Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell Sep 1957

Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Waste effluents from many industries are toxic to fish and other aquatic life. The control or treatment of these wastes for safe release into receiving waters presents a problem of consider able magnitude.

Much effort has been expended by some industries to solve this problem, primarily through chemical analysis for possible toxic components and then generally by a search of the literature to find out how toxic a particular component may be. Unfortunately, this approach has not been successful, nor can it be expected to be productive of satisfactory answers.

Distribution And Specificity Of Helminths In Microtine Rodents: Evolutionary Implications, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The taxonomic status of anoplocephaline cestodes of microtine rodents has been reviewed. Of the genus Andrya Railliet, 1883, five species are considered valid: A. macrocephala Douthitt, 1915; A. primordialis Douthitt, 1915; A. montana Kirshenblat, 1941 ; A. arctica Rausch, 1952; A. bairdi Schad, 1954. Of the genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, 1910, six species are regarded as valid: P. omphalodes (Hermann, 1783); P. blanchardi (Moniez, 1891); P. infrequens (Douthitt, 1915); P. variabilis (Douthitt, 1915); P. lemmi Rausch, 1952; P. neofibrinus Rausch, 1952. Andrya caucasica Kirshenblat, 1938, and A. bialowizensis Soltys, 1949, are regarded as synonyms of A. macrocephala. Paranoplocephala brevis Kirshenblat, 1938, …

German Literature In Exile, W.M. K. Pfeiler Aug 1957

German Literature In Exile, W.M. K. Pfeiler

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The present monograph is the first of several of my studies dealing with the German literature that originated in exile since 1933. By calling it "German Literature in Exile" it is kept in mind that it is not a homogeneous literary entity but a part, although an important one, of the whole of German Literature, of which the Austrian and Swiss Literatures are essential components with individual characteristics. The designation used is basically a Formalkategorie for reasons of necessary reference. There are, however, traits of distinction: a militant humanism and a preoccupation with problems peculiar to the existence in exile. …

Robert Mcalmon: Expatriate Publisher And Writer, Robert E. Knoll Aug 1957

Robert Mcalmon: Expatriate Publisher And Writer, Robert E. Knoll

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Though Robert MeAlmon has never received critical or popular acclaim, he deserves attention. An important expatriate in Paris in the Twenties, he was a writer, a publisher and a friend of the great and near-great who lived and worked there. He drank, talked, quarrelled with all of them; and we can understand them better for knowledge of him. McAlmon wrote a great deal, two short novels, four volumes of stories, four volumes of poems and a long autobiography. If these books do not earn him a place among the foremost novelists and poets of his time, they ought not be …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Since 1937, when alveolar hydatid disease was first recognized on the Japanese island of Rebun, 25 cases have been investigated clinically. About one percent of the population of the island is believed to be infected. (Yamashita et al., 1955). Five cases also have been reported from other islands, some of these involving emigrants from Rebun (Inukai et al., 1955; Yamashita, 1956).

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxi. Observations On The Propagation Of The Larval Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In Vitro, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia Jentoft

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Larval reproduction in Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, takes place through the proliferation of exogenous secondary vesicles (Rausch, 1954). In some species of host this process appears to be continual, extending over a long period of time with little tendency for self-limitation. Consequently, the growth characteristics of this larval cestode are such that it would seem well suited to culture in vitro.

Specificity Of Intermolecular Forces Due To Quantummechanical And Thermal Charge Fluctuations*, Herbert Jehle Jan 1957

Specificity Of Intermolecular Forces Due To Quantummechanical And Thermal Charge Fluctuations*, Herbert Jehle

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The preceding note1 (Paper I) developed the theory of the specificity of some intermolecular forces: the forces due to fluctuations of electric charge distribution in and over the interacting molecules. It was found that for a mixture of molecules in a liquid medium these forces cause a rearrangement of the molecules, so that molecules which have the same distribution of oscillator polarizabilities and oscillator orientations over the frequency spectrum tend to associate. This means that like molecules tend to become nearest neighbors. For that reason it was said that there is specific attraction between identical molecules.

