Management Of Pest Birds In Urban Environments, Ron J. Johnson
Management Of Pest Birds In Urban Environments, Ron J. Johnson
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
A number of bird species may cause nuisance or damage problems in urban areas. These include European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), house sparrows (Passer domesticus), feral pigeons or rock doves (Columba livia), and others. Recently, increasing numbers of resident Canada geese (Branta canadensis) have resulted in conflicts in urban areas, particularly around golf courses, parks, and developments that have lakes or ponds surrounded by grass. Bird damage management programs are increasingly expected to provide effective solutions in a humane and socially acceptable way. Management approaches and products are affected by clientele preferences and public opinion nationwide, which, along with small markets, …
Drought Preparedness And Response In The Context Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Donald A. Wilhite
Drought Preparedness And Response In The Context Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Although drought is a normal, recurring feature of climate, little progress has been made in drought management in most parts of the world. A United Nations study of selected Sub-Saharan African countries revealed that most states have little experience in proactive planning for drought. Only Botswana and South Africa have made serious efforts to develop drought preparedness and response. The lack of contingency planning for drought events in the region results from limited financial resources, inadequate understanding of drought impacts, and poor coordination among government agencies. A ten-step planning process, originally developed in 1991 for U.S. states, is suggested as …

Planning For Drought: Moving From Crisis To Risk Management, Donald A. Wilhite, Michael J. Hayes, Cody Knutson, Kelly Helm Smith
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Severe drought is a recurring problem for the United States, as illustrated by widespread economic, social, and environmental impacts. Recent drought episodes and the widespread drought conditions in 1996, 1998, and 1999 emphasized this vulnerability and the need for a more proactive, risk man-agement approach to drought management that would place greater emphasis on preparedness planning and mitigation actions. Drought planning has become a principal tool of states and other levels of government to improve their response to droughts. For example, since 1982, the number of states with drought plans has increased from 3 to 29. Many local governments have …
Drought Preparedness In The United States: Recent Progress, Donald A. Wilhite
Drought Preparedness In The United States: Recent Progress, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Since 1986, the United States has experienced numerous droughts causing billions of dollars in losses in many economic, social, and environmental sectors. To lessen the risks associated with drought, governments at all levels have taken greater interest in drought planning, with the greatest progress coming at the state level. However, state plans, and recent actions taken by states in response to drought, have been largely reactive, emphasizing short-term actions over long-term planning. The National Drought Mitigation Center’s program is directed toward helping governments and others lessen societal vulnerability to drought. The NDMC provides a national drought information clearinghouse; assists state, …
Chapter 40 Responding To Drought: Common Threads From The Past, Visions For The Future, Donald A. Wilhite
Chapter 40 Responding To Drought: Common Threads From The Past, Visions For The Future, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Severe drought affected large portions of the United States during the winter, spring, and summer months of 1995–96. This event triggered a significant response effort by both state and federal government in the drought-stricken states of the Southwest and southern Great Plains. A federal interagency multistate drought task force was formed in late May. This task force, coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), organized a workshop (FEMA 1996a) in late June to evaluate and assess drought-relief pro-grams available from federal, state, and local agencies for the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Other …
Chapter 35 Preparing For Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite
Chapter 35 Preparing For Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Preparedness was defined in chapter 1 as predisaster activities designed to increase the level of readiness or improve operational and institutional capabilities for responding to an emergency. Drought preparedness has encountered increasing support from governments in recent years at various levels because of escalating impacts and the ineffectiveness and costs of emergency assistance programs that have little noticeable return. For example, between 1970 and 1984, state and federal government in Australia expended more than A$925 million on drought relief under the Natural Disaster Relief Arrangements (Wilhite 1986). The Republic of South Africa spent R2.5 billion for drought relief from the …
Chapter 39 State Actions To Mitigate Drought: Lessons Learned, Donald A. Wilhite
Chapter 39 State Actions To Mitigate Drought: Lessons Learned, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Drought is a normal, recurrent feature of the climate of virtually all portions of the United States. Because of the country’s size and the wide range of climatic regimes, it is rare for drought not to exist somewhere in the country each year. The most recent series of drought years that has plagued the country since 1986 has extended almost uninterrupted to the present. During this time, drought has affected all or a portion of nearly all states; in some instances, states were affected for six or seven consecutive years. The percent area of the contiguous United States, according to …

