Powerful Feelings Recollected In Tranquility Literary Criticism And Lakota Social Song Poetry, R. D. Theisz Jul 2000

Powerful Feelings Recollected In Tranquility Literary Criticism And Lakota Social Song Poetry, R. D. Theisz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The anthropologist and ethnomusicologist William K. Powers, in his Beyond the Vision: Essays on American Indian Culture, laments that the discipline of ethnomusicology-and music pedagogy-with its emphasis on the vocal and instrumental "art music" traditions of musically literate peoples has been lax in accepting anthropological theory. Thus, Powers points out that ethnomusicology, where it is concerned with the music of oral, indigenous cultures, adheres to outdated theories on "primitive" music and displays a telling absence of ethnographic abilities.1 Reflecting Powers' judgment, it seems to me that the conceptual seams between anthropology, ethnomusicology, and musicology are rather formidable.

Escapades On Third Street: Chapters 2-4, Gregory E. Rutledge

Department of English: Faculty Publications

It’s early summer, 1971, and school has just recessed. Benjamin Thomas, a typical eleven-year-old boy, has his hopes set on three months of escapades unchecked by the tedium of teachers and books and classrooms. The first few weeks of unadulterated storytelling, exuberant play at The Park, treasure hunting in Piney Forest, rescuing ripe fruit from neighbors’ trees, and a host of deeds and misdeeds, send Ben, his sisters, and his best friends well on their way to an unforgettable summer of fun. . . But then Vincent Solomon comes to town, bringing with him the ideals and enthusiasm of the …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1999-2000, Bruce Johnson, Brandon G.Y. Raddatz

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Nebraska's agricultural real estate market conditions have been monitored and analyzed annually since 1978 by the Department of Agricultural Economics-UNL. In the most recent survey for 2000, the markets for agricultural land were found to have remained relatively unchanged over the past year, despite generally poor farm commodity prices. As of February 1st, 2000, the UNL survey showed the state all-land average value to be $698 per acre, a 1.1 percent increase from 12 months earlier. While the values for particular classes of land across the sub-state areas moved in both directions, the percentage changes from year-earlier levels were generally …

Social Change And Adolescent Development: Issues And Challenges, Lisa J. Crockett, Rainer K. Silbereisen Jun 2000

Social Change And Adolescent Development: Issues And Challenges, Lisa J. Crockett, Rainer K. Silbereisen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Determining the consequences of such societal-level changes for adolescent development presents formidable challenges. Social change on one or more dimensions must be documented, the complex processes through which social change may affect adolescents must be identified, and the hypothesized causal processes must be linked empirically to adolescent outcomes. In this chapter, we discuss these challenges and the conceptual issues they raise. We begin with one example of social change and use it as a springboard for discussing four questions:
1. What kinds of contextual changes are produced by social change?
2. How (through what mediating processes) do these changes affect …

Rural Youth: Ecological And Life Course Perspectives, Lisa J. Crockett, Michael J. Shanahan, Julia Jackson-Newsom

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Drawing on the themes of social change, ecological risk, and their implications for the life course, this chapter is intended as a point of departure for future research on rural adolescents. We begin by considering the basic but difficult issue of defining the ecology of rural youth, noting possible sources of risk and resilience. We then examine research on psychosocial adjustment among rural youth, identifying how they are advantaged and disadvantaged relative to other youth. Third, we turn to a central challenge facing contemporary rural youth: the need to reconcile attachments to family and place with a desire for educational …

Scalable Web Server Clustering Technologies, Trevor Schroeder, Steve Goddard, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The exponential growth of the Internet, coupled with the increasing popularity of dynamically generated content on the World Wide Web, has created the need for more and faster Web servers capable of serving the over 100 million Internet users. Server clustering has emerged as a promising technique to build scalable Web servers. In this article we examine the seminal work, early products, and a sample of contemporary commercial offerings in the field of transparent Web server clustering. We broadly classify transparent server clustering into three categories.

