Mitochondrial DNA was amplified and sequenced from eastern, western, and Egyptian strains of alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal). Eastern and Egyptian weevils differed at only 2 nucleotide sites in 1,031 base pairs sequenced; western weevils differed by 5% sequence divergence. Three restriction sites were identified which separated eastern and western haplotypes. No intrastrain polymorphism was detected in 150 weevils from Nebraska. Collections from Lincoln in eastern Nebraska and Scottsbluff in western Nebraska were fixed for the eastern and western haplotypes, respectively. Eastern and western haplotypes were found together in the same fields in a broad overlap region in central Nebraska.

Grazing Systems Utilizing Forage Combinations, Drew Shain, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock, Mark Klemesrud
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Grazing bromegrass throughout the summer provides weight gains of up to two pounds a day during early and late summer. However, during July and August bromegrass growth and quality is low and weight gains of cattle grazing bromegrass are reduced. Grazing combinations of warm and cool season forages allows for optimizing forage quality by rotating to warm season grasses during July and August. Another alternative may be to interseed red clover in bromegrass to optimize forage quality. Inter-seeding red clover would provide a higher quality forage when bromegrass growth and quality is low and, in addition, provide a source of …

Joan Huber, Irving Louis Horowitz, And The Ideological Future Of Objectivity In American Sociology, Michael R. Hill
Joan Huber, Irving Louis Horowitz, And The Ideological Future Of Objectivity In American Sociology, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The occasion of this essay is an unsolicited but welcome invitation to comment on Irving Louis Horowitz's (1993) most recent book, The Decomposition of Sociology, a work that is generating considerable discussion (e.g., Bauer Mengelberg 1995; Chriss 1994; Goldman 1994; Horowitz 1994, 1995; Pizzorno 1994; Wagner 1994). An invitation to discuss a book by Horowitz in a public forum-to which he is invited to respond-is a genuine honor eagerly accepted here with what is undoubtedly a too small twinge of apprehension, a twinge of the minimally regarded kind that allows proverbial fools to rush into intellectual tight spots from which …

The Effects Of Environment Dynamism And Heterogeneity On Salespeople's Role Perceptions, Performance And Job Satisfaction, Ravipreet S. Sohi
Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications
This article develops a structural equations model which examines the effects of environmental dynamism and heterogeneity on salespeople’s role conflict, role ambiguity, performance and job satisfaction. The model is tested with EQS, using data collected from 230 salespeople in multiple companies and industries. Indicates that environmental dynamism reduces satisfaction and performance, and increases role conflict and ambiguity. Notes that environmental heterogeneity also reduces performance and increases role conflict, but does not have a significant effect on role ambiguity.

Membrane Topology Of The Colicin A Pore-Forming Domain Analyzed By Disulfide Bond Engineering, Denis Duche, Jacques Izard, Juan M. Gonzalez-Manas, Michael W. Parker, Marcel Crest, Daniel Baty
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Four colicin A double-cysteine mutants possessing a disulfide bond in their pore-forming domain were constructed to study the translocation and the pore formation of colicin A. The disulfide bonds connected a-helices 1 and 2, 2 and 10, 3 and 9, or 3 and 10 of the poreforming domain. The disulfide bonds did not prevent the colicin A translocation through the Escherichia coli envelope. However, the mutated colicins were able to exert their in vivo channel activity only after reduction of their disulfide bonds. In vitro studies with brominated phospholipid vesicles and planar lipid bilayers revealed that the disulfide bond that …
Occurrence Of Selected Pesticides And Their Metabolites In Near-Surface Aquifers Of The Midwestern United States, Dana Kolpin, E. Michael Thurman, Donald Goolsby
Occurrence Of Selected Pesticides And Their Metabolites In Near-Surface Aquifers Of The Midwestern United States, Dana Kolpin, E. Michael Thurman, Donald Goolsby
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The occurrence and distribution of selected pesticides and their metabolites were investigated through the collection of 837 water-quality samples from 303 wells across the Midwest. Results of this study showed that five of the six most frequently detected compounds were pesticide metabolites. Thus, it was common for a metabolite to be found more frequently in groundwater than its parent compound. The metabolite alachlor ethanesulfonic acid (alachlor- ESA; 2-[(2,6-diethylphenyl)(methoxymethyl)amino]-2- oxoethanesulfonic acid) was detected almost 10 times as frequently and at much higher concentrations than its parent compound alachlor (2-chloro-2',6'- diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide). The median detectable atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6- isopropylamino-s-triazine) concentration was almost half that …

