Surfactants As Blackbird Stressing Agents, Paul W. Lefebvre, John L. Seubert
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)
Applications of wetting-agent solutions produce mortality in birds. The exact cause of death is undetermined, but it is believed that destruction of the insulating qualities of the plumage permits ambient cold temperatures and evaporation to lower the body temperature to a lethal level. The original concept of using these materials as bird-control tools was developed in 1958 at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, Laurel, Maryland. Early field trials by personnel of the Division of Wildlife Services and the Denver Wildlife Research Center indicated that ground-application techniques had promise, but limitations of the equipment precluded …

Projected Hartree Product Wavefunctions. V. Density Matrices And Operators Containing Spin, Gordon A. Gallup
Gordon Gallup Publications
Formulas are given to allow the calculation of the various spin components of the first-order density and transition density matrices from one spatial component of a pure spin-state wavefunction and certain reduced operators. Similar expressions are given for the second-order density for singlet and doublet systems. These results are useful for the calculation of matrix elements of operators containing the spin. ©1970 American Institute of Physics

Projected Hartree Product Wavefunctions. Iv. Radial Correlation In Some Three- And Four-Electron Atoms, L.G. Heikes, Gordon A. Gallup
Gordon Gallup Publications
The energies of some three- and four-electron atoms including radial correlation have been determined by a spin-free version of the projected Hartree–Fock method. The wavefunction possesses the maximum flexibility allowable under the general restrictions of the method, and it is shown that this flexibility is necessary to adequately account for the differences between intra- and intershell correlation. Some comments on the AMO method are included. ©1970 American Institute of Physics

Concentration Of Co, In The Air Above A Sugar Beet Field, K.W. Brown, Norman J. Rosenberg
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The concentration of CO, in air sampled above a sugar beet crop was measured during July, August, and early September 1966 at Scottsbluff, Nebr. During July the mean daytime concentration decreased from 310 ppm to 283 ppm as the leaf area index increased from 0.8 to 4.0. Only small deviations from the mean daytime Concentration of 283 ppm occurred during the remainder of the season. The mean nocturnal concentration during this period was 320 ppm and was more variable than the daytime concentration. The daily amplitude of concentration averaged 70 ppm and was as great at times as 100 ppm. …
On The Relation Between Hard-Core And Velocity-Dependent Potentials: An Application To The Photonuclear Sum Rules, Paul Finkler, H. S. Valk
On The Relation Between Hard-Core And Velocity-Dependent Potentials: An Application To The Photonuclear Sum Rules, Paul Finkler, H. S. Valk
Paul Finkler Papers
A canonical transformation relating hard-core and velocity-dependent nucleonnucleon potentials is applied to the Srivastava potential and an equivalent hard-core potential is found. It is shown that the deuteron photonuclear electric-dipole integrated and bremsstrahlung-weighted cross sections resulting from the two equivalent potentials are essentially the same. The reasons for this agreement suggest that differences between the two sets of cross sections may remain small in other nuclei employing this type of potential.
Response Of Nuclear Emulsion To Electron Beams, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich
Response Of Nuclear Emulsion To Electron Beams, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich
Robert Katz Publications
A recent theory of particle tracks assumes that the probability P for grain development in nuclear emulsion depends on the local dose E of ionization energy deposited by secondary electrons (delta rays) in the neighborhood of the particle track. The response is assumed to be one of exponential survival; that is, if E0 is the dose for 37% survival, then P = 1 – exp (-E/E0). By calculation of the dose E(t) deposited at depth t in the emulsion by normally incident, monoenergetic electron beams, and applying the assumed dose-effect relationship, …

A call has been issued by Turner and Hollister in this journal for nomination of a suitable combination of charge and velocity to replace LET. It is the purpose of this communication to point out that no single combination of these variables can fully characterize track effects, as these are affected by the ratio of the range rm of the delta ray of maximum energy to the radius a0 of the sensitive volume.
Electrical Conductivity In Nh4Cl And Nd4Cl Single Crystals, Robert Fuller, F.W. Patten
Electrical Conductivity In Nh4Cl And Nd4Cl Single Crystals, Robert Fuller, F.W. Patten
Robert G. Fuller Publications
Electrical conductivity measurements are reported for normal and deuterated ammonium chloride single crystals in the temperature regions which characterize the pure and the impurity-dominated materials. We conclude from the data that conductivity in ammonium chloride is due to the formation of either cation or anion vacancies and a subsequent process controlled by a proton transfer. Our results are found to be consistent with a model proposed by Herrington and Staveley.