Efflux Of Osmolyte Amino Acids During Isovolumic Regulation In Hippocampal Slices, Rodrigo Franco, Octavio Quesada, Herminia Pasantes-Morales May 2000

Efflux Of Osmolyte Amino Acids During Isovolumic Regulation In Hippocampal Slices, Rodrigo Franco, Octavio Quesada, Herminia Pasantes-Morales

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The efflux of potassium (K+) and amino acids from hippocampal slices was measured after sudden exposure to 10% (270 mOsm), 25% (225 mOsm) or 50% (150 mOsm) hyposmotic solutions or after gradual decrease (22.5 mOsm/min) in external osmolarity. In slices suddenly exposed to 50% hyposmotic solutions, swelling was followed by partial (74%) cell volume recovery, suggesting regulatory volume decrease (RVD). With gradual hyposmotic changes, no increase in cell water content was observed even when the solution at the end of the experiment was 50% hyposmotic, showing the occurrence of isovolumic regulation (IVR). The gradual decrease in osmolarity elicited …

Shifts In Mid- To Late-Holocene Anion Composition In Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota): Comparison Of Diatom And Ostracode Inferences, Jasmine E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Alison J. Smith May 2000

Shifts In Mid- To Late-Holocene Anion Composition In Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota): Comparison Of Diatom And Ostracode Inferences, Jasmine E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Alison J. Smith

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The fossil diatom record from Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota) was used to reconstruct salinity and brine type between 2640 and 4645 14C yr BP. This lake was selected for a brine-type reconstruction because a previous study using fossil-ostracode assemblages indicated a shift in anion composition during the mid-Holocene (Smith et al., 1997). Salinity was reconstructed using a transfer function developed for the Northern Great Plains (NGP) of North America; the reconstruction revealed that salinity was higher (1.5–6.2 g l−1) between ~4000 and 4645 14C yr BP and dropped to 0.35–1.2 g l−1 after 4000 14C yr …

The Distance Education Learning Model (Del), Gary "Lee" Frantz, James W. King May 2000

The Distance Education Learning Model (Del), Gary "Lee" Frantz, James W. King

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

The interface of education, technology, distance education, and change is very complex. As we examined the arena of distance education, we realized the usefulness of a systems approach as a powerful tool to connect and interrelate people, goals, organizations, and technologies in the educational playing field.

Banathy's core work (1968, 1992, 1995, 1996a, 199613) suggests an important model of the educational system as part of society--its larger suprasystem (see Figure 1). Through this model, he showed that education, as a lifelong process, is tied closely to the outputs, objectives, and purposes of other parts of society. This model simply shows …

Fept:Sio2 Granular Thin Film For High Density Magnetic Recording, C.P. Luo, Sy_Hwang Liou, David J. Sellmyer

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

Nanocomposite FePt:SiO2 thin films consisting of high anisotropy FePt particles embedded in a SiO2 matrix have been successfully fabricated by annealing the as-deposited FePt/SiO2 multilayers. By adjusting the annealing temperatures and compositions, films were obtained with coercivity of 3.8 kOe and grain size of 10 nm, which are suitable for high-density magnetic recording. Magnetic activation volumes were measured and thermal stability is discussed.

Magnetic Properties Of Self-Assembled Co Nanowires Of Varying Length And Diameter, H. Zeng, M. Zheng, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer, Yi Liu, L. Menon, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay May 2000

Magnetic Properties Of Self-Assembled Co Nanowires Of Varying Length And Diameter, H. Zeng, M. Zheng, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer, Yi Liu, L. Menon, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay

David Sellmyer Publications

Ferromagnetic Co nanowires have been electrodeposited into self-assembled porous anodic alumina arrays. Due to their cylindrical shape, the nanowires exhibit perpendicular anisotropy. The coercivity, remanence ratio, and activation volumes of Co nanowires depend strongly on the length, diameter, and spacing of the nanowires. Both coercivity and thermal activation volume increase with increasing wire length, while for constant center-to-center spacing, coercivity decreases and thermal activation volume increases with increasing wire diameter. The behavior of the nanowires is explained qualitatively in terms of localized magnetization reversal.