Analysis Of Aerial Photography For Nitrogen Stress Within Corn Fields, Tracy M. Blackmer, James S. Schepers, Gary E. Varvel, George Meyer
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Spatial variability of soil parameters within fields complicates N fertilizer recommendations for corn (Zea mays L.) production. Thus, the ability to identify differences in crop N status within corn fields could lead to efficiencies in N fertilizer application and decreased ground water pollution. In this study, we digitized aerial color photographic transparencies using an eight-bit scheme to generate digital counts for the red, green, and blue primary colors in the photographs at the R5 growth stage and related them to grain yield. Digital count responses were relative to the N treatment in which grain yield plateaued. Experiments were conducted …

Media Effects On Phenotype Of Callus Cultures Initiated From Photoperiod-Insensitive, Elite Inbred Sorghum Lines, H. F. Kaeppler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is a crop of worldwide agronomic importance. Routine production of high quality (friable, embryogenic, fast growing) callus cultures is fundamental to tissue culture based genetic study and improvement of sorghum. Genotype by culture medium interactions for sorghum callus growth and morphology have been previously reported. The objective of this study was to identify tissue culture media that would support high quality callus growth across photoperiod insensitive, relatively elite genotypes. Explants from immature inflorescences of 11 sorghum genotypes were cultured on 6 tissue culture media of differing composition. After 3 and 5 months in culture, calli …
Role Of The Escherichia Coli Fadr Regulator In Stasis Survival And Growth Phase-Dependent Expression Of The Uspa, Fad, And Fab Genes, Anne Farewell, Alfredo A. Diez, Concetta C. Dirusso, Thomas Nyström
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The increased expression of the uspA gene of Escherichia coli is an essential part of the cell’s response to growth arrest. We demonstrate that stationary-phase activation of the uspA promoter is in part dependent on growth phase-dependent inactivation or repression of the FadR regulator. Transcription of uspA is derepressed during exponential growth in fadR null mutants or by including the fatty acid oleate in the growth medium of FadR1 cells. The results of DNA footprinting analysis show that FadR binds downstream of the uspA promoter in the noncoding region. Thus, uspA is a member of the fadR regulon. All …

Carmine-Propionic Acid Stain For Elucidation Of Fine Cellular Structure In Nematodes, Alexander V. Khrustalev, Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Carmine-propionic acid staining was found to enhance the elucidation of cellular membranes in the esophagus and genital tract and the structure of sperm in strongylate nematodes. This regressive staining technique may also have general utility for differentiation of cellular membranes and nuclear structure in other taxa of parasitic helminths.

A Practitioner’S Guide To General Order 95-10: Mediation Plan For The United States District Court Of Nebraska, Mark R. Privratsky
Nebraska Law Review
The judiciary, which once viewed private adjudication as an infringement on the jurisdiction of the courts, now sees alternatives as offering welcome relief to the courts while providing significant advantages to litigants. Such alternatives include negotiation, mediation, arbitration, the summary jury trial, early neutral evaluation, the mini-trial, reference procedures, and med-arb. Because the proliferation of alternative dispute resolution programs has resulted in widespread interest in how they work and what they can be expected to accomplish, and because the United States District Court for the District of Nebraska has recently adopted General Order 95-1012 directing federal judges to suggest certain …
The Impact Of Humor On Energy, Tension, Task Choices, And Attributions: Exploring Hypotheses From Toughness Theory, Richard A. Dienstbier
The Impact Of Humor On Energy, Tension, Task Choices, And Attributions: Exploring Hypotheses From Toughness Theory, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Hypotheses derived from toughness theory suggest that nonaggressive humor should lead to increased feelings of energy without influencing tension, to preferences for studying materials that require more effort and energy, and to ratings of mundane laboratory activities as more challenging but not more threatening. Eighty-one college-age men and women were randomly assigned to watch a 12-minute video of Bill Cosby's humor or to watch a nonhumorous control video that analyzed the Cosby comedy routine. The humor condition resulted in significant increases in feelings of energy but not in feelings of tension. The other hypotheses were also confirmed except that performance …

