Night Flight Across A Blue Sky: Prognostics, Robert H. Giles Jr.
Night Flight Across A Blue Sky: Prognostics, Robert H. Giles Jr.
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The purpose of this presentation is to gain new perspectives on pest control and related phenomena. Some will call it “blue sky.” I would claim it informal futuristics. Systems men call such efforts feedforward; others grandify it with “prognostics.” Some say prognostics is one of the leading challenges of the day. We must anticipate future developments and imagine or invent new alternatives as a background for rational choice. The activity can influence today’s decisions, modify our concepts of risks and probable payoffs, and can help those of us who ask: “What am I really doing; what should I be doing?”

Bird Control In Milwaukee : A Case History, Laverne A. Penn
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
In planning a city-wide pigeon control program, many problems must be considered to conduct such a program safely and efficiently. The City of Milwaukee Health Department has been engaged in some degree of nuisance bird control activity for more than thirty years. Early attempts at bird control consisted of using fireworks, rubber snakes, paper mache owls, and other devices to prevent starling roosting. All met with very limited success and were eventually abandoned. Until the post World War II period, Milwaukee, like most large cities, was plagued by an abundance of homeless pigeons. Pigeons were abundant on downtown streets, commercial …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
I imagine we in Arkansas have more bird roosts than any other state in the nation. I think we could find 50 bird roosts this winter that have a million or more birds in each of them. Our problem is that we have these birds sitting in the wrong place; and we, along with the Wildlife Services people, have worked pretty hard on developing a technique for moving birds from where there are a lot of people to where there are very few people.

Originally we had the old Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) which involved Health, Education and Welfare, Interior, Food and Drug Administration but was administered by USDA. This has been changed by the passage of the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act (FEPCA). Now in certain cases you will find that EPA is working through the States under the FEPCA law to develop policy. You will find EPA and the amended FIFRA will play a very important role in your business for several years.

A Bibliography On The Red-Winged Blackbird, Noel J. Cutright
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Following the completion of my doctoral dissertation on the Red-winged Blackbird, I decided to compile a bibliography on the species. This bibliography updates and expands the selected bibliography on Redwings prepared by Mealey and Mitchell in 1966. No effort was made to list the many progress and final reports on various aspects of blackbird research issued by the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife. Literature citations follow the Style used in The Journal of Wildlife Management.

Bird Management On The Farm And At The Processing Plant, Thomas K. Palmer
Bird Management On The Farm And At The Processing Plant, Thomas K. Palmer
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Bird management, whether conducted on farms or at food processing plants, utilizes a rather limited number of techniques in conjunction with an intimate knowledge of pest avian behavior. The deployment of bird management techniques is dependent upon the complexity of pest induced environment and limitations imposed by human, moral, political, social and economic pressures.

Where Are We In Bird Control The Urban Scene, C. W. Marshall
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Four (4) major bird control methods are presently registered: (1) Bird repellents (2) Stomach distress repellents (3) Contact poisons (4) Stomach poisons Seven hundred and sixty seven (767) companies out of 1800 NPCA members indicate they are engaged in bird control. This number will undoubtedly grow for birds do constitute a health, economic and nuisance problem. The amended FIFRA Act will undoubtedly have an effect on bird control methods. More restrictions will probably be placed on such poisonous materials as endrin and strychnine. If endrin is allowable, “perch” use will be the only methods, strychnine will probably be greatly restricted. …

A Field Test Of Methiocarb Efficacy In Reducing Bird Damage To Michigan Blueberries, Richard A. Dolbeer, Charles R. Ingram, Allen R. Stickley Jr.
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Over 20,000 acres of highbush (cultivated) blueberries are grown in the United States (Johnston et al. 1969). The major producing states are Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Washington, Indiana, and Oregon. Bird damage to blueberries is widespread and sometimes severe (Vaile and Moore, 1968; Pearson, 1958; Hayne and Cardinell, 1949; and Schwartze and Alcorn, 1960). Unfortunately, accurate estimates of less from birds are lacking. Non-lethal methods of controlling bird damage are essential since much of the damage is caused by popular song birds protected by Federal law. Scare devices, including exploders and electronic broadcast alarms, are often used with variable …

Crowding Among Hunter-Gatherers: The !Kung Bushmen, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Highly crowded living conditions exist among the !Kung Bushmen, hunter-gatherers who live on the edges of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South-West Africa. The !Kung appear to be crowded by choice, and biological indicators of stress are absent. Data indicate that residential crowding alone does not produce symptoms of pathological stress.

Rna Polymerase Activity Associated With Bacteriophage Φ6, James L. Van Etten, A. K. Vidaver, R. K. Koski, J. S. Semancik
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The Pseudomonas phaseolicola bacteriophage φ6 incorporated labeled UTP into an acid-insoluble precipitate. Incorporation was dependent on the presence of manganese acetate, ATP, GTP, CTP, and a short heat treatment of the phage; the reaction was stimulated by NH,Cl. The substitution of 14C-ATP, -CTP or -GTP for UTP, together with the appropriate unlabeled ribonucleoside triphosphates, disclosed that CMP was incorporated to the greatest extent followed by GMP, UMP, and AMP. Radioactive RNAs formed by the reaction were resistant to RNases A and T1 in high salt but susceptible to these nucleases in low salt. The labeled RNA co-sedimented and …

Characteristics Of Deoxyribonucleic Acid Polymerase Isolated From Spores Of Rhizopus Stolonifer , Cheng-Shung Gong, Larry Dunkle, James L. Van Etten
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-dependent DNA polymerase was purified several hundredfold from germinated and ungerminated spores of the fungus Rhizopus stolonifer. The partially purified enzymes from both spore stages exhibited identical characteristics; incorporation of [3H] deoxythymidine monophosphate into DNA required Mg2+, DNA, a reducing agent, and the simultaneous presence of deoxyguanosine triphosphate, deoxycytidine triphosphate, and deoxyadenosine triphosphate. Heat-denatured and activated DNAs were better templates than were native DNAs. The buoyant density of the radioactive product of the reaction was similar to that of the template DNA. The enzyme is probably composed of a single polypeptide chain with …

Nine measures related to breeding efficiency were used for comparisons among purebred Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Holsteins, and Jerseys and between purebreds and 32 crossbred groups representing 2-breed, 3-breed, 5/8, and backcrosses by purebred sires and progeny of crossbred sires. There were four herds with Holsteins common to all, Brown Swiss and Jerseys in three herds and Ayrshires in one herd. Four 2-breed, two 3-breed, and two backcross groups were common to two or more herds. Among purebreds, breed effects were significant in 16 of 72 tests, but there was no consistent trend favoring one breed. Generally, Jerseys were better than …

Chemical Quality Of The Groundwater System In Hall County, Nebraska, Jon C. Atkinson
Chemical Quality Of The Groundwater System In Hall County, Nebraska, Jon C. Atkinson
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Hall County, an area of 540 square miles, is in south-central Nebraska. The Platte River flows east-northeasterly across the county from its southwest corner; the Wood River, which is tributary to the Platte within Hall County, enters the county about 6 miles north of the southwest corner. Analysis of streamflow data indicates that the Platte and Wood Rivers are losing streams in Hall County. Based on an 18-year period, October 1953 through September 1971, the average annual losses between gaging stations were 48,100 and 1,940 acre-feet, respectively.
The county is underlain by unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age. These deposits mantle …

Reproduction In The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus) In Colorado, Richard A. Dolbeer
Reproduction In The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus) In Colorado, Richard A. Dolbeer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Information on reproduction of the red squirrel (Tamiasciumrs hudsonicus) can be gleaned from studies in the northeastern United States (Klugh, 1927; Hamilton, 1939; Layne, 1954) and in western Canada (Miller, 1970; Smith, 1968; Kemp and Keith, 1971; Wood, 1967). However, there is a paucity of information on reproduction from the mountainous regions of the western United States. This paper presents reproductive information on the red squirrel from Colorado and helps fill this void. In addition, the reproductive strategy of red squirrels is briefly compared with that of snowshoe hares.

Motion And Time Studies Of Milking Parlors And Routines, R. D. Appleman, C. F. Micke
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This study defines and describes the parameters of milking in both the elevated side-opening and herringbone style milking parlor. Included in this "motion and time" study are measurements of differences in milking routines or techniques, as well as the probable contribution of certain mechanical aids, including both crowd gates and group-washing systems. Milker (men) differences are also identified. Detailed measurements of time requirements for specific milking activities or chores are expensive to obtain. Very limited data are found in the scientific literature. This bulletin is published to supply resource data which may be used in planning milking parlors or as …

Comparison Of The Direct Agglutination And Indirect Hemagglutination Tests In The Determination Of Blood Serum Titers To Escherichia Coli Organisms, I. A. Schipper, Clayton L. Kelling, H. Ebeltoft, D. Graves
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
A comparison of the direct agglutination test and the indirect hemagglutination test for the detection of blood serum antibodies to Escherichia coli organisms indicated that these serological tests were comparable. In some instances the indirect hemagglutination test provided higher endpoint readings. Preparation of the antigens for the indirect hemagglutination test was more time consuming than for the direct agglutination test. Crude extract and purified polysaccharides were comparable as red blood cell sensitizing agents.
Black Family Structures And Functions: An Empirical Examination Of Some Suggestions Made By Billingsley, J. Allen Williams Jr., Robert Stockton
Black Family Structures And Functions: An Empirical Examination Of Some Suggestions Made By Billingsley, J. Allen Williams Jr., Robert Stockton
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Andrew Billingsley in Black Families in White America has criticized much of the previous research on the black family, saying that social scientists have ignored the structural variation among families and have focused on a very limited number of family functions. To correct what he believes to be a distorted picture of the black family, he has suggested a typology of family structures and a large number of family functions which should be taken into consideration. This paper, based upon data collected from 321 black households, uses Billingsley’s typology to examine the association between family structures and functions. It is …

Control Of Pantothenate Accumulation In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Tsuneo Kaneshiro, Larry O. Arthur, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Papers in Microbiology
Two pantothenate-requiring mutants of Agrobacterium tumefaciens have been isolated. One of them (strain WMP-1) is unusual in that growth levels equivalent to the parent strain are achieved only when the medium is additionally supplemented with aspartate or another compound related to the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Extracts of cells grown on limiting aspartate were found to contain four times more 14IC-pantothenate than th6se grown at optimal aspartate concentrations. This difference was found in both the perchloric acid-soluble and -insoluble fractions, presumably the coenzyme A pool and acyl carrier protein, respectively. These findings are discussed in terms of membrane integrity and …
