Rb56-182 Forty Years Of Dairy Cattle Breeding At The North Platte Experiment Station, Mogens Plum, Myron G.A. Rumery

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

In 1913 the Nebraska Legislature appropriated $17,500 to establish a Dairy Department at the North Platte Experiment Station. The department's herd was to be used in demonstrating management and breeding practices and as a source of breeding stock.

Since the North Platte herd was started, research in the field of animal breeding has developed new concepts in many phases of dairy cattle breeding and selection. In 1948 a regional project was started to study the improvement of dairy cattle through breeding and the herd of Holstein cattle at the North Platte Experiment Station became a part of this project.

Civil Defense And Law, Val Peterson Jan 1956

Civil Defense And Law, Val Peterson

Nebraska Law Review

“Government under our system is a resultant of the three forces of Federal, State, and local power. It is the sum total of these forces operating upon the individual that defines his rights and obligations with reference to his community, his state, and his nation. The ways in which these forces have been weighted as against each other have always presented fascinating and significant problems in government both in peace and war. Nowhere is that more true today than in the field of civilian defense, for civilian defense either in terms of protection or in its promotion of the essential …

Federal Tort Claims Act—A Liberalized Interpretation, Charles K. Thompson Jan 1956

Federal Tort Claims Act—A Liberalized Interpretation, Charles K. Thompson

Nebraska Law Review

In an action against the United States under the Federal Tort Claims Act, claimant sought recovery for cargo damage which resulted from the grounding of the tug and barge carrying the cargo. Claimant alleged that the grounding was caused by the failure of Coast Guard personnel to check and repair a navigational light, or to notify claimant that the light was not operating. A motion to dismiss on the theory that a private person would not be liable under “like circumstances,” as required by the act, was granted by the district court. The court of appeals affirmed. Certiorari was granted …

God And Caesar In Nebraska: A Study Of The Legal Relationship Of Church And State, 1854 -1954, Orville H. Zabel Dec 1955

God And Caesar In Nebraska: A Study Of The Legal Relationship Of Church And State, 1854 -1954, Orville H. Zabel

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

At a time when the control over the relationship of church and state seems to be shifting from the state governments to the Federal Government, it was decided to undertake a case study of the church-state problem in Nebraska. Such a study, stretching over a century, appeared to make possible a contribution to the understanding and solution of problems which have recently gained prominence and which will probably appear frequently in coming years. Any contribution, however slight, to an understanding of what constitutes the most desirable relationship of the church and the state may be of considerable value. Such a …

Occurrence And Distribution Of Hymenolepidid Cestodes In Shrews, Marietta Voge, Robert L. Rausch Dec 1955

Occurrence And Distribution Of Hymenolepidid Cestodes In Shrews, Marietta Voge, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A survey of the literature dealing with cestodes of shrews reveals the increasing interest of contemporary parasitologists in this poorly known group of symbionts. In the United States, approximately 18 species have been described from shrews in the last 15 years. These reports deal almost exclusively with morphology of the cestodes; however, information on distribution, host specificity, rate and intensity of infection, is either fragmentary or not available in published form.

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs Sep 1955

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Settlement In The Santa Cruz Area: A Proposed Program For The Development Of An Area With European Immigrants And Bolivian Indians, Ernesto Wende-Frankel

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Introduction

This study involves conceptual analysis in a broad interpretation of the term of a public administration problem situation embracing cultural, as well as politico-economic factors. A program ot action is recommended in considerable detail, calling tor the settlement of colonists to develop agriculturally a large amount of Bolivian land that promises to become, with proper husbandry, highly productive.

The author is a Bolivian agricultural economist who is making public administration his career, with particular emphasis upon the efficient utilization or land--and manpower, which for sometime past in his native country has been poorly organized and under employed. During the …

Unusual Pathogenicity Of Diphyllobothrium Sp. In A Black Bear, Robert L. Rausch Jul 1955

Unusual Pathogenicity Of Diphyllobothrium Sp. In A Black Bear, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The black bear, Ursus americanus Pallas, has been found to he an exceptionally good host for a common species of Diphyllobothrium, as evidenced by the large size attained by individual strobilae, and the duration of infections experimentally established. Since 1950, the writer has used at least five of these bears annually in the study of Diphyllobothrium spp. With the single exception reported herein, no adverse effect to the hosts has been recognized.

Classification Of Oligocene Sediments In Nebraska: A Guide For The Stratigraphic Collecting Of Fossil Mammals, C. Bertrand Schultz, Thompson M. Stout Jun 1955

Classification Of Oligocene Sediments In Nebraska: A Guide For The Stratigraphic Collecting Of Fossil Mammals, C. Bertrand Schultz, Thompson M. Stout

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The Chadron and Brule formations constitute the White River Group in Nebraska and adjacent states. The Brule is divided into the Orella and Whitney members. The latter members are referred to the Medial and Late Oligocene (equivalents of the European Stampian and Aquitanian), while-the Chadron is equated with the Early Oligocene (Sannoisian). Each unit in Nebraska is subdivided into three parts (Lower, Middle, and Upper; or A, B, and C for the Chadron and Whitney, and A-B, C, and D for the Orella). Key beds such as fossil soils (paleosols), Purplish White beds, and volcanic ash layers, when considered with …

