Specific Genomic Regions In Common Bean Condition Resistance To Multiple Pathogens, Phillip N. Miklas, Valerie Stone, Carlos A. Urrea, James S. Beaver

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

A genetic linkage map of 170 RAPD markers mapped across 79 recombinant inbred lines (Dorado and XAN-176) reveal genomic regions that condition multiple disease resistance to fungal (Ashy Stem Blight—Macrophomina phaseolina), viral (bean golden mosaic virus— BGMV), and bacterial (common bacterial blight—Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli) pathogens of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). A genomic site on linkage group US-1 had a major effect, explaining 18%, 34%, and 40% of the variation in phenotypic reaction to ashy stem blight, BGMV, and common bacterial blight disease, respectively. Adjacent to this region was a QTL conditioning 23% of …

The Aspergillus Nidulans Sepa Gene Encodes An Fh1/2 Protein Involved In Cytokinesis And The Maintenance Of Cellular Polarity, Steven D. Harris, Lisbeth Hamer, Kathryn E. Sharpless, John E. Hamer Jun 1997

The Aspergillus Nidulans Sepa Gene Encodes An Fh1/2 Protein Involved In Cytokinesis And The Maintenance Of Cellular Polarity, Steven D. Harris, Lisbeth Hamer, Kathryn E. Sharpless, John E. Hamer

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Cytokinesis (septation) in the fungus Aspergillus nidulans occurs through the formation of a transient actin ring at the incipient division site. Temperature-sensitive mutations in the sepA gene prevent septation and cause defects in the maintenance of cellular polarity, without affecting growth and nuclear division. The sepA gene encodes a member of the growing family of FH1/2 proteins, which appear to have roles in morphogenesis and cytokinesis in organisms such as yeast and Drosophila Results from temperature shift and immunofluorescence microscopy experiments strongly suggest that sepA function requires a preceding mitosis and that sepA acts prior to actin ring formation. Deletion …

Transcriptional Patterns Of The Pcd41 (U27) Locus Of Human Herpesvirus 6, Yi Zhou, Bala Chandran, Charles Wood May 1997

Transcriptional Patterns Of The Pcd41 (U27) Locus Of Human Herpesvirus 6, Yi Zhou, Bala Chandran, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a lymphotropic herpesvirus, and in vitro, it can productively infect many of the same cell types that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infects. Simultaneous infection of T cells by HIV and HHV-6 can lead to both activation of the HIV promoter and acceleration of the cytopathic effects. Several HHV-6 genes have been demonstrated to activate HIV promoter expression. Among them is a cDNA clone, pCD41 (U27), which codes for the HHV-6 DNA polymerase accessory protein. We have now further characterized the transcription pattern in the pCD41 locus and identified at least six RNA species, ranging in …

Pathogenicity Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In The Intestines Of Neonatal Calves, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Brad T. Bosworth, William C. Cray Jr., Harley W. Moon May 1997

Pathogenicity Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In The Intestines Of Neonatal Calves, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Brad T. Bosworth, William C. Cray Jr., Harley W. Moon

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Cattle are an important reservoir of Shiga toxin-producing enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 strains, foodborne pathogens that cause hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. EHEC O157:H7 strains are not pathogenic in calves >3 weeks old. Our objective was to determine if EHEC O157:H7 strains are pathogenic in neonatal calves. Calves(A/E) lesions in both the large and small intestines by 18 h postinoculation. The severity of diarrhea and inflammation, and also the frequency and extent of A/E lesions, increased by 3 days postinoculation. We conclude that EHEC O157:H7 strains are pathogenic in neonatal calves. The neonatal calf model is …

Fabrication Of Micron Scale Magnetic Nickel Features By Selective Area Organometallic Chemical Vapor Deposition, D. Welipitiya, C.N. Borca, Peter A. Dowben May 1997

Fabrication Of Micron Scale Magnetic Nickel Features By Selective Area Organometallic Chemical Vapor Deposition, D. Welipitiya, C.N. Borca, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We demonstrate that it is possible to deposit a wide range of magnetic features, using photo-assisted and electron radiation induced selective area organometallic chemical vapor deposition. Large arrays of identical micron to nano scale Ni features were deposited by these methods. Their magnetic properties were studied by alternating gradient force magnetometry as well as magnetic force microscopy. Our morphological and magnetic measurements show that the structures are spatially well defined, and the magnetic properties are related to the structural shapes of the features.