Activation Volumes In Thin Film And Particulate Systems, Roger D. Kirby, Mingjun Yu, David J. Sellmyer May 2000

Activation Volumes In Thin Film And Particulate Systems, Roger D. Kirby, Mingjun Yu, David J. Sellmyer

Roger Kirby Publications

We consider magnetization reversal and decay in thin film and particulate magnetic systems where thermally activated processes are important. We present measurements on the activation volumes associated with magnetization reversal in CoCrPt thin films. We find that the measured activation volume V* goes through a minimum as the film thickness is decreased from 17.5 to 5.5 nm. We have modeled this behavior qualitatively by assuming that the energy barrier to thermally activated reversal varies as 1/H, as has been predicted for incoherent nucleation processes and thermally activated domain–wall motion. This model also predicts that V* varies …

Nanostructure And Magnetic Properties Of Composite Copt:C Films, M. Yu, Yi Liu, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

The nanostructure and magnetic properties of composite CoPt:C films at room temperature were investigated as a function of annealing temperature, carbon concentration, and film thickness. CoPt:C films with a variety of carbon concentrations were fabricated by cosputtering Co, Pt, and C onto water-cooled Si(100) substrates followed by annealing. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses indicate that nanocrystallites of face-centered-tetragonal (fct) CoPt phase, which has a uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant of about 5×107 erg/cm3, can be formed in carbon matrix when the annealing temperature is higher than 600 °C. The grain sizes of the fct CoPt crystallites …

Magnetic Properties Of Cluster-Beam-Synthesized Cobalt: Noble-Metal Films, J.M. Meldrim, Y. Qiang, Yi Liu, H. Haberland, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

A cluster-beam deposition technique has been used to produce magnetic clusters embedded in a nonmagnetic matrix. We report here on films with cobalt clusters of average diameter of 5.5 nm embedded both in Cu and Ag. Volumetric concentrations of Co ranged from 10% to 50%. Magnetization and low temperature hysteresis loops, both field cooled (FC) and zero-field cooled (ZFC), have been measured between 4.2 and 300 K. The FC and ZFC magnetization bifurcate at or above room temperature with the clusters having a nonzero remanence at room temperature. Low temperature hysteresis loops exhibit a two-phase nature with one phase displaying …

Electronic Text Centers: Creating Research Collections On A Limited Budget, The Nebraska Experience, Joan Giesecke, Beth Mcneil, Gina L. B. Minks

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

In this article, we will describe a slightly different approach to building digital collections. The approach is that of building collections as a by-product of a service center rather than collection building being the primary purpose of the program activity. Specifically, we will discuss how an Electronic Text Center can enhance digital collection development in the humanities.

Wastewater Management Using Hybrid Poplar, Gary A. Kuhn Apr 2000

Wastewater Management Using Hybrid Poplar, Gary A. Kuhn

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Hybrid poplars are rapidly growing trees that are well suited to use agricultural, industrial, and community wastewater. They are being used as an alternative to expensive wastewater treatment systems, and methods which apply wastewater to annual crops or pasture. The trees serve a dual purpose as a nutrient sink for wastewater use and as a means to produce a short-rotation harvested wood product which helps offset the cost of installation and maintenance.

Planning tree wastewater use systems requires both agroforestry and engineering expertise. Omission of either in the planning process can lead to disappointing results and reduced benefits. This Agroforestry …

Geothermal Heat Pumps In K–12 Schools: A Case Study Of The Lincoln, Nebraska Schools, John A. Shonder, Michaela A. Martin, Patrick J. Hughes, Jeff Thornton

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) have been shown to have a number of benefits over other technologies used to heat and cool buildings and provide hot water, combining high levels of occupant comfort with low operating and maintenance costs. Public facilities represent an increasingly important market for GHPs, and schools are a particularly good application, given the large land area that normally surrounds them. Nevertheless, some barriers remain to the increased use of GHPs in institutional and commercial applications. First, because GHPs are perceived as having higher installation costs than other space conditioning technologies, they are sometimes not considered as an …

An Introduction To The Drought Monitor, Mark Svoboda Apr 2000

An Introduction To The Drought Monitor, Mark Svoboda

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

The idea of better monitoring and assessing drought has been a quest of NDMC director Don Wilhite for more than two decades. He has been an advocate of better climate monitoring, particularly drought monitoring, because drought is a normal, recurring hazard in virtually all of the United States. The challenge is to recognize drought, a slow-onset or “creeping” natural disaster, before a region is in the middle of one.

The most recent surge in interest in drought arose during the 1995–96 drought in the Southwest and southern Great Plains states. At the NDMC we discussed how we could do a …