G1402 Preharvest Soybean Marketing Strategies, James G. Kendrick, George H. Pfeiffer, Roger Wilson, David J. Drozd
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide provides strategies for using the futures market to obtain higher prices for soybeans. Soybean producers who decide to use the futures market to price their crop are immediately faced with a number of decisions. Should a futures contract be used as a hedge to "lock in" a price, or should an options contract be used to establish a floor price? When should the position be established? Which futures contract month is most appropriate? The many decisions facing those using the futures market may be a reason some have decided not to use it at all. The University of …

Development Of Vaccines For Prevention Of Botulism, Michael P. Byrne, Leonard A. Smith
Development Of Vaccines For Prevention Of Botulism, Michael P. Byrne, Leonard A. Smith
United States Army: Publications
Botulism is a potentially lethal disease caused by one of seven homologous neurotoxic proteins usually produced by the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. This neuromuscular disorder occurs through an exquisite series of molecular events, ultimately ending with the arrest of acetylcholine release and hence, flaccid paralysis. The development of vaccines that protect against botulism dates back to the 1940s. Currently, a pentavalent vaccine that protects against BoNT serotypes A-E and a separate monovalent vaccine that protects against BoNT serotype F are available as Investigational New Drugs. However, due to the numerous shortcomings associated with the toxoid vaccines, several groups have efforts …

Primary Isolation Of Ehrlichia Chaffeensis From Patients With Febrile Illnesses: Clinical And Molecular Characteristics, Steven M. Standaert, Tina Yu, Margie A. Scott, James E. Childs, Christopher D. Paddock, William L. Nicholson, Joseph Singleton Jr., Martin J. Blaser
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Ehrlichia chaffeensis was sought among patients with a history of tick exposure and fever, and the accuracy of other diagnostic tests was compared with that of primary isolation. Among the 38 patients enrolled, E. chaffeensis was isolated from the blood of 7 (18%) and from cerebrospinal fluid specimens of 2 of these 7. All 7 patients also were positive by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of blood, and 6 patients developed diagnostic titers of antibody to E. chaffeensis. The isolates were characterized by molecular analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, the 120-kDa protein gene, and the variable-length PCR target (VLPT) …

Mineral Transformation Associated With The Microbial Reduction Of Magnetite, Hailiang Dong, James K. Fredrickson, David W. Kennedy, John M. Zachara, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, Tullis C. Onstott
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Although dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria (DIRB) are capable of reducing a number of metals in oxides and soluble forms, the factors controlling the raterextent of magnetite reduction and the nature of the mineral products resulting from magnetite reduction are not well understood. This study was carried out to investigate mechanisms and biogeochemical processes occurring during magnetite reduction by the DIRB, Shewanella putrefaciens strains CN32 and MR-1. Reduction experiments were performed with biogenic and synthetic magnetite in well-defined solutions. Biogenic magnetite was generated via microbial reduction of hydrous ferric oxide (HFO). Biogenic magnetite in solutions buffered with either bicarbonate (HCO3 …

Reduction Of U(Vi) In Goethite (Α-Feooh) Suspensions By A Dissimilatory Metal-Reducing Bacterium, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara, David Kennedy, Martine Duff, Yuri Gorby, Shu-Mei Li, Kenneth Krupka
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) can utilize Fe(III) associated with aqueous complexes or solid phases, such as oxide and oxyhydroxide minerals, as a terminal electron acceptor coupled to the oxidation of H2 or organic substrates. These bacteria are also capable of reducing other metal ions including Mn(IV), Cr(VI), and U(VI), a process that has a pronounced effect on their solubility and overall geochemical behavior. In spite of considerable study on an individual basis, the biogeochemical behavior of multiple metals subject to microbial reduction is poorly understood. To probe these complex processes, the reduction of U(VI) by the subsurface bacterium, Shewanella …
The Effect Of Ozone On Below-Ground Carbon Allocation In Wheat, J. K. Mccrady, C.P. Andersen
The Effect Of Ozone On Below-Ground Carbon Allocation In Wheat, J. K. Mccrady, C.P. Andersen
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Short-term 14CO2 pulse and chase experiments were conducted in order to investigate the effect of ozone on below-ground carbon allocation in spring wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L. `ANZA'). Wheat seedlings were grown in a sand-hydroponic system and exposed to either high ozone (38-40 ppm-h) or low ozone (23-31 ppm-h) for 21 days in a series of replicated experiments. Following the ozone exposures, the plants were pulsed with 14CO2 and allocation of 14C-labeled photosynthate was measured in the plant and growth media. Soluble root exudates were measured, without disturbing the plant roots, 24 h after …