U.S. Research On Whales, Robert L. Brownell Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
The United States is a member of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and thus shares responsibility with 13 other countries for conducting research on whales. In 1958, our research program was moved from La Jolla, California, to the Marine Mammal Biological Laboratory in Seattle under the direction of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (BCF), Department of Interior. This move consolidated the scientific staff, libraries, and facilities used for marine mammal research. The legislation that created the Bureau made this organization the one responsible for decisions regarding the use of whale resources.

Formation Of Particle Tracks, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich
Formation Of Particle Tracks, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich
Robert Katz Publications
The formation of particle tracks, and such phenomena as the detection of charged particles and the damage produced by charged particles, are intimately related to the spatial distribution of ionization energy deposited by δ-rays. Changes in the spectrum of δ-rays with the velocity of the primary particle imply that linear measures of the interaction of the primary particle with the medium, such as specific energy loss, or primary ionization, are unsatisfactory measures of effects produced in the medium, for they contain no knowledge of the spatial deposition of the lost energy.

A New Tribe Of Saber-Toothed Cats (Barbourofelini) From The Pliocene Of North America, C. Bertrand Schultz, Marian R. Schultz, Larry D. Martin
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
A new genus of Pliocene Saber-toothed felid, Barbourofelis, is proposed and two new species B. fricki and B. morrisi are described. These two forms and other described material represent an unusual lineage of felids with long sabers, shortened crania, and massive postorbital bars. The tribal name Barbourofelini is proposed for this lineage which is presently known in North America from deposits ranging in age from Clarendonian through Kimballian. The Barbourofelini apparently migrated from Eurasia to North America in the Late Miocene or Early Pliocene. Sansanosmilus of the French Vindobonian appears to represent the ancestral stock of these cats. The …

Systematic Infections For The Assay Of Plant Viruses, Myron K. Brakke
Systematic Infections For The Assay Of Plant Viruses, Myron K. Brakke
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The first infectivity assays of plant viruses relied on the percentage of inoculated plants becoming systemically infected. The use of systemic infections for assays became unfashionable, however, after the discovery of local lesions and the demonstration that their numbers depended on virus concentration. Continued emphasis on local lesions over the years led to the widely held belief that systemic infections could not be used for a reliable and accurate assay of plant viruses. There was never any good statistical evidence for this viewpoint. In fact, no thorough investigation has been published of the accuracy of "systemic assays" of plant viruses, …
Property Tax Equalization And Assessment: A Proposal For Reform, Stanley M. Talcott
Property Tax Equalization And Assessment: A Proposal For Reform, Stanley M. Talcott
Nebraska Law Review
In 1967 the State of Nebraska officially withdrew from the property tax field. With the enactment of LB 377, Nebraska changed from a property tax to a combined sales and income tax as a source of revenue. Property taxes are now collected only by local subdivisions. However, the state still performs duties related to the property tax in two important areas: the state must value certain centrally assessed property such as railroads, public utilities, and airlines, and fix a uniform rate of valuation throughout the state. Centrally assessed properties are valued by the Nebraska Board of Equalization. Although this task …
How To Raise Pheasants
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
To raise pheasants, you will need about five square feet per bird in a covered pen. A 25-foot square will handle 125 chicks. However, the bigger the yard, the better, since these are wild birds and nervous. Overcrowding leads to feather-picking and cannibalism. It is important that the ground be clean to cut down disease and that there have been no chickens on it for at least two years.
Pheasant chicks need fresh air, sunshine, and lots of exercise to grow rapidly and develop into strong, vigorous birds that can survive .in the wild. Remember, you will be turning them …

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Ecological studies on the distribution of fairy shrimps have been made from 246 sites in the sandhills region of Nebraska. New records for Nebraska have been established for Artemia salina, Branchinecta campestris, B. lindahli, B. mackini and Cyzicus mexicanus. Seasonal populations of shrimp have been located in habitats containing permanent fish populations. Water mineralization was the dominant environmental condition related to the distribution of phyllopods with sodium and potassium compounds predominating in the strongly alkaline lakes. Several of the Artemia lakes were classified as hydroxide sites. Many of the alkaline ponds, where B. lindahli and B. campestris flourish, are …