The Effects Of Individual, Contextual, And Moral Intensity Factors On Environmental Ethical Decision Making, Brenda L. Flannery May 1997

The Effects Of Individual, Contextual, And Moral Intensity Factors On Environmental Ethical Decision Making, Brenda L. Flannery

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Most extant studies of organizational ethical decision making have been remiss in doing one or more of the following: (a) building theoretical foundations; (b) encompassing the individual. contextual, and issue-specific determinants impacting ethical judgments; (c) offering testable hypotheses; and/or (d) establishing methodological rigor. This study confronted those challenges aiming to understand the decision intentions of top managers in the metal finishing industry concerning the treatment of hazardous wastewater.

This study employed an extended version of Ajzen's (1988) theory of planned behavior. The theory accommodatingly modeled the individual (i.e., attitudes, self-efficacy. personal moral obligation), contextual (subjective norms, organizational climate, and financial …

Average Steady Nonuniform Flow In Stratified Formations, Peter Indelman, Vitaly A. Zlotnik May 1997

Average Steady Nonuniform Flow In Stratified Formations, Peter Indelman, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A mathematical model of average nonuniform flow in heterogeneous stratified media is developed. The averaged Darcy's law is obtained by deriving the analytical expression of the effective conductivity tensor for media with small heterogeneities. The fundamental solution of the average flow equation (mean Green function) corresponding to the flow toward a single point source of deterministic discharge is derived. The mean head distribution is calculated for a fully penetrating well, for a finite length well in an infinite domain, and for a dipole well. The concept of equivalent conductivity is defined for use in identifying the formation conductivity properties. The …

Magnetic Hardening In Fept Nanostructured Films, J. Ping Liu, Yi Liu, C.P. Luo, Z.S. Shan Apr 1997

Magnetic Hardening In Fept Nanostructured Films, J. Ping Liu, Yi Liu, C.P. Luo, Z.S. Shan

David Sellmyer Publications

FePt films have been prepared by sputtering Fe/Pt multilayers onto glass or silicon substrates. The thickness of the Fe and Pt layers was adjusted with the Fe:Pt atomic ratio from about 1:1 to 2:1. Magnetic hardening is observed after heat treatment at elevated temperatures, which led to coercivity values exceeding 20 kOe in samples with an Fe:Pt ratio around 1.2:1. The hardening originates from the formation of the tetragonal FePt phase with high magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a favorable microstructure. Two-phase composite films containing hard and soft phases were obtained when the Fe:Pt ratio increased. Under optimized processing conditions, composite films …

Correlation Of Switching Volume With Magnetic Properties, Microstructure, And Media Noise In Cocr(Pt)Ta Thin Films, C. Gao, Z.S. Shan, R. Malmhall, Yi Liu, H.J. Richter, A. Barney, G.C. Rauch, David J. Sellmyer Apr 1997

Correlation Of Switching Volume With Magnetic Properties, Microstructure, And Media Noise In Cocr(Pt)Ta Thin Films, C. Gao, Z.S. Shan, R. Malmhall, Yi Liu, H.J. Richter, A. Barney, G.C. Rauch, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

The technique of "field sweep-rate dependence of coercivity" together with the delta-M curves, transmission electron microscopy, and media noise measurement have been employed to reveal the correlation among the magnetic switching volume, physical grain size, intergrain interaction, and noise properties. The switching volume for both CoCrTa and CoCrPtTa films was found to be ~ 15 nm in diameter, and weakly dependent on grain size and coercivity for the systems studied. In films with physical grain size larger than the switching volume, strong intergrain interaction and high media noise is observed. In films with the physical grain size close to the …

Nanostructure And Magnetic Anisotropy Of Co/Au Multilayers, Yi Liu, Z.S. Shan, David J. Sellmyer Apr 1997

Nanostructure And Magnetic Anisotropy Of Co/Au Multilayers, Yi Liu, Z.S. Shan, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Multilayer Co/Au films were deposited on 40 nm Au underlayer by magnetron sputtering. The Co thickness is kept constant at 0.5 nm while the Au thickness is varied from 0.5 to 8 nm. Magnetic measurements show that the perpendicular anisotropy of the films changes from 3 × 106 to 1.5 × 106 erg/cm3 as the Au thickness changes from 6 to 1 nm. Two films of (Co 0.5 nm/Au 6 nm) × 9/Au 40 nm (denoted Au6) and (Co 0.5 nm/Au 1 nm) × 50/Au 40 nm (denoted Au1) were examined by transmission electron microscopy. For the …

