1965 Beef Cattle Progress Report Of Research Activities, E. F. Frolik, H. H. Kramer
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Beef carcass evaluation work is designed to obtain production and carcass data on bulls, steers and heifers. One objective is to evaluate sex effects on growth and carcass traits. Another is to determine if sires rank the same in growth and carcass traits on their bull, steer and heifer progeny.
Preliminary results from the 1963 slaughter groups were reported in the 1964 Beef Cattle Progress Report. This report covers averages of 1963 and 1964 results. Results both years were similar.

Luteotropic Properties Of Luteinizing Hormone And Nature Of Oxytocin Induced Luteal Inhibition In Cattle, Lloyd Donaldson, William Hansel, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Fifty-three Holstein heifers were used to study the effects of oxytocin administered alone and in combination with various gonadotropins on the weights and progesterone contents of corpora lutea. Pituitary gonadotropin levels were compared in untreated and oxytocin-treated heifers at three stages of the estrous cycle.
Oxytoein injections on Days 2 through 6 significantly reduced the weights and total progesterone contents but not the progesterone concentrations of glands removed on Day 7. The concurrent administration of either purified bovine luteinizing hormone (LH) or human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) significantly increased these parameters from the oxytocin treatment levels to normal or supra-normal values. …

The present study was undertaken to test and evaluate the various taxonomic arrangements of the family, to discover some of the trends of behavioral evolution, and to provide a basis for future workers to use in naming, describing, and evaluating the behavioral patterns observed in waterfowl.
The major sexual behavior patterns of the species of Anatidae are reviewed and summarized, for the purpose of clarifying evolutionary relationships in the family, tracing the evolution of behavior patterns through various taxa, and evaluating the importance of certain behavior patterns as potential isolating mechanisms.
Species treated include:
Magpie Goose, Fulvous and Cuban Whistling …

Litter Size And Proportion Of Females In The Offspring Of Multiparous Rats With Varying Uterine Metabolic Levels, A. B. Schutz
Litter Size And Proportion Of Females In The Offspring Of Multiparous Rats With Varying Uterine Metabolic Levels, A. B. Schutz
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The rate of TTC reduction by the uterine tissue of rats was determined at specific stages of the oestrous cycle, and in successive cycles at the same stage. Individual females showed a characteristic level of reaction to TTC. Mothers whose uteri had a high reaction rate with TTC produced litters with a higher percentage of female pups than did mothers with a low level of reaction. Previous studies have shown that TTC reduction rate represents a metabolic activity of uterine tissue that is induced by oestrogens.
Rural Zoning In Nebraska, Donald R. Witt
Rural Zoning In Nebraska, Donald R. Witt
Nebraska Law Review
The purpose of this comment is to examine the rural problems in Nebraska and the possible solutions available through zoning. Zoning has evolved from the police power reserved to the individual states by the United States Constitution, subject to certain constitutional limitations and safeguards. Thus, to determine the absolute limits of valid zoning legislation, an examination must be made of the United States Supreme Court's interpretation of the police power. Since zoning is a power exercised by the individual states, however, the absolute limits allowed by the federal constitution may be further narrowed and constricted by state law, as interpreted …

Mechanisms Controlling The Formation And Persistence Of The Corpus Luteum, L. L. Anderson, R. M. Melampy
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Mechanisms which control formation of corpora lutea during the estrous cycle, and particularly factors affecting their persistence and regression in various reproductive stages, have been of considerable interest to physiologists concerned with developing methods for control of the estrous cycle in domestic animals. Some recent reviews on control of ovarian function are those by Chester Jones and Ball (30), Anderson et al. (9) and Short (121).

The Role Of Light In The Regulation Of Cyclical Estrous Activity In Sheep, M. T. Clegg, H. H. Cole, W. F. Ganong
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The widespread existence of biological clocks among animals is documented by a considerable body of evidence. Recently Farner (13) has reviewed this subject covering information on a large variety of animals. In this paper an attempt will be made to restrict most of the discussion to sheep. Experimental data from other species, however, will be cited when it can be usefully related to an understanding of the mechanisms controlling seasonal breeding activity in this species. As far as present knowledge is concerned, the factors regulating or at least monitoring annual physiologic cycles appear to depend greatly upon the influence of …

Some Side-Effects And After-Effects Of Experimental Endocrine Treatments Used To Modify The Natural Estrual Rhythm, L. E. Casida
Some Side-Effects And After-Effects Of Experimental Endocrine Treatments Used To Modify The Natural Estrual Rhythm, L. E. Casida
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The side-effects and after-effects to be considered in this discussion are those which grow out of experimental attempts to modify the natural estrual rhythm, and which have a bearing on the subsequent fertility ofthe animal. They are the effects that at one-and-the-same- time are the despair and the hope of workers on technological control of reproduction. They are the despair in that they detract from our immediate ability to control reproduction; they are the hope in that we may be able to learn more about the reproductive process in our attempts to analyze and understand them.