Metals Transport In The Sacramento River, California, 1996–1997 Volume 1: Methods And Data, Charles N. Alpers, Howard E. Taylor, Joseph L. Domagalski
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Metals transport in the Sacramento River, northern California, was evaluated on the basis of samples of water, suspended colloids, streambed sediment, and caddisfly larvae that were collected on one to six occasions at 19 sites in the Sacramento River Basin from July 1996 to June 1997. Four of the sampling periods (July, September, and November 1996; and May–June 1997) took place during relatively low-flow conditions and two sampling periods (December 1996 and January 1997) took place during high-flow and flooding conditions; respectively. Tangential-flow ultrafiltration with 10,000 nominal molecular weight limit, or daltons (0.005 micrometer equivalent), pore-size membranes was used to …

Pore Fluid Pressure, Apparent Friction, And Coulomb Failure, N. M. Beeler, R. W. Simpson, S. H. Hickman, D. A. Lockner
Pore Fluid Pressure, Apparent Friction, And Coulomb Failure, N. M. Beeler, R. W. Simpson, S. H. Hickman, D. A. Lockner
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Many recent studies of stress-triggered seismicity rely on a fault failure
model with a single free parameter, the apparent coefficient of friction, presumed to be a material constant with possible values 0 ≤ μ ' ≤ 1. These studies may present a misleading view of fault strength and the role of pore fluid pressure in earthquake failure. The parameter μ ' is intended to incorporate the effects of both friction and pore pressure, but is a material constant only if changes in pore fluid pressure induced by changes in stress are proportional to the normal stress change across the potential …

Metal Exposure In A Benthic Macroinvertebrate, Hydropsyche Californica, Related To Mine Drainage In The Sacramento River, Daniel J. Cain, James L. Carter, Steven V. Fend, Samuel N. Luoma, Charles N. Alpers, Howard E. Taylor
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A biomonitoring technique was employed to complement studies of metal transport in the upper Sacramento River affected by acid mine drainage. Metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, and Zn) were determined in a resident invertebrate, Hydropsyche californica (Insecta: Trichoptera), and streambed sediments (<62 >μm) to assess metal contamination within a 111-km section of the river downstream of the mining area. Metals in H. californica also were interpreted to be broadly indicative of metal exposure in fish. Total Hg was determined in the whole body of the insect, whereas Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn were additionally separated into …62>
Fractured-Aquifer Hydrogeology From Geophysical Logs: Brunswick Group And Lockatong Formation, Pennsylvania, Roger H. Morin, Lisa A. Senior, Edward R. Decker
Fractured-Aquifer Hydrogeology From Geophysical Logs: Brunswick Group And Lockatong Formation, Pennsylvania, Roger H. Morin, Lisa A. Senior, Edward R. Decker
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The Brunswick Group and the underlying Lockatong Formation are composed of lithified Mesozoic sediments that constitute part of the Newark Basin in southeastern Pennsylvania. These fractured rocks form an important regional aquifer that consists of gradational sequences of shale, siltstone, and sandstone, with fluid transport occurring primarily in fractures. An extensive suite of geophysical logs was obtained in seven wells located at the borough of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, in order to better characterize the areal hydrogeologic system and provide guidelines for the refinement of numerical ground water models. Six of the seven wells are approximately 120 m deep and the seventh …
Expression Of Biologically Active Human Butyrylcholinesterase In The Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia Ni), Peter L. Platteborze, Clarence A. Broomfield
Expression Of Biologically Active Human Butyrylcholinesterase In The Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia Ni), Peter L. Platteborze, Clarence A. Broomfield
United States Army: Publications
This investigation examined the utility of three recombinant protein-expression systems (COS cells, insect cells and insect larvae) to cost-effectively produce biologically active human butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). It was determined that baculovirus-infected insect cells (Sf9 and High 5) expressed 3.5- and 8.2-fold, respectively, more active enzyme than COS-7 cells. Baculovirus-infected cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni) insect larvae produced over 26 times more than High 5 cells ; in fact, one baculovirus-infected insect larva provided more active protein than 100 ml of insect cell culture. Analysis of the larvally expressed proteins revealed that the vast majority of BuChE expressed was inactive due to …

Faculty Response To The Report Of A Comprehensive Issues Review
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
The Review Team supports the planning process that was utilized by the Faculty/Staff to identify and define issues for this review. We support the continuance of issue teams in Southeast Nebraska. We will not name the teams but leave that to the faculty and Dr. Cantrell to determine. We endorse the identification of program coordinators to head the teams. It is our suggestion that Dr. Cantrell and the identified program coordinators clearly define these roles in job descriptions, and plan for an ongoing communication between the district administration and the teams. It probably goes without saying, but we would like …

«Cervantes Y Esquivias»: Exploración De Una Fase En La Formación De Su Estilo Barroco, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen
