Adsorption Of The Herbicides Diuron, Terbacil, And Simazine To Blueberry Mulches, Laurie Hodges, Ronald E. Talbert

Samples of soil, mulch, and the soil/mulch interface zone were collected from commercial highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) fields typical in their use of mulch under Arkansas conditions. Mulches included 1-year-old hardwood sawdust, 5-year-old hardwood sawdust, and 1-year-old pine needle mulch. Herbicide adsorption (Kd values) of the samples was determined for diuron, terbacil, and simazine. The soils, mulches, and interfaces adsorbed nearly 10 times as much diuron and more than twice as much simazine as terbacil. Efficacy Of A Cell Extract From Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) Pleuropneumoniae Serotype 1 Against Disease In Swine, P. J. Fedorka-Cray, M.J. Huether, D.L. Stine, G. A. Anderson

We partially characterized a cell extract (CE) from Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 1 and used the CE to test the efficacy of secreted proteins against disease. Secreted products from 4-h culture supernatants were precipitated with 20% polyethylene glycol. Analysis of the CE indicated the presence of protein, endotoxin, and carbohydrate. Hemolytic activity to bovine erythrocytes and cytotoxic activity to porcine mononuclear leukocytes was also demonstrated. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of the CE from a 4-h culture showed a major band at 110 kilodaltons (kDa), while a CE of a 26-h culture indicated the presence of a number of additional …

In vitro mutagenesis was used to create putative opal suppressor alleles of a tRNA^Trp gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The construct with the requisite anticodon change did not result in an active suppressor, whereas when a second change was introduced into the portion of the gene encoding the intron, an active and specific opal suppressor was produced. We propose that the secondary structure of transcripts from the first mutant may prevent efficient pre-tRNA processing, whereas normal processing occurs with the double mutant.

Stability Of Iaa And Iba In Nutrient Medium To Several Tissue Culture Procedures, Scott Nissen, Ellen Sutter

The relative stabilities of IAA and IBA under various tissue culture procedures were determined. IBA was significantly more stable than IAA to autoclaving. IBA was also found to be more stable than IAA in liquid Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) under growth chamber conditions. The stabilities of IBA and IAA were similar in agar-solidified MS. Light provided by cool-white fluorescent bulbs promoted degradation of IAA and IBA in both liquid and agar media. Activated charcoal in concentrations as high as 5% was found to adsorb more than 97% of IAA and IBA in liquid MS. These results have important implications …

In American Ritual Dramas: Social Rules and Cultural Meanings (Greenwood Press, 1989), Mary Jo Deegan presents a theory of core codes and communitas that implicitly challenges the present organization of sociological practice in bureaucratic structures such as universities. The rituals of modern academic sociology are permeated by the same core codes that Deegan finds in many modern participatory and media-constructed rituals, specifically: the codes of oppression (class and sex codes) and the codes of repression (bureaucracy and time codes). The "pollens" group of Cerceris is established for C. furcifera Schletterer (Paraguay), C. mariusi sp. n. (Paraguay), C. nigrosa sp. n. (Argentina), C. pollens Schletterer (Argentina and Paraguay), C. serrana sp. n. (Argentina), and C. willineri Fritz (Argentina), and the "rugulosa" group for C. rugulosa Schrottky (Argentina). A key to the species of the "pollens" group is included. The subspecies Cerceris r. dismorphia Schrottky is not regarded as valid.

Spindrift Gazes is a collection of short stories that thematically relate to how human dignity is engendered and how that sense of dignity is challenged, undercut, and regained. These fictional constructions are particularly concerned with issues of transformation, how and why change takes place. Of particular emphasis is how differing kinds of human relationships are instrumental in the nature of those changes. Of fundamental concern is to give fictional form to human rights issues.

Murine monoclonal antibodies, developed following immunization with human protein C, were characterized for their ability tboin d antigen in thpe resence of either CaClz or excess EDTA. Three stablec lones were obtained which produced antiboditehsa t bound to protein C only itnh e presence of EDTA. Allt hree antibodies bound to the light choafi np rotein C on immunoblots and also bound to the homologous proteins factor X and prothrombin in solid-phase radioimmunoassays.