A Legal-Economic Critique Of Nebraska Watercourse Law, Clayton K. Yeutter
A Legal-Economic Critique Of Nebraska Watercourse Law, Clayton K. Yeutter
Nebraska Law Review
Nothing is more emotion packed than a discussion of ways and means to allocate a resource that is essential to the maintenance of human life. Yet the scarcity of water in many parts of our nation makes such a discussion imperative. Although Nebraska's landscape is dotted with innumerable creeks and streams, the state's tremendous irrigation developments have long since created water disputes and a legal system for adjudicating them. This article will attempt to show that from a legal-economic viewpoint at least some changes are long overdue.

The Duty To Act: A Proposed Rule, Wallace M. Rudolph
The Duty To Act: A Proposed Rule, Wallace M. Rudolph
Nebraska Law Review
Adoption of a proposed duty to act rule will do little to change the behavior of the individual, except insofar as it might create an environment in which he could be a better citizen. But the rule will protect and compensate the few good Samaritans who are sometimes penalized for their virtues. Moreover, the rule will not turn anyone into a busybody, for the consideration of reasonableness of action will not allow more protection to the really officious intermeddler than he now has under the law. Nor will such a rule cause persons to fear for their property because of …

"The Battle Of The Experts": A New Approach To An Old Problem In Medical Testimony, Larry W. Myers
Nebraska Law Review
The testimony of medical experts is essential in establishing the extent of a plaintiff's injuries in personal injury litigation. When conflicting or contradictory medical testimony is presented, a phenomenon arises which often attains such noticeable proportions that it has been dramatically labeled "the battle of the experts." In several jurisdictions, judicial, legal, and medical groups have collaborated to create programs aimed at resolving or minimizing these courtroom conflicts. This study seeks to ascertain whether such a program would promote the administration of justice in Nebraska.

Life Cycle And Development Of Prosthorhynchus Formosus (Van Cleave, 1918) Travassos, 1926, An Acanthocephalan Parasite Of Birds, Gerald D. Schmidt, O. Wilford Olsen
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The life cycle of Prosthorhynchus formosus (Van Cleave, 1918) Travassos, 1926 is presented. The terrestrial isopods Armadillidium vulgare, Porcellio laevis, and P. scaber served as experimental intermediate hosts, and chickens and turkeys as experimental definitive hosts. After ingestion of the eggs by the isopod, the acanthor emerges from its shells within 15 minutes to 2 hours, enters the gut wall of its host, and remains there 15 to 25 days. It then migrates to the hemocoel and develops through the acanthella stage to the infective cystacanth by the 60th to 65th day of infection.
The Relationship Of Certain Measures Of Creativity To Achievement In Selected Science And Related Coursework, Sheryl Oberg Snyder
The Relationship Of Certain Measures Of Creativity To Achievement In Selected Science And Related Coursework, Sheryl Oberg Snyder
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
The main question of this study concerns the relationship of creativity and achievement in science and related areas. More specifically, does the ingenious person, as determined by certain measures, excel in high school and college science, mathematics and science-related courses?Does the person with two- and three-dimensional visualization abilities, as determined by certain measures, likewise excel in these areas? Also, do the person with reasoning abilities similarly determined excel in these areas?
These questions raise a larger, overarching question predictability:Would knowledge of ingenuity, visualization ability, and reasoning ability aid in predicting achievement in science and related fields in high school and college? …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xli. Observations On Cestodes Of The Genus Diplogonoporus Lönnberg, 1892 (Diphyllobothriidae), Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The study of a collection of cestodes assigned to the genus Diplogonoporus Lönnberg, 1892 disclosed but two species, D. balaenopterae Lönnberg, 1892, and D. tetrapterus (von Siebold, 1848) (provis.). These cestodes occur characteristically in marine mammals but occasionally are found in terrestrial hosts; D. balaenopterae is recorded for the first time from the domestic dog, and it is concluded that D. grandis (Blanchard, 1894), from man, is conspecific with D. balaenopterae. The latter species is recorded for the first time from the humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae (Borowski). The relatively small D. tetrapterus, a common parasite of the Steller …
