriophages, Anne K. Vidaver, Max L. Schuster
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Ten bacteriophages for Xanthomonas phaseoli were characterized. On the basis of adsorption rates, latent period and burst size, plaque morphology, host range, efficiency of plating, ultrastructure, sensitivity to osmotic shock, streptomycin sensitivity, temperature effects on plating efficiency, and serology, the phages were separated into at least three groups. Some of the phages were infectious for Pseudomonas phaseolicola (four strains) and P. syringae (one strain) in a narrow temperature range. The taxonomic and ecological significance of this finding is discussed.

Transferable Drug Resistance Among Enterobacteriaceae Isolated From Human Urinary Tract Infections, Donna G. Sieckmann, Norman D. Reed, Carl E. Georgi
Transferable Drug Resistance Among Enterobacteriaceae Isolated From Human Urinary Tract Infections, Donna G. Sieckmann, Norman D. Reed, Carl E. Georgi
Papers in Microbiology
Fifteen sulfonamide-resistant cultures isolated from urinary tract infections in eastern Nebraska were screened for transferable drug resistance by three methods. Seven of the 15 resistant cultures could transfer resistance of varying levels to two or more chemotherapeutic agents. Transfer of drug resistance occurred without accompanying transfer of chromosomal traits and required cell to cell contact. In mixed culture, the number of drug-resistant recipients increased exponentially, reaching a plateau 2 hr after mixing. Spontaneous or artificial elimination of resistance was found to be a rare event. In addition, several drug-sensitive isolates from urinary tract infections were shown to be competent recipients …

Western Ironweed: Research On Anatomy, Physiology, Life History And Control, M. K. Mccarty, C. J. Scifres
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Western ironweed (Vernonia baldwini Torr.) is a member of a widespread and diverse genus. The genus is characterized by perennial herbs and shrubs. Weaver and Darland listed the increase of western ironweed, at one time sparsely distributed, as an indication of degeneration of the true prairie. They described the invasion, spread, and ultimate dominance of western ironweed in many pastures after the drought years. Weaver measured ironweed roots to a depth of 11 or 12 ft., and remarked that it was one of "the most abundant and worst weeds in native pastures derived from the true prairie." Research has …

Some Factors Affecting Germination And Seedling Growth Of Scotch Thistle, C. J. Scifres, M. K. Mccarty
Some Factors Affecting Germination And Seedling Growth Of Scotch Thistle, C. J. Scifres, M. K. Mccarty
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Scotch thistle (Onopordum acanthium L.) is a native of Eurasia. Scotch thistle is found in the grasslands of central Nebraska, with heaviest infestations in Gosper, Dawson, and Valley Counties and limited occurrence in 18 additional counties. The Nebraska Unicameral declared it a noxious weed in 1965. This study measures the effects of some environmental factors on scotch thistle germination and seedling growth, and clarifies some of the interactions of these with inherent characteristics of the achene. The effect of achene coat, stratification, light, temperature, growth regulators, pH, depth of planting, salinity, germination inhibitors, and moisture stress were studied.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The present study was conducted to determine the effects of some simulated environmental variables on the germination of musk and plumeless thistle achenes. The two species appear to occupy a somewhat similar role in the natural vegetation, and a direct comparison of germination characteristics was sought.
Penicillium Urticae Bainier Enumeration In Soils, Fred A. Norstadt, T. M. Mccalla
Penicillium Urticae Bainier Enumeration In Soils, Fred A. Norstadt, T. M. Mccalla
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Studies of stubble-mulched soils from three locations in Nebraska showed larger total counts (bacteria and actinomycetes) and fungi than in plowed soils. Penicilliurn urticae Bainier numbers increased in subtilled soil compared with either plowed soil or subtilled soil with crop residues removed.** P. urticae B. produces patulin, a phytotoxic substance. This organism is regarded as one of the possible sources of the toxicity problem arising in stubble mulching. Penicillium expansum Link and patulin were studied in the apple replant problem.
The purpose of this paper is to present methods to estimate P. urticae B. numbers in soils and demonstrate patulin …

Sweetclover-Weevil Feeding Deterrent B: Isolation And Identification, W. R. Akeson, H.J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Deterrent B, a compound apparently involved in the resistance of Melilotus infesta to the sweetclover weevil Sitona cylindricollis, has been isolated from leaves by a combination of preparative paper chromatography, sublimation, and crystallization. The compound has been identified as ammonium nitrate. Isolated deterrent B and ammonium nitrate have identical feeding deterrent activities. Although the deterrent principle was isolated as the ammonium salt, nitrate ion is probably responsible for the deterrent activity in vivo.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Musk thistle (Carduus nutans L.) was added to the Nebraska noxious weed list in 1959. The objectives of this study were: (a) to determine the normal life cycle of musk thistle in Nebraska; (b) to determine the variations from the normal life cycle of musk thistle; and (c) to furnish a summary of the phenology for musk thistle in southeastern Nebraska. Observations are used freely throughout the text to describe morphological variations occurring within musk thistle that are not easily quantified.
Physiological Responses To Nitrogen In Plants, Yoshio Murata
Physiological Responses To Nitrogen In Plants, Yoshio Murata
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Recent advances in crop physiology have given us some clues for analysis of the complex relationships of environmental factors, cultural conditions and genetic factors to crop yield. However, in order to accomplish this analysis, it is quite necessary to have concrete knowledge about the causal relationships and the time sequence of the processes of yield-formation.
In grain crops, the process of yield-formation may be divided into the following three phases:
1) Formation of organs for nutrient absorption and photosynthesis,
2) Formation of flower organs and "yield-container," and
3) Production, accumulation and translocation of "yield-contents."
The effect of nitrogen, which has …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The gonads of Deontostoma californicum were isolated from the organismal environment by dissection. In an attempt to approximate the in vivo condition and to maintain in vitro architecture and function ten media recommended for the culture of insect cells or organs were tested. The media were prepared in two series: one according to published recommendations and the second substituting filtered seawater for the inorganic salts and distilled water. Media were prepared as both liquid and gel (agar) with and without antibiotics. Whole animals and eggs were placed on the same culture media series as the ovarial explants. Ovarial explant reaction …
Legal Aspects Of The Fair Trial–Free Press Controversy: The Reardon Report Considered, M. Douglas Deitchler, Howard Fredrick Hahn
Legal Aspects Of The Fair Trial–Free Press Controversy: The Reardon Report Considered, M. Douglas Deitchler, Howard Fredrick Hahn
Nebraska Law Review
The approved draft of Standards Relating to Fair Trial and Free Press, generally referred to as the Reardon Report, is the organized bar's response to the necessity for guaranteeing a fair trial while still allowing as much publicity as is possible. The standards promulgated are merely recommendations which the eleven-member drafting committee has proposed for adoption by the appropriate authorities in the various jurisdictions. If not so adopted they will in no way affect the particular jurisdiction. However, having the prestige of the American Bar Association House of Delegates behind it, the Reardon Report bears analysis, as its …
Life Insurance As A Personal Savings Vehicle, Vane B. Lucas
Life Insurance As A Personal Savings Vehicle, Vane B. Lucas
Nebraska Law Review
Through the medium of life insurance, millions of individuals have accumulated savings while providing protection for their families. Insurance companies have pooled these savings and injected them back into the financial bloodstream of the economy. This pool of investment funds has helped to achieve increasingly greater productivity and has raised the standard of living in our society. This article seeks to explain how life insurance functions as a vehicle for personal savings. The protection element of life insurance is related to the level premium concept of funding insurance. The savings element of life insurance is then discussed and related to …

Use Of Strychnine Treated Grain For Industrial Pigeon Control, Joseph Watkins
Use Of Strychnine Treated Grain For Industrial Pigeon Control, Joseph Watkins
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The pest bird involved in nearly 100% of our jobs has been the pigeon. We don't do killing in residential areas, nor have we done killing in downtown areas. All of our work has been confined to industrial plants and commercial buildings where strychnine, and we have used other methods that can kill the birds. In these plants we have had some problems with industrial or labor re-lations. These have been coped with by working with the union, with the labor relation people, and as high up as purchasing level. First of all we think that with strychnine if we …
A Conservation Department Approach To Environmental Contamination And Surveillance Problems, Leroy J. Korschgen
A Conservation Department Approach To Environmental Contamination And Surveillance Problems, Leroy J. Korschgen
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Historically, the Conservation Commission has allied itself with other state, federal, and private agencies that are concerned with control and management of wildlife. It was suggested about a year ago that a Memorandum of Understanding, specifying the policy and procedure for bird control and rat and mouse control by the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife in Missouri, would be desirable. Subsequent discussion with Bureau representatives led to the conclusion that a formal memorandum of understanding was unnecessary. The primary purpose of such documents is to formalize operating procedures in states where the Bureau carries on a continuous control program …

To Kill Or Not To Kill : That Is The Question, John R. Beck, William J. Spitz
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
In talking with the panel that has agreed to be with you this morning, we find that almost to a man they feel very strongly there is no "it" in bird control, that a good applicator needs to be well balanced and well rounded, that he needs to know, far more than one approach, that he needs to be able to understand people, biological problems, ecology, eco-nomics, and several other factors. The idea that sometimes comes across in meetings such as this is, and rightly so in some instances, "I have the final answer." Gentlemen, there is no "it" in …
Relationship Between Protein And Ribonucleic Acid Synthesis During Outgrowth Of Spores Of Bacillus Cereus, S. Rodenberg, W. Steinberg, J. Piper, Kenneth W. Nickerson, J. Vary, R. Epstein, H.O. Halvorson
Relationship Between Protein And Ribonucleic Acid Synthesis During Outgrowth Of Spores Of Bacillus Cereus, S. Rodenberg, W. Steinberg, J. Piper, Kenneth W. Nickerson, J. Vary, R. Epstein, H.O. Halvorson
Papers in Microbiology
The rate of protein and ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis was examined during the outgrowth of spores of Bacillus cereus T in a chemically defined medium. RNA synthesis started 2.5 min after the initiation of germination, and protein synthesis after 4 min. Addition of a complete amino acid supplement and uracil supported high rates of RNA and protein synthesis throughout outgrowth. To determine the relationship between the rate of protein (k) and RNA synthesis, the kinetics of formation of various classes of RNA were followed during outgrowth. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) comprised a relatively constant fraction of the total RNA …
The Biology Of Choristoneura Houstonana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), A Pest Of Juniperus Species, E. A. Heinrichs, Hugh E. Thompson
The Biology Of Choristoneura Houstonana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), A Pest Of Juniperus Species, E. A. Heinrichs, Hugh E. Thompson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Choristoneura houstonana (Grote) lays eggs singly in July. Egg development ranged from 8 to 11 days, with the majority hatching 10 days after oviposition. Larvae are solitary, and mine during early instars, but later instars feed externally on leaves in shelters made by webbing foliage together. There is one generation each year, and overwintering occurs in a hibernaculum, in mined leaves. Field-collected head-capsule width frequencies indicated nine larval instars. Rearing larvae on seedling junipers indoors indicated a range of 8–11 instars. Pupation occurs during June and July in the shelter where the larva feeds. The pupal stage lasted about 10 …

Response Of Nai(T1) To Energetic Heavy Ions, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich
Robert Katz Publications
Experimental values of the relative heights of scintillation pulses generated in NaI(T1) crystals, by heavy ions (Z>5) of energy 1-10 MeV/amu, agree well with computed relative cross sections for photon production, from a theory based on the assumption of a one-hit response to the spatially distributed dose of ionization energy, and a characteristic dose of 4x107 erg/cm3 for this material Discrepancies between theory and experiment for He bombardments arise from the theoretical neglect of the nonlinear dose variation over the sensitive volume surrounding each TI atom. Similar discrepancies arising from the neglect of molecular volume occur …
The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges
The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Because children’s literature is considered to be a development of the past two centuries, it is generally believed that there are differences between children's literature and adult literature. The majority of people who have written extensively about children's literature have been primarily concerned with those differences. I too believe that there are differences between children's literature and adult literature; but those differences seem to me to be neither as extensive nor as significant as has been commonly assumed. What are the differences? Can they be described? Are there also significant similarities between children's literature and adult literature?
I believe that …

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
I believe that there are features common to both children is and adult literature, and that those similarities are much more important to a proper understanding of children's literature than are the differences that exist. This study. will carry the burden of proof for that belief. If goad children's literature is susceptible to serious interpretive criticism, and I believe that it is, it is so primarily because of what it contains in common with general. literary tradition rather than because of what it contains different from general. literary tradition. The complexity of the children's books that I will analyze in …