Enhanced Temperature Effect On Magnetoresistance In Fe/Mo Multilayers, M.L. Yan, Y.W. Lai, L. Yin, Sy_Hwang Liou Apr 1997

Enhanced Temperature Effect On Magnetoresistance In Fe/Mo Multilayers, M.L. Yan, Y.W. Lai, L. Yin, Sy_Hwang Liou

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

We have observed an enhancement of the temperature effect on magnetoresistance (MR) in Fe/Mo multilayers with the increase of the Mo layer thickness. MR at the first antiferromagnetic maximum is large and insensitive to the temperature whereas at the third antiferromagnetic maximum it is small and relatively sensitive to the temperature. We found that the mean free path of the conduction electrons increased with the increase of the Mo layer thickness at a fixed temperature and it decreased very slightly with the increase of the temperature at a fixed Mo layer thickness. The interlayer coupling, similar to MR, also has …

Magnetic Properties And Switching Volumes Of Nanocrystalline Smfesic Films, S.Y. Zhang, Z.S. Shan, Yi Liu, T.Y. Zhao, J.G. Zhao, B.G. Shen, W.S. Zhan, David J. Sellmyer Apr 1997

Magnetic Properties And Switching Volumes Of Nanocrystalline Smfesic Films, S.Y. Zhang, Z.S. Shan, Yi Liu, T.Y. Zhao, J.G. Zhao, B.G. Shen, W.S. Zhan, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Systematic studies of the effects of Si addition on the magnetic and magnetization reversal properties of SmFeSiC films are presented. The magnetic switching volume and other magnetic parameters (e.g., coercivity) are strongly dependent upon the Si content. Correlations between switching volume, coercivity, and the intergrain interactions are discussed.

Comparison Of Avrd Alleles From Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Glycinea, Lisa Wolfson Keith, Carol Boyd, Noel T. Keen, J. E. Patridge Apr 1997

Comparison Of Avrd Alleles From Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Glycinea, Lisa Wolfson Keith, Carol Boyd, Noel T. Keen, J. E. Patridge

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Avirulence gene D alleles resided on indigenous plasmids in races 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea (Psg), but the allele in race 1 appeared to be chromosomal. These were all nonfunctional avirulence genes because they neither induced the avirulence phenotype on Rpg4 soybean cultivars nor directed the production of syringolide elicitors when expressed in Escherichia coli cells. The predicted proteins encoded by the seven Psg avrD genes were very similar to that of a functional class II allele from P. syringae pv. phaseolicola G50 race 2, but contained mutations collectively …

Review Of Killing Custer: The Battle Of The Little Big Horn And The Fate Of The Plains Indians By James Welch With Paul Stekler., Kathryn E. Shanley Apr 1997

Review Of Killing Custer: The Battle Of The Little Big Horn And The Fate Of The Plains Indians By James Welch With Paul Stekler., Kathryn E. Shanley

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Killing Custer began in 1990 as a film project, a collaboration between Paul Stekler (producer and director) and James Welch (noted Blackfeet/Gros Ventre author). Once the film was completed (it aired November of 1992), Welch embarked on his own historical and "impressionistic" reading of those events in Plains Indian history, armed with Paul Stekler's "research, maps, photographs, reading skill, and moral support." Being a collaborative text straddling history, fiction, political essay, and memoir, the book eludes easy categorization; nevertheless, it is engaging in multidimensional ways and from a myriad of perspectives.

Why Killing Custer? "Custer's Last Stand," as the …

Nine Complementary Principles To Retain Adults In An Esol/Literacy Program, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The following list of principles is my attempt to share general recommendations to teachers of ESOL and/or limited literacy adults based on my specific practice running a bilingual family literacy program and confirmed by my more recent experience as a volunteer bilingual literacy teacher at the Asociación Latinoamericana (in Atlanta). Though I believe in bilingual classroom environments, I think the principles identified here are also pertinent to monolingual ESL environments.
