Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A. H. Miller Apr 2026

Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A. H. Miller

Duke Law Journal

From cases spanning gun rights, reproductive freedom, religious liberty, and personal jurisdiction; to separation of powers and other structural features of the Constitution, courts increasingly rely on tradition to guide their decisions. Often, judges appeal to tradition in a vaguely empirical way, as “facts to study, not convictions to demonstrate about,” in the words of Justice Antonin Scalia. Yet, for a claim that purports to be factual, there’s very little agreement, or even analysis, about what renders this factual assertion—tradition—true or false. This Article tackles that basic issue.

Part I surveys the ways in which courts use tradition in different …

A qualitative single-case approach was utilized, analyzing archival records, interviews, a documentary about Green’s activism, newspaper articles, and Green’s own documentation of his work in the movement—all examined through thematic analysis. This process revealed key themes related to Green’s activism. The findings showed that Green employed non-violent, creative, and provocative protest tactics, including civil disobedience and direct action. These strategies revealed hidden racial inequalities, …

Utah Women And Skilled Trades, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen Apr 2026

Utah Women And Skilled Trades, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Currently more than 8 million people in the US work in the construction and skilled trades industries, which have historically been referred to as “blue-collar” jobs.1 The numbers will likely increase as there is a growing demand for skilled labor across the US because of the retirements of experienced tradespeople and the fact that fewer young people are pursuing these fields. Estimates show that by 2030, more than 40.0% of the current skilled trades and construction workforce will retire, leaving these industries with a critical worker shortage.2 Projections suggest that in the US by 2030, the skilled trades …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

NANOG overexpression has been reported to reverse aging-associated decline in mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC) function, but the molecular machinery engaged by NANOG in MSCs remains incompletely defined. Here, we applied APEX proximity labeling coupled with quantitative mass spectrometry to define the NANOG proximity interactome (proxeome) in human MSCs. Of 1040 quantified proteins, 828 were significantly enriched in the APEX-NANOG (H2O2 labeling) samples, consistent with a broad NANOG-centered neighborhood rather than a single stoichiometric complex. Enriched proteins encompass RNA-processing pathways (including splicing/RNP factors and selected m6A-related proteins), transcriptional coactivation and elongation control (Mediator and 7SK/P-TEFb regulators), chromatin repression/poising modules (Polycomb and …

Symmetry-Aware Optimization Framework For Network Topology And Collective Algorithm Co-Design, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

The technology relates to a software framework providing for the simultaneous co-design of network topologies and collective communication algorithms in distributed computing environments. The software framework utilizes a graph-theory-based model to represent computing nodes and physical communication links, encoding hardware and software parameters into a solver-readable mathematical formulation. By applying combinatorial optimization solvers, the software framework identifies highly efficient physical cabling schemas and corresponding algorithmic routing schedules. To handle highly complex search spaces, the approach leverages graph automorphisms and symmetries in collective operations to significantly reduce the combinatorial search space. This enables the generation of tailored interconnect architectures and message-passing …

Vertical Equity Skagit Style, Danny Hagen Apr 2026

Vertical Equity Skagit Style, Danny Hagen

GIS/ValuationTechnologies Conference 2026

Vertical equity is one of the most important — and least understood — measures of fairness in property tax systems. While horizontal equity ensures that similar properties are assessed similarly, vertical equity asks whether assessments remain fair across value tiers. This session explores how assessors can measure, monitor, and improve vertical equity using ratio studies, statistical tools, and intentional practices. Drawing on Skagit County’s recent successes, including state-validated results and the use of the Lincoln Institute’s Vertical Equity App, attendees will see how modeling, training, and data accuracy can produce measurable improvements in fairness. We’ll also examine national research, local …

Training is a critical aspect to the success of a modeling team given the specific skill sets required. In the past two years, we have developed a training library and will discuss our ongoing efforts to meticulously …

Autocratic Legacies: Analyzing The Political Divergence Of Turkmenistan And Uzbekistan, Kolea Suehiro Apr 2026

Autocratic Legacies: Analyzing The Political Divergence Of Turkmenistan And Uzbekistan, Kolea Suehiro

Global Tides

Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, two countries nearly identical in their foundational features, are moving along starkly different governmental trajectories. The dominant explanation for this divergence accounts for both structural and personalistic influences. In Turkmenistan, literature examines how an established patronal authoritarianism, necessitated by a concentrated elite and economic network, led the country along a strong authoritarian trajectory with a high degree of cult of personality. In contrast, a networked patronal authoritarianism in Uzbekistan, comprised of political and economic power-sharing, led the country along a weaker authoritarian trajectory with a lower degree of personalism. Thus, previous research has addressed how institutional structures …