Pustule Formation By Lactobacilli On Fermented Vegetables, T.L. Thompson, W.E. Engelhard, Hilliard Pivnik May 1955

Pustule Formation By Lactobacilli On Fermented Vegetables, T.L. Thompson, W.E. Engelhard, Hilliard Pivnik

Papers in Microbiology

Genuine dill pickles are the product resulting from the fermentation, predominantly lactic, of cucumbers immersed in a brine containing 3 to 4 per cent salt. The brine also contains dill weed and may contain spices and garlic or extracts of their essential oils. Genuine dill tomatoes are manufactured from green tomatoes by a fermentation similar to that used for pickles (Fabian and Wadsworth, 1944).
Lactobacillus plantarum is commonly associated with the fermentation of pickles (Pederson, 1936), although other lactobacilli and some yeasts undoubtedly play a role. A survery of the literature failed to uncover any reports concerning the microbial flora …

Paleosols Of The Oligocene Of Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Cyril Harvey Mar 1955

Paleosols Of The Oligocene Of Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Cyril Harvey

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Prominent paleosol ("buried" or "fossil" soil) complexes occur at the top of the middle Orella, upper Orella, lower Whitney, and upper Whitney in the Brule formation of Nebraska; and at the top of the "Lower Oreodon," "Middle Oreodon," "Upper Oreodon," and "Leptauchenia" beds in the Brule deposits of South Dakota. These paleosols have regional distribution and appear to be of value in stratigraphic correlations. Major faunal breaks seem to coincide with important buried soil zones, thus indicating that certain paleosols actually represent unconformities. Some of the soils were developed on old land surfaces where deposition was practically at a standstill …

Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn Mar 1955

Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

This paper presents a summary of experiences with a variety of cyanogenic wastes. The work has attempted to evaluate the interaction of waste bearing waters and the environment in terms of waste disposal design requirements. In this, the approach is somewhat more critical than that commonly taken by fisheries biologists, conservationists, and others who have been concerned with the "preventive" aspects of waste disposal.

The first phases of the work were designed to discover the tolerable limits of certain waste components to fresh water fish. This was undertaken in 1950; in the interval the composition of the wastes has been …

Law Making By Professional And Trade Associations, Frederick K. Beutel Jan 1955

Law Making By Professional And Trade Associations, Frederick K. Beutel

Nebraska Law Review

When the government of the United States was established, it adopted in its complete form the English legislative system which existed at the foundation of the colonies. This structure, including the committee systems, has come down almost unchanged to modern times. In addition there are in the United States fifty other independent law-making bodies having a large measure of sovereignty of their own which govern the forty-eight states and our two major territories now petitioning for statehood. To these there should be added over one hundred thousand local legislative bodies such as city councils, county commissioners, school boards, irrigation districts, …

Constitutional Law—Interstate Commerce—Antitrust Laws, Hal W. Bauer Jan 1955

Constitutional Law—Interstate Commerce—Antitrust Laws, Hal W. Bauer

Nebraska Law Review

Petitioner who was engaged in a wholly intrastate activity, the bakery business, at Santa Rosa, New Mexico, brought an action for treble damages. The corporate respondent was a Clovis, New Mexico, bakery which sold bread in interstate commerce. Respondent was one of several corporations having interlocking ownership and management, all marketing bread under a common name. The syndicate promoted the product through a common advertising program and purchased supplies as a unit. Respondent, claiming petitioner had instigated a boycott against it, cut the price of bread by one-half in Santa Rosa, thereby driving the petitioner out of business, but did …

Sovereign Liability For Tortious Acts Of Its Wards Occasioned By Failure To Exercise Proper Custodial Care, Charles K. Thompson Jan 1955

Sovereign Liability For Tortious Acts Of Its Wards Occasioned By Failure To Exercise Proper Custodial Care, Charles K. Thompson

Nebraska Law Review

Periodically the public reads of the injury of a citizen other than a state employee at the hands of a former mental patient who either escaped because of inadequate guarding or was released from a state or federal institution because of an improper release-diagnosis. The public assumes that the injured party will be reimbursed, but who will bear the burden of reimbursement? Confinement often leaves the patient judgment proof; the employee whose negligence allowed the escape is frequently judgment proof; the employee who negligently certified the release of an unrehabilitated patient is clothed with immunity from suit on his release-discretion; …

Criminal Law—The Need For A New Conception Of Insanity As A Defense To A Crime In Nebraska, Lyman C. Johnson Jan 1955

Criminal Law—The Need For A New Conception Of Insanity As A Defense To A Crime In Nebraska, Lyman C. Johnson

Nebraska Law Review

In 1843 a man named M’Naghten, convinced he was being persecuted, attempted to assassinate the Prime Minister of England and killed the Prime Minister’s secretary in the attempt. M’Naghten was acquitted by reason of insanity, but public uproar caused the House of Lords to make inquiry of the judges concerning the law of insanity. The most important answer to that inquiry was that a sane man understands the nature and quality of his acts or knows that they are wrong.

In 1955, over one hundred years later, a man named Thompson fired five shots at his wife in Omaha, Nebraska; …