The Life-Cycle Of Diplostomum Baeri Eucaliae N. Subsp. (Trematoda: Strigeida)*, Glenn L. Hoffman, James B. Hundley

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

During the summers of 1953, 1954, and 1955, many brook stickleback, Eucalia inconstans, from the English Coulee, a small stream in Grand Forks, were found infected with an unrecorded species of diplostomulum metacercaria; its life cycle has been reported in abstract (Hoffman, 1955). In 1953, 51 (82%) of the 62 sticklebacks examined were infected, but in 1955 a much smaller number was infected; no exact records were kept in 1954 and 1955. The number of diplostomula per fish ranged from 0 to 335. During the summer of 1956 lightly infected stickleback were also found in Turtle River, Kelly's Slough, …

On 18 May 1954, (a specimen of) Burhinus oedicnemus (L.) was killed in the Lenkoransky region of Azerbaijan S.S.R.; on its head a male Amblyomma lepidum Dönitz, 1909, was found. Morphological characters of this tick, size and shape of body, characteristic light and dark ornamentation of dorsal shield, punctation, shape, and two colors of festoons, size and shape of cervical and lateral grooves, hypostome, peritreme, projection on coxae, and spherical orbited eyes correspond to those in the description of A. lepidum, given in Robinson monograph. Only on four anterior festoons a small light spot is found (in …

Biological Indices Of Water Pollution, With Special Reference To Fish Populations, Peter Doudoroff, Charles E. Warren Jan 1957

Biological Indices Of Water Pollution, With Special Reference To Fish Populations, Peter Doudoroff, Charles E. Warren

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

A number of investigators have very recently published discussions having to do with biological indices and biological measures of water pollution (1) (2) (7) (13) (14) (15) (16) (26) (27) (28) (29) (30) (36) (38). Fjerdingstad (12) has discussed some of the pertinent European literature. The fundamental concepts presented by these authors are not original, for the idea that aquatic organisms can be useful "indicators" of environmental conditions, and particularly of the degree of pollution of water with organic wastes, has a long history (12). Because of certain novel features and the relatively wide scope of the studies, and the …

Damages—Loss Of Earnings—Measure Of Recovery And Admissibility Of Evidence Of Prior Earnings And Employment, Philip C. Sorenson Jan 1957

Damages—Loss Of Earnings—Measure Of Recovery And Admissibility Of Evidence Of Prior Earnings And Employment, Philip C. Sorenson

Nebraska Law Review

Plaintiff worked continuously as a welder from 1925 through 1950 when he quit welding and went into a business from which he was never able to realize a substantial income. In 1953, plaintiff, age 49 and in good health, was permanently and totally disabled in an auto accident. In his action for damages, evidence was admitted to show the prevailing wages paid to welders in plaintiff’s community as well as plaintiff’s own earnings as a welder prior to 1951. A substantial part of these earnings was derived from employment outside of the community. On appeal, Held: admissibility of such …

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner Jan 1957

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The accurate geologic dating of Pleistocene vertebrate localities which occur outside the glaciated regions has always been difficult. Several new fossil localities in Nebraska now provide data for a better understanding of the paleoecology and faunal evidence of the medial Pleistocene of the Great Plains region.

A fossil quarry, containing the remains of both vertebrates and invertebrates, has been discovered in south-central Nebraska (11/2 miles south and west of Angus in Nuckolls County). The fossils are preserved in Sappa silts in a lime concentration zone (C horizon) of a Yarmouth paleosol. The calcium carbonate appears to have been responsible for …

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard Jan 1957

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

IN COMMON with the experience of most states, Nebraska's deer herds were reduced to a very low level by excessive harvests in our early history. Most American big-game animals were overharvested in the early history of this nation because of commercialization. Buffalo were killed for their hides, deer for their meat. This slaughter continued as long as the hunter (or poacher) could sell his take at a profit. Modem game management and public opinion reversed this trend. Deer are on the way back all over America, and in some states the protection-complex was so strong that deer were restored to …

Geology And Ground- Water Resources Of The Lower Lodgepole Creek Drainage Basin, Nebraska, L. J. Bjorklund, E. R. Jochens

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The area described is almost wholly in Nebraska and is the drainage basin of Lodgepole Creek from the Wyoming State line to the Colorado State line, a distance along the stream valley of about 95 miles. It covers about 1,950 square miles. The purposes of the study were to ascertain the characteristics, thickness, and extent of the water-bearing formations and to obtain and interpret data on the origin, quality, quantity, movement, availability, and use of ground water in the area.

The rocks exposed in the drainage basin are the Brule formation of Oligocene (Tertiary) age, the Ogallala formation of Pliocene …

Evidence—The Uniform Business Records As Evidence Act Applied To Medical Records, Howard E. Tracy Jan 1957

Evidence—The Uniform Business Records As Evidence Act Applied To Medical Records, Howard E. Tracy

Nebraska Law Review

In Fries v. Goldsby, decided in December 1956, the Nebraska Supreme Court held, inter alia, that a chiropractor’s permanent record of plaintiff’s history, examination, diagnosis, care, and treatment were not admissible into evidence under the Uniform Business Records as Evidence Act. Because the court treated the chiropractor as an expert in his field, this holding probably applies to other medical witnesses who testify as experts in their fields of knowledge. Thus, the court has seemingly held that the permanent records of physicians, surgeons, and dentists do not fall within the purview of the Uniform Act. This note is …