Ultrasonic Radiative Transfer In Polycrystalline Media: Effects Of A Fluid–Solid Interface, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver
Ultrasonic Radiative Transfer In Polycrystalline Media: Effects Of A Fluid–Solid Interface, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
In previous derivations of the ultrasonic radiative transfer equation (URTE) for the modeling of multiply scattered diffuse ultrasound in polycrystalline media, the boundary conditions appropriate to experiments performed in a water bath were not used. In the present work, this fluid–solid boundary condition is discussed as it applies to the URTE. An interpolation scheme is developed that is consistent with the discrete ordinates method used for the solution of the URTE. Steady-state and time-dependent results are presented for the solution of the URTE with a fluid–solid boundary condition. The steady-state results show that diffusive behavior is exhibited nearer the specimen …
From Deer Problem To People Solution: A Case Study From Montgomery County, Maryland, Jonathan S. Kays, Douglas Tregoning
From Deer Problem To People Solution: A Case Study From Montgomery County, Maryland, Jonathan S. Kays, Douglas Tregoning
Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 7th (1995)
Montgomery County, Maryland, a 495 square-mile area adjacent to Washington, D.C., is a rapidly developing, highly educated suburban community with one of the highest per capita incomes in the nation. There is increasing concern for the growth and impact of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations by agricultural interests, resource professionals and residential landowners. The Montgomery County Council assembled a task force of stakeholders to examine relevant information and propose deer management options. The task force report provided detailed information on the county deer situation, 11 management alternatives, and 9 final recommendations. The county parks administrator appointed a staff …

Mississippi's Beaver Control Assistance Program, 1989-1994, Philip Mastrangelo
Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 7th (1995)
Responding to landowner requests, the 1989 Mississippi Legislature created the Beaver Control Advisory Hoard and mandated it to develop a program which would ensure the control of beaver damage throughout Mississippi. The Advisory Board is comprised of the administrative heads of five state agencies: the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (chairperson), the Department of Transportation, the Cooperative Extension Service, the Forestry Commission, and the Department of Agriculture and Commerce. In cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Animal Damage Control (ADC) program, the Advisory Board developed the Beaver Control Assistance Program (BCAP). …

Black Bear Damage Management In Washington State, Georg J. Ziegltrum, Dale L. Nolte
Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference: 7th (1995)
Black bears (Ursus americanus) foraging on trees can be extremely detrimental to the health and economic value of a timber stand. A supplemental feeding program to reduce bear damage is coordinated by the Washington Forest Protection Association's Animal Damage Control Program (ADCP). A brief overview of the ADCP is provided along with a description of bear damage and the supplemental feeding program. Success of the feeding program is demonstrated by an increasing participation and its general acceptance by the public. Timber producers placed over 400 thousand pounds of pellets in 700 feeding stations this past year.

High Resolution Electron Microscopy And Nano-Probe Study Of Cosm/Cr Films, Yi Liu, David J. Sellmyer, B. W. Robertson, Z.S. Shan, Sy_Hwang Liou
Sy-Hwang Liou Publications
The crystal structure of the crystallites in CoSm thin films deposited on Cr underlayer was studied by nanodiffraction and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). It was found that the crystallites have a closed-packed structure. Some nanodiffraction patterns taken from different crystallites using a two nanometer probe can be indexed by two layer stacking AB (HCP structure), three layer stacking ABC (FCC structure), and four layer stacking ABAC (double hexagonal structure), suggesting that a particular local stacking mode could exist. [112-0] HREM images confirmed that stacking sequence changes within one crystallite. In local regions, random stacking, and unit cells …

Magnetic Switching Volumes Of Cosm Thin Films For High Density Longitudinal Recording, E.W. Singleton, Z.S. Shan, Y.S. Jeong, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
For a high density recording media, the magnetic switching volume is of great importance when considering media noise and thermal stability. CoSm//Cr films have been prepad and the influence of the Cr underlayer thickness and of the magnetic layer preparation conditions on the magnetic switching volume have been investigated through magnetic viscosity and remnance curve measurements. The measured switching volumes ranged from 3.0 to 15.2x10-18 cm3, and implications regarding noise and thermal stability are discussed.

Magnetic Properties And Structure Of Fe/Pt Thin Films, C.P. Luo, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
The structural transfqmation from fcc to fct and relevant magnetic properties of initially multilayered Fe/Pt films were studied. When the as-deposited FePt films were annealed at the temperature of 300°C and up, the fct-phase was formed. Rather square hysteresis loops and large coercivities were measured from the annealed films. The films annealed at 300°C retain a layered structure.

Democratic Participation In A Community Of Learners: Loris Malaguzzi's Philosophy Of Education As Relationship , Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
We consider relationships to be the fundamental, organizing strategy of our educational system. -- Loris Malaguzzi, 1993, p. 10.
The metaphor of education as relationship provided Loris Malaguzzi with the fundamental premise for his philosophy and pedagogy. The child--seen as powerful, rich in resources, competent, and social--seeks from the beginning of life to find out about the self, others, and the world through interaction: knowledge is co-constructed. Education, hence, must focus not on the child considered in isolation from others, but instead on the child seen as interconnected with particular others in nested communities: home, classroom, school, neighborhood, city, region, …
